Large Families

A large family means built in playmates!

Large Families

Families come in all sizes and all families are special. Generally, a family with four or more children is considred to be a "large" family. For some families, this can occur when the mother or father has children from a previous relationship and then "blends" the family together as one. For others, a large family may come in the form of adoptive or foster children, some in addition to ther biological children they already have. Still, for others a large family may come naturally and both mother and father are biological parents to all of the children in the home. When it comes to a living in a large family, there are situations and concerns that are not always an issue in a family with one or two children. There are pros and cons to raising a family with lots of children.

Perhaps the biggest concern for most families with many children is money. Not only do children need to be clothed, fed, entertained and sheltered as infants and young children, they will also eventually need cars, educations and other items as they grow up. FInding affordable and quality daycare has often been a struggle for large families that need the stability of two incomes.

Besides finances, other large families often are faced with the fact that there simply are not enough hours in the day to give each child the one on one attention that they often demand. Some families combat this with a buddy sytem or "special" days with mom and dad. Usually, children that grow up in a large family are healthy and happy and appreciate the family that surrounds them.

The benefits of having a large family are plentiful. The children always feel like there is someone around to play with and share their time with. Because there are more people living in the home, chores can be divided easier. Each person can be responsible for keeping up with their particular chore. Older children are often paired up with younger siblings to help them throughout their daily tasks. Lastly, there is always enough love to go around! Hugs, kisses and other means of affection are readily available for each and every member of the family!

If you are part of a large family, feel free to share your story or other comments that would be beneficial to others. Suggestions on daily activities, routines and organization are appreciated.

I have 2 from a previous relationship, my husband had one as well, we are expecting our 2nd together - so 5th one is on the way. If we could afford it, I would have more, but doesn't seem likely. People all look at us like we are selfish and rude, but I love the kids.

faith-star-x - 151 days ago.

ohiomomof4boys - 232 days ago.
We have 4 boys also, and we have people tell us all the time if we are crazy for having 4. I love it. I have always wanted a big family. We are ttc 1 more, hopefully it will be a girl, but another boy will be just as welcome.

Ilovechaitea - 232 days ago.
Hello! I am so glad I found this forum. Having large families is a lot of work. And to raise all the children right I need wisdom and guidance from others who have large families. We have 3 and ttc our fourth and finnal child. I'll find out next week if we have #4 on the way. I hope to have twins this time around for I dearly love children and at the thought of stopping just brings tears to my eyes. So Lord willing that will happen.

pugdunn - 232 days ago.
My husband and I have 4 beautiful boy 6 and under. People think we are crazy to have 4 kids but we don't really care what they think. We love are boys with all are hearts!!! Maybe just maybe we will try 1 more time to add a little girl to our family but only time will tell.

pregnant with baby 5.. about 28 weeks now - having heaps of heart palpitations, shortness of breath and always feeling beyond exhausted... even if I eat something sugary like chocolate - any suggestions of what else I can eat or drink to help with these annoying symptoms?

kirbyann - 326 days ago.
I LOVE photoshop!! I cleaned up the ultrasound photos I was given on disc, then put them into a printable collage I made up ( again in photoshop)... so happy with it! Feel free to check it out on my page. :D

kirbyann - 327 days ago.
Baby number 5 is a confirmed girl (#4 was a girl and the other 3 were boys). I am pleased Maileigh will have a sister... and will be close in age to enjoy life together. During the u/s she played peek a boo with her hand a couple times then it looked like she was clapping... so funny (and neat) to watch. Later she was puckering her lips like she was sending fishy lip kisses... tomorrow is moving day - it will be nice to be out of a temporary house and into something we can make into a home!

kirbyann - 332 days ago.
Congrats - some friends of ours just had their 8th about 4 months ago. Darling lil' thing! They have 7 girls and 1 boy - he'll certainly have an understanding of women most men wish they had!! We are expecting baby 5 in October and I keep wondering how I can get any bigger! I am seriously considering a tummy/back support belt thing... tired of holding it up myself - I NEED these hands for other things during the day. :) I am always so surprised by how big I am when I look in the mirror - I don't seem to feel that big but I sure look it!

bellydancer - 332 days ago.

Wohooooo it's alive in here :) hi all I'm a mum of 5 ages 12,11,8,3 & 20months ... My husband is dad to the youngest two but has taken on the older 3 as his own. I would still love 1 more but we only have a small 3 bedroom house and I am a Sahm so not looking likely anytime soon :( I've been on IAP a long time now and love this forum! So nice to see you all here and hope to make some new friends. Oh I'm 28 nearly 29 and from the uk ... I read back some and saw someone mentioned making a page/group on FB maybe for large families ? Great idea !!! If it goes ahead please let me know :)

Happy mothers day ladies :)

anxiousmami - 376 days ago.
Kirbyann- omgoodness yes I am in the same boat as you. Nonstop headaches. I thought mine were caffeine related but coffee doesnt seem to help. Tylenol helps for a little then headache is back :/ sux

kirbyann - 376 days ago.
At least I didn't burn any right? (only because we've been eating the dough!) Meh, it was good for those few bites here and there. Ha any body been having issues with 'stress headaches'? I don't feel particularly stressed so I don't see why I am getting them.. and they last for hours and sometimes days. They aren't debilitating (like a migraine) but certainly makes the days long and the nights uncomfortable. At first I thought it was because I wasn't drinking enough - certainly NOT the case now. The tylenal doesn't do any thing it seems and it my head only really hurts when I am not laying down, but then my shoulder hurts or my neck. Very frustrating and sort of confusing too...

kristymumof5 - 377 days ago.
Kirbyann I do that all the time more so u make all the kids first then by the time you get to yours you don't want it anymore well I'll be 33 weeks tomorrow yaa not long now :)

kirbyann - 377 days ago.
This morning I wasn't a very good mom... I woke up desperately wanting to eat some cookie dough so at 6:00am here I was mixing together a batch of cookie dough to eat. The kids wake up just as I am dishing myself some and as they each ask to have some I dish them some up in a bowl too, with a banana on the side. Nutritious! (too bad for me I only liked the first couple bites and then didn't want it any more - hate it when that happens!)

summerbaby7 - 378 days ago.
Anybody here have Pica, you knw the pregnancy disorder where you develop a craving for non-food stuff? For me it was always bathsoap, sweet smelling like coast, caress, castile i eat it maybe once or twice a day whichever one is available. They said maybe it's an iron defiency problem gotta ask doc nxt time i go back ironically it goes away right after baby comes.

jgirll@hotmail.com - 379 days ago.
That is so nice to read of people feeling the same way I do! I do not even have as many children as you all do. I am from California; is it any easier in any way living in a different state or country? Iit seems like here most peopl have 2 maybe 3 tops children. I know a couple of people that have 4, but the fourth is usually their extra 'gift' from God. I wouldn't say ours was a surprise, but he/she is coming a little earlier than planned :)

anxiousmami - 380 days ago.
Yes true I 'think my main issue is were VERY close with both of our parents. We live less than 5min from my mom and brother. We also live in the same apt complex as my bf's parents right above them!! Different units of course. Also, since my bf is in school , and I work there are times someone, a parent/sister/brother will keep the youngest since the oldest is in school. I mostly feel like there going to be more upset cause they may be like what we already help with the baby you have type response.

lisamomof8 - 380 days ago.
Breaking the news? We are always very excited about being pregnant no matter the opinions from others so when we break the news, we just tell everyone as if its our first, our enthusiasm outweighs any comments or rolling of eyes.... My husband and i make the issue their problem, not ours.... If they dont like it, have an opinion then so be it, thats for them to deal with... I stopped making other peoples opinions weigh me down years ago and i think they want to get a reaction from us and when they dont get it they quit.

summerbaby7 - 381 days ago.
