Monica, Thanks, i will prob have the stitch, but my consultant said its not just the length they are concerned with its if it is shortening or not, or funneling, it has been 2.4 by abdominal scan since the beginning, so we don't know its shortening yet, i am only just turning 15 weeks and i have to work to pay the mortgage and bills, i sit at a computor at work, with no lifting, if i have the stich in i will have a couple of weeks of sick and rest, but i can't leave work and go on Also i asked my consultant about resting and she said they don't know it helps although i am sure it does. There shouldn't be a lot of weight on there at the moment, and also the big thing last time was the infection which puts you at risk of preterm labour and pprom, so some of the dr's think it was all down to that or a combination, my midwife who is the head midwife for about 30 years also thinks it was the infection as she has seen me for all of my pregnancies and knows me really well, so at the moment no one is 100 sure that it is an ic. Thats what i am confused about, so i will see in the next couple of weeks and how i feel and maybe have it at 16 weeks if i have made that decision for sure, but its not one to take likely i am sure i am not the only one who has had doubts about having it in, i would like to find out if anyone on here has had an ic after a full term pregnancy before, and if you think it is 100pc an ic i have, does anyone else have a short cervix with no change throughout from beginning from a cone biopsy or anything, i had a feeling i was going to be advised by you ladies to have the stitch no doubt, but i do have doubts i am scared of it going wrong.

Ladies~ i got a question... i havent made it to third tri before and i know pressure is normal but sometimes when i quat... to do something like pick someting up etc.. i feel the urge to push or like i am about to rip in there... how normal is this... i mean i have the reg. pelvic/ hip pain ad it sucks and is painful.. but how do i know if something is wrong or abnormal...? i finally got over the fact that baby needs to sleep so i dont wake her up every 30 min b/c i freak out. still freak out a bit but just try to feel for her heart...

Ellie~ i think it is in your best interset to have the stitch it will really help keep your mind at ease.. also i was told sitting is a nono... b/c you are still putting loads of pressure on your cervix so lying on side is best and even legs elevated if you are shortening... i did this for about 3 weeks when i came back wiht lenght 2.2. and the next check i ws 3.5 :O) Also pushing / baring down with # 2 is not good either.. pressure again... I would also ask the dr/ob do do measurements accurantly.. mine were always quite diff. internal/ vs abdominal.. it is a bit uncomfy but you will get used to it..lol :O/ it is vital to take all precaustions.. i know i took them all and am almost 31 wks now:O) i took progestrone orlly as my ob didnt feel comfy with me putting anything in there.. though its fine either ay b/c suposidly i didint have a risk for preterm anyway just really bad IC and short / misshappen C. ... I wish you the best!!!!

Hi thanks both, i am on preogesteron suppositories which i use as a pessarie, since 10 weeks, i will make sure that the scan's are done vaginaly from now on, my consultant said she will put a stitch in if i want one now as precaution, or we can keep doing the scan's and see for now, i am worried that if i have it and it goes wrong and i didn't wait to see if i need it or not, i will blame myself but as you say the cervix can change quickly so it works the other way too, if i don't have it i will still blame myself, im just so scared of te stitch breaking my waters or causing a serious infection or labour to start, i have heard they are very successful, but i have also heard of a lot of ladies funneling to the stitch and then going into labour with it still in and it tearing the cervix, i am just confused as to why i carried Taylor till full term with no problem and needed to be induced, i did have painful head grinding from him in the last weeks, i thought it could have been weakened by the pregnancy with him, but my consultant doesn't think so. I have been resting a lot, hardly any housework, no baking or complicated cooking, trying to stay sitting or lying down most of the time. I will see what happens on Wednesday when i go back and try to talk to the dr about it.

elliebethl...so sorry you've had such a tough journey. I agree with DReavega...I think you are a great candidate for cerclage and progesterone injections/suppositories. Given your history, it is so hard to predict if you will have ic again, but I think your medical team should absolutely consider you a risk, just in case, and take extra precautions. Best wishes!

Elli, first off I'm sorry for all you've been through. All further cervical lengths should be done vaginally with an empty bladder. My opinion isnt to just keep checking weekly, but to get a cerclage placed immediately as the cervix can change quickly and with out warning. Also ask about using progsterone, in the states p17 is used often but in canada they use supposetories.

Hi all, im new and want to ask what you make of my cervix situation, i am confused any advise would be great. Please don't judge as its not my fault but my first baby was adopted against my wishes by ss in 2003, it was the father that was the risk and the ss took his responsibilites and then i had no where to go so Abbie was fostered at 3 week against my wishes. I left the father strait away and did everything i could at the mother and baby unit but failed my accessment. I am in touch with her and her parents once a year. The pregnancy was problem free as was the labour but she was only 4.11 probably due to the violence. 6 years later i got married and me and my husband Steve who is wonderful (and i have turned my life around so much i am proud) fell pregnant with Taylor, pregnanc was fine until the end when i developed hip pain and had to stay in bed, his movements slowed down and i think i started to go into labour and then at 40.3 weeks he stopped moving and was stillborn. It broke my heart and i couldn't believe he could be taken away i loved him so much. 6 months later we fell pregnant again, and at 20 week scan it was found my cervix was 19mm and funneling, my waters broke two days later on boxing day this year and after a week the infection (which i had at my scan as they did a swab and i had bv) took over and i had to deliver, we never found out the sex. They think it was down to the infection mainly. But i am 15 weeks pregnant again and can't bear losing another baby (please god) my cervix is measured every two weeks but my consultant has been measuring abdominaly, and it was measuring 2.4, then last wed she was away and the head cons measured me vaginaly and said i was 2cm and to go back in a week (wed next week) he said he would be advising a stitch if it was 1.5cm, but for now to see. I had a cone biopsy in 2002 after i had Abbie but i carried Taylor to full term in 2009, so now i can't work out why i would have an ic now? I think i have though, what do you think please?

@monika, I bet it feels so good to be planning your removal but I agree on the needle thing. I didn't realize they could do epidurals in the office, your doc must have a pretty good office!
@syrena, congrats on week 22!! I don't know how you can stand not having your length checked, it would drive me nuts!!!

Congrats on tri 3. it is so awesome... i am 30 wks on thur. and so super stocked... I know what you mean about the bedrest and going nutz i stayed good till wk 25 and hav been increasin activity slowly.. i still lye down for a hour here 30 min there and so i figure about 50% bed rest. it is so much nicer and doing things again is unbelivable who knew i could miss laundry and dishes..lol... i can't belive your on a cscooter... lol.. u dare devil.. my Dh wont even conider me riding on his motor cycle.. not even when i was a little pg.. mostly b/c the bumps and the cervix etc.. jus take it slow and asy and enjoy your self.:O) remember bed rest dosent mean 100 % but lye down and give your cervix a break...

Hello ladies, how is everyone doing?? I had an appointment yesterday with the MFM doctor and cervix looked great- between 4.1-4.3!! Im so happy I gained a little length, especially since Ive been a tad more active, going to the store (and using a scooter!!) and even helping prepare dinner...Ill be 26 weeks on Saturday and the light of the third trimester at the end of the second tri tunnel is getting brighter!! Hopefully the cervix will keep behaving despite me being up a bit more, I just needed to, laying down was driving me nuts and the MFM said she didn't think I needed bedrest anymore even though my ob wants to keep it up. Hope everyone else is doing well :)

Katrina~ I would ask for the stitch now!! it wil help keep you closed up and put your mind at ease... if you get the steriod injections at 24 wk or 23 and 6 days your baby has a good shot at survival with some posible dev. delays. My moms friend delivered a baby at 2 and 2 and 25 and 1 she had the steriod with bot and though both children remaind in INuc they are healthy.. the younger born one has one hearing aid and wears glasses the other just glasses.. thoguh not that surprseing since both parents have very poor eye sight and too wore glasses from childhood. :) I hope you can stay preggy as long as possible bt i would def. as why they aren't giving you the stich now...? or why they didnt do it a t 13 or 14 wks? it sounds like you have had a rough go for sure i really hope you bay can hang in there and you will be able to take this one home to love :O) Keep us updated!

Katrina-Why are they waiting to put the stitch in? You would think they would want to have it in as soon as possible. Don't give up hope. Just stick to the bed rest as much as you can. You are only a couple of weeks away from viability. Are they going to be giving you the steroid shots when you make it to 24 weeks? I don't know of anything else you can be doing if you are doing bed rest all ready. Maybe keeping your legs and pelvic elevated to keep the pressure off your cervix. Good luck and and I will be praying for you.

I need some advice. Im on my 6th pregnancy. First lost at 13 weeks (twins), second everything great until preterm delivery at 31 weeks. third did CL tvu screens and FFN test and hospital bedrest until deliverly at 33 weeks. fourth was ectopic. fifth did tvu cl screen (3.5 cm-2.5cm) and progesterone injections. CL didnt drop until 29 weeks. I delivered him at 31 weeks. My last son passed away 1/28/11 at 4mons 25 days old from the flu (H1N1 virus). We got pregnant again right away, maybe not the best decision we could have made, and have had lots of problems thru this pregnancy.
I bleed a lot at 8 weeks where we thought I miscarried but when we had the us to make sure everything was expelled we found a beautiful heartbeat and no cause for the bleeding. I started CL exams at 16 weeks which started at 3.5 cm. Im also now on progesterone suppositories nightly. Last week I got a bad kidney infection and was in the hospital with contractions and iv antibiotics. This week I went for another CL exan and my cervix dropped to 2.5cm. The docs are acting like i'm going to loose the baby. I want to do all I can to save him. I am on bedrest at home and they will be rechecking my cervix next tue and if it has shrunk at all then they will put me in the hospital in head down legs up position. If it has remained the same then they have me schedualed for a stitch next thrus.
I just want to know if this all looks pretty grim or do I have a chance? Is there anything more I can do to keep him in atleast till viability?

Carlos-Erin, that's great! I'm sure you'll continue to have an uneventful pregnancy. Monika and Beegee so happy you are both doing well and moving around more. I too have a big baby and I'm looking forward to a csection and not a vaginal birth since I have a tac. Hope you all have a great weekend!

monika...my 32 weeker was 4 lb 14oz. My 35 weeker was 6lb 12 oz. I think both of them would have been over 9 lbs...kind of a scary thought. The 32 weeker spent over 6 weeks in the NICU. I remember a nurse asking if I wanted to feed him; I hesitantly said 'yes'. She asked why I hesitated and I replied because he was tube fed. She didn't even realize he was only 32 weeks due to his size and thought he must be taking bottles. Both boys have remained very large in percentiles at 5 yrs and 3yrs. I'm fairly average in size, so I'm hoping my little girl is more my size. Anyway....keep it up; you're doing great!

beegee~ lol.. my ob is shockd that her 'growth spurt is just her growth' lol.. and she is shocked that i am still pg.. wiht short cervix IC and a miss shaped cervix she is thrilled to be in 3rd tri.. :O) we agreed to have a csection if i go to 34 wks we will book a date.. she is about 4 pds now and i am only 29 wks. my granmother who'm i seem to take the most from had all her babies over 10.5 to 13 pds. and one baby born preterm at 7 .5 months was 7.5 pds.. so i am not that surprised... though i did hope she would slow down a little bit.. her tummy is coming in the 99% for 2 months now and looks like the rest is 90-99% including her measurment of femur .. SO BIG AND TALL..LOL . its funny ppl think i am ready to pop b/c she is really big and i waddle around. the outside world can often see her move my beely wiggles and jump alot.. like a mini earthqauke.

Cervical length was 2.8 today at 26 wks. Very happy with that. This is close to the time I started dilating last pregnancy, so I'm eager to make sure that isn't starting yet. I think my regular doctor will check on July 11. My cervical length and everything else seems extremely comparable to my last pregnancy, so hopefully that means I can keep this baby in until week 35 too. Hope everyone is feeling well.
