Large Families

Large Families

A large family means built in playmates!

Large Families

Families come in all sizes and all families are special. Generally, a family with four or more children is considred to be a "large" family. For some families, this can occur when the mother or father has children from a previous relationship and then "blends" the family together as one. For others, a large family may come in the form of adoptive or foster children, some in addition to ther biological children they already have. Still, for others a large family may come naturally and both mother and father are biological parents to all of the children in the home. When it comes to a living in a large family, there are situations and concerns that are not always an issue in a family with one or two children. There are pros and cons to raising a family with lots of children.

Perhaps the biggest concern for most families with many children is money. Not only do children need to be clothed, fed, entertained and sheltered as infants and young children, they will also eventually need cars, educations and other items as they grow up. FInding affordable and quality daycare has often been a struggle for large families that need the stability of two incomes.

Besides finances, other large families often are faced with the fact that there simply are not enough hours in the day to give each child the one on one attention that they often demand. Some families combat this with a buddy sytem or "special" days with mom and dad. Usually, children that grow up in a large family are healthy and happy and appreciate the family that surrounds them.

The benefits of having a large family are plentiful. The children always feel like there is someone around to play with and share their time with. Because there are more people living in the home, chores can be divided easier. Each person can be responsible for keeping up with their particular chore. Older children are often paired up with younger siblings to help them throughout their daily tasks. Lastly, there is always enough love to go around! Hugs, kisses and other means of affection are readily available for each and every member of the family!

If you are part of a large family, feel free to share your story or other comments that would be beneficial to others. Suggestions on daily activities, routines and organization are appreciated.

Sooo bizarre!! But I still miss being pregnant. Not trying, but hoping to maybe have a go at it one last time... lol

alomah - 18 days ago.
Wow mommyagain9th, Your family is beautiful. I just checked out that family pic on your page. Because my childrens ages are so far and wide its quite often hard to get EVERYONE together for a full family pic but one day I will achieve it. Thank you for your prayers for my daughter. She is considering IVF but not REALLY sure about it. We pray persistently for the Lord to open her womb and grant her a family of her own.

mommyagain9th - 19 days ago.
fiveplusone: you'll do GREAT!! My sister has 5 boys and 1 girl. Soooo sorry to hear about your summer. I was the youngest of 12 kids. Therefore I never knew my grandparents at all..Life is sacred and God Bless your little one to be..he or she has a purpose in this world...and my parents we're absolutely wonderful as I'm sure you will be too.

mommyagain9th - 20 days ago.
Alomah: Ahhhh hope your daughter gets her wish real soon. I'll send prayers her way.....God willing it will happen. Hopes she's thrilled about your news anyway. It just shows how we have no control...

alomah - 20 days ago.
mommyagain9th....I know exactly what you mean. I haven't had any trouble conceiving obviously but my eldest daughter has been married for coming up 7 years and desperately wants children but nothing happening. Its so sad and its so hard on her when I keep having to tell her that her mum is pregnant yet again.

mommyagain9th - 22 days ago.
I have heard it all as well with my 9 kids. Mind you, I've found that I've been getting more compliments the last few years. I do feel bad as well for those who are desparately trying to conceive and I really don't even try. I suppose it is just meant to be...

Louisec - a pink poodle! hahaha! My mum was 7th of 7 too and she loves the whole big family thing (her mums side was jewish, dads side catholic) (i'm supposed to be catholic but i don't go to church and i'm not married)I was an only child and so was my partner so i think that's why we went bonkers!I love hearing what the children from large family have to say on the matter - you rarely hear them complain about having so many brothers/sisters and i'm sure that the pros far outweigh the cons.I'd love to have lots of uncles and aunties for my children. i think you're very, very lucky :)

louisec - 23 days ago.
embooshkin: i am the youngest of 7 and when i was growing up, no one batted an eyelid at this. we were from a catholic background (grandparents were from Ireland) my grandmother had 13. Now i cant believe that their are TV programmes about people who have 8 children and how they cope. This makes television? Its just silly! There is nothing wrong with having 7 children in any age. Its up to the individual. In our family, some have had 1 and some have had 5 children. we are all different, and it was great growing up with all of these people. Now as we are older, they are invaluable now that our parents have died. They are a link to my mum and dad. and funnily enough i was number 7 and i was a surprise too, my brother (5 at the time) sadly wanted a pink poodle instead lol

embembooshkin - 23 days ago.
We're 32 weeks pregnant with our 7th baby and the rude questions we get asked sometimes!! No we don't rely on the state! Yes,they're all from the same dad!No we're not in any way religious nuts! (we don't do religion) Yes, they all have our time, attention and love (and the school age ones are all at or near the top of their class at school, with no pushing!!!) They were all planned! (ok, number 7 was a happy surprise)And yes! we do have a television set LOL

thinkpink - 23 days ago.
I think that most of the negative comments are because we have become a self centered and materialistic society! Our homes are more important than what we fill them with. SO sad. There may also be a bit of jealousy.

louisec - 23 days ago.
I am currently 15 wks pregnant with my 4th child. eldest is 17 middle is 10 and youngest is 6 months old. I will have 2 under one next april. I am 44 yrs old and the last 2 pregnancies have only been hard because of a pregnancy related disability (SPD) but apart from that I think its great that i can continue to have babies. It makes me feel sad for those women who are finding it difficult to conceive. My grandmother had a baby at 45yrs in 1945 and my mother had 7 children. im not sure whether fertility can be passed down? What i am worried about is my first born feeling pushed out. He does not say anything but he does like my attention a lot. any suggestions. I cant pick him up and cuddle him as he is 6ft 2 lol

Congratulations on all the wonderful large families. I'm 40 and currently have 9 children...Never planned any of them...They are considered God's little blessings. Do I have a 10th in my future - who knows?? My mother had me (12th and last child) when she was 43. I was considered her best and easiest delivery... Good luck and happy babies to all..xx/oo

shelly32 - 28 days ago.
i would love to have a large family. I've always wanted 4-6 but recently am wondering if I'll end up wanting more. I have two already. an almost two year old and a 6 month old and want to be pregnant again! what is wrong with me? What happens if my DH only wants 4 and I want more? I'm so worried about one of us not being happy...I guess only time will tell! Has anyone ever had nausea during ovulation? I actually threw up today? I just had AF from oct 13-19th and we BD'd on the 24th and had a spot of bleeding on the 25th...there is no way I am having MS already so must be from hormonal changes from ovulation i'm guessing as I'm still nursing my daughter...it would be a nice surprise to be pregnant though :)

alomah - 48 days ago.
Hi everyone, I just found out that we are expecting our 10th baby in June 2010. We are absolutely delighted. Our youngest was born 15mths ago and he was our first since a vasectomy reversal so to find out God has blessed us again is just so amazing.

People are very negative about large families. Most ask me if I'm crazy. lol

Then*Along*Came*7 - 113 days ago.
Hello everyone! I've noticed that some people these days tend to look down upon large families. I'm so glad to have a place that I can go to get support, kind words, and advice! Hope you all have a happy and healthy pregnancy!

mommy2b - 121 days ago.
littlemommy-I think as women we will always have the baby fever. Even if it only last an hour that its just in our system to want kids. I only have 2 and have said that I didnt wany anymore but for the past few weeks, I've had baby fever. I have friends that def. do not want anymore and have had their tubes tied, but they still have their moments where the thought of just 1 more baby sounds nice. Like I said, it may last for just an hour, but its kinda nice to still have that 'want'. You know? I have 2 boys and would love to have a girl but I really don't know if we are finished. Neither one of us are 'fixed' so it could def. happen. Plus, my hubby wants us to have a girl so I'll get to go thru the whole prom dress, wedding dress, grand babies, etc that mom and daughters get to share.

littlemrsmommy - 160 days ago.
Hello all, I am mom to four beautiful kids. A 9 yr. old daughter, 7 yr. old son, 2 yr. old daughter, and 1 yr. old son. DH and I were so sure that 4 kids would be enough especially due to how the economy is right now. I use a non-permanant method of birth control 'because I just knew that I didn't want anymore'. Most of the time I still feel that way. However recently I have been feeling an urge to have another one. Then I try to convince myself that those thoughts are just crazy and I would be really crazy to have another now or anytime in the near future as my hands are already full. I don't know why I get those urges but I wanted to know if any of you ladies ever felt this way. If so, what did you do about it? Does it take time to get over this urge? Do you think it is natural (human nature) to feel this way?
