Missed Period: A missed period is perhaps the most obvious sign of pregnancy, yet some women do continue to have periods during their pregnancy.
Implantation Bleeding: Because the embryo implants in the uterus 8-14 days after conception occurs, implantation bleeding may be one of the first signs of pregnancy. Although some women mistake implantation bleeding for a light menstrual period, this type of bleeding is usually earlier and doesn’t last as long as a typical period.
Breast Changes: Many women find that their breasts become swollen and tender during the early weeks of pregnancy. Wearing a supportive bra will help with the soreness. The breasts may also feel heavier. Darkening of the areola, the skin around the nipple, is also common during pregnancy.
Fatigue: Another common symptom of pregnancy is fatigue. Some women find that they need to take a mid-day nap to function properly. This increase in tiredness is due to the rising levels of progesterone, increased blood production and lower blood sugar levels. Getting plenty of sleep at night and resting your body throughout the day will help minimize your feelings of tiredness.
Mild Cramping: Because the embryo is implanting itself in the uterus, it is not uncommon for women to feel mild cramping that resembles menstrual cramps during early pregnancy. This is not usually a cause for concern, unless it is accompanied by heavier bleeding.
Nausea: Morning sickness affects many women during pregnancy. And while it usually lessens after the first trimester, some women experience nausea for the duration of their pregnancy. To help ease the nausea, eat several small meals throughout the day and keep crackers or rice cakes beside your bed for an early morning snack.
Frequent Urination: Because the uterus expands during pregnancy, frequent urination is common during pregnancy. Though most women feel the effects of this at approximately 6-8 weeks into the pregnancy, it will likely last for the remainder of the pregnancy as the uterus continues to expand and the baby gets heavier. This puts pressure on the bladder.
Headaches: Because hormones increase drastically during pregnancy and blood circulation is rising, headaches are not uncommon.
Q: Because of headaches, back pain and breast tenderness, I’m not feeling well and I need to take some kind of medication to get through the day. What can I take and is it safe?
A: Other than prenatal vitamins, no medication is considered completely safe for use during pregnancy. However, acetaminophen (Tylenol) has been approved for use during pregnancy.
