babybellybliss - 742 days ago.
hello, i am wondering if i am exclusively pumping how many ounces should i be getting at a time (i am 3 weeks postpartum) i pump every time she eats. i plan on going back to breastfeeding how ever circumstances have it that i am pumping for the next week.

olliemom - 754 days ago.
Help Please! I really need so suggestions. I have been nursing my daughter for 6 months now and when I am with her I have more then enough milk. However I work 40 hrs a week and when I pump while I'm away from her I get BARELY anything! If anyone has any ideas on how I can increase my pumping out put I would really appreciate it!

THEWEASTBUNCH - 764 days ago.
Me too! I use the Medela pump in style. I have 2 of the older models, and they still work like a charm! 3 more months to go and my son will be 1 year old!

Heather12 - 765 days ago.
Yep thats what I used. Loved it!

Mama2B 01-10-10 - 765 days ago.
my daughter was born on december 23rd at just 4lb6oz. since she is so small, latching has been near impossible. i tried using a nipple shield, which worked for her... but caused chapping and scabbing on my nipples after a week or so. so ever since, i have been pumping exclusively. i loved the medela hospital grade pump that i was able to use in the hospital. however, since i am home now i am using a medela pump in style. is this what most of you ladies use?

Heather12 - 772 days ago.
Yes most likely that is the reason. You need to mimick how often your baby would be nursing. i think I pumped every 2-3 hrs even thru the night until Aliyah was 4 months old. I'm pretty sure that you will see that you will produce more milk once you start pumping thru the night. Pumping exclusively is hard. escpecially at first. after 4 months or so you can go longer no more than 4 hrs and can drop the night pumps.

Hey all - i had my baby on Dec. 24, 2009 - only a little over a week ago. My baby won't latch on, so I'm forced to exclusively pump. I did get a hospital-grade dual pump and pump every 2-3 hours for 30 minutes. I find that I only pump about 1 oz per breast - if that! I don't know what I'm doing wrong or if its normal to only produce this much milk in the beginning? I know you can pump more frequently to try and make your milk supply go up, but I'm currently pumping every 2 hours...I can't get much more frequent than that without pumping constantly!!!! I do admit that I do not pump overnight...my last pump session is at about 11pm and then I don't pump until I wake up....do you think this could be the reason I don't produce as much milk?

Heather12 - 784 days ago.
If you are producing enough milk only pumping 10 minutes every 4 hrs then I wouldnt change it. I pumped 20 minutes every 4 hrs and I didnt loose weight like some of the other moms I have talked to. I gained 67lbs while pregnant. The first 3 months after Aliyah was born I lost 30lb and thats all I lost that 1st year. Actually when I stopped pumping I gained about 10 to 15 lbs. So I dont think it really matters how long you pump.

lisseth82 - 785 days ago.
On the site it says I should aim to pump for approximately 20-30 minutes per breast, but I am able to empty my breast in 10minutes and I empty 6-7oz each session, so I have been wondering maybe I'm not losing any weight and I've plateau because I'm not actually mimicking the rhythm and timing as to when a baby is latched on? But I do pump ever 4hours (which is the rate my four month old feeds

Heather12 - 800 days ago.
J lynn if you need any advice on ways to boost your milk just ask.

Heather12 - 802 days ago.
I sure do know what you mean. 4 months will be here before you know it. People that have never exclusively pumped have no idea what a sacrifice its is and how hard. Your doing a great job! If I'm lucky and get to have another baby I hope that the breastfeeding goes better.

THEWEASTBUNCH - 804 days ago.
My son was nursing fine the first 6 weeks. He was a dwaddler. He would sit at the breast forever, and by the time he was done, it was time to feed again. I decided to start pumping and put it in a bottle for him. After that, he wouldn't take the breast.... lazy. The bottle was way too easy for him to get the milk. lol I have been pumping ever since. He will be 8 months old on 12/6/09. I am happy that I have made it this far. Everyday I struggle with pumping. I am tired of it. I want my boobies back to normal! I set the goal of 1 year, and it is in sight!!! Only 4 months to go!! Maybe slightly less if I use the milk that I have stored up. It can be done! I think pumping is harder, but I am thankful for my handsome, healthy son! He deserves the very best that I can give him. :0)

Heather12 - 831 days ago.
Oh man.....If I ever had that happen I would just get back on schedule and a couple days later I would be back up again.

NatashaMc - 832 days ago.
So I got over confident! I missed two pumps, that's it and now the past few days I'm pumping 8 oz less! Grr, just when I thought I had no pumping worries....

NatashaMc - 835 days ago.
Right now the goal is 10 months. O.k. it really is a year, lol. I've been trying to trick myself for the past six months by saying o.k. I met my three month goal, now it's six months, yeah I met that goal now it's eight months but really the entire time I'm thinking I really want to go a full year. Just makes it less daunting I guess!! Maybe it's time to just admit it...four more months...nope I still can't do it, two sounds so much better!

Heather12 - 835 days ago.
NatashaMc that is awesome. Keep up the good hard work! Do you plan on pumping until she is 1? Gosh I am so glad that I dont have to pump any longer. but I would do it again if I had to.

NatashaMc - 837 days ago.
Almost eight months and still going! Just thought I'd post something coz nothing has happened here in a long time :)

brandyq - 872 days ago.
oh ivehad a clogged duct before but this doesnt feel the same

Heather12 - 873 days ago.
brandyq sounds like to me you have a clogged duct. I used to get them a lot. You need to pump and pump and pump. I would pump for about 30 minutes and massage the entire time. You will know as soon as it becomes unclogged. Immediately it feels better. thats the only thing that helped me.

brandyq - 874 days ago.
Just out of curiosity why would my breast become tender again....I mean to the point of touching them hurts....

NatashaMc - 899 days ago.
lisseth82 - Same thing happened with me and six months later still pumping. I have to say I don't like pumping at all but do like the reassurance that he gets enough as well. How old is your little one?

lisseth82 - 899 days ago.
I am so glad to have been recommended to this forum. When my LO was born she lost more than her 10% weight. I was strictly breastfeeding and she just kept fighting the breast, so the Dr had me do ten minutes each breast then the rest suplement for 4days. After she gained her birth weight I went straight to breastmilk again, but I found that I liked pumping the milk better and it reassured me she was getting the proper ounces.

4thtimearoundat36 - 908 days ago.
when my second daughter was 6 weeks old I had to go into hospital for emergency appendectomy. I expressed milk as soon as I came round from surgery, although I had to throw the milk away for 24 hours, after that DH took it home after visiting me every night. It meant she only had to have formula for the first day and was glad to latch back on as soon as I came home.

campimama - 912 days ago.
brandy- Gotcha, I can't imagine pumping with the chicken pox, I was curious though...thanks for answering. BTW, it is entirely possible for you to relactate and get your supply going again. It'll take some work, and a lot of pumping, but if you want to you can. I also have a whole list of things you can do to boost supply (Check out the 2 blogs I wrote). Best of luck!
