angela123, could it be possible that he is teething? Even if his teeth are not close to erupting yet, they can cause pain for weeks, or even months. (they go up and down several times). Oftentimes when babies are teething they don't feed as well. I also found that my son got lazy at one point, and wasn't latching on well. To correct it, if his latch was bad I would immediately unlatch him, and help him latch like I did when he was a newborn (tickle the top lip with your nipple to make him open wide, then aim your nipple for the roof of his mouth, and put as much in as possible). It sometimes took 5 or 6 tries before he got his latch right, but after a few bf sessions, I saw an improvement, and he began latching properly again. Good luck!

angela123 - 334 days ago.
I need advice! my son is almost 11 weeks, he is EBF, and all of a sudden he is not latching properly, and not feeding well. He does not get any bottles at all as he won't take one. but any advice to get BF on track again?

sondramarie - 334 days ago.
hi ladys i want to let anyone that is having touble nursing feel free to ask me any questions i nursed my 1st until 13mths and my 2nd until 12mths neither one ever got any formula! my 1st i stayed home with her alot of the time and was able to get away with a whole lot of pumping. which made it diffacult for me to be able to leave her alone with anyone because she was not fond of the bottle or i was not good at pumping the best thing all of you shouiold know that if u plan on going back to work and pumping to start pumping afer each feeding to inhance your milk flow and store milk for when you do go back so you have alot stored ... also if you start pumping to late it is hard to get your milk up to supply more then baby needs so you can store it and also the pump has a differnt suck. what i did with my 2nd is after i nursed her on eachsiide id hand her to hubby or put her down and pump so it made me have more milk and also my body was use to it. it is hard at first but this was super good for my babys... :) good luck

mtotowangu - 334 days ago.
I agree BF is hard, but with determination, you get through it. It's funny how it was a struggle for me and DS in the begining too, and now (he's 7 weeks) we are struggling to have him take a bottle!!! ?He's totally refused to take the bottle......

littlecavalier - 334 days ago.
ahree: Breastfeeding is a struggle in the beginning, that's an understatement! I was like you though, determined and in the end that determination (stubborness) was the only thing that got me through. I had a friend tell me 'if it's stressing you out, why don't you just quit?' Not the words I wanted or needed to hear, but I just shook my head and kept on trying. Eventually we (my son and I) finally figured out a groove and after that I can honestly say it was one of my very favorite things. Breastfeeding was never super comfortable for me, but knowing that my body was still providing all of my sons needs was such an amazing feeling. I also LOVED when he was a little older (around three months I think) and he would look up at me while nursing and smile, it was priceless. Keep on keeping on, it will get easier and you'll be so thankful you stuck with it. If there's anything I can help you with, feel free to send me a msg. I don't check here very often since my son is 3.5 lol, but I'm due in August so I'll be back :-).

mummy22 - 334 days ago.
still preggers and starting milk thistle today, anyone else start before giving birth?? i'm hoping it brings in my supply much quicker than my daughters...10 days it took with her... just interested if anyone found it helped? cheers

ahree - 334 days ago.
Hi Everyone :) I just had my baby 4 days ago and we are breast feeding. It's been a struggle.Im determined though.

shiz - 336 days ago.
Lilmama-mine did that also. Her first night she was in the nursery-i was hoping she would only sleep like an hour and i would go get her and ya-well 5 hours later i wake FREAKIN out and ran down to the nursery and she was just waking up...count your blessings that your lo stays this way for awhile..its nice to get a big chunk of sleep when your recovering from childbirth. Watch diaper counts and weights and you will be just fine!

Luv2Bamama - 336 days ago.
Lilmama--Just count your blessings! You have an easy baby who is a good sleeper. Just make sure baby has plenty of wet/poopie diapers and you will be fine. Plus, you'll have your two week check up next week and you'll be able to see the weight gain! You're doing great!

lilmama18 - 336 days ago.
my son is 1 week old today and during the night he can sometimes go 5 hours without eating im just worried hes not getting enough he also doesnt cry very often to eat i just feed him every 3 hours and i set an alarm to feed him at night anybody have the same promblem

I was just given a cookie recipe that should increase milk supply from my lactation nurse so I wanted to share with you guys in case anyone was in need: Cookies that Do Work to Increase Breast Milk!! There are a few ways to increase breastmilk that have been proven to work. You can try supplements such as More Milk Plus by Motherlove or just plain old fenugreek supplements. Another proven method is nursing more often throughout the day and night. Yet another way is a recipe that worked for me and many others that incorporates a few things that have been known to help increase breastmilk. These cookies are easy to make and taste great. You can alter the recipe however you want as long as you keep the main ingredients in it. The ingredients that you will need are: 1 cup of butter, you can use Olivio or another olive oil type butter, one with flaxseed in it also has added health benefits 1 cup of sugar 1 cup of brown sugar 4 tablespoons of water 2 tablespoons of flaxseed meal (found at health food stores) 2 large eggs, using eggs with omega in it is beneficial, but not required 1 tsp of vanilla 2 cups of flour, whole wheat flour is recommended 1 teaspoon of baking soda 1 teaspoon of salt 3 cups of oats (oatmeal, not instant though), thick cut work best 1 cup or more of chocolate chips, peanut butter chips or any that you like, white chocolate is also great! 2-4 tablespoons of brewers yeast, it must be brewers yeast (found in health food stores) Preheat oven to 375 degrees mix 2 tablespoons of flaxseed meal with the water and set aside, you will need it a little later beat butter and sugars well add the eggs and mix stir in flaxseed mix and add vanilla to the butter mix beat well sift together the flour, brewers yeast, salt and baking soda add to butter mix stir in oats and chips scoop or drop onto baking sheet an inch apart bake for 12-15 minutes The key ingredients here for increasing breastmilk is the brewers yeast and oatmeal. Back in the day, doctors used to advise mothers to drink a beer a day because the yeast in the beer helped to increase breastmilk. Now, drinking alcohol isn't quite so advised so eating these cookies with brewers yeast in it will have the same effect, if not better. Oatmeal has been a long time remedy for low milk supply as well. Eating a bowl or two a day while nursing helps to increase. Written by motherofmany

Well i tried something a lil different, I nursed her in my kitchen! It worked I totally stayed awake! I think/ I know it what I am going to have to do to keep myself from falling asleep! She is my world and I am willing to suffer threw the baby blues and endless sleepless nights! She is all worth it!

mrslarge - 337 days ago.
hismama, i have the same problem so i started making sure i didnt lay down to feed at all. my biggest problem with laying down to feed is that i fall asleep and so does he and he doesnt get burped which in turn hurts his belly and causes him to spit up everthing he just ate. one way i keep my interest is my computer or phone. i will play games or something to keep me awake.

nickykennedy - interesting you say you suffered acute hair loss after birth!! i had with my first, handfuls of hair come out in the shower every day for 3 months. i never looked bald or anything, but when it started to grow back, omg, it looked soooo awful. then i got marrie and had this pathetic little fringe that didn't do anything :( after research, i thought i'd cracked it and maybe it was a zinc deficiency?? i was thinking of taking that after bubs delivery this time round in the hopes it makes a difference. what do you think? they say we lose all our stores of zinc when the placenta is delivered because it's all sitting in there.... i would go on, but it's a bit TMI for some. pleased to hear you say encouraging things about bfing support on this site, i truly hope this time round will be a different experience for me and it works!!! (and saves me money lol). has anyone else started milk thistle prior to giving birth to help their milk supply come in on time??

nickykennedy - 338 days ago.
Charmedby3tobe, dominique23 and PGFirsttimer I appreciate your comments so much! The comments gave me much support and confidence to do what is best for our son. I suffered acute hair loss after his birth and I refuse to take the medications just so I can breastfeed him.To be honest, I had plan to wean him at 12 months, but I would prefer if he stops on his own. Now that he has the allergic reaction to dairy, I feel so happy that I am still breast feeding. Breastfeeding is a joy to know that as a mother I choose what is best for my child. However, it is challenging when you are very tired and you need to find the energy to pump if you need to have a caregiver in your absence. Our son sleeps with us from about 4 months and I sleep on my side and breastfeed him. DH and I look over each other sleeping pattern to protect our son from getting hurt. Now that he is 1, he is conscious enough to protect his territory and will push away a had that may disturb his personal space.

mummy22 - 338 days ago.
from the hard work that is involved in pumping, i agree it's not the nicest thing, but sometimes there isn't any other option. if your baby is crying/screaming 8-10 hours per night but supposedly fulfilling the weight requirements and the wet nappy requirements, what other way is there? mine was satisfying both and it nearly killed me to listen to that, then i pumped and worked out why - 2oz on a GOOD day (BEFORE a feed) was just simply not enough and as soon as i got some supplementation going on, everything changed and i was then able to bf for 5mo p/t and keep my sanity. pushing the milk thistle and fenugreek once again, it's good stuff. bf can be a very fulfilling experience, or a nightmare :( i wish everybody luck and i've got my fingers crossed for when my baby arrives next week!! looking forward to bf him and it going 10000 times better than with my daughter :)

Ready4No2 - 338 days ago.
I didn't say pumping was a horrible thing. I said it's a horrible way to tell how much one's LO is getting when they nurse as baby is more efficient at getting the milk out than a pump.

jenlynnp - 338 days ago.
I Nurse my little one in bed with a pillow so if we fall asleep it is ok. I dont like him sleeping in my bed because I am scared my DH will roll on him. But if it works for you where you can lay on your side and feed your baby maybe try it :) If I fall asleep nursing he is just laying across me and when I wake up I move him into his own bed.

dominique23 - 338 days ago.
HisBabyMama85 - i did the same thing! it always scared me i would jolt awake thinkin omg i fell asleep! i started nursing my lo in bed with a pillow under her or u could try a boppy just to kinda keep her in place , but now my lo sleeps with me so i just lay on myside feed her and we both go back to sleep . i like the timer idea.

HisBabyMama85 - 338 days ago.
mummy22 - she is 1 week and my partner doesnt seem to want to help since i am the only one with the food supply. i tried the pillows and she slipped onto the pillows which is a good thing in a way. MG5 I diodnt think of the timer next time i am going to have to try that, and i feed her in both a chair and rocker and a floor, i try to move around to keep me awake I am willing to try anything in order to prevent me from fall asleep and hurting herin any way.

amorgan1129 - 338 days ago.
**Hisbabymama85** how old is your LO? for about the first 6 weeks I did the same thing, I finally just started putting pillows around me and propping baby up so if my arms relaxed he wasn't going anywhere but wasn't smooshed against me (to prevent suffocation) I was so scared that I would drop him (which he did slip one time but I woke up before he went anywhere thank goodness) or pull him against me but I could not stay awake. I had to get adjusted to not sleeping as much and so I decided just to prevent him from getting hurt. It was like the more I concentrated on not falling asleep, the more I did!!! LOL. Good Luck!! it will get better!!

mummy22 - 338 days ago.
mtotowangu i don't think pumping is 'horrible' at all! omg i'm not sure why someone would say that to you! first time round bf for me was a nightmare. i had no support and baby was screaming 8-10 hours per night :( i tried pumping, i got 2 oz once, both boobs, and that was teh MOST i ever got in one sitting! i just got blank faces and then they said baby was more efficient at sucking the boob dry. i'm sure she was... but was still starving!!! BLESS HER. I highly recommend milk thistle and fenugreek to boost your supply if you feel the need. i will warn you tho, fenugreek has been known to cause tummy pains - unbearable ones, so just be careful. at least with fenugreek you only need to take it for a short time for a permanent increase, with the milk thistle, you need to keep taking it. good luck! i hope it works out for you.

Micaela~Im sorry. I cant remember the name, but I just saw them at the store. I'll get back to you on that. They had an awesome bottle/sippy starter set that I almost bought. **Hisbabymama85**~ oh my goodness thats scary! Unfortunately there was a very sad situation here in my hometown not too long ago where a father fell asleep with his infant and she slipped on to the bed face down and passed away due to suffocation. So yes, lets please come up with ideas to help. Are you feeding in a chair? Or a rocker? It sounds silly, but if you've already tried all of those things, what about a baby sling. That way baby doesnt slip if you accidentally fall asleep again. Or maybe you can set a small timer to go off (like a kitchen timer) after 15-20 minutes from when you start the feeding. Another idea that can be just temporary is to have another person keep you company and stay watch till after the feeding (like the hubby, or whomever is helping you). My fiancee' would stay up with me every night until I got the hang of it. And I know this can be a touchy subject, but the baby sleeps with me. So at the night feedings, we both just fall asleep together, and then instead of moving the baby, I make hubby trade me places so that baby stays away from the edge. Lol When I get up, he gets up to move. But dont feel sorry for him, I swear he does it now in his sleep. But maybe those are some ideas to start with.

HisBabyMama85 - 338 days ago.
I have a question i hope anyone can help me with, at night when i nurse my LO I always fall asleep with her, How can I stop that from happening? She already slipped out of my hands once already and I do not want that to happen ever again! I tried getting uncomfortable, cold wash clothes, putting lights on but I always seem to fall asleep and I need to stop because I feel that I am going to drop her! Help me please if anyone can! I am willing to try anything at this point!

charmedby3 - 338 days ago.
nicky, my son is 13 months and still nursing, with no plans to stop any time soon. I stopped pumping at work at 12 months, but had enough frozen milk to supply him at daycare until the middle of last week. Now I send whole cow's milk to daycare, and nurse at home, but he is not interested in the cow's milk at all. I think I might try goat's milk next week instead... but if you are still pumping and sending him breastmilk to daycare there is no reason at all to give him cow's milk, or soy milk! As long as he is getting his calcium (which he gets from your milk) he is fine. You are doing a great job mama!
