Abortion

An abortion can be a very hard decision to make. Don't make this decision on your own!

Number of abortions in the US

On the basis of current abortion rates, one in three American women will have had an abortion by the age of 45.

5 ways of Abortion

  1. First 3 months: VACUUM ASPIRATION (also called `dilation and curettage` or `D and C` or `suction curettage`) is a surgical abortion. It can be done as soon as the woman finds out that she is pregnant up to fourteen weeks after the first day of the last normal period. That`s about four to twelve weeks after fertilization, but since we usually don`t know when fertilization happens, all the numbers in this Reference Sheet are `since the Last Menstrual Period` or what doctors call `LMP`).

Vacuum aspiration is the most common type of abortion. In Washington, almost 79 % of all abortions are this type. Besides being done for abortion purposes, this is also the most common procedure after a miscarriage. It costs about $406 – $787 in the Seattle area. Low-income women can get financial help and medical coupons are usually accepted. Sometimes private insurance companies will also cover it.
  2. First 3 months: MEDICATION ABORTION (also known as `the abortion pill` or `RU 486`) is used up to nine weeks after the first day of the last menstrual period.

The medication abortion is the second most common type of abortion. In Washington, almost 12% of all abortions are this type. They cost about $415 - $675 in the Seattle area. Low-income women can get financial help and medical coupons are usually accepted. Sometimes private insurance companies will also cover it. Some clinics have age limits that do not allow for girls under the age of 15 to select this procedure.
  3. 3 - 6 months: DILATION AND EVACUATION or a `D & E` ... is done between 12 and 20 weeks, occasionally more, after the first day of the last normal period.

D & E is the third most common type of abortion. About 9% of all abortions in Washington are D & E's. In the Seattle area they cost about $500- $2,000 and are not available after 24 weeks gestation. Again, financial help is available and some doctors accept medical coupons. Sometimes private insurance companies will also cover it.
  4. 3 - 6 months: INFUSION of fluid into the amniotic sac (or `instillation`)... may be done in rare cases, for instance if the woman's life is in danger. This type is very rarely done now (1/10 of 1 % or about 1 per thousand abortion procedures in Washington State in 2003), but was used in the 1970`s and 1980`s.
  5. 3 - 9 months: INTACT DILATION AND EXTRACTION (also called `D & X` or `IDE`) is also very rare (also about 1 per thousand abortion procedures in Washington State in 2003). It could be done because something has gone catastrophically wrong with a pregnancy.

Yes that is true, it is very young to make such a drastic decision......If I had only one child my doc would have said no to me aswell.....I actually had to wait until I turned 21 to have the surgery so I waited 4 months! Good Luck with your lil one:)~

MyLilAidan - 18 days ago.
yeah, she was probably just trying to change my mind because i am only 21 and this will be my first. Lot of doctors discourage it so young.

MyLilaidam- Your doctor should know that there are several differant ways of tube tying.....Mine were actually burned so there was no way for them to reconnect my only option of conceiving again was through a reversal. Some doctors will offer differant option before they tie someone up, my thing was that I had already had 3 children and I was only 20yrs old. My doctor new I was on the pill becuase he is the one who prescribed it to me......he did go over the facts with me and I understood them so I went on ahead with the surgery. I knew that in order for me to ever conceive again I would have to undergo a reversal. I do not regret my decision at all everything has worked out just perfect for me and my family.

this has nothing to do with abortion, just in responce to the tube tying, i asked my doctor if i could get one if i have c-section, i'm 21 and she told me no. Due to the fact that they can reconnect at such a young age and its very difficult to do though c-section. Thats just what she told me, birthcontrol and plain old NO SEX will work 100% better.

I had my first daughter at the age of 16 my 2nd daughter came along at the age of 18 and my son whom is now 9yrs came to us at the age of 20......I tied my tubes after my son, I was taking birth control when I got pregnant with my last two but for some reason it didnt seem to work for me.......but that is all good I wouldn't change it for the world my babies are grown and healthy. I remarried and just had a tubal reversal last October and my new baby boy is due in September:) I am so happy to have my 3 eldest and my baby boy coming soon:)~ I have a sister whom had an abortion, it was a very tough thing for her to do but all 11 of us siblings supported her, not all of us agreed but we had to understand that it wasnt up to us it was her that needed to deal with it. We supported her and 3yrs later she gave birth to a healthy baby boy:)~

I had my first daughter at age 17, then less than a year later we became pregnant again. We decided to keep it, but then I started to have very bad symptoms, passing out, large blood clots, etc. My doctor suggested an abortion because I had something wrong with the placenta and the baby and I had a 50-50 chance of surviving. I took his advice and did it. It was very hard for me to do. But now I have another daughter who is happy any healthy and another daughter on the way! I don't think I will ever have an abortion by choice but as a last resort in medical condition. Hopefully that will never happen to me again.

I work with someone who has had 8 abortions in total. But after the first abortion, she had a son with no problems at all. Then like 2 years later she had a daughter with no complications. She had 2 or 3 inbetween her son and daughter. And the rest after her kids were born. But never any complications. From what she explained to me, since all of her abortions were early first trimester abortions, they pose little if not no risk at all on later pregnancies. I guess she couldn't take birth control, but I didn't ask. Anyway, shes like 36 now and she just recently got remarried and theyre trying to concieve. So far she hasn't gotten pregnant though, I guess we'll see if it affected her after all.

In my university years i once tried to do a study about abortions in a north african country.....wasn't that easy to come by scientific data. but during my time i talked to many women who have had at least 2 and some up to 5 abortions....and still went on to have healthy babies later.

i had a friend who had 4 abortions amd 2 m/s and now shes 35 weeks pregnant and the baby is doing fine

Tori(a.k.a. Tinkerbell) - 21 days ago.
i've not had any abortions but this one site says'Women who have had two or more abortions have twice as many first trimester miscarriages in later pregnancies.'

misz-cashis-oct08 - 21 days ago.
i haven't but i know that 3 abortions is like the max u can get w.out risking not being able to have kids later.

lulu31 - 25 days ago.
Has anyone experienced more than 3 abortions?
