so iv been taking the fenugreek for 2 days now iv only been taking 2 pills a day, they are 620 a pill , and i noticed my armpits smell like maple syrup this morning haha, and i have noticed a little bit of an increase when i pump, im getting 3oz after a reg feeding wheres before i was getting 1-2oz, so i think tomorrow ill increase it to 4pills.

SunshineMaria - 362 days ago.
dominique--you can get fenugreek at vitamins.com for cheaper (I also bought it at a health foods store my first time). Once you start taking it like they say (until you smell like maple syrup), you'll want to get it for cheaper. I haven't needed it with this baby, but I took 16-20 pills a day with my first.

dominique23 - 363 days ago.
started my Fenugreek 2day, just wanting to up my supply so i can pump and freeze more hopfully that will work. got it at health food store 14 dollars for 250 pills not sure if thats a good price or not? iv seen it online for 3 or 4 dollars a bottle but i think that was for 100 pills..i just didnt want to wait for it ! i was reading about all the benefits of Fenugreek i might just keep taking it! its really good for you treats and helps tons of things.

Luv2Bamama - that sounds intense!! You are a trooper for sure. Good luck

parkersmommy1 - 364 days ago.
wendy01: i think dd and i have thrush too, but only one breast is sore. Im getting ready to take her to the dr now. Ill let you know if it is thrush, because then it is definately possible to have it in just 1 side.

Luv2Bamama - 364 days ago.
True, once most people establish a supply and continue to nurse/pump you can go off the herbs and/or prescription meds. My daughter quit nursing at 4 or 5 months old, and I could never get her to latch back on (even with LC help), so I was pumping 8-10 times per day to get as much milk as possible, then supplementing with donor BM and occasional formula. My body didn’t respond to the pump, and I only got (still get) 1 oz per side (2 oz total). The fenugreek and domperidone were the only things that raised my pumping output; fenugreek gave me an extra ½ oz per pumping; domperidone gave me an extra oz. Within days of going off either, my output drops back, since the pump doesn’t stimulate my milk production. I’ve made it a week past the 1 year mark and counting even with my challenges! Hopefully when the next one comes along it will be easier!

Hey Ladies...PLEASE HELP!!! My DD is 9 months old and we are BF'ing. About a week ago I started experiencing a stabbing pain in one of my breasts after nursing, and now that nipple is very sore, and the pain is there after every feeding, but just on one side. So, I am wondering if I could have thrush on just one breast? Any help would be appreciated. Also, I see that Nystatin seems to be what Drs prescribe. Do I put that on my breast and if so, is it safe for DD?

Mommy2Jr - 365 days ago.
Luv2Bamama - with Fenugreek, once you reach the supply needed you can stop taking it. Wasn't sure if you were aware of this.. it shouldn't take months to obtain your (or your LO's) Desired amount.

Luv2Bamama - 365 days ago.
BTW, I know there are many moms out there using fenugreek for their supply. I found I was spending close to $50 a month on the stuff, so I ended up ordering from www.drugstore.com. They had a bottle that contained twice as many pills for half the price-same brand and everything. They ship for free on orders over $25 and I had my shipment in 2 days. They also included some chocolates and tea in my shipment. No this is not paid advertisement, I was just so happy at the service, I thought I would pass along the info!

Yes jealousy is VERY normal for breastfeeding mamas, and I’m the WORST! I know I have struggled the entire time I’ve been providing BM to my daughter. From the beginning, I was jealous of all the babies who were gaining weight on BM (mine didn’t get out of the 3rd percentile until 6 – 9 months old). When she quit nursing at 4 or 5 months, I was jealous of all the moms whose babies did still nurse (I still am jealous). I’m always jealous of the women who pump more than 2 oz at a time, which is all I get. My co-worker would pump 16 oz EACH pumping and she just decided to up and quit pumping/nursing when her son hit 4 months old. I think because we all want to do the best for our children, we have the natural tendency to compare to other moms who are doing something “better” than we are.

charmedby3 - 365 days ago.
felicia, yes, it is normal for her to be jealous. She wanted to give her baby the best, and wasn't able to, so now she has a hard time seeing you doing it for yours. My son turned 1 last Thursday and we are still breastfeeding. He never had a bottle, and I plan to let him self-wean. My BIL is the only one who really asks me about it, but I just tell him that breastmilk is specifically made for human babies, changes just for them as they grow, and that the WHO recommends breastfeeding until AT LEAST two years of age, and as long after as mom and baby want to continue. His comment is usually 'but he has teeth!' And my response is 'yes, and I taught him not to bite. His teeth aren't an issue.' He tends to let it go at that, until the next time when he says 'you're STILL breastfeeding!?'

My daughter Lily is a little over 4 months old and we are still EBF. I am so proud of myself and her of course. Lately I have been getting alot of people telling me to switch her to the bottle but I dont want to I honestly love the connection that her and I share our own little bond :) Any suggestions on how to either make people understand that there is nothing wrong with wanting to BF for as long as I can. I know that BF is the best thing for my little girl and I do not plan on stopping. I am probably not making any sense anymore but some advice would be nice and appreciated.. Also my sister had a baby boy in Feb 2010 and I had my daughter in Oct 2010 so there is an age gap. My sister did not breastfeed as long as she would have wanted (low milk supply). I am fortunate as my milk came in full supply and I meet the demands for my daughter with just BF. Reason I mention this is because she is acting jealous about my BF and her not being able to.. is that normal for there to be jealousy??

MG5 - 366 days ago.
Julianna is 6 months old today and I've managed to EBF even with going back to school & work. She will start on infant cereal this week, and I will continue to feed and pump. Im super proud of myself. 6 months was my short term goal, now to reach my long term goal of 12 months....& maybe longer! Great job mommy's keep up the good work! :)

Luv2Bamama - 367 days ago.
Tooting my own horn: I have officially reached my goal of providing breast milk to my daughter for at least 1 year! She turned 1 on Sunday. Although she quit nursing around 4 or 5 months, I have continued to pump and provide her mostly breast milk since that time. Thanks to the donation of BM from my aunt, I have hardly needed to supplement with formula. Hurray! I almost gave up a few months ago, but managed to push through it. I started introducing cow’s milk a week before her 1 year birthday and am giving 3 oz BM to 2 oz cows milk for the time being, then will change the ratio every week or so until she is on full cows milk. I would like to continue pumping in the morning and at night so she gets some of the good stuff, but each pumping is getting less and less as I reduce them. I’m down to pumping 4 times per day (down from 8-10) and am only getting about 7 oz total for the day, so I don’t know how much longer I’ll continue. I had high hopes of nursing for 2 or 3 years, but apparently little girl had a different plan :-) I didn’t think emotionally it would be this rough on me to think I won’t be nourishing my little one…hmmm. Interesting article I found today: http://www.politicsdaily.com/2011/02/14/michelle-obama-to-promote-breast-feeding-as-irs-gives-tax-breaks/

Tunny904 - 369 days ago.
natalie, I have always fed my LO off 1 side in the morning and pumped and stored the other side...then the next feeds throughout the day I would feed her off of both sides so I wouldn't have to pump all day long.

Baby2Clr - 369 days ago.
Thank you ladies for the advice! :)

Tiana82 - 369 days ago.
For those looking to pump and BF. My daugher is now 3 months and was a preemie. Becuase this they would not let me BF her until she was 2 weeks old. Determined, I pumped using a madela pump, so she could be on strictly breastmilk. I have BF her since she was 2 weeks and she still does throughout the day. But becuase I pumped regularlyt, about every 4 hours at first and now every 6 hours, I make more milk than she consumes in a day. Now I have the choice to BF her or bottle feed her which is great! I can leave her with Grandma or Daddy can feed and bond with her. The big thing is to keep your supply up. Get lots of rest (this is why mot women have more milk in the am) and don't forget to eat. I have noticed stress also decreases my supply. Oh, and if you need to increase your supply and looking to a pump, then pump after every feeding. I can BF my daughter through the day and still pump about 20-30 oz and if I bottle feed her breastmilk then I pump about 45 oz daily. Who knows, I may just be blessed with a good supply but I find having breast and bottle allows for a happy, well rested mommy that can still bond with baby~

chellebob - 369 days ago.
To increase your milk supply you need to feed feed feed. It is the only way your body has any signal to produce more milk. Obviously all the supplements help, fermented oats, eating plenty of calories and drinking lots of water. Are you sure you are feeding frequently enough? I was surprised how often I needed to feed my baby when I first started breastfeeding. I expected her to go 3-4 hours between feeds, and some do, but I had to feed every hour and a half for quite a while for my supply to increase. She never went longer than 3 hours between feeds until I introduced some solids recently. It took a few weeks really for my body to catch up with the demand. Pumping is OK but I never had much luck with it. I can only pump off about 1oz, where as my baby is obviously guzzling much more than that!

skydivedoc - 370 days ago.
For those with low milk supply... always begin your feeding on the 'lame' side when the baby is hungriest. You can also use fenugreek. Another alternative is to drink a beer. Not a watery beer, it has to have some body to it. It takes 30 minutes for food/drink to get into the breastmilk and 3 hours for it to be out. So... if your child feeds while you're drinking the beer and is able to sleep for a couple of hours you won't have to 'pump & dump.' Discuss both suggestions with your health care provider before doing them. Fenugreek is natural but it doesn't mean it can't interact with medications. Good Luck!

Just a question. I have a low milk supply and my daughter is never satisfied off just the breast. I have gone to a lactation consultant and was told to pump after every feeding and still no luck. Any tips from anyone?

jenlynnp - 370 days ago.
natalie1387- Pump both. by the timehe is ready to eat again you will have milk again.

natalie1387 - 370 days ago.
Okay ladies I need some advise!! So my son nurses about every 2 1/2 hours. He is just over 3 weeks old. I'm going to start adding in one pumping session in the AM cause I heard that your milk supply is highest in the AM. My concern is the way that I nurse him is a little different than the way that most people do. I nurse him from only one breast every time he eats. He drains my breast every time he eats and it completely satisfys him. SO my question is what would you do if you were me with the morning pumping, do I feed him off the one side then pump both breasts or do I just pump the breast he didn't eat on? Or do I just pump the breast that he ate on so it doesn't throw off his next feeding? I'm so confused with what to do!!!

Luv2: I took her to get weighed today. She has gained back all her birth weight, plus 10.5oz in ten days. The LC happened to come in while I was weighing her, so I talked to her about the spitting up. She had an odd look on her face when I wold her the birth weight, and todays weight. i was worried that it wasn't enough weight gain. She told me it was great, most babies take 2 weeks to gain back birth weight, let alone gain almost a pound. She told me its probably due to a fast letdown, making Peyton gulp. I know I have a lot of milk, I pumped 8oz in 2minutes the other day, from 1 side. She told me to make my letdown happen, then off the breast. Also, not to pat her back to make her burp, but rub it while I have her laying on my chest, and let her lay still after each feed. So far, its worked for this last feed. We'll see how it goes later.

Has anyone stopped BF for a few weeks and then started up again? I stopped due to a thrush infection about 3 weeks ago. I EBF for 3 weeks and stopped suddenly. I now strictly formula feed but I have a strong desire to BF again. I'm just so afraid of getting the thrush again. It was so painful. Any advice?

Luv2Bamama - 371 days ago.
Parkersmommy: Very scary when they vomit; you may need to feed in smaller amounts. When my daughter caught the stomach flu @ 3 months old, the Dr. had us sirynge feed her a tsp at a time every 20-30 minutes. If she vomited, we had to wait 60 min before trying again. After like 4 hours of this routine, we could increase the amount we were feeding her to 2 tsp (but then start over every time she threw up). They needed it in small amounts to prevent dehydration and to not upset the tummy. It was a rough few days since my husband and I also had the stomach flu, but we all got through it. She lost 11 oz in 2 days, but once she stopped throwing up, she gained it all right back. Hang in there! Just remember that when they are healthy, you can’t really overfeed a breastfed baby …anything they don’t use up, they poop/pee out.
