hi ladies. i had an appt this afternoon..im 31 weeks and my bp was alot more elivated than normal..usually im between 100-122/60-80...today i was 141/80 i gained 4 lbs since last week, and my ankles are pretty swollen. there was 'little' traces of protein in my urine as well. i go back on friday for anther test of both, i guess preeclampsia isnt diagnosed off first tests..but i wanted your guys opinions who have actually been diagnosed if it sounds like i might have it. im hoping my bp was just elevated due to being nervous and the protein might be a uti or something. i am not getting headaches or nausia or anything. but my heart races, i get hot flashes, and dizzyness, as well as the other symptoms..advice?

julz, I am sorry for what you are experiencing right now. I wish the Drs (especially yours) would know how to help us people with this kind of case during pregnancy... I'll pray that you'll have a controlled bp, a happy you and a healthy babe.

I am a pretty healthy eater, but I always land up getting preeclampsia or close to it, I stay away from salts and drink loads of water and eat fruits & veggies, but it still happens to me, this pregnancy my BP started to creep up at 19 weeks, they sent me for bloodwork and a 24 hr urine. I wish there was a way for me to prevent or stop this from happening, it is very stressful especially towards the end, when you have tests, constant hospital visits and you worry that your baby is not safe inside of you. I will just hope and pray and keep up with my current diet. Good luck to everyone!!!

julz, nope my doctor did not have the chance to say anything regarding the cause of my preeclampsia, every monthly check-up my bp was ok except in the 7th month and I came up with that conclusion because it waswithin christmas season when my bp went high and my eating wasn't REALLY, really healthy then, though I believe that a pregnancy induced hypertension is a possiblity/a factor in my maybe having it cause my mother had it, but it aggrevated things due to what I ate. My sis-in-law prevented having preeclampsia in her second pregnancy because of healthy eating...I don't know but it is what I will do plus other things the Dr will recommend if I get pregnant the second time around...

lourds~did your doctor tell you that's what it was from?? I have pregnancy induced hypertension and preclampsia, I eat well when pregnant, my doc never told me to change my diet or anything. I'm just curious as I have never heard a link between unhealthy eating during pregnancy and preeclampsia.

Nessa29, what do you think was the cause of your preeclampsia before? Mine was due to eating fatty, salty foods, in short unhealthy eating really... I am praying for another baby but kind of nervous/afraid, I might have it again in case, but now I know (a little with a LOT of prayers) how to lessen if not erase the probability of having it the next time. I pray that you'll have a healthy and happy pregnancy...

lourds-thanks for the good wishes and advice. I have pretty much been doing all of that. I don't even give into my cravings...it sucks but I figure I would rather have a healthy pregnancy then satisfy a craving that will make me happy for a short time.

Bonkers, don't forget your water, minimize or no animal fats, and measure everything you eat (I know it is difficult specially if it is what you crave for), and rest, you can do it...Wishing you good bp always!

bonkers.......my advice is to make sure you get to your appoinments really early, so as not to stress yourself out by rushing around to get there on time, take a book with you, get there a god 45 minutes before and make sure your as chilled as you possibly can be before they retake your blood pressure!!!!

This is my first pregnancy and I have high blood pressure at 11 weeks. I have never had high blood pressure before. My doctor did the 24 hour urine test and all other tests but haven't heard back from them about the results. Just wondering if any of you have had high blood pressure this early. I strongly feel like a lot of it is coming from having miscarried in November and having to wait so long to find out the health of this new little one as well as getting through each day until I am considered out of the woods. Also, with my MS the only thing that sounded good was salty things (of course). My mom also had high blood pressure when she was preggo. I go MOnday to have it rechecked....any suggestions for me except to reduce salt intake which i have been doing? I really want to avoid meds if at all possible.

I had my first daughter due to severe preeclampsia at 27 weeks. I went in the hospital at 22 weeks and they kept me on and off magnesium sulfate...which is horrible! So with this pregnancy, I am almost 26 weeks and my bp is going up and so is the protein in my urine :( The bottom number of my bp is in the 80's to 90's....so I have kinda put myself on bedrest because I have more doc appointments on Monday and I don't want them to keep me in the hospital!

Thanks lin! My bp has been all over the place. High side, it spikes to 156/98 and low side (if I am laying on my left side for 5 hours straight without getting up) it is 117/65. Normally if I am laying in bed at an incline taking normal bathroom breaks it is 145/85. Blood work looked good yesterday, so it seems to be staying at just PIH. Possible induction early this week.

My pregnancy induced high blood pressure never resulted in Pre eclampsia. I was just like you, as long as I was resting or sitting it was normal, but as soon as i swept the floor of walked up the stairs it was high. Just put yourself on bed rest if you can, to avoid meds, limit your salt intake and eat lots of banana's!! They help reduce bp. Don't stress over your bp readings, or they will just read hig

NEED HELP!! Ok, so I had blood pressure issues with my daughter toward the end. They labeled me PIH and had me on magnesium at the end of delivery. But after delivery my blood pressure returned to perfect. Well this pregnancy my blood pressure was high in the first trimester 150-160s/something then low in the second trimester, then higher again in the third trimester. My blood pressure was steadily climbing so he told me to get off work and take it easy after he hospitalized me to run tests for preeclampsia. I had also been experiencing visual disturbances, and frequent bad headaches, and occasional protein in urine, although none in my 24 hour test. All the test came back negative, and resting in the hospital took the bp back down to 115/65 or so. So... I basically put myself on partial bed rest. Blood pressure has fluctuated some, but mostly has been 120-130s/75 when I stay off my feet. Today I took my blood pressure and it was 113/65, I ran out and got a few items from the store and then laid back down. After 4 hours of laying down, I took my blood pressure and it was 144/91. I haven't had a headache, but have been seeing floaters again today. Does this sound like it is headed toward preeclampsia, or is it just PIH that has been pretty well controlled until I over did it today?

has anyone had preeclampsia with their first pregnancy and didn't get it in the second pregnancy?

Juli 140/90 is the highest they like to see it. I also had bp issues during two pregnancies. I also have white coat syndrome very bad! Its a great idea to track your readings at home and show your doctor so they dont put you on meds if you dont need them. The bottom number is the most important, you had one reading at home where it was 96, thats high. you don't want it over 90. But if it is, relax for a bit and take it again. Bp is so emotional, so try not to stress over it, or it will no doubt be high.

I was on mag sulfate after an emergecy section, it never bothered me - maybe because they had me on so much. (for more info see my birth story)

I am 14 weeks pregnant and Iwent for my check-up and my blood pressure was high. The nurse was not concerned because she said I have no other symptoms. My DR still had me due the 24 hour urine test and get blood drawn. I am waiting for results. When I was at the DR's my BP was 140/90. I started taking it at home and it has been perfectly fine running 113/72, 106/70, 120/96. So, I am thinking it is white coat syndrome. I am more nervous this pregnancy and it is my second. We will see!

i wish there were more ppl writing in this forum. i am 34 weeks pregnant and have chronic elevated BP. it was normal only during the middle of my pregnancy, was high before, and is now the highest it's ever been. i even check it at wal mart when i go just to make sure i don't have 'white jakcet syndrome,' which is when your BP reads high in hospitals due to nervousness. i feel completely normal everytime it's taken, so i know it's accurate. for a couple weeks it's been measuring 160/100 or just slightly below. i have done the 24 hour urine collection twice now to check for protein and have been in the normal range. i am just so confused as to what i should expect. i asked my doctor 'as long as there is no protein, there is nothing to worry about, right?' and he just says 'it's of interest.' yes, i understand they will continue to monitor it, but i need to know if it continues to raise or stay in stage 2 hypertension, will i be induced? or do they only induce if you have protein? i do occasionally see stars in my vision, and the last few days i have been vomiting and getting headaches. i also have bronchitis right now, so i dont know if the nausea is just a result of dehydration. i cannot find any information on the internet that gives me more answers about high BP during pregnancy that ISN'T with protein. well, i am off to the doctor again tomorrow, so i am hoping for some answers.

Kristen - wow! I didn't have that problem. I hardly noticed it... other than feeling some hot flashes, which was kind of welcome since the hospital was soooo cold. Then again, they also gave me a sleeping pill to help me dose off. I was VERY bad though, so maybe it depends on the severity?

Not to scare you ladies but the mag sulfate is really bad. Just prepare. I was so sick and so hot and miserable. I had my abby at 10 am and at 230 am that night i started ripping ivs and monitors off and the leg cuffs and the nurse came in and I told her I was leaving and she wasnt going to stop me... i was insane! (as i was laying on a puppy pad bleeding my insides out) SHe called the doctor and took me off of the stuff and withing a few hours i was back to normal... needless to say i didnt make it out of the room!
