Emotional Changes

Pregnancy is a time of change for women. And while we all expect physical changes during this time, emotional changes are often unexpected. The truth is that emotional changes are common and normal during pregnancy and even after delivery. Nearly all women will experience varying levels of emotional changes, including mood swings throughout their pregnancies.

What causes mood swings and emotional changes during pregnancy? Hormones are the most obvious factors. Both estrogen and progesterone levels change during pregnancy, affecting the neurotransmitters within the brain and causing mood swings. Most women find that these initial mood swings, caused by hormonal changes, even out around 10-12 weeks of pregnancy. They then return in the third trimester as delivery draws near. Emotional changes can also be affected by reduced amounts of sleep, increased fatigue, self-image and day-to-day stress.

Realizing that emotional changes are normal and expected during pregnancy will make mood swings easier to deal with. Finding ways to help you cope with the changes you are experiencing are helpful. Here are some tips to reduce the occurrence and severity of mood swings:

• Try to get at least eight hours of sleep each night. If you find that sleep is uncomfortable, purchase a pregnancy body pillow for support during the night.
• Don’t be afraid to stop your normal activities during the day to take a break. Lifting your feet up and taking a short nap will rejuvenate your mind and body, making stress easier to handle.
• Eat three well-balanced meals and several healthy snacks throughout the day. Consuming a diet that’s rich in nutritious foods will also give you more energy.
• Participate in an exercise program designed for pregnant women. Prenatal yoga is an excellent way to keep in shape and relax during pregnancy.
• Continue to do things you enjoy! Go shopping, get a massage, a pedicure or have a girl’s night out with friends.
• Seek out support. Spend time with your partner, friends, family or another group of individuals who can help you and support you when you are feeling down.
• Realize that you need to take it easy. Don’t take on more obligations than you feel comfortable with. It’s okay to tell people “no” and it’s also okay to ask others for help when you feel overwhelmed.
