my 12 month old woke up this morning with bright red cheeks. first when i looked at her, it looked like someone slapped her, seriously... than i saw it was on both the cheeks and from the front view, it looked like a bad sunburn, just on the cheeks... but she has not gone out in the sun. she has no appetite for the past week (i am talking about my daughter who loves to eat anything and everything) and since yesterday she has been having a bad case diarahhea. MIL, hubby, friends have been telling me all day it's probably teething but after research it looks very much like the fifth disease. and i am 6 weeks pregnant. what timing! and to make it worst, i am in a third world country where there is no medical care... i am in big trouble!

Just got home from the er with my 2 yr old. I was told tonight that he has fifth disease I am also 16 weeks pregnant. I am so worried now. I have a doc appt monday with my ob gyn. I am scared to death.Praying that the baby will be ok. My son is running a fever has the rash and red cheeks only when the fever is up. =[

lol - I see I posted here a year ago! Turns out my son was indeed cutting teeth, and the red cheeks were a result. He also has sensitive skin and lots of little capillaries in his cheeks, so he just blushes easily - that'll be fun when he's a teenager!... anyway, on to this years question! Just found out I am pregnant, and that my niece has Fith Disease. I was around her all last week when she was likely contagious. Have any of you had to deal with exposure to this virus when you were pregnant? Is there an immunity if you have had chicken pox?

My dd and I both got fifths disease at the same time a year & a half ago now. Didn't know what we had until she got the lacy rash on her cheeks and some of her body. Adults rarely get the rash, but I had extremely swollen joints in my fingers, knees, ankles, elbows and pretty much any other spot that remotely bends. That was a few days before she got the rash even!!! Unfortunately it IS highly contagious but only during the fever, and until the rash you don't know what it is. If you are pregnant please please see your doctor if you think you have been exposed. There is a blood test to see if you are immune and if you aren't they will keep an eye on your pregnancy. Luckily if you have ever had it you are immune and can't get it again. It isn't harmful to adults or children, just fetuses.

I'd never heard of fifth's disease until I actually got it around age 20. The older you are, the worse the sypmtoms are supposedly. And it generally goes undiagnosed until the rash shows up at which point the contagious period is pretty much over. I have read that it can cause miscarriage...just a warning to pregnant ladies. If there's an outbreak- stay away if you haven't had the virus previously.

My 5 month old has the hot, red cheeks but no body rash. He has gone beyond the incubation period for fifth's, I'd say he's had the red cheeks for over a month now. His cheeks are not always red either, but rather they will get red and hot all of a sudden. I use sensitive skin products (for bathing, washing clothes, etc) He is not cutting teeth yet, and the doctor does not think it is an allergy. Anyone have any idea what else might be going on here?
