I had a placental abruption whe I was over due with my daughter. I actually wasn't even aware of it until after the tst were done on my placenta. I was in labor for 48 hours and when they finally decided to break my water it was all blood. There was no amniotic fluid left, all blood. I was rushed in for an emergency C Section immediately. My daughter was in the NICU for two and a half weeks, but we both SURVIVED! She is now an amazing 2 and a half year old.. I am currently 29 weeks pregnant with my second and of course scared it will happen again, but my dr. is very much on top of it. They are doing my section early because he thinks my going late last time might have had something to do with the abruption. Hoping for the best this time arund!

95% of pregnancies cannot continue after an abruption. I had a terrrible abruption at week 20.5 yet I went full term 37.5 weeks and delivered a perfect baby boy. Large portions of the placenta were dead yet it delivered and functioned to care for my baby. My body had formed numerous membranes that seemed to function as a support system to the placenta. It was amazing. I was crying so much at the delivery and the nurse wondered what was wrong...I was so happy and felt so lucky--my son recieved an APGAR of 9-9. Better than my other two children. I don't know why things happen to us but I feel that there must be a reason for all things like this. I know 3 wonderful women, better than myself, that lost full term babies in the past few months :( Maybe there babies were too good for this world. i don't presume to know why this happened. I am so sorry for all of your losses and want to tell you it is not your fault. Hugs to you and no matter what happens there is hope.

One year ago today I gave birth to my perfect baby girl. This was after a partial placental abruption at 26 weeks. If you find yourself on this board know there is hope. She is either ahead or right on track with ever milestone and has never given us any indication that the abruption harmed her.

There is a correlation. Most of the time it doesn't mean you will end up with an abruption though. It is more likely if you are diagnosed end of first or begining of second trimester. (as was the case for me) I think it has to do with the developement/attachment of the placenta.

I had a subchorionic Hemorrhage last week. I am currently 11 weks PG and still have some discharge. Is there any relation between a SCH and placenta abruption? Am I at higher risk now?

I am hoping we make it a few more weeks. Like Jeni at 21 weeks I had 3 big bleeds in 4 days then a few more moderate bleeds now spotting off and on. I had a subchorionic hematoma in early second trimester that actually cleared up. So I thought I was safe. Anyway, that wasn't the case. I am hoping that my son can make it alright and hopefully with no lifelong problems. I just can't believe we are a statistic. I guess that's just life. I'm so greatful my son looks so good and he is still growing!!! I am so blessed. Jeni we'll have to make it through this! We just have to make it a few more weeks, right?! I am so sorry for all of you that have lost your precious angel. I don't understand why things happen. I'm glad you made it. Hugs.

I am 21 weeks pregnant.. and had bleeding a few days ago. Apparently I have a slight placental abruption which we are hoping will heal. My blood pressure is questionable...on the high end. I am still leaking some old blood and pray that my little one makes it.

I had a pregnancy with 41 1/2 weeks.. a big son healthy and happy. Then, 7 years later, I became pregnant with my daughter. She was always very active in uterine. Kicking and hiccups very very frequently. One day at 36 weeks and 4 days... I realized she hadn't really kicked for a couple hours. I told the hubby he then made me call the doctor. Never got a call back,,, started feeling light but very frequent contractions... hubby made me go to the hospital, felt kinda silly but thought better safe than sorry. Got to the hospital, contractions were very inconsistent timing at that point.. every 6mts then every 22mts. Nurse did a stress test. daughter was fine. they did want her heart rate to go up then down a little more. they gave me an IV of glucose. Performed and exam to see if I was dialated. about 10 mts after, felt like I had to pee, hubby helped me to the bathroom,,, as I stood up to wipe, his face went white and pointed and said ' ah babe, you are bleeding,, ALOT'.. Didn't even worry, thought it was 'bloody show' kinda got excited that we may go into labor. Well the bleeding got worse as did the contractions. My uterus got tender, the nurse and idiot on call doc wouldn't tell me where or why I was bleeding, told me that my unbareable contractions I know I was feeling weren't that severe.(later realized, they placed the contraction monitors low on top my belly where typical contractions start on uterus, not up high where placental abruption ones start) Doc peformed ultrasound, said it didn't look like much bleeding but couldn't really make out much on the screen..lol At this point they had me ly directly on a bed pan because the bleeding was so much. Finally after arriving at 9pm the previous night, my doc rolls in at 7am, see's that I have had severe and continous contractions, decides 10mts later by phone from the nurses station to my room that he was gonna perform an emergency c-section and I was indeed experiencing placental abruption. They wheeled me in, we recorded the surgery on video and it was BLOODY!. He delivered my beautiful baby girl 6lbs 6oz.. They told us to sstop recording, she had ingested so much blood, she couldn't breathe, they intabated her, I never heard her cry..They immeadiatly whisked her away kicking hubby out even. She was full of so much of my blood, her first stool wasn't meconium, it was pure blood.. they had to place and IV into her imbulicle cord all the way up to her heart, so therefore we were unable to hold her for the 1st 48hrs. she wasn't allowed to eat, she would cry for 2 whole days out of hunger :( But, by day 3, she was allowed out of NICU and I swear... right in my room in a basinet :) we left the hospital and she was perfect.. Then for shock factor... her and I were in a severe car accident on my actual due date which amazingly also fell on fathers day 2008.. so I could look st our unexpected event in so many different ways.. My doctor even says that it was a great thing I was not pregnant in my accident, that the trauma would have been severe for her! She is now 2yrs old and her doc says she is 3-6 mths advanced developmentally.. so smart and height, weight are always 85-95 percentile. So, like everyone else, I do want another baby, very bad. I am scared and I do really wish that out of all of these ladies that unfortunately experienced this tragic complication, would come back and update they forum comments. This complication happens in every 1% of pregnancies, each of our babies have a 20-40% chance of dying. we have a 10% chance of a reaccuring placental abruption in future pregnancies. All of this tells me, that it happens, it's tragic and can indeed happen again. IF ANYONE HAS ANY BIT OF HOPE OR WARNING, WE ALL WOULD APPRECIATE IT! So sorry for everyones devastating losses. I cry everytime I hear of a story that started like mine, but sadly didn't end like mine did. God bless your angels!

8 months ago my daughter was delivered via emergency c-section. At 35 weeks my water broke and it was clear but I had no contractions. Had a shower and drove to the hospital. When we arrived, I started bleeding, so heavily that even though I was wearing a pad, my pants were soaked and I was dripping blood on the floor. Although I was panicking, the midwife kept telling me that it was completely normal and left me laying on a bed for over an hour. My husband demanded she get a Dr to see me and after one look, I was raced to theatre. They were in such a hurry to get my baby out that they cut me vertically and horizontally and I cant carry anymore children. They also cut my daughters head when they were cutting into me. It took them a while to get my daughter breathing and I lost over a litre of blood. I thank god that we both made it that day!

I had an abruption at 14 weeks. I am currently 18 weeks, and I am still bleeding out old blood. Baby is fine, but I cannot work for fear it will happen again, but worse. Now the baby is at risk for ingesting the blood that got into the amniotic fluid from the bleed. This pregnancy is very stressful ! Anybody have any advice on abruptions?

Two months ago I had a placenta abruption at 41 weeks. I had a perfect pregnancy with no complications until that last night. I had an emerg c-section after I started bleeding and loosing clumps of blood. My baby girl was out within an hour of the symptoms but had bled out. The Drs. did a transfusion but the damage had already been done. She survived for 2 and a half days and then passed away.

I was diagnosed with placenta abruption when I was 12 weeks pregnant. I was told I needed to rest and not work for two weeks. It was juast spotting bright red blood first the I ended up in the ER because I was gushing blood. I spent 4 days in hospital with complete bed rest, IV attached & bathroom privlidges with nurse assistance. The doctor released me with strick bedrest for the remainder of my two weeks and told my the abruption should heal on its own by week 14. I am currently on my 15th week with no bleeding since.
I have been eating healthy and resting when I can. I am back to work and haven't had any issues yet(knock on wood I don't either).
I had never heard of this before and I have already had two previous pregnancies that went perfectly fine. Hopefully everything works out fine. To all of you women who experience the same thing and are terrified, don't let it stress you out (that doesn't help the situation), get lots and lots of rest and eat healthy. Cheers!

Hi. I am 23 weeks pregnant and have noticed a tender patch on my upper abdomen - just to the left of my tummy button. It had been there for about a week. I noticed it when I was rubbing my tummy - it does not feel tender unless I put pressure there. Now I looked on line and am worried as I heard this can be a sign of placental abruption. I do not have any bleeding and do not have high BP. Can anyone help? I am away from home and will not get to see my midwife or doctor for 3 weeks. Thanks!

Towards the end of my first pregnancy,(35 weeks) I felt a burning with some mild contractions. It was confirmed about 2 days later that I indeed had contractions. They put me on Tirbulalane and told me to rest. 4 days later I had a placenta abruption. Thankfully my little girl was born at 36 weeks 4lbs 4oz (healthy)with an apgar score of 9. My placenta was analyzed with inconclusive results, however I was diagnosed with MTHFR 6 months later. I am now taking high dosages of folic acid. I also noticed that I did not make a lot of breast milk. Has this happened to anyone? I am trying to conceive again,

Hi. With my first pregnancy I was diagnosed with a complete previa at 14 weeks. I started bleeding (huge gush) at 28 weeks. After several days in the hospital (and baby was fine) I was sent home for complete bed rest. Continued having various gushing blood episodes between 28-32 weeks and was in and out of the hospital 4 different times. Finally the day I hit 33 weeks I had the worst gush yet and my dr. said it was time to deliver. My son was born at 4 lb 10 oz and had a rough start, but is a healthy one year old today and I feel truely blessed! My hubby and I would like to have another child, but I'm terrified of another previa and abruption. Has anyone else gone on to have more children after an abruption? If so, was everything ok in your future pregnancies? Thanks for any info!

Hi. I have a 20 month old daughter, she was delivered by emergency c-section at 32 weeks after i started bleeding in the middle of the night. i had placenta previa and was also stressed out at the time, i think that worsened things. i was in hospital for a week and the ongoing monitoring wasnt reassuring to my doctor who felt it was best to get her out - she was in NICU and had so many feeding problems later on, not to mention reaching most of her milestones late. its only started getting bearable when she started walking at 15 months, and she's a joy, a bright and beautiful star in my life. i'd like to have another, but i'm so so scared of going thru all of this again, or putting a baby thru this.... i dont want the stress of thinking of this during pregnancy as i know that stress made things worse for me the last time. no matter what dont stress during pregnancy, hormones are very very delicate at this stage and any imbalance is perceived as a threat (Including foetus).

I had placntal abruption at 39 weeks. I thought my water broke, but when I went to the bathroom I was bleeding. My husband took my to the hospital right away and the doctors werent' sure what the bleeding was from, but luckily the Dr. recommended they do a C-section and so a little over an hour after the dr. first looked at me, my son was born. During the c-section they discovered that i had had a placental abruption. My son swallowed blood and had to have his stomach pumped and was on oxygen and an IV for 2 days. But luckily, after that he was fine. But had they not done the c-section so quickly, things may have been worse. It's b een a year and I am thinking about baby#2 but am worried that it may happen again. (and maybe not have a happy ending) Anyone have an abruption and then have more babies without any complications?

I had placenta abruption but I was diagnosed too late. I did not show any signs of abruption. I was 35 weeks and my water broke so I thought I was going to deliver. I found out when I got to the hospital she had detached two days ealier. It was horrible and I don't want to scare anyone but please, please take all precaution if you are showing signs. Has anyone had placenta abruption and then it happened to them again with the next pregnancy? I'm really scared this is going to happen to me again since it happened with my first pregnancy.
