Hey ladies, hang in there I know how tough it is! My little girl is 6 weeks old. Those 16 week I had GD seemed to last forever. But my close care to my diet and exercise paid off. I reccomend exercise. With my last 2 I didn't exercise. With this one I began exercising in my 3rd trimester, and worked my way up to walking 3 miles 5 days a week up until my due date. I delivered a super healthy 7lb 1oz baby girl. My smallest of 3. If I ever get pregnant again I will definitely exercise, I feel that is what made the difference. I was expecting her to be 8lbs, since I had GD longer this time. By the way, you can check out my photos. I am of average size, so exercise is good for all.

hahahaha... hey you were under 120 so that's pretty good! LOL the past 2 days I've had issues w eating... like I'm sick of eating the same things... especially chicken and string beans! lol

Dawn2003 - 527 days ago.
LOL i eat cupcakes once in awhile..The other day I had two brownines for breakfast and a glass of milk and blood sugar was 118! My problem is I deny myself for so long and then when I do finally get some sweets I go overboard :( I have a sweet tooth, I always have..probably why im in this situation LOL oh well only a few more weeks!

one day - 527 days ago.
thanks kaddy!! I was bad and had a yuuuummy cupcake! needless to say my sugar after linch was 135!! I'll be good the rest of the week!! lol

kaddy - 528 days ago.
I am with you on the pills, especially if they are metformin (glucophage)... I take them along with insulin, and the first few days I started them( I was not pregnant at the time, thank god) I was sick to my stomach.... and I mean sick! The good news is, it goes away after a few days once your body adjusts... it also depends on the dose, I take 1000mg, but I do have type 1 diabetes. If any of you have to go on insulin, its really not as bad as it seems. I used to take 5 injections + a day, but now use an insulin pump. Its not a fun condition to have, but look at it this way, at least with GD its just temporary! As far as diet, the nutritionists typically give people with diabetes the GI diet to follow. You can find tons of info on it online, and it really does help! You girls are doing great... don't hesitate to ask me anything. :)

one day - 528 days ago.
Yea I was afraid to take those pills!! Since I'm on bed rest all I do is eat and test to pass the day! LOL So I've been pretty good!! I'm dying for a nice cold lemonade or iced tea aand I know that's going to mess up my levels! boooo maybe less sugar?? lol

Dawn2003 - 529 days ago.
They had me start on pills but they dropped my blood sugar to low and made me sick on a daily basis, so on insulin I went. I was not happy about it but used to it now. I suck at the diet part so this really does help keep my numbers lower. Not perfect but better. LOL Im counting down the days! :)

one day - 530 days ago.
Wow dawn you are almost there!!!! I am 31 weeks... I can't wait to be 36 weeks... I get my cerclage taken out and hopefully within a week or two have my daughter! I KNOW... I am always trying to remember when I started to eat so I remember to test 2 hours later. My endo gave me a scrip for some pills... I picked them up but didn't take them yet. I wanted to try following the diet first and so far so good!!! So I am not going to take them. besides the side effects scared me! LOL If they spike again then I'll start taking them, but I have been really good with the diet!!! Good luck with your labor!!!! You must be sooo excited!!! =)

Dawn2003 - 530 days ago.
Glad to hear! I know it does become like a full time job. I always have to pay attention to what time it is when I eat, and then watch the time after so I know two hours have gone by, when were out doing stuff then I have to come home for a bit PITA! When they first put me on insulin I was so ticked when they were telling me all the stuff I gotta do and the times that it needed to be done...I asked her if I should quit my job but ive gotten used to it and now its not so bad! Im 35 weeks so Im almost done!

one day - 531 days ago.
Just wanted to let u ladies know that I saw the dietitian and I have been much better w my levels!! I feel like it's my full time job! lol always figuring out what to eat next! haha

one day - 534 days ago.
thanks ladies... I have an appt tmrw. what sucks for me is that I'm on bed rest so i cant exercise!! I wonder if I'll be put on insulin to help regulate my levels more! enjoy your day!!!

JLea - 535 days ago.
one day, I went to a nutrition/gestational diabetes class at my local hospital as I was referred there by my doctor. It helped me a ton! They gave me a diet plan specially formulated for me and I've been abiding by that with perfect results. I recommend seeing the nutritionist and they can help you set up a diet plan so you can know how much and what you can eat! I eat 3 meals a day and have 3 snacks...I think I eat more with this diet than I did before and I'm hardly ever hungry!

Dawn2003 - 536 days ago.
Thank you Kaddy..I do feel better! I have been trying to eat better and keep levels at a level where they should be but I think your right, I think these OB doctors freak out over...well not much lol. One day I did meet with the nutrionest and they want me to meet with them again (for what I dont know) I have decided to cancel that appt. My due date is Oct 8th and I think I have been doing good with my diet and even exercising. I just dont see any point in wasting my time. They already have me checking my sugar level 5 times a day and insulin twice a day..thats enough

one day - 536 days ago.
hi ladies... I guess I have GD bc they gave me the lil monitor to check my levels four times a day... did u guys go to a dietitian also? I have to go to one bc my levels are still not always under 120... and when I wake up in the morning it's never under 90! my lowest is 111 in the am! I am going to call my endo tmrw to tell her my readings and I'm worried... I'm trying to eat better but I'm always hungry now! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!! =)

kaddy - 536 days ago.
Dawn, as a Type 1 diabetic, and pregnant with my second, I can assure you that having a reading at 140 after a meal is nothing to worry about! A lot of OB docs really, really scare people! My OB is always on me about my numbers, BUT the maternal/fetal specialist and my endocrinologist are not concerned because my A1C is always excellent. And they know that I am doing the absolute best I can. The maternal/fetal specialist that I see says that unless your A1C is 7 or higher, chances of diabetes related complications to the baby are extremely rare.

JLea - 536 days ago.
I'm on day 2 of checking my levels and they've all been within the acceptable ranges. It took me a while the first few times to press that little button! It doesn't hurt, but just the idea of a needle flying out freaks me out! I just got diagnosed at 34 weeks and now have less 4 and 1/2 weeks left so I guess I don't have to deal with this for too long! I'm guessing my case isn't that bad reading some of yalls stories. The diet is working out for me so far, but I want my sweets back too!

Dawn2003 - 536 days ago.
Oh man! I have had it with GD!! I just cannot seem to keep my blood glucose levels in check! Most of the time they are (Slightly) high and I am already taking two insulin shots a day. Last night my blood level was at 59..didnt bother to take a shot , I was already feeling shakey. I ate and even had regular mt. Dew, two hours later blood sugar level was at 118. Fasting levels are always good, but after meals is always right around 137 or 140 which they say is high but I guess not to me so much. Dad had type two diabetes and a lot of the time his levels were dang near 200+. I am ready for this pregnancy to be over! I miss my junk food :(

zukismama - 538 days ago.
hi.. :) just found out I have gd.. shouldn't be a surprise I guess since most of the women in my family have had it as well.. but UG! so I tried to avoid sugar altogether today then had this dizzy crazy spell - my mom said drink oj! what's the deal? sugars bad, sugars good? guess I'll have to find the balance. monday appt to talk diet. any advice out there? guess I'll have to check my blood and such as well. boo. more questions to follow, I'm sure....

kaddy - 540 days ago.
I have type 1 diabetes forever, and just wanted to let everyone know that while it is very difficult during pregnancy (this is my 2nd pregnancy), it is manageable. Keeping your BG levels under 120, especially after meals, is almost impossible for a type 1, so you ladies should feel excellent if you are maintaining control that tight. I have an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor stuck to me at all times (not just during pregnancy either), and I can honestly tell you that it is considered a good thing when my post prandial numbers are under 170. That being said, my son (who is 16 months, will be 20 months when his baby brother arrives), was born only 5 days early, and weighed a healthy 7lbs 4oz, and had absolutely no health issues. The numbers you girls are seeing should not be an issue. I have days (this afternoon, as a matter of fact) where my BG was over 300. It's all a matter of keeping your AVERAGE within the limits set by your doctor, and taking control of any highs that you do see immediately. Problems occur when you are running high constantly. For those not taking insulin, get information on the GI diet - it works wonderfully for those controlling BG with diet. I hope I was able to help and calm any concerns... and congrats, MOMMIES TO BE!

I was diagnosed with GD about a month ago. I am doing pretty good with it. I still have not gotten around to see the nutrisionst but conformend my diet based on internet seaches and family who have diabetes. Once and a while it jumps above 120 but more ofter i bottom out. I'm on a low dose pill to maintain my sugar.

I was diagnosed with GD about a month and a half ago. And no matter what i do i can't get my numbers at 120 and under. I eat the amount of carbs that they told me to eat at each meals and snacks. I have had my meds adjusted 4 times now. I had an ultrasound Tuesday and my lil girl is 7lbs and i am only 36 weeks. So i have no clue what to do. So i see myself having to go on the shot

zookeeper - 574 days ago.
sher19bear81 - If your fasting numbers are consistently above 100 (my doc's opinion) then you need to call your doctor and let them know. Even though you think you are following the diet be aware of things that we don't typically consider to be 'sugar' like potatoes, bread, corn, etc. If you are right on track with the diet and still having problems then you definitely need to contact your doctor...some women with GD need insulin to keep their numbers down.

HELP!!! I was diagnosed with GD on wednesday...since then I havent drank any soda pop or juice (all water and tea with splenda) and Ive been following the diet. I havent eaten ANY sweets but I can NOT get my numbers to read normal...even the fasting number! I feel like crap and have no clue how to fix this!! Any advice?

kaeolli - 589 days ago.
Hello...I have been diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes now for about two weeks. I think this has been one of the worst two weeks of my life. I have been asked to test my blood levels 4 times a day. I usually have it under control until it comes to my fasting numbers. I was told today that I was going to have to take the pill that puts insulin into my body. I had a u/s a couple of days ago and was told the baby was measuring just right 3lbs 7 ounces. I have been an emotional wreck. I am so scared of getting a c-section. I am trying to do anything possible to allow me to have the baby vaginally. I have two children and have never went through this before. It is so scary and yet so frustrating that there is nothing you can actually do to control your numbers while you are sleeping.

Hi thanks, I have been using my insulin now for about two weeks, and my sugar levels are a lot better and look great! My ketones are still high sometimes in the morning, so I started eating a piece of whole grain wheat bread with peanut butter before I go to bed! The ketones have droped to trace and sometimes neg! I feel a lot better about it! I have some issues with blurry vision at night anyone else have this? I check my sugar levels and they are not super high 89-90's. Is that common?
