Hello all...I am new here. I am currently 17w5d pregnant with my 3rd baby who is a boy. A week ago I had an ultrasound at 16w4d and they found extra fluid in the front of the baby's brain. They didn't find anything else abnormal. I had an amnio right then which came back negative and also negative for infections. I had my OB's office test me for toxoplasmosis as I have cats and it showed I may have been recently exposed. They want me to wait 3 weeks and repeat it. I have a call in to the genetic counselors at my high risk OB's office to see if they agree with that. The ventricles measured 12-14 mm. His HC was within normal range and I will have a repeat Ultrasound on the 27th. Needless to say I am worried but I am hoping that the fluid levels decrease or at least stay where they are at. I am glad to have found these boards :)

This site continues to be such a supportive guide for me during this extremely difficult time. i have been consistantly looking at this forum to read about those of you with similar experiences in order to give me some hope for my baby. At 31.5 weeks, the lateral ventricles are now measuring 9mm and slightly over 10mm..measurements that have been consistant since my 19 week u/s. Although this is just a 'hair' over 'normal', the uncertaintly continues to cause me emotional difficulties during what should be such a joyous time. thanks to all who continue to post words of encouragement to everyone and for your personal experiences, they have done more than you will ever know!

I wouldn't trust ultrasound for anything but ventricle measurements. ACC is very common in kids with enlarged ventricles, but only MRI will give you the most clear depiction of whether it's extremely thinned from pressure or just truly missing. Either way, it's super common and is a malformation that I'd be absolutely least worried about. Supposedly some people have ACC and live their entire lives without even knowing.

Update, baby girl is now 9 months and doing greats. She is babbling, crawling, and just said her first real word. Thanks for all of your support. She had a slight enlarged vent which resolved in utero but is farsighted and wears a little pair of pink glasses. Good luck to you all!

Thanks little lamb for claryfying. Hopefully MRI shows us more.. Do they tend to show more than ultrasound can or just more detail? Ultrasound repot says Right and left lateral ventricles abnormal (fluid 14mm) but Cerebellum normal, Cisterna Magnum normal, Midline faix normal, Thalami normal, Cavum septi pelluicidi normal, posterior fossa normal and corpus collosum identified and appears normal. All sounds so double dutch. Hopefully will be clearer soon.

MumtoBoyz Agenesis Corpus Callosum means she is missing it. She could be missing it partial or complete and hers is completely not there. Your ultrasound report is stating your baby has theirs and it normal which is a good thing.

Drs from medical imaging rang and we have fetal MRI booked in for 21 June. They are requesting to have me lie feet first so as not to have my head covered in the machine. littlelamb - my ultrasound report says corpus callosum present/normal, is that different to what you are saying? im just confused by the 'complete' Hope all works out

Just had another ultrasound and Eva's ventricles are up to 20mm and 23.5mm. I am 34 weeks tomorrow and she weighs 6lbs 5oz already. She also has Agenesis Corpus Callosum complete. I am so unsure what to expect when she comes and if she is going to need to come sooner because of her size and if she will need a shunt.

Hi ladies- I had my fetal MRI yesterday, and called my genetic counselor this morning to see if the results were in, and thankfully they were and everything is NORMAL! :) :) His lateral ventricles are measuring 10mm, which is the upper limits of normal. All I can say is what a relief. The last 2 weeks have been so heart wrenching, but I honestly feel like reading the posts on this board, and some of you helped me get through it. I wish everyone the best with their pregnancies, and/or children! <3

Mumtoboyz - I went through the exact same thing with my unborn child at the 5 month scan - it's horrible to say the least, but it's important to remember that measurements are subjective and depend on the person doing the measuring - secondly ventriculomegaly can also resolve! The brain is going through rapid development between weeks 28 plus and you may find at the next scan that his measurements are lower. Good luck :)

Hi everyone. I am new to this forum after looking around. I am 27 weeks pregnant. At my 20 week scan borderline isolated Ventriculomegaly was picked up 12mm. 2 weeks later scan showed still 12mm so we were happy. After 4 week scan showed 14mm on both ventricles. Waiting on Dr to call hospital to discuss and let me know when I will have fetal MRI. Feeling very very confused and just want to talk to people who know what hubby and I are going through. We are having a little boy, our third boy! Thanks :-)

I'm sorry for re increase, jerryk. I understand how you feel. But, hindsight is 20/20. I have another friend on fb who is pregnant with twins (one with hydro) as well. Having twins is challenging enough. My BFF had twin boys in Feb 2012. But, I will assure you that things get easier once the babies arrive. All the worry fades once those sweet faces come into this world.

MRI the day before yesterday. Ventricles were 20 mm. :(. No structural cause was found.

Hi ladies, I just wanted to thank the ones that have responded I truly appreciate it. So I just got back from my level 2 ultrasound. Apparently the measurements that my dr's office got last week were a little off in everything. The baby is measuring quite large; head circumference 35 weeks, abdomen 36 weeks, and weighing approximately 5 1/2 lbs, mind you I am almost 32 weeks. As far as his ventricles, at my dr's office they measured 10mm and 11mm, today they both equally measured 12. When the doctor came in, he was very reassuring, saying that besides the enlarged ventricles, there are no other problems that he could find and feels pretty confident that this is something that will result in a positive outcome. He said approximately 90% of these cases have good outcomes. He offered the blood work for TORCH which I took, he also offered the MRI as for more of piece of mind for me and I will have it next week hopefully. I asked if the baby's head was 'normal' shaped, he said his head is very large, but not because of enlarged ventricles, but because he's a large baby! (and my husband is large, 6'4'..) So we are just taking it as that, will have a repeat ultrasound in 4 weeks. Hopefully is ventricles will stay the same or decrease a bit, and hopefully this won't affect his long term development once he makes his arrival.

Hello all - my consultant at the hospital has officially let go of me thank God, as the last scan showed a further reduction in ventricle size to 7mm. He said that a review would now take place after delivery - the 32 week scan had shown a drop to 8mm earlier - I just wanted to ask if the baby's brain continues developing massively from that point at 32 weeks into pregnancy? Is there some sort of recovery that takes place ? Sorry if these sound like silly questions! On a different note, I completely agree with the sentiments of others - had it not been for this forum I would have been left with nothing but negativity!

Lovingmummy-my 8 weeks old daughter also seems to be feeding badly as in she wont latch and comfortably feed for any amount of time.She was fine for the first few weeks.I cant see how it could be related to the VM though im thinking to get in touch with health visitor maybe they can advise.have you spoken to anyone?.But like you i also seem to connect everything to vm,even after the consultant said today that they are not concerned and will not be doing any follow up.I actually feel quite angry with how the sonographer in special fetal,ultrasound she seemed so negative when we probably didn't need to stress as much .She made it sound like it was 99% going to have some form of disability but she didnt know how severe. Dont get me wrong I am thankful to G-d that we have a gorgeous little girl but i would not like anyone else to go through the anguish we went through unnecessarily. Had it not been for site like this i really think i would have gone around the bend!

Jsousa- I was in a similar situation. My son was diagnosed at 33 weeks with mild vm (10-11mm) I had torch testing, and amino which were all clear. Cut a long story short, my son is now 17 months old and developing normally. His ventriculomegaly was measured at birth to be 12.6mm, I suspect it was around that figure all along as the US in utero can be really off with measurements. Sometimes late term ventricle dilation can be due to some kind of brain bleed, but as in my sons case that is not always true. Best wishes to you and your baby, I'm sure everything will turn out fine.

Lovingmommy- could be reflux? My son suffered with severe reflux and was prescribed omeprazole which thankfully helped loads. I doubt it was anything to do with the VM

Hi, did anyone have any breastfeeding issues with the ventriculomegaly? I am breastfeeding my 3 week old daughter who has borderline vm of 10-11mm and she keeps pulling away while feeding. I thought it was a cold first then a burp but even after all that she still about fives minutes in the fussiest way mostly pulling away and crying loudly too. Am always relating things to the vm!

jsousa3-we were in a similar situation to yourself a few months ago.I went for a 30th week scan also to be told our daughter had unilateral ventricle measuring 13mm.Like yourself we absolutely freaked out and i spent the next few days(and nights!)googling any info i could find as hospital seemed so vague as to what outcome would be(We opted out of mri and just did the torch test which came back clear).Fast forward 6 months and our gorgeous baby girl is 2 months old and the light of our lives.We had a scan after she was born and her ventricle size was unchanged and we are to have a meeting with the consultant on Tuesday to see what if any further action will be taken.AS of now there seems to be nothing untoward and of course i will not completely rest my mind until she is 18! but for now we are enjoying all her smiles and the blessing of having her.I can only tell you to stay positive and generally the hospitals put the worst slant on things maybe because they have to cover themselves.Wishing you all the best for an easy pregnancy, peace of mind and healthy baby.

jsaousa3- from what your babys ventricles are measuring and he fact that there are no other abnormalities id guess that theres nothing to worry about. i know that when the doctors give you so many possible reasons for a slighlty off measurement then you automatically click into panic mode. please dont worry take it from me- whose babys ventricles have gone to 21mm - hopefully theres nothing wrong. i hope it all goes well in all your other appointments .

I am so glad to have come across this forum. I had three ultrasounds so far; one in the beginning to determine gestational age, one at 21 weeks (anatomy scan) and my most recent scan at 31 weeks (which was yesterday). The first two ultrasounds have been completely uneventful, everything looked good, no complications noted. I had the test done for downs syndrome which resulted in a 1:50,000 chance for it, and my test for spina bifida came back normal. Then I go in for a routine appointment yesterday, during the ultrasound everything seemed great until the doctor told me the baby had fluid on his brain. From what she told me, he has a slightly increased amount of fluid in his cerebral ventricle, measuring 11mm. She told me it could be caused from a maternal infection, some sort of blockage, a congenital defect, or it could simply be a human error, or a problem that will resolve on its own. The baby's head was measuring in the 80th percentile, but it wasn't too far off from his weight. The doctor also told me that 1 out of 2 of the views of his head were normal, therefore maybe the abnormal or large view could simply be from the position the baby was in. To be cautious, she has ordered for me to get a level 2 ultrasound done which is scheduled for Wednesday. I am trying not to freak out, but it is very hard not to as I'm sure you all know. I asked her what the worse case scenario would be, and she said a blockage that would require a shunt. I am just wondering if it was a blockage problem, wouldn't you think the fluid would be a lot more than 11mm? Sorry for a long post, I am just looking for a few words of encouragement or advice. I have read many stories on here which has put my mind to ease a bit. I appreciate any insight.

Hi jerryk, I'm sorry for the diagnosis of your twin. There is still a chance that things will be okay. You will have to wait for the next scan. Sometimes things stabilize or the vents decrease. It doesn't happen all the time, but it does happen. In the mean time, I encourage you to go to www.fetalhydrocephalus.com. We learned a lot about the condition there. Littlelamb, ACC is very common with Hydro children. There are many times the parents won't even know about the ACC at all because there are no delays. I know there are people you have encountered with ACC that don't even know it. There is a range of outcome with ACC, but most children have mild delay or none at all. Some are more affected, but the majority are fine. It sounds scarier than if is.
