Are there additional risks ro being overweight during pregnancy?

Plus Size And Pregnant
In the United States, 3 our of every 10 women are considered obese. You are considered obese if your BMI is 30 or higher. Half of all pregnant women are considred overweight. While there are additional risks associated with being obese during pregnancy, most women will continue to have successful pregnancies. While doctors like to raise awareness about being overweight and pregnant, it is not to make the mother feel bad. The information is simply available as an extra means of education for what could potentially occur.

There are risks involved with being overweight during pregnancy. Not only can the extra weight make you feel sluggish and exhausted, your physical health and the health of your developing baby is at risk. Overweight women have increased risks of devoping hypertension and gestational diabetes. The risk of suffering a miscarriage or stillbirth is also increased if you are overweight. Because gestational diabetes carries the potential for a very large baby, overweight mothers are more likely to require a cesarean section to deliver their baby. Preeclampisa and hypertension raises the risk of a stroke, which also can cause a woman to have to deliver her baby via cesarean section. Performing a cesarean section on an overweight woman is also harder because of the additional layers of fat that have to be cut through.

Just as slender mothers and "average size" mothers will need maternity clothing, plus-size mothers will also need maternity clothes during their pregnancy. There are many stores that offer plus size maternity clothing for pregnant mothers. One of the easiest types of shirts to purchase is an empire waisted style that will allow you to show off your belly and stay comfortable as your pregnant belly grows. Often times, baggy t-shirts or stretch pants can be just as comfortable as maternity clothing. You do not have to spend a fortune to be comfortable during your pregnancy. Have a certified bra fitter measure you and fit you for a good fitting bra during your pregnancy. Check out online stores for additional options for larger maternity clothes if a particular store does not offer your size.

You can not diet during pregnancy. For the safety and well-being of your developing baby, losing weight during pregnancy is not recommended. Some women will lose some weight during the first trimester because of morning sickness and vomiting. However, you can watch what you eat and exercise to remain healthy throughout the nine months. Consume enough of the right calories, rather than eating high fat and calorie foods. Refrain from consuming foods and drinks that are high in sugar. Make sure that you are drinking plenty of water and exercise moderately daily. Health care providers recommend that an overweight woman gain approximately 15-25 pounds during her pregnancy.

Rather than focusing on the negative effects that being overweight and pregnany pose, try to focus on the positive. By eating the right foods, exercising and taking care of your body, you can continue with your pregnancy knowing that your actions are positively effecting your baby.

Hello Ladies, I was wondering if someone has been through these type of problems in their pregnancy. I am 35 and a 1rst time mother (Ihave 2 adopted children) I am 15 weeks and I am afraid of losing this baby. I have an underactive thyroid, PCOS, I weigh 263lbs, my sugar level last week was 155, my blood pressure has always been alittle high. Is there anyone out there that has had all of these problems and their baby made it through. I need some hope here. Because, by not taking care of myself all these years, I could be the one to cause a stillbirth or late term miscarriage. Please help!

stargazer-I know of people having 10 pound babies vaginally and they were fine. I say that if you want a vaginal birth then that's what you should do. The doctors aren't always right, it's your body and your choice. :)

Just got back from the dr's and baby is measuring at 6lbs 4oz at 34 wks (33 1/2 depending on which due date you go by). My doctor said while she has seen u/s be wrong by 1lb 1/2 or more, she said we do need to start considering a planned c section. She asked which I prefer and I of course said I want a vaginal birth. She said I would have one more u/s @ 38 wks and we would go from there. Has anyone else had this happen to them? From what I have read about u/s in the third trimester they are very unpredictably accurate and I don't want to have a planned c section and end up with a 7 lb baby that I could have had vaginally. Any advice ladies?

I found out on Jan 7, 2009 when I went for my check up that starting this monday and thursday I will have to have a Fetal Non-Stress Test (NST) twice a week for a while. The reason the doctor said is becaue of my high blood pressure. She said its nothing to it, but I am still a little worried about it. This is my first baby and I want him to be fine. She said it will keep track with his heart rate and movements and all I have to do is wear some kind of belt for an hour that records everything. She also told me my blood count is a little low as well. I wish all of you well.

I was 209 when we became PG. I stayed so sick the first 4 months I lost weight...didn't gain any. Finally I started gaining weight and I was told I had gestational diabetes. I lost 2 pounds within the first week and then I've maintained that...so as of today(we go to the doc in 2 hours) I have only gained 8 pounds and I'm 32 weeks. My pants don't button or meet...lol I love my belly band.

For those of you that have been told not to gain weight or just don't want to gain weight - there is hope! I gained with my first two and with my third I really made an effort not to gain by making a point to eat smaller servings than I wanted and by eating healthier. When my baby was born I was weighing the same as when I got preggo...baby was born at 38 weeks 2 days and weighed 7 lbs. I

mamatess- thats such a sweet idea!!!! after my first chils was born, i never lost any of the 50 lbs i gained with her, and when she was 6 months we wanted another baby, we tried and tried and when she was 2, i went to drs to see what was wrong, they couldent find anything and said overweight people have a harder time to concieve and i reaaly needed to lose weight, i felt like i was slapped in the face, well about a year later, i lost like 20 lbs, gained it all back and got preggo.....then years later (last year) i was at my heaviest and got preggo again, then when baby was 2 months old, i was preggo again, welp hubby is getting fixed but my point is, losing weight never helped to me get preggo!!!!

Hello, Ladies! I would like to offer my gently-worn, but great looking pregnancy clothes to anyone who would like them and will pay the postage. I would simply send them COD, and you can have them! The colours are mostly blues and greens, sizes 22-28 (depending on my state of pregnancy!). Most of them are 'business casual' as I work in an office. I'm in Los Angeles, so I would suggest this be a woman in the US. If you are interested, send me a private note to my webpage here, and I will give you my personal email for your address. Good luck with EVERYONE's pregnancy!

babybloo232 - 325 days ago.
hey ya'll....did anyone have their doctors tell you how much weight you are allowed to gain during pregnancy?? i am 12 weeks and i already gained 2 pounds..my doc wants me to keep it below 10 pounds buuut how do you do that with the extra baby and water weight???

TashaS - 326 days ago.
Hi ladies! I'm looking for some advice... I'm overweight, have been most of my life, DH and I have been TTC for 14months now with no luck. Did any of you have trouble conceiving based solely on your plus size? Other than 'just loosing the weight' is there anything different that you did to finally get that BFP? Thanks ~ T

phoebe1973 - 339 days ago.
I started at 230 and have actually lost 10 lbs cause of nausea and not eating very much, so I can still wear my jeans at almost 14 weeks. some are a little tight in the waist, but on all of them, my below-the-waist pooch is DEFINATLY growing...I pop the zipper on every pair I own! Every time I sit down or bend, the barn door opens! I think I'm going to switch to elastic waist all the time.... I am concerned about having to have a C-section this time, since it's been 7 years since my last pg, I'm 35 and I have FMS. I don't know if I will have the energy to do natural.

Hello girls, I have an 11 mo old and am 10 weeks pregnant. I was overweight with my 11 month old and hadn't even tried to diet or lose any weight yet, although a lot came off without trying maybe 'cause I'm breastfeeding. Any way my dr. says he doesn't want me to gain ANY weight this time! I just don't know how. My tummy feels sick all the time and keeping food in it really helps. Has anyone else been told not to gain weight?

mommyby2 - 357 days ago.

45yroldtobe - I had a BFP as a result of IVF last January. I miscarried at 9 weeks because my baby boy had two extra chromosomes that made a very sick little guy. In June, I had a FET (Frozen Embryo Transfer) using fertilized eggs left over from our 1st IVF cycle. I am currently expecting a baby girl in March. Please send me a message if you have more questions. I'd be happy to answer them.

jessilyn02184 - 357 days ago.
jill- ur story sounds exactly like mine. except i was a few lbs more when i got preg with my 2nd, and lost 14 of, then gained a bunch. Now i am 36.5 weeks with my 3rd and weigh double what i did before i got preg with my first. I hate it, but i am just going to really try and make an effort to loose it after this one. I know the big 200 really is depressing, but try not to let it get you down, its for the baby, and its going to happen whether you want it to or not. As for working out a bit, i dont think there is anyting wrong with that. Its actually a good thing and will promote a healthy pregnancy. good luck to ya hun.

45yroldtobe - 357 days ago.
I was told I have a blighted ovum. I elected a natural miscarry. I am 44 and the doctor brieftly discussed donor egg? Has anyone had iv and worked?

erin b - 361 days ago.
jill1027 - It's never too late to start-as long as you're not thinking of going out and running marathons! Walking will help at any point-no matter if you've been excersizing before or not. And I've heard that it is possible to not gain anything-some women that start out larger eat healthier and excersize and actually end up losing fat and gaining baby. But if you do decide to start an excersize routine-go slow and take it easy. Good luck!

jill1027 - 361 days ago.
So here goes this is my situation.....I was pregnant with my first child and i was starting out at 135. by the time i delived him i was 194. by the way i'm 5'1 tall yeah that sucks. so at my 6 week check up i was down to 160 which was good but some how between that visit and my next one a year later i was up to 180....not sure what happened. now 4 years later i'm at 197 and 12 weeks pregnant so i'm depressed and i feel fat and my first set of maternity clothes do not fit at all. i feel like a whale and i look more pregnant that i am but its just fat not baby. I'm just wondering do you think walking and exercising (moderately) now would make a difference. so far in the past 5 weeks i've not gained any weight which is good but it the last trimester is when i gained it all last time and i'm sooooooo dreading hitting over 200 lbs. i'm stressing....and i've done this to my self which is the bad part.....for some reason i just cant seem to make my self exercise....but should i start now....would it really help at this point. ideally i'de like to gain nothing lol...not sure if thats possible
