krystaldawn- You will get better results soaking the oatmeal, but I get a boost to my supply just by eating regular oatmeal (old fashioned). Also if I notice a dip (during that TOM or after vigorous exercise) I often just drink a beer or make a smoothie with malted milk powder.

Fenugreek works as well (or it did for me) to up the supply. I got it in a health food store.
I had dd weighed today. She's 6 days old, weighed 7lb 12oz at birth, now she's already at 8lb 7oz!

luv2- The potential side effects is why I didn't take the reglan right away. I'm wishing I still lived in Canada so I could easily get the domperidone :) I did re-latch at 4 weeks but with my son, not daughter :) He's having 1.5 oz weight gain a day so until it starts to drop I won't change anything. I always had less milk in my left than right so as long as I have enough in right I guess I'd be okay. Thanks for the suggestion on the SNS, He's 8 weeks so i'll keep and eye on it and perhaps that's what I'll have to do

Aprilrose—I tried both the reglan & the domperidone. The reglan did nothing for me, but the domperidone more than doubled my supply (as measured by pumping output). I know many women who had success w/ the reglan, but it can have bad side effects, including depression, and it isn’t meant to be used more than 2 weeks. In the US, the domperidone isn’t FDA approve, so you have to go to a compounding pharmacy w/ a prescription, and insurance doesn’t cover it so it is about $90 for a 1 month supply—also many US doctors won’t prescribe it. My LC suggested that you can order it via mail from New Zealand, but I didn’t bother trying. If I’m not mistaken, you re-latched your daughter at 4 weeks old? If you’re concerned about supply, try to nurse as much as you can on that side. You may even want to look into using an SNS to keep your baby on that breast. By the time I tried using the SNS, my daughter was 8 months old so she was aware enough to try to play with it. I truly believe if I started using it earlier when she stopped nursing (around 4or 5 months old) it would have kept her interested in nursing, and would have helped boost my supply without having to get meds. Good luck; you’re doing a great job!!

aprilrose- I take domperidone and I love it. it works fantastic and it allows me to pump and store tons of milk for when I return to work. I dont even need to take the full daily dose for it to work so my pills last WAY longer which is nice.

has anyone taken domperidone or reglan and not started as soon as the baby was born? My son is 8 weeks and I fear that my left breast is drying up and I'm thinking about taking the reglan that was prescribed when he was 1 wk old.

krystaldawn-nothing I've read says that it has to be fermented, just rolled or steel cut oats (not instant). Then again my supply hasn't doubled by any means. May not be doing anything actually-maybe I will try to ferment them. I was under the impression that to ferment them your had to add a souring agent like yogurt or sour milk before you soaked them. That sounded gross to me so I didn't bother.

Can I ask why can't I just make old fashioned oats? does it make a difference if you let them sit for 7 hours?

Krystaldawn, to make fermented oats it is best to use old fashioned oats. Mix 1 cup oats with 1 cup water, and let sit for at least 7 hours. Then heat, and add whatever flavouring makes it easier to get it down (it does become a bit slimy). Many women find that it doubles their supply almost overnight.

fermented oats? How do you do that? does it work to boost a supply?

april: i fermented them. I just bought a big ole bag of oats, and soaked it in water over night. add milk and brown sugar the next day, warm it up, and its not so bad.

parkers-does ihave to be fermented? I've just been eating steel cut oats everyday. I'm not sure I would like them fermented.

charmara: try some fermented oatmeal if you're worried abotu your supply. I did it with my first. 2 bowls of it, and my supply doubled.

Memedawn - I'm pretty sure I was told I couldn't donate for 6 months because my body would need that time to heal itself. I only donated once before I got pregnant again. Wish I'd gone one last time :-( I would wait 'til 6 months and then not stress about it at all, you should be fine.

charmara-how do you know your supply is getting low? I started off with low supply and I'm always worried that it will decrease and I won't know. Then again I go back to work in 4 weeks so I'll be pumping at least once a day. Have you made sure that you aren't having any anti-galactogogues in your diet? I know peppermint and sage can decrease milk. I'd suggest reading the Brestfeeding Mothers guide to making more milk-it may help!

parkersmommy-maybe try to pump off after each feed. This will help toughen your nipples and also make ure that you empty everyttime..it's a win win :)

parkersmommy- sounds like they just need to get tougher. Give it another week and they shouldn't be sore any more. If there's bleeding then that wouldn't be good, but if not than just wait and see :)

I could also use some advice, I am EBF and I have been asked to donate blood because we are dangerously low on my blood type in this area (I am O- the universal donor). I used to donate all the time before I got prego and did really well with it, but now I am worried about it messing up my milk supply. I have worked too hard to BF my baby I don't want to risk loosing my milk. At the same time, I really like giving blood and saving a life. I have done research on the internet and it wasn't very helpful, saying that it is up to each individual person. Do any of you have suggestions? I am thinking I might wait until she is 6 months old and on some solids before I start. My baby is 3.5 months old.

my supply is starting to get less and less. Looks like I'll be using formula sooner than later. It happened with my 2nd child too. Dried up and didn't come back :(

I had dd 4 days ago and my nipples are so cracked and sore. Im using Lansinoh brand lanolin. I'm not sure if the pain is coming from the cracked nipples, or a bad latch. When she pulls off, the nipples are flat on the bottom. The health nurse came by and said my latch was good, she was positioned right. I bf'd my first for 15 months, and was admitted with him when he got jaundice to the hospital to get help because my nipples were so bad. I dont want that to happen again.

LUV: yes, most docs say after 11 months it's okay, I'm sure 1 week is not a big deal! Good for you for nursing for so long, happy early birthday to your LO!!

So my daughter turns 1 in 7 days...I mostly give her BM, but supplement w/ Formula when I don't have enough BM. (She weaned a long time ago, but I refused to not give her the BM, so I pump). Is it ok to start giving her Cow's milk 1 week early? She eats cheese and yoghurt w/ no problems. I will only be giving her like 1 bottle a day that I am short.

momothree-i use one from the first years- just a nipple butter that is lanolin -free. i got it at target it came in a lil pack that had cooling gel pads with it, it was 15 dollars for the set. i havent seen just that cream by itself though. im sure you could prob find it online somewhere, just type in lanlion-free nipple butter should turn up some results.

Hi ladies. I'm in 24 weeks right now and am wary about bf again. When I did with my now 7yo I used lanolin and found out too late I was allergic to it and that's what caused me to crack (I almost had to get stitches within 3 weeks of using it sparingly) it was so bad. My nips just stayed so dry the Dr suggested it. Is there anything else to do/use if this happens again? I really want to try with this one. But I'm terrified it will happen again. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)
