Hi ladies, just checking in here. I'm 20 weeks with #2. I had gd last time and was diagnosed again at 11 weeks. I was on medication last time around because of my high fastings, but so far I've been able to manage without meds. Here's a tip for those of you struggling with your fastings. For a night time snack, make sure you are eating something that is within your carb limits (probably around 30 g) but it should be high in fat. I usually do an icecream bar or something like that. This has helped my numbers greatly in the morning! The higher fat, the longer it takes the bs to drop. So my body keeps working on it all night and doesn't have time to rest so that the numbers start creeping up again. I'm figuring out all the things I didn't understand the first time around. If anyone has any questions or wants to talk, feel free to contact me!

I was just told that I have GD. I'm not sure what to think or what to do. Waiting for nutritionist to call for my appt. and then to the ultrasound to check on the little guy's weight. I haven't gained any weight at all during this pregnancy and thought I was doing great. :o(

Hello ladies. Today I was told I had GD as well. My baby measured perfect. which i'm glad but my bs was 182! I have the 3 hour test in 2 days and I hope they will come back differently but because this test was so high I doubt it. I feel really worried for my little girl. Any comments on what I should be eating/ drinking and how to excersize while pregnant please leave me a message!

Hey everyone! I just wanted to let you all know that after being diagnosed with GD at week 30 I had my baby boy on 10-7-10 and he was born 6 pounds 12 ounces! I couldnt beleive it! So dont feel discouraged ladies just because you have gd doesnt mean you will automatically have a huge baby! Thats what I figured would happen..but it didnt! Also baby was born very healthy!

jenifer- I don't know of any sites but until you find out just limit your carbs- sugars such as milk, candy and fruit-don't drink any fruit juice. limit carbs to 45-60 grams per meal (look at the back of packages and make sure you're looking at the serving size) breads and pastas have a lot of carbs so limit those (dont eliminate all together though) and you can have all the protein you want (meat and eggs) I like salads with lots of veggies and some meat like chicken or steak strips. Ceasar salad dressing has hardly any carbs and cheese hardly has any either so you can stock up on that. And you can drink diet soda just not regular. Hope that helps and good luck!

Iv had lower bs today, Iv been high , then my metformin was doubled yesterday, and my bs have been a lot lower...all normal, the today I woke up with a fasting of 60, then I felt like I was gonna pass out before lunch, I checked my bs, it was 34. I had oj and ate checked again 20 min later it was 120. Now Im feeling like its starting to get lower again. Iv been on met for almost 2 yrs now, but have never had diabetes too...the doc says and the pharmacist says met doesnt lower your bs, or bottom you out....however I was reading online it says that it is rare, but can happen. and it says that it usually happens in combination with other diabetes meds. Just wondering if anyone has had any of these issues? maybe just a bad day...we will c how the week goes i guess.

Pauline-if this helps-ignore sugar on labels and only look at carbs. you want 3-4 carb servings per meal except breakfast limit to 1-2 a carb serving is approximately 15 carbs and lets say for example it says there is 22 carbs in a serving on the label you look at but then below it there is 8 grams of dietary fiber, you can subtract the fiber from the carbs to give you an accurate carb serving so 22-8 would be 14, so approximately one carb serving. Also eat lots of proteins-eggs and meats and for snack time make sure you only eat 1-2 carb servings just make sure dont avoid carbs altogether! hope this helps!!

Jamisonsmommy - i think if your doc measures your belly and it isnt the right size, to small or large then they may. thats what my doc told me, any ways..i think at some point they will do one just to check the babys weight ect. I see the doc once a week and have been getting US every 2weeks but for a weakened cervix issue.
I went to the doc today, and my bs have been lil higer than they should, so shes upping my metformin dose. so we will see how that does! hopfully that works, and iv been doing pretty good with my diet. as much as i can figure out on my own anyways....i c the dietitian the 19th. Sure i wont need her by then!

I'm 25 weeks pregnant and was just told that I have Gestational diabetes:( I'm worried. I'm still waiting to hear when my appointment is to discuss my situation. I don't know what I should be eating, I'm not sure what I should be avoiding (other than sugar-and foods high in carbs) Sigh... Stressed to the max right now...

enriched- I have to check mine an hour after eating as well.
Doc said for me to test 4x a day, fasting one like to be under 90, then hour after meals 140 or lower, if i check at 2hr 130 or lower.
I have been on metformin before I was pregnant, not for diabetes, but for PCOS which helped get me pregnant! and carry this baby so far to 28and half weeks! So I dont know how its working for controlling the GD part yet, since iv just started checking my bs last week. But you should for sure make sure you talk to your doc before just stopping it.

I am told to check my sugars 1hr after eating. the one after breakfast is often high about 8.1. Even the Metformin hasn't helped. 2hrs testing is always under the limit. I was happy before the GD thing started. I feel like I am taking an exam 4 times a day. Baby measuring ok. I am seriously considering stopping the Met and just exercise cos walking brings it down.
I wonder why I have to test after 1hr instead of 2hrs

hurrymarch-if you are taking the 1 hr and your levels come back elevated, you will have to take a 3 hour. If you are taking a 3 hour and your levels come back elevated you will get an appointment with a dietician and diabetes counceler (sometimes it's the same person). You'll get a blood sugar monitor and you will have to check your blood sugar 4 times a day. You'll follow a diet that resembles: 2-3 carb servings for breakfast, 1-2 carbs for snack, 3 carbs for lunch, 1-2 for snack, 3-4 for dinner, 1-2 for snack and you will need to wait 2 hours between each meal. Good luck, hopefully you won't have to deal with it. This is baby 2 for me and my 2nd time with gd, booo. Feel free to ask me questions anytime.

I must add I am enquiring on behalf of my friend who is pg with her second and had GD with the first. Here in the UK every dr/midwife visit, which are approx every four weeks, then two weeks later in pregnancy, your urine is tested for protein and glucose on each visit, so you have warnings and after three high glucose results you are tested for GD. She tucked into her dessert on sunday while resigning herself to the fact that she will get it again, but can it be avoided by keeping sugar intake low?

Hello ladies, I have a question? If you had GD during your first pregnancy, are you likely to get it in your second and can you take steps to avoid it happening?

Hello Ladies, I just found out yesterday that I have GD. I will be 30 weeks tomorrow! I was so upset but I will do whatever it takes to make sure that my little girl arrives without any problems. I really can not feel the shot but the diet is something that I am going to have to get use to. My numbers are normal so far! Belly rubs to all!!!
