in 2007 I had an emergency classic c-section due to me developing pre-eclampsia, he weighed 932g and was in NICU for 3 months exactly... He came home on oxygen, remained on it for 12 months and over time was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, learning difficulties, hearing problems, visual issues with turns in both eyes.... Hes 4 years old now. Doctors told me to expect him not to develope very well, that it was unlikely he would walk, talk, or do much for himself, but now, is a totally different story. He is very independant and is trying to get on his feet more and more every day.... he is so determined and is talking a little, putting sentences together, he can walk with a little help, and hes learning more and more.......every single day! My beautiful boy has come so far and I couldnt be so proud :o) xx

this is more of a vent than anything else. my son was born at 33weeks. he is now 18 months old and while i was preg with him (due to complications) was warned that he may have development/learning issues. now he has just had a well appointment with our child nurse and she is concerned about his lack of talking. now i know it is common for toddlers to not start picking up on talking until about 2yo but based on his prematurity, previous dr concerns and the obvious fact that the only 2 words he does use has no real meaning to him people are still telling me 'oh my child didnt talk til 2' or 'why is she worried? they dont start early intervention til 3yo anyway? whats the rush?' well..he has a history which makes him high risk for learning probs and isnt prevention better than trying to fix it later? there are excellent learning development programmes here that cater from children as young as 1yo from very mild delays to major delays. and why wait until it is a problem to do something about it?? people just dont understand that prems HAVE to be assessed differently to term babies. it bugs me that they compare my prem baby to their term baby cos it is so different.

I was due on 24 january 2011 and gave birth on 15 November 2011 at 30 weeks which was 10 weeks too early due to pre-eclampsia.
He only weighed 970 grams at birth. He had respitorial problems and have been in the NICU for almost 6 weeks but are doing so much better. He weighes 1.62 kg and is picking up weight on a daily basis. Yes it is not nice to see him with all those pipes but those pipes are what kept him alive and we are so gratefull for that

Hi I am not really new here as I was concerned with ventriculomegaly when I was 18 weeks pregnant, but was seen by a specialist that said everything was fine. However, at 33 weeks pregnant delivered my baby girl while in the hospital being treated for severe constipation ...which was really a ruptured appendix!! OUCH! SO while I was in the hospital for 3 weeks my baby has been in the NICU and still is. SHes gaining weight, eating better n better from the bottle only every day, she was only on cpap and jaundice light for a short time. Has needed no meds for her lungs. BUT, she still has breathing spells at almost 36 weeks gest age now. Im very concerned that they will send her home and I will not know what to do, even though they are confident that the 'spells' will not last longer than this week. Im very nervous about this..any one have any insight.....thank you!

love-a-belly, I kept a blog while I was pregnant with my last child. I was having some health problems and wrote on my blog that she would be born 1-20-08 and would be surprisingly small (much smaller that doctor had predicted.) That was a month before she was born. She was born 1-20-08 and was 2lbs 15oz. So, there is something to be said about being intouch with your baby inside.

amber- don't you mean 'how can you keep keep from progressing'? You don't want to go into labor at 33 weeks do you? Stay in bed and take it easy. Take care.

Believe me.. You don't want things to progress this early... I had a baby girl at 32 weeks 5 days 2 and a half weeks ago and she is still in the NICU... You want to keep this baby in as long as possible so you can bring them home with you. It has been the longest few weeks of my life and the hardest too, trying to balance my other child, keeping the house clean, and going to the hospital twice a day to see her. I know you are probably over being pregnant since it is hot and humid out but keep the baby in for at least a few more weeks... I am not trying to lecture or anything, just giving you my 2 cents... Good luck

Hi all... I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what the best brand of preemie diapers is?? I just had a little girl and will need preemie diapers when she comes home in a few weeks, and I am not sure what brand is the best for them

hi ladies, this may sound like a really stupid question but i was wondering... i had a dream many weeks ago now that i had my baby and she was somewhere between 3-5lbs. and my whole pregnancy i have been facinated by prem babies. now i have big babies so my bub i am carrying now 27weeks would be 3lb. the thing i would like to know is, have any of you 'predicted' your baby being prem? i realise it sounds stupid but i get 'feelings' and sometimes i just know for example i have been able to tell what my babies where before it being confirmed and other silly things. i guess i'm alittle parranoid but not too concerned now that i am this far along.

My son was born 13 weeks premature (I was 2 days before 27 weeks) and he didn't really have complications. He was on a ventilator for a while and had one infection, which is very common when a baby is in the NICU. As for hearing and eye sight, his tests all came back 100%. As per mental retardation, no signs of that as per the doctor. The doctor says that the only thing premie about him was his date of birth and weight at the time of birth. This article is telling you the worst case scenario, it's not in all cases so remember that and don't get freaked out by it.

Hey everyone!! This Saturday is the March of Dimes walk!! Please dig into your pockets (or diaper bags) and make a donation! :) A dollar or two goes alooong way!!
Every day, thousands of babies are born too soon, too small and often very sick. I'm walking in March for Babies because I want to do something about this. And I need your help.
Please support my walk. Making a secure donation is easy: just click the 'donate now' button on this page. Thank you for helping me give all babies a healthy start!
The mission of March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.
As you can see, your donation goes to an amazing cause that helps us all!! Both of babies were born prematurely and I have also lost 3 babies who were born at 18 weeks, 20 weeks and 27 weeks who were too small to make it. This walk really touches my heart, as I'm sure it does yours! Please, even if it's a dollor to two, it will help out in a big way!! And it only takes minute!!
Thank you all!!

Both my boys came early..first one was 6 weeks early at 4lbs 8 lbs, and second was 5 weeks early at 6lbs 5 oz. Both had developed great and was able to go home within a timely manner. Both had jaundice but that was treatable and really have blossomed. Both developed a bit slower but really wasn't like people will tell you.

Well Klee my daughter was not that early but she was 5 wks early..She is now 6 1/2 months..All I have heard since she was born is she wont due this or that cause she is a preemie..I wont lie and say we havent had alot of bumps along the way cause we have..She has been hospitalized twice since coming home..But I can say even her Dr is amazed how much more ahead she is even of a full term baby..she has done everything early except open her eyes..lol that took her 2 /12 wks to do..She is crawling all over gettin into everythin but her toys..lol..now she has been on a apnea machine for chokin spells and forgettin to breath..but she went from bein on it 24/7 to only at night..she is on a special formula..and if anyone is sick we have to be very careful as she gets sick VERY easy..But she is very happy and content..So I think with Dr's being more advanted with preemies now days they recover much faster then they use to..And from mother to mother what I can say from watchin my daughter fight for life to a happy into everythin baby..keep faith and hope alive and ur little one will come out ahead..No matter what the dr's told me didnt look good I kept on with she will be ok she will fight through this keep ur head up keep loving ur little AND GO with what u feel is best as the mom..if they are not givin ur baby 100% and u are not happy voice that so they know u mean biz...I wish u and ur family all the luck...

My daughter was born 5 weeks early and weighed 5 lbs. 2 oz. at birth, and was released from the hospital at 10 days old. She is now 13 months old and weighs about 19 pounds (a little on the thin side, but nothing to worry about at all). She took her first steps 3 days before she was 10 months old and is pretty advanced for her age. She says multiple words, waves while saying 'hi', plays pat-a-cake and peek-a-boo, and can point out mommy, daddy, and doggy in pictures. It just goes to show that even babies born early can catch up and even surpass other kids who were full-term. I am now 28 weeks pregnant with my second and pray he stays in there until at least 37 weeks.

I'm 34 years old, 6 foot 4 inches tall and 205 pounds. A long way from my start in life at a Naval hospital in the Mediterranean. Unfortunately, I can't find out exactly how early I was born back in 1975 but I know that I was quite premature. I was born by c-section in early January and was so ill that my mother didn't get to hold me until Valentine's Day.
When I was born I weighed 1 pound, 2 ounces (a bag of sugar and two eggs). I had a number of issues, such as under-developed lungs, and some problems with the oxygen levels I received resulted in some eye problems although, thankfully, my vision is correctable with glasses.
After a few illnesses as a growing child, I managed to beat most of the problems by outgrowing them and went on to be a very active child, playing soccer, rugby, doing cross-country running and many other sports.
Medical care has greatly improved since 1975. Children now have access to amazing advancements in technology that give them that critical edge.
Be strong, and love your child every chance you get. They'll soon be grown up and eating you out of house and home! :-)

I went to my 27 week appt yesterday.history: I had been having braxton hicks for awhile, and two weeks ago I went to the er because I had food poisoning which brought on dyhydration from throwing up,which brought on contractions that were a little too close together for comfort. they hooked me up and said i was haiving them 4 mins apart and did the fibro test to see if I was going into labor anytime soon, it was neg, and I was completly closed, they hydrated me, contractions went away, sent me home. Ok that was two weeks ago. so at my appt she checks me and tells me Im 1 cm(at 27 weeks?!) and soft (effacing?!)...instead of giving me meds, she lets me go cause on the 15 minute stress test she gave me I didnt have a contraction, the only prevenative measure she gave me was to watch the severity and timing when I do have them, and call immediatly if they hurt/are close....and instead of continuing my appts on a monthy basis she is seeing me back in a week. she said the fact that ive been closed this whole time and now im starting to dialate is cause for worry..if its cause for worry then why not put me on meds or SOMETHING?! you know? wtf! no bedrest or nothing! if I come back to her next week 3 cm then thats it isnt it?! I didnt diallate till 36 wks w my son....sorry so long ya'll! feel free to sent me a msg on my page! thanks!

Does anyone's premie have issues with weight gain? My son was born at 35 weeks weighing just under 4 lbs (IUGR). We just got back from his 9 month wellness visit and he weighed in at a measly 15 lbs. He gained less then 2 lbs in the last 3 months. His size worries me. Can anyone else share what their experience has been with slow weight gain? Reply on my page please. Thanks!

It is true that many women have full term babies in future pregnancies however, you should be considered high risk.I have had all six of my children prematurely.I was on bedrest at 19 weeks with my 6th baby.I still delivered 2 months early.I have never smoked in my life, have never done any illegal drugs, and never drank when pregnant.I knew I would deliver prematurely.I took extra ,extra good care of myself. My daughter was 3 months early and only stayed in the NICU for about 3 weeks. She is now 15 and a grade ahead. All of my children are doing well! Many premature babies go on to thrive perfectly.

every baby is different so you cant always go by what your first kid has done. my little boy was born only 10 days early and only weighed 4 lbs 7 oz and everyone thought i had him way early. he was in the nicu due to a virus for 6 weeks. but he didnt start really walking till he was like 14 months old almost. my husband was really worried. somethings come easier to some babies then others. i have a friend and her kid started walking at 10 months! so just keep your head up and he will learn. just help him out on it all as much as you can. if his dr is worried he will have you meet with other drs who can help with it all.

My youngest one was Due Dec. 31st but I had him on Nov 16th. I was 33 weeks along, he was 6lbs 2ozs. He is now 7 months old and close to 25lbs. He wont really roll over. He dont like to stand up and he hasnt tried to crawl or sit up on his own or even hold his own bottle. Its giving me a headache. My oldest son was born at 36 weeks and he was pretty much right on. I dont know what to do about my youngest. I know that preemies are slow developmently. He was in the NICU for a week and came home on thanksgiving. Anyone have any words of wisdom to help me through this. He did roll over a couple times when he was like 5 months old but since then nothing. Any help would be nice. Thanks a bunch.
