Are there additional risks ro being overweight during pregnancy?

Plus Size And Pregnant
In the United States, 3 our of every 10 women are considered obese. You are considered obese if your BMI is 30 or higher. Half of all pregnant women are considred overweight. While there are additional risks associated with being obese during pregnancy, most women will continue to have successful pregnancies. While doctors like to raise awareness about being overweight and pregnant, it is not to make the mother feel bad. The information is simply available as an extra means of education for what could potentially occur.

There are risks involved with being overweight during pregnancy. Not only can the extra weight make you feel sluggish and exhausted, your physical health and the health of your developing baby is at risk. Overweight women have increased risks of devoping hypertension and gestational diabetes. The risk of suffering a miscarriage or stillbirth is also increased if you are overweight. Because gestational diabetes carries the potential for a very large baby, overweight mothers are more likely to require a cesarean section to deliver their baby. Preeclampisa and hypertension raises the risk of a stroke, which also can cause a woman to have to deliver her baby via cesarean section. Performing a cesarean section on an overweight woman is also harder because of the additional layers of fat that have to be cut through.

Just as slender mothers and "average size" mothers will need maternity clothing, plus-size mothers will also need maternity clothes during their pregnancy. There are many stores that offer plus size maternity clothing for pregnant mothers. One of the easiest types of shirts to purchase is an empire waisted style that will allow you to show off your belly and stay comfortable as your pregnant belly grows. Often times, baggy t-shirts or stretch pants can be just as comfortable as maternity clothing. You do not have to spend a fortune to be comfortable during your pregnancy. Have a certified bra fitter measure you and fit you for a good fitting bra during your pregnancy. Check out online stores for additional options for larger maternity clothes if a particular store does not offer your size.

You can not diet during pregnancy. For the safety and well-being of your developing baby, losing weight during pregnancy is not recommended. Some women will lose some weight during the first trimester because of morning sickness and vomiting. However, you can watch what you eat and exercise to remain healthy throughout the nine months. Consume enough of the right calories, rather than eating high fat and calorie foods. Refrain from consuming foods and drinks that are high in sugar. Make sure that you are drinking plenty of water and exercise moderately daily. Health care providers recommend that an overweight woman gain approximately 15-25 pounds during her pregnancy.

Rather than focusing on the negative effects that being overweight and pregnany pose, try to focus on the positive. By eating the right foods, exercising and taking care of your body, you can continue with your pregnancy knowing that your actions are positively effecting your baby.

45yroldtobe - I had a BFP as a result of IVF last January. I miscarried at 9 weeks because my baby boy had two extra chromosomes that made a very sick little guy. In June, I had a FET (Frozen Embryo Transfer) using fertilized eggs left over from our 1st IVF cycle. I am currently expecting a baby girl in March. Please send me a message if you have more questions. I'd be happy to answer them.

jessilyn02184 - 4 days ago.
jill- ur story sounds exactly like mine. except i was a few lbs more when i got preg with my 2nd, and lost 14 of, then gained a bunch. Now i am 36.5 weeks with my 3rd and weigh double what i did before i got preg with my first. I hate it, but i am just going to really try and make an effort to loose it after this one. I know the big 200 really is depressing, but try not to let it get you down, its for the baby, and its going to happen whether you want it to or not. As for working out a bit, i dont think there is anyting wrong with that. Its actually a good thing and will promote a healthy pregnancy. good luck to ya hun.

45yroldtobe - 4 days ago.
I was told I have a blighted ovum. I elected a natural miscarry. I am 44 and the doctor brieftly discussed donor egg? Has anyone had iv and worked?

erin b - 8 days ago.
jill1027 - It's never too late to start-as long as you're not thinking of going out and running marathons! Walking will help at any point-no matter if you've been excersizing before or not. And I've heard that it is possible to not gain anything-some women that start out larger eat healthier and excersize and actually end up losing fat and gaining baby. But if you do decide to start an excersize routine-go slow and take it easy. Good luck!

So here goes this is my situation.....I was pregnant with my first child and i was starting out at 135. by the time i delived him i was 194. by the way i'm 5'1 tall yeah that sucks. so at my 6 week check up i was down to 160 which was good but some how between that visit and my next one a year later i was up to 180....not sure what happened. now 4 years later i'm at 197 and 12 weeks pregnant so i'm depressed and i feel fat and my first set of maternity clothes do not fit at all. i feel like a whale and i look more pregnant that i am but its just fat not baby. I'm just wondering do you think walking and exercising (moderately) now would make a difference. so far in the past 5 weeks i've not gained any weight which is good but it the last trimester is when i gained it all last time and i'm sooooooo dreading hitting over 200 lbs. i'm stressing....and i've done this to my self which is the bad part.....for some reason i just cant seem to make my self exercise....but should i start now....would it really help at this point. ideally i'de like to gain nothing lol...not sure if thats possible

I am pregnacy for the 1st time at the age of 44 weighting 215lbs. Just wondering if there anyone that is older like me that is pregnant? 2nd question at 9wks I am very bloated and need some comfortable jeans. I purchased some jeans from Maternityhood and found that the jeans will not stay up. Does anyone know where I could purchased some jeans that will you don't have to pull them up every 30 seconds?

myThreebears - 12 days ago.
thanks ladies. It's amazing what people feel entitled to say to a pregnant woman. Thank you for the support cause it has certainly gotten me down, BUT, I am trying so hard to keep on the positive side about my weight and this pregnancy. I even went and got my family portraits done and had a maternity photo taken! lol, this was a big step!! I encourage all of you ladies to get a nice picture done because it's a beautiful time in our lives that we can reflect on later. I hope all is well with you guys, it's been pretty slow in here lately, so it was definately nice to chat a bit

jerika26 - 13 days ago.
myThreebears-that was a very insensitive and rude thing for that woman to say. I'm glad that you didn't make your purchase there. I'm glad there are other people who are in the same boat as me. I lost all of my weight with my first two pregnancies after dieting and exercising. I was so skinny!! But I finally met my wonderful husband 4 years ago and since then I have packed the pounds on...I guess happiness does that to you. I get so depressed about my weight, but he constantly tells me how beautiful my belly is and says 'my baby is having my baby'. He is so wonderful and I don't know what I would do without him. I think I gained so much weight because I finally have someone to eat with!...lol

stargazer530 - 13 days ago.
Wow! She really knows how to make a pregnant woman feel special, doesn't she? Some people are so stupid. Don't pay any attention to her. Unless you want to go back and smack her. Lol. She sounds like she deserves that kind of attention.

jmcbrown2002 - 13 days ago.
OH my goodness! The nerve of that lady!! I am pretty sure if someone would have said that to me when I was pregnant there would have been an earfull for them afterwards!!! I cant believe you didnt tell her off!!! Ugh..I wanna kick her in her shin!!!

myThreebears - 13 days ago.
hello ladies I just needed to vent. ok, so for my christmas present my husband wants to buy me a ring. I have always wanted a pink saphire and diamond ring done in white gold and that is his gift t to me this year. Anyways, we were at the jewellers last night browsing through their selection, I had tried on a few and I had mentioned to my husband how 'trying on rings when you 34 weeks isn't exactly flattering with the swelling that's going on' We both kind of laughed and the sales lady says 'oh I didn't even know your pregnant you just look big' I couldn't believe she said that to me!! I mean, yes I am bigger, however I have this big old round pregnant belly and any one who looks at me makes a comment of how 'your going to pop any day now', I was so upset, omg, how humiliating, needless to say we won't be going back there for any purchase. Some people and their mouths, geesh, I think the comment has me more upset than it should due to all the hormones raging through my body, lol.

jessilyn02184 - 15 days ago.
at my last visit was told i have gained a total 38 lbs so far, but im assuming its mostly baby and water, because i still can fit my prepregnancy jeans, just can button them.. my doc didnt seem to be too concerned, but i hate getting on the scale and seeing the number. Its really devastating. The one good thing is, is my hisband has a thing for big girls, so i dont think i have to worry that he isnt happy. it is nice when you have someone who loves you for you, my ex was a complete ass and after i had my first, i put on weight like crazy and everyday he would remind me how i am not the same size as i was when we first met. It use to hurt my feelings like crazy, but oh well, my husband is much more supportive.

nicole207 - 15 days ago.
hey girls.. i started out my first pregnancy at 130, the day i delivered my son i was 212lbs. he was 5lb9oz. i think steroid shots had some to do with why i gained so much... but now im pregnant again, and i am 8 weeks and i weigh 207.. it sucks.. i wish i was thin and i didnt just look fat in my belly pictures.. im embarrased... its so hard when you see skinny people, and thier cute bellys.. ugh.. sorry just had to vent!

MAG04 - 16 days ago.
HELLO LADIES... I WAS JUST CHECKING IN... I WEIGHTED 287 WHEN I FIRST GOT PREGNANT AND MY DR TOLD ME I WAS OBESE AND SAID I COULDNT GAIN ANY WEIGHT... HE TOLD ME TO EAT BETTER AND WALK AN HOUR EVERY DAY... I WAS 265 AT 9 MONTH PREGNANT AND NOW THAT MY BABY IS 7 WEEKS OLD I WEIGH 244... IM SO EXCITED I BOUGHT NEW PANTS AND FEEL GOOD. IM STILL BIG AND HAVE WEIGHT TO LOOSE BUT IM HAPPY....

My2nd - 16 days ago.
Hi jessilyn, I am worried about my weight gain too, I picked up 8kg in only 22 weeks! Yikes! I am so worried, don't know why I am picking up that quickly. I know the chocolates and ice-cream don't help....but planning to start walking or something, can't go on like this. Think I will be double my pre-preg size when I am done! Ouch! This is kind of sad for me.

marchmadness661 - 17 days ago.
UGH!! I HAD MY BABY SEVEN MONTHS AGO! !AND IM STILL A FAT COW!! I NEED TO LOSE SOME DAMN WEIGHT!! BLAHHHHHHHH IVE DONE DIETS! WORKED OUT!! AND NOTHING SEEMS TO WORK!! IM JUST GONNA STOP TRYING! AND NOT THINK ABOUT IT!! HOPEFULLY!! NOT THINKIN ABOUT IT MY FATNESS WILL FALL OFF! ON ITS OWN!! HAHAHHAHAHA PEACE!!

mcgill31 - 21 days ago.
I went for a level 2 ultra sound yeaterday and I was told that I am only 17 weeks and at first I was told I was in my 19 week. They said the baby was weighing 9oz and that is a 18 week old fetus, this is very confussing. This is my first child. I was told that they couldn't see everything on the baby because I was a large lady, that was not nice. I was told my triple sqad screen came back postive for down sydrome, but they said the ultra sound of what they could see is neg. so that is a good sign. I was told it was too early to tell what sex it is at this time, They would not even give me a ultra sound photo of my baby in 3D and they don't really know how many weeks I am they keep changing it and it making me mad.

jessilyn02184 - 33 days ago.
i just worry because i gained alot more with this one then the last, and that scares me, but i know breast feeding helps, so i am definitly still going to be doing that,

stargazer530 - 33 days ago.
Yes, I am definitely worried about the weight gain. My husband and I want to have at least 2 more babies and I am already 28 and he's 5 yrs older than me, and I want to lose a good deal of weight before we get pregnant again. Not to say this is helping with my chocolate or ice cream cravings. Lol. If you lost all your weight that quickly after giving birth, I would say you have a very good track record to be able to do it again this time around.

jessilyn02184 - 33 days ago.
hey ladies, just a quick question. I got pregnant about 4 months after my daughter was born, i had lost all my weight, but i seemed to gain twice as much with this one. Now i am afraid i am not going to be able to loose it. My doctor has not said anything about my weight, but everytime i get on the scale, i get more and more worried that i wont be able to get back to pre-pregnancy weight. I was about 230 before pregnancy, and now i weigh i think 264, its really starting to upset me, i have 7 and half weeks to go yet, i dont know what to do. Anyone else worried about their weight gain and loosing it?
