I need some help, my baby eats for about 10-15 mints and thn sleeps I can seem to keep him up to have a good feeding. I have also noticed that if I give him formula he poops and stays up and sleep s longer. I had to give him formula because the doctor said he had lost too much weight from birth about 2 pounds, can someone help me?

So after approx. 8 months of pumping exclusively, I am finally going to drop my last pumping session. I’m only pumping once a day now (down from 10 x per day) and only get 2 oz total. My daughter is almost 14 months now. I really envisioned nursing her until 2 or 3 years old, but at 5 months she started fighting the breast after going to bottles at daycare and I was too stressed with a new job, and new baby to battle her over it. Part of me is very nervous since I half convinced myself that when we go camping/hiking this summer we will get lost out in the woods and my milk will be the only thing that keeps us alive, but I know that is crazy thinking…so I’m ready to be done with this chapter of motherhood, at least until the next one comes along! Hopefully baby number two will be easier. I think I’ll still bring fenugreek and my remaining domperidone with me camping just in case I need to re-lactate in the woods :-)

Mummy22; Don’t beat yourself up over bfing; do what you can and know that no matter what, you love your babies. Also, it can easily take up to a month for your supply to regulate…may go to the pediatrician’s office and do a weigh and feed (get baby naked, weigh him, then nurse, then weigh him again…it is the only way to tell exactly what he is getting from the breast). Good luck, and hang in there!

I’ve posted this a few times, but it sounds like there are some new moms on this site that my benefit from compression pumping. Essentially, use a combination of hand expression, and pumping to help “empty” the breast during each feeding/pumping. Although I was an under producer, this technique helped me get about an extra ½ ounce each pumping…considering I only pump 2 oz total each pumpin, an extra ½ ounce is HUGE for me. Other people I know were able to get several extra ounces. Furthermore, because it helps you access more milk, it stimulates your body to produce more, which in turn ups your production. There is additional helpful info on this site too.

bf bubs earlier and supplemented only 30 mls, he was out for the count for 3.5 hours :) supply defo increasing, but still not all there yet... bf tonight and he did a poo and it was a karkey green :( too much foremilk? he wasn't pooing green on the formula... i think i must be expressing only foremilk for my little man :( also, bf tonight and he took 60mls of formula... he's like clockwork i've worked out, as long as it's fluid, he will take 80 mls. depressingly that means he would have only got like 20 mls from me...... potentially.

i got mine at 3months pp with my daughter and yeh it started slowly. probly it took 6 months or maybe even longer to be like a normal period, and even then, i only say normal because it hasn't changed really since then ( up to my latest pregnancy). it never was again as painful or as heavy. well, actually, it was twice, and i had it investigated as it was so weird! turned out they were cysts on my ovaries and once they were gone? well, no more problems. don't know if that helps at all

so i have a question, My baby is 4 months, I havent had a period yet, last 2 days iv gotten what feels like period cramps, and i have had just a little bit of blood, very light amount today maybe 2x, with some heavier discharge. Is this my period trying to start maybe?? when did you first get a period, or did you get one at all while breastfeeding..and did this happen to anyone else? And im not on any BC.

shiz - great minds think alike - i just found kellymom website this morning and was coming here to post it for others to look at!! it's a fantastic site and has given me some more confidence, which is good. basically, why i'm torturing myself about bfing is that if it's there i'd like to give it to bubs, it's what is best for him. BUT i don't wanna keep up this bottles and bfing business cause it will drive me insane! so it is gonna be one or the other, i just don't know how long i will wait and see. today is day 9, so i will probly give it another week and see where we are. i was able to pump a total of 60mls this morning for bubs (altho did not bfeed him first thing this morning, hence why so much) so this feed, i let him bfeed then have the expressed milk - and he's back to sleep! i wonder if he was fussy last night as it would appear now i had a virus yesterday and seems to be gone now, but if it upset me and my body, then probly it upset him too? altho the kellymom website said it wouldn't :S anyway, that's only the second full real bfeed he's received since birth, seems so small, but big step for us! :D after reading the kellymom website, i've come to the conclusion that given my body is so sensitive to hormonal changes, that's why i struggle with my milk coming in and then maintaining it... so i'm at war with my own body... :( i hope to win, but i lost the battle last time...

Mummy-i have one thats the same way. On average its like 1/3 less than its counter part. Pumping tips-check this site out..its wonderful!!!
http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/bf-links-pumps.html#tips
Hope some of these tips help. I roll nipples before i start and then message and compress while pumping. And about your GF...I know nothing about that and wow is all i can say. I give you Kudo's for getting thru each day! Keep up the good work mama! And about your lo being fussy...as there lastnight too. Must have been in the air.
Cmmbear-good job! I have recently started the co-sleeping (kinda) and my supply jumped like crazy!
Amorgan-kudos to you for getting up in the middle of the night. I did that until last month and decided to quit..now i pump after Bailey eats in the morning and it gives me that extra few oz...but mine is to donate...but seriously-kudos hun!

cmmbear - that's great! i would love to do that but i would seriously be a wreck the next day :S since i had glandular fever, i really can't do without my sleep or little sleep. even last night, baby was being fussy (bf and formula, he had a grump) and at 2am, that was it for me, i passed out even though he was crying and hubs took over. i know how bad that sounds, but i wish i could tell you girls how much gf has affected my ability to do even the most basic tasks sometimes. i don't have it anymore, but my stamina has seriously been affected. i don't let it get to me as much as i used to, i just try to look after myself, take my vit b's, keep my vit c intake up and my immunity in good condition and sleep well. but the sleeping part when compromised leaves me with days like yesterday - i slept (passed out) all morning, headaches all afternoon, high blood pressure, nauseaus, generally feeling unwell. it's fine and dandy now when hubs is home, but what about next week when he goes back to work? eeeek

well tried the milk thistle and the fenugreek now and tbh, if they are doing anything, it's not much... maybe brought my supply in a little sooner than it would have otherwise. i'm not sure my supply is 'in' yet either. i mean, last time it didn't come in until day 10 and today is only day 9. i have a small increase - i can express 40mls! so that's double what i could get! :D but it's still only just over 1oz. anyways, it's getting there... slowly. hoping the next 2 days show a big difference, i must admit i'm getting discouraged. i have one boob i can get more milk from as well. the other boob is really stubborn ^_^ i use heat packs on it and that does help, but i probably get like 15mls from that boob and 25 from the other one. i know there is still milk in my right boob, it's sooooo annoying. any suggestions on methods of getting the milk out? i tried heat pack, massage, shower, watching baby, trying to imagine him eating... but i don't know if it's the let down that's the problem, i think it's a difficult boob grr

**Mummy-thanks, I was thinking I wasn't pumping as much as most do. My son drinks 14-16oz a day while I'm at work and I have tried so hard to keep him on breastmilk only. He is 4 1/2 months old and I havent had to supplement yet but I pump 3 times a day at work and I get up in the middle of the night to pump. I am really proud of any woman that tries breastfeeding, it isn't easy by no means and takes alot of added work. But I woundn't take it back for anything, the bond with my son compares to nothing in this world!!!! I hope all of you ladies that are having trouble stick with it and hopefully things will get better!!!

I tried what one of you suggested about letting baby sleep with you and just nurse off and on all night. It worked! I have also been taking the Fenugreek but just couldn't get that extra ounce that I needed by just pumping. Thanks for the tip!

the mmt i'm sure is the same as milk thistle - i get mine in a tablet form, it does defo work and doesn't taste yuk cause it's a tablet.
today feel really really really rubbish, i have a cranking headache and i need to then see the gp to check my bp ... :( but i have to wait on hubs to drive me as i can't drive yet... bf bubs last night, he got well cranky cause he bf for a while then had bottle, same amount grr and he was awake too long and got cross. same thing happened but not as bad this morning. he's such a happy baby i feel crap about it all.......

Air Cleared!!! Ok so Take 1 cup of steel cut oats (not the instant stuff) and 1 cup water...set it out for 7 hours (this is the fermenting part) and eat. Heat it up, mix whatever you want to make it tasty..I put lots of fruit in it. Some people i have heard the instant works..some i have heard that they got results not setting it out for 7 hours but i would say that letting it ferment will give you the best outcome. You can split that mix up and eat it in two sittings...just whatever you need. I would do it and eat it on the way to work. This is really the only thing that worked for me. The fenugreek was so crazy-i smelled like syrup so bad my dh would dream about pancakes and make pancakes each morning...I still have like a half a huge jar sitting in the cupboard! Anyway...you change it around to meet your needs but thats the basic..1 cup oats + 1 cup water* 7 hours 'fermenting' then eat.

hey shiz, yeh could you let me know please about the fermented oats? that would be good. shame fenugreek didn't work for you! it did dwindle in the end for me last time, i hope that doesn't mean it might not work this time... i've started taking it tonight. i've noticed an increase in my supply today, i've been able to partially b/f today as well as express a teeny amount. bubs loves to bf and appears to prefer my milk over formula. what a champ :) drinking about 3litres per day atm, carry over from diabetes in pregnancy, can't help myself... but still dehydrated argh :( can't drink enough... it's better than when i was preggers, but still a pain.

shiz, no offence was taken :) i totally got what you were saying... and maybe i'm where you were at with your daughter and don't trust my body enough... i'm hoping that this trust will build... all i can think about is how bad it was with my dd and ergh everything else that surrounded my pregnancy and then problems that came after. there are lots of ifs and buts, i need to try to remember this is a new experience with a new baby who is very different to my daughter. i was in my own way trying to make what you were suggesting relevant to my life, totally i didn't take any offence :) air cleared?

staying in bed with my lo for an entire night and letting him nurse almost constantly, worked wonders with my milk supply! i lost a night of sleep but for me it was worth it because i was very commited to EBF.
Luv2bemama - SNS didnt work too well with me, but i found it very diificult to actually do without assistance, so it was great when my midwife was there but then downhill after that.

hey Ladies!! I posted a cookie recipe last week that contains brewers yeast and oatmeal...they taste pretty good and they have increased my milk supply, I was pumping 10-12 ounces a day and now I am getting 15-16. I pump during the 9 hours Im at work and nurse while I'm at home. The key ingredient is the brewers yeast, as some of you may have heard to drink a beer, but this allows you to use the yeast in pretty much anything you eat!! Hope all is well!!

Ok obviously i sounded like i'm against formula and i wanted to clear the air. My first 2 boys were formula fed boys...and the only thing i can say about that is the first i was young and could care less-just wanted the screaming to stop (Yes i know how it is with a child that screams 24/7) and it helped him. Then the second was 8 years later and i remembered how easy bottle feeding was and didn't really give breastfeeding a chance after he was hospitalized a week after coming home. I thought i failed as his mother-but made sure my lil man had food..so formula it was. NOBODY explained a thing to me on how breastfeeding works...how/when the milk is made...not a thing. My lil girl was supplemented with formula. I didn't trust my own body to take care of my child. I spent many hours, days, now months researching all of this, talking with LC after LC after LC to make sure i'm doing what is right. I'm no genius and i don't know everything but I do know enough and have enough breastfeeding ladies that call me constantly to help that i don't think my advice is too far off. Mummy-I didn't say that staying in bed with your lo is the only way to get your supply up. It was only a suggestion. In your previous post there was no mention that you had other children. I really don't think my boys would let me do that either! Obvioulsy you tried with your dd and you said you don't want to be back to where you were 3 years ago..i was only giving suggestions to avoid being where you were 3 years ago (according to your description). Theres many other ways to help up supply...MMT, fermented oats (if you want to know how to make it i can tell you), fenugreek (which by the way....does absolutely Nothing for me..i would have loved a 900% increase!!), up water intake, camping out on the couch with lo (when other children are sleeping). So anyway-just trying to help you get to EBF...without the supplements. Sorry to offend you if i did.
