Hello ladies, i was wondering if any one can recommend a good sippy cup for a breast fed baby. He uses a bottle when im gone, but he is five months and i want to start using a sippy cup..any suggestions would be awesome!

letty005 - 339 days ago.
Thank you ladies. I been pumping more. I dont know why i thought that the more i waitted to pump the more milk i would have. Lol.. i still need to get the nipple shield nust to help baby out a little. He latched yesterday for a while. I dont know if he was drinking some or not but he was pretending to be drinking and was calm, so i dont know. It didnt hurt at all so that is why i am thinking he wasnt getting anything. Lol...

dominique23 - 339 days ago.
nickykennedy- breast milk is best...they just say you can give your lo cows milk at 1yr if they arent still nursing . its not a requirement. he gets more nutrtion from your milk then a cow! id say you can skip all that and the soy milk if you wanted just continue giving him breastmilk.

Ready4No2 - 339 days ago.
Nicky - I don't know where you heard that about milk. The WHO recommends BFing to 2 years and beyond. There is no need to introduce cow's milk if your LO is still nursing or taking your milk often.

nickykennedy - 339 days ago.
Hi ladies, why is it advised that a 1 year old be fed whole milk? I am very concerned as my son just turned 1 on 3-10-11 and I am still breastfeeding. I have apart time job for 20 hours weekly which I express milk and send 8 ounces which he rarely drinks as the caregiver doesn't warm it 1st. My son is allergic to milk, maybe dairy as he breaks out in hives when he has yogurt or milk and he also vomits. This is day 2 of trying him on soy in his cereal, I have not seen any allergic reaction, but I wonder about his nutrients in take. He is not a big eater, but he will take cream wheat or oatmeal. I just would like some discussion on the importance of whole milk if I am still breastfeeding.

Letty-keep at it. Your boobs need to be 'trained' at the pump. Baby will always get out more than your pump ever will. So basically you need to up your supply to whatever your baby needs. If you can...have baby latch when at home. A fussy baby is a normal baby-which means Fussy baby is telling your body to make more. So camp yourself out on the couch and nurse nurse nurse all you can. Oh and it helps to lay in bed with baby...skin to skin contact also helps make more milk. And try warm compress or massage & roll nipples before pumping. Its just getting the 'juices' flowing! The warm always helps me in the morning to get out as much as i can after lo feeds-i pump after and can get maybe half a bottle's worth.

letty005 -my baby is 5 months and i still use Nipple Sheilds so that he will be able to breast feed. He just never really got the hang of it. I would suggest those for when your at home pumping is different from BF and you will have a better chance of building up your milk if he is atleast latching on a few times a day.

dominique23 - 341 days ago.
letty005-fenugreek works really good, just a herb u can get at a vit store, health foods store or online it doubled my supply within 2 days of taking it, also teas mothers milk, i would try thatesp since u have to go back to wrk.go to kellymom.com it has more suggestions http://www.kellymom.com/herbal/milksupply/fenugreek.html

letty005 - 341 days ago.
I am not nursing him first because he cant latch and second because i will have to go back to work so i have to pump either way. I will probably try to latch him on today, i guess i gave up in him to easilly. I would get sad for him when he would scream. I cant stand hearing him cry.

msastrachan - 341 days ago.
letty005- if this is your first baby you will have a harder time building up your milk supply, which sounds like you are doing. There is a postive and negative to what you can do to help get more milk in. Continue pumping and nursing and you will get your milk supply up but once you become engorged then your body will not make that much milk next time. So you kind of have to do it everytime you become engorged in order to make alot. But just courious, why are trying to get up your supply? Breastmilk is pretty much supply in demand. It will make as much as your baby needs. As your baby gets bigger so will your milk supply. I nursed my first for 11 months, my second for 28 months and I am currently nursing my newborn. With my first I was nursing every hour and half and when I pumped it would take me 30 minutes to get barely 4 oz...then as he got bigger I pumped again at 6 months and was getting twice as much in the same time. So that was my experience. But everyones body is different. Good luck mama!

letty005 - 341 days ago.
What happens if we pump ourselves dry. I been trying to get my milk supply up and i cant pump more than 1 1/2 oz thats both breast conbined. I been drinking lots of water , eatting plenty and resting. What else can i do?

mizrice88 - 341 days ago.
Thank y'all I actually nursed at the park today for a couple of mins. I figure I will make sure I have a nursing cami on when I go out. I'm going to practice more at home too so I can get it down.

MG5 - 342 days ago.
Mizrice88~ Sorry. I do wear a stretchy cami underneath my t-shirts or blouses, then I pull the the cami down over my boob from the top(underneath my other shirt so I'm still covered), then lift my over shirt from the bottom and bring the baby up like *mototomangu* My stomach and back stay covered with my cami, while my top is also covered from my shirt on the top. Hardly anyone can tell I'm nursing unless I choose a nursing cover. Hope I explained it a little better. I wish we can draw pictures! Lol. :)

mtotowangu - 342 days ago.
mizrice88 ~ when I NIP, I lift my top from the bottom, place baby on boob, then let the top drop. That way, very little of my boob is exposed verses when I remove my boob from the top or side... I'm not sure if I'm explaining it right, but I hope you get the picture. Try different positions at home and see what will make you most comfy in public. Good luck :)

mizrice88 - 342 days ago.
Mg5 I have a nursing bra and nursing cami. When your talking about tops do you mean your shirt. I usually wear tshirts all the time there not tight I wear them bigger then need be. I'm going to try and nurse at like I'm in public for practice.

MG5 - 343 days ago.
Mizrice88~ I just use a lightweight receiving blanket ( I always carry one in my diaper bag), not a nursing cover. I make sure that my tops are breastfeeding friendly. I'll be the first to admit that I do not and never have bought breastfeeding tops. I just make sure that the tops I wear are either loose enough, or stretchy to a certain degree to be able to pull the down from one side(over my boob), or wear a stretchy tank under my regular shirt to be able to lift it up and be completely covered. I tuck the blanket under my bra strap, and get situated before I get baby, then nurse her. I don't use a pillow, just arm strength. Lol I hold her up or rest her on my legs. If at the store, I feed and walk with her. If there's a place I can stop, like a food court at the mall, I'll stop and sit. Good Luck! Hope this helps just a little. :)

Ready4No2 - 343 days ago.
Mtotowangu - pumping is a horrible way to tell how much your LO is getting. Your baby will always be more efficient than a pump. The best way to know for sure is to do a weigh-feed-weigh. I EBFed for 6 months and then BFed for another 15 months (just weaned at 21 months) and I was only ever able to pump 2oz total but I'm confident my DD was always able to get enough. Another way to know is going by your LO's wet and dirty diapers. Good luck, but don't stress over your pump!

mtotowangu - 343 days ago.
Hi ladies. Just pumped for the first time today. How long do you ladies usually pump for? I have a manual pump and after about 10 minutes, I was exhausted. I got just a tad over 4oz, but I don't kow if I pumped myself dry or not. How do you tell? I'm pumping because I'd like to know how much DS is getting out of every feed. At the moment, I'm clueless how as to how much he gets... About NIP~I do it and at times without a cover..like at the clinic or doctors or play group. Otherwise, I'll cover

mizrice88 - 343 days ago.
I want to bf in public but I haven't figured out the hold to do it. At home I prop lo on a pillow to feed any suggestions would be grateful so I can stop going to the car or bringing a bottle.

Krystaldawn - 343 days ago.
Shell:: did that happen at Walmart? I saw a pic of a lady in a motorized cart breastfeeding with her entire boobie hanging out..no discretion at all.

Tunny904 - 343 days ago.
amanda: yeah, it definitely takes your body sometime to get back to normal...especially since you are still BF, it will probably not be back to normal until a little while after you are done, but everyone is different, so it depends! My LO is 10 months and I have yet to get my period back (thank goodness!!)

NIP is such a sensitive issue. Our society has been brainwashed to think that breastfeeding is “unnatural” and “perverted”. From the 1940’s/1950’s, women were told that only poor people nursed, and that formula was the best thing for children. Many people from that generation encouraged their children to continue the myth. Furthermore, we live in a society where it has been historically hard for working mothers to try to continue to nurse when they go back to work. Fortunatally, due to new laws, employers are required to provide space (not a bathroom) to their nursing mothers for at least 12 months, although some states are even more generous. And now you can claim pumping equipment on your taxes or through your FSA. Overall, we need to continue the education process. While I see nothing wrong with NIP whether or not there is a cover, we need to have a national mind frame shift. I think women who stage “Nurse-ins” to punish businesses for being rude to a breastfeeding mother only hurts the cause because it makes the nursing uneducated people more angry and less willing to learn about the good BFing does because they are offended by the “in your face” of the act. The best thing that we as mothers can do is start educating young children and teenagers. My friend’s 5 year old was fascinated when he saw me nursing my daughter (apparently he was too young to remember his mom BFing his brother)…he asked me what I was doing and I explained that God gave mommies special milk to give their babies to make them strong and healthy like he was. Every time he watched me nurse, he would repeat that to me, or his younger brother (both of whom were BF). Then one afternoon we were in the park, He told a lady sitting on the bench next to me while I nursed that, “she is giving the baby special mommy milk to make her big and strong like me!” People just smiled and continued on with their activities. Also, my best friend’s 16 year old stayed with us the summer we had our daughter and she and I had MANY conversations about BFing (her mom formula fed both her and her sister). I answered any questions she had, let her come to Dr’s appointments and ask questions to the LC and the Dr. and just wanted her to feel comfortable with the process, and know about the ups and downs. She saw my struggles with BFing, and my endurance, and told me that she wants to BF her kids when she has them. It is about educating society, and supporting women. Hopefully in a few more decades, we can eliminate the ignorance, continue the positive momentum BFing is getting recently.

Kuddos to you Cathy! Sometimes I do think that using a cover screams, 'my boobie is out, but you cant see it!' Haha jk With family situations, I do the same, but in public, just in case, I use the cover. Julie has a habit now of letting go to try and see whats going on. When she does that, she gets sprayed. And one time my hubby was laying next to us, he distracted her, and he got sprayed! I was laughing soo hard! I can just imagine that happening out in public. I wonder what the other person would do?! Anyhow, I admire the fact that you dont use a cover. But I do know exactly what you mean about people being clueless that the baby's even eating. I guess I just have a problem when people have a strong opinion on something they know very little about. Thats just my argumentative hormonal side. Lol

~cathy~ - 344 days ago.
MG5 - I am one of those people who will breastfeed just about anywhere. I feel that if your uncomfortable with it than you leave.. lol I have never used a cover but i do do it discreetly and most people tell me they didn't even know I was breastfeeding. If i take her out somewhere i always try and wear a zip up jacket and that seems to hide just about everything.

MG5 - 344 days ago.
Lol, that's soo true! I jusy thought it was funny because she made a sarcastic remark about parents that dont plan around their childs schedule. I have 5 children. My kids are on my schedule, which is our family's schedule. Not the other way around. If baby gets hungry, I feed her. But I definately cover up. I would never just drop what I was doing to go back to my car. I wouldnt accomplish anything if I did that. Not to mention its uncomfortable, and over here really hot.
