mine tore with my first daughter and it took them 45 min to sew up, seriously! but i did heal A LOT better than the mom in my room who had been cut.... it might also be genetics on how well you heal, and on how much pain you can take?

my doctor had to cut mine because my baby's head was too big to pass through. he doesn't want to give me a c-section either, because he say I will recover faster and better with natural birth. I was in labor for 36 hours though. The nurse didn't follow the doctor order and give me the epidorual as he plan instead she give me this shot. Which make me throw up a lot. By the time I was ready to deliver my baby girl I was too tired already. sad....

sunny3 last time i gave birth, doctors cut me and stitched, but anyway it did hurt so much after that. I couldn't sit and even moving was painful. I was sore for a very long time. Imagine going to the restroom! This why i was so surprised to hear that some ladies here had sex soon after delivery with episiotomy or after tear. To me sex was out of the question for quite a long time. But it will pass and become a memory, so hang in there.

It all depends on your body, I didn't tear or get snipped, nore did I do any sort of streching anything down there when I had my baby. The girls are right! The docs will keep a eye on ya!
MyLilAidan -

Doctors will cut if they think you might tear. They dont do it to be lazy here. I would rather be snipped then tear, its harder to stich up! and takes longer to recover from.

the dr. definitely snipped my goodies... i think because he was lazy. if you haven't given birth yet tell the dr. to massage you down there.... it's a muscle. it stretches. i heard it burns but a friend of mine never tore or had to get snipped for her 4 girls.

I'm still really early on to be worrying about this, but is it common nowadays for them to perform episiotomies at birth or to let you tear? Everything I read says opposite the last. Jaclyn82 -

number5forme..that is HILARIOUS thank you for sharing it! MommyXs3 -

clairelouise- My first labor was 11 hours. All natural (except they broke my water to induce me). My second delivery was 3 1/2 hours from start to finish. Only a little over 2 hours of that we're painful because of Pitosin. It was much faster than my daughter. 43 hour labors are not normal and I'm sure things will be better this time! :) MommyXs3 -

Phonics- You can do squats. It's great for the birthing muscles. Not your typical squats...you just lean against a wall with your back flat, your feet shoulder width apart and slide down. Hold it, and then come back up. Don't over do it but if you gradually build, this will help in pushing. :) Kegels are great and so is walking. :) MommyXs3 -

I am 30 weeks pregnant nad was wondering what can I do now to help me for when I am going into labor? I was told to walk like half a mile to a mile a day by one person and by another to do kegel exercises. Any other suggestions? number5forme -

The 'Middle Wife' by an Anonymous 2nd grade teacher
I've been teaching now for about fifteen years. I have two kids
myself, but the best birth story I know is the one I saw in my own
second grade classroom a few years back.
When I was a kid, I loved show-and-tell. So I always have a few
sessions with my students. It helps them get over shyness and usually,
show-and-tell is pretty tame. Kids bring in pet turtles, model
airplanes, pictures of fish they catch, stuff like that. And I never,
ever place any boundaries or limitations on them. If they want to lug
it in to school and talk about it, they're welcome.
Well, one day this little girl, Erica, a very bright, very outgoing
kid, takes her turn and waddles up to the front of the class with a
pillow stuffed under her sweater.
She holds up a snapshot of an infant. 'This is Luke, my baby brother,
and I'm going to tell you about his birthday.'
'First, Mom and Dad made him as a symbol of their love, and then Dad
put a seed in my Mom's stomach, and Luke grew in there. He ate for
nine months through an umbrella cord.'
She's standing there with her hands on the pillow, and I'm trying not
to laugh and wishing I had my camcorder with me. The kids are watching
her in amazement.
'Then, about two Saturdays ago, my Mom starts saying and going, 'Oh,
Oh, Oh, Oh!' Erica puts a hand behind her back and groans. 'She walked
around the house for, like an hour, 'Oh, oh, oh!' (Now this kid is
doing a hysterical duck walk and groaning.) 'My Dad called the middle
wife. She delivers babies, but she doesn't have a sign on the car like
the Domino's man. They got my Mom to lie down in bed like this. '
(Then Erica lies down with her back against the wall.)
'And then, pop! My Mom had this bag of water she kept in there in case
he got thirsty, and it just blew up and spilled all over the bed, like
psshhheew!' (This kid has her legs spread with her little hands miming
water flowing away. It was too much!)
'Then the middle wife starts saying 'push, push,' and 'breathe,
breathe. They started counting, but never even got past ten. Then, all
of a sudden, out comes my brother. He was covered in yucky stuff that they all said it was from Mom's play-center, so there must be a lot of
toys inside there.'
Then Erica stood up, took a big theatrical bow and returned to her
seat. I'm sure I applauded the loudest. Ever since then, when it's
show-and-tell day, I bring my camcorder, just in case another 'Middle
Wife' comes along.

I want to share something with the moms-to-be out there that might be induced. Please ask what they are administering...DO NOT allow any doc or nurse to apply Misoprostol, the generic name for Cytotec to soften your cervix and start labor. It is not approved for this and can cause uterine rupture, fetal and maternal death. Here is the RX info: http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/misopro.htm and here is an article which talks about several lawsuits: http://www.motherjones.com/news/outfront/2001/01/labor.html finally, ABC news did a story on this: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/11/30/eveningnews/main658388.shtml 2xmom -

clairelouise- My experience was much better the second time around! My first was 25 hours, 3hours pushing (almost C-sec.) it was a nightmare. Your 43hr. sounds awful! No doubt you want to hear something positive. My second labor was 10 hours total. I was at home for the first 5 hours, then 5 hours at the hospital. The last hour was pushing the baby out. The second labor was much better!! Good luck! my-lil-miracle -

I went in on Tuesday April 29th at 8pm and was given a pill to soften my cervix at around 8:40pm... I went in at 1 1/2 cm dialated and 50% effaced and stayed that way until 2pm on Wedenesday April 30th... I was 4cm and 80% effaced so they broke my water and continued my induction on Pitocin. At 3:30pm I couldn`t take the pain any more so I got checked again and was still at 4cm but had 45 second long contractions every minute... I asked for the epidural at that point and was so much better when I received it... I was checked at 6pm and was 8cm and 100% effaced, then at 8pm I was feeling the need to push, so I was checked again and was 10cm and started pushing around 8:20pm... an hour and a half later my baby boy was out on my chest and crying... I loved that moment. He only cried for a few minutes (Sam cut his umbilical cord) and watched them clean him up).... They sewed me up (I tore 2nd degree only internally) and a few hours later I was off to recovery... It turns out that I had a Uterine infection due to the fact of how long my labor was so I needed to stay in the hospital an extra day to finish receiving IV antibiotics... but now I`m home with little MIchael and we`re doing well!! HE was WORTH EVERY MINUTE OF THOSE 25 HOURS!!!!
