Hi Ladies, i havent been on here for a while but i am wondering if any one has advice for me, i know if i can get it any where it will be here as it was the ppl on this forum who got me through my last pregnancy. my son had vm until 38wks measuring 15mm all was bk to normal on delivery. what i am wanting to know is how likely it is for the baby im carrying now to also have vm im 16wks.

pothi - 319 days ago.
Thank you partyof5now (Sonya)!!! Now it slightly above 10mm, we have u/s again in 2 weeks. We do not know if this was high earlier and is coming down or it’s just a spike (10 day period) This is very stressful

LDMusgrave - 320 days ago.
If anyone needs to talk to a mom who has recently been through this situation, please don't hesitate to contact me on Facebook as Lindsey Dewar Musgrave. My daughter's ventricles measured about 10 cm across at birth. She's 4 months old and she's doing well.

up north - 320 days ago.
Eyebaby- pls know that everything you feel is completly normal. Most people start freaking out when there is not long to go but we all have that 10 fold as so much about out LOs are unknown. HANG IN THERE, just stay busy see other people. I couldnt stand to be around people near the ens cause I was so tense about what would be but when I was forced to it was great because one is forced not to think about the baby for an hour of two. Whatever you are given you are strong enough to handle it. 100%. All you have to do is handle your nerves for these last few days.xxx

laila10 - 321 days ago.
eyebaby, please be strong only think in a positive way, the positive thoughts will help your baby a lot, specially in these few days you are waiting for her. Trust God and try not to think about the worst things coz sometimes if you think negatively, it can happen. you will have a precious baby and you will let us know lot of great stories about her. Good luck

laila10 - 321 days ago.
thanks Sonya and thinkpink20101 for this information. My LO is doing good thanks God, the only two things that she had and may be related to VM, as docts reported, she had neumonia at birht, and she was admitted to NICU for many days. the second thing is that till now she is tiny and gaining very low weight. In few days she will be, God wiling, 6 mo but till now she is not pronouncing any consonant, only screming a lot. My ped. told my that it is not related to any delay, some babies take time to say their first letters. her ventricles were 12 and 13 at 32 weeks and increased to 15, 16 mm 37 weeks, and till now she is having the same measurements. I´m praying every day for her and all babies of her condition.

eyebaby - 321 days ago.
hey ladies, today my negative feeling came back and hit me. i'm worried that my baby would be born and admitted to NICU straight away. I am about 10 days to see my LO. Please tell me what to do.

partyof5now (Sonya) - 322 days ago.
laila10 - Hi =) I cant recall your LO's vents measurements. Yay, to your LO being 6mo old now...how is she doing? Any signs thus far of milestone delays? I hope all is going great. Our neurologist saw my son Kaden at 1day old to read his CT Scan then we saw him again when Kaden turned 8mo old for a required follow up...we opted not to have a follow up MRI on K because of the thought of putting him under, needles, IV's & such just to have it done made our stomaches flip flop...We figured Kaden was doing so awesome hitting all his milestones, not showing any delays & walking already that it was a good sign to us...our neurologist took one look at him trucking around his office at 8mo old & agreed. He did measure his head & do a couple tests to see how or how quickly Kaden responded then told us that we had no need to continue seeing him again in the future...unless of course something poped up out of the blue. He didnt say K would have any learning delays later on in school & such tho...guess that is a hard thing to judge, normal children never diagnosed with VM in utero can have learning delays pop up in early school days too for other reasons so who knows. I figure if K starts to need a extra boost in school to help him learn things due to delays arising then we will hit that road when we get to it but so far his VM diagnosis hasnt stopped or delayed him a bit. K's left rear lateral vent was the only one of his vents enlarged & at first diagnosis at 28/29 weeks it was just above 14mm & by 35 weeks just slightly above 10mm & at 1 day old still just slightly above normal....its just who he is. I would say now that she is here just love the blessing that she is, teach her how do do things along the way as you normally would & enjoy this young time with her because it goes by so fast...if delays pop up years later down the road then worry about them then & do all you can to help her thru them then but till that ever happens & it may not ever happen just try to love her & enjoy her...all babies are such blessings! Congrats on your little girl =D

thinkpink2010 - 322 days ago.
laila- my son's ped. neuro. said that we would be seeing some signs of tightness or lack of use between 3-6 months. However, my son is 8 months and will go to the ped. neuro every 6 months for the next few years. So far my LO is doing wonderfully, no signs of any problems. I am not sure we can EVER say we have a 'free and clear.' As things like learning disabilities and seizures could come up at anytime! I have just taking to being positive and telling myself I will educate about it, but I am NOT going to worry about it unless I have to!

laila10 - 322 days ago.
HI ladies!! hope you all fine!!! If someone has ana answer to this question pls tell me. Till what age a baby with VM should be checked to see her neurological development. Some docts say that the outcomes can´t be seen till 6-9 years, others say till 3 years and some say till one year is enough!! I´m confused, just if someone had an experience with this problem. my baby girl is 6 month and docts are saying that it is early to tell the posible outcomes of her VM. I ´m positive and praying that it will be nothing at all, but just want to konw till what age I can say that no more checks? Special greetings to Turtulemom and Sonya, I alwyas remeber their great support to me when I was pregnant. thanks

pothi - they found my sons left vent to be enlarged to 14+mm at 28-29weeks as well as told brain loss in that area as well which to me is a pretty late catch in my opinion as well...I was left wondering if it had been like this the whole time & they just didnt see it previously or if it just happened over a few weeks span of time.? How did they not catch this before was my continual question...of course there were no answers they could give me as to when, why & how...nor could they tell me how my son would be...my sons vent enlargement was a isolated thing, he will be 17mo in 3 days & is 100% healthy as far as we can see & such a blassing & we have yet to be told a reason for the enlarged vent other than he may have inherited from myself or his daddy & its just the way he was made. What is your sons vent measuring at right now? When first noticed at my routine 28-29 week U/S my sons left vent measured 14+mm & then slowly decrease week by week down to just above 10mm at 35weeks which is just a smigde above normal range & showed no brainloss so at that time we stopped checking because it was so stressful & prayed for the best. At 1 day old CT scan showed vent slightly enlarged still & no reason for it & reconfirmed absolutely no brainloss like we were told at 28/29 weeks. I do believe there is time for your LO's vent to decrease before his birth, babys brains change daily & are miracles.

pothi - 323 days ago.
32 weeks ultrasound revealed that left ventricle is enlarged. In most cases these kind of problems are found around week 20. But mine is 32 weeks, not sure if doc missed to catch this earlier or this is new development. Do we have enough time for getting ventricle in normal range? Is there anything I can do to help my baby? Ladies please help me, I am going crazy

samismum - my amnio results took 14days

turtlemom - 323 days ago.
If memory serves, we had some amnio results back in a couple of days and others on a couple of weeks. We are in the US if that matters.

EmelC - 324 days ago.
samismum I hope there is nothing wrong with your boy. I had an amnio. In my country it takes about 3 or 4 weeks to get the results.

samismum - 324 days ago.
I've got an amnio tomorrow. I'm really nervous. They just want to rule out any chromosonal defects. Does anyone know how long it takes for the results to come back?

laila10 - 326 days ago.
i ladies!! for all moms of new born babies with VM and all those who are about to deliver. My best advice for u is to breastfeed your baby at least for the first year oh her life, whatever it costs you to do that, and even you have to go back to work. The DHA and ARA in breast milk are unique and not like any other formula. You can find lots of formula saying nearest one to mother´s milk with high amount of DHA and ARA, but it´s not true. DHA found in mother´s milk is required for best development of baby´s brain. I didn´t had like with the breastmilk, it dried two weeks after having my baby. I consulted many docts and they all confirmed that in cases of VM it is highly recommended to breastfeed the baby. Do YOu know what to doooo. GOOd luck

LDMusgrave - 327 days ago.
Mommybythesea, welcome to this board. My daughter's ventricles were severely dilated by the time she was born. It was already pretty severe right off the bat when they found the problem at our 20 wk ultrasound. She's now almost 4 months old and doing well. This is the first place I found when I came home with the diagnosis, too! If there is any advice I can offer to you right now, it is to believe in your baby!!

mommabythesea - 327 days ago.
also, a question... i've been reading things here and there about dha helping with this condition?? and if so, what amounts? i took dha during my last pregnancy but this time around the doctor hasn't mentioned it. i just picked up a bottle today, it's 200mg. they had a 450 version as well but dh didn't want me to get the higher dose until i talked to my doctor about it. the 200mg was recommended for pregnant women.

mommabythesea - 327 days ago.
hi ladies, just wanted to introduce myself to the board.. i'm sure you will be hearing from me a lot here in the near future. we just found out that our 20 week u/s revealed 'enlarged lateral ventricle'... i'm not sure if it's both sides, or how bad the enlargement is. the nurse couldn't/wouldn't tell me anything else except that we're being referred to a specialist.... i'm trying to stay positive and hope for the best, but it's hard since we don't know how bad the condition is or if there is anything else wrong. anyway, i'm glad to have found this board, it's nice to have someone to talk to who is going through the same thing.

turtlemom - 327 days ago.
Samismum- I don't have a lot of time right now but click on my name and go through our story. I would have given anything for vent measurements as small as yours! By our 27 week scan they weren't able to measure them anymore bc my daughters head was completely filled with fluid. She is now a normal 2 1/1 year old that happens to be missing 1/3 of her brain. Don't abort a perfectly healthy baby bc that is what you would probably be doing. Your doctors are ignorant. 15 mm at 29 weeks is mild and has a wonderful prognosis.

up north - 327 days ago.
sorry i keep getting another minute to write...I found that in the uk abortion was pushed very heavily even up to the week before I was due!

up north - 327 days ago.
Just to mention by 34 weeks the vents stopped growing and remained stable till birth. I have heard this happen to others too

up north - 327 days ago.
hey all Sorry eyebaby i just saw your message now. I am having a very mad 2 weeks with family staying for a visit and a sickness virus bouncing between my kids. Anyway.. My boy's vents were/are 14mm and 15mm. HE IS FINE (so far) i dont know what more to say. He is 18 months and does everything he is suppose to...Look at my posts, Bailey's posts, linnyc posts.. all vents around this size all babies doing good.xxx

samismum - 327 days ago.
another question, can ventricles that have been enlarging so far stop and start to reduce? My boys vents went from 10.6 and 11.4 at 24 weeks to 15 and 16 by week 29. Does anyone know of any cases like mine and then the vents have stopped growing and reduced? Laila, when I talked about a six month delay, I meant for example a baby normally walks and talks by 12 months and some children with enlarged vents walk and talk at 18 months instead.
