Morning Sickness
You can feel at ease to know that morning sickness usually decreases or stops by the 14th week of pregnancy!
Morning sickness
Morning sickness is very common. Most pregnant women have at least some morning sickness, and about a third have vomiting. Morning sickness usually begins during the first month of pregnancy and continues
until the 14th to 16th week.
Some women have morning sickness and vomiting
through their entire pregnancy. Morning sickness does not hurt the baby in any way. The degree of morning sickness during one pregnancy does not predict how you will feel in future pregnancies.
Does morning sickness tell you if it's a boy or a girl?
Does morning sickness vary in severity depending on the sex of the baby?
Some studies linked the presence of moring sickness with having a baby girl. However the results were not conclusive. Each woman and each pregnancy is unique in terms of moring sickness irrespective of the sex of the baby.
Morning sickness relief
- Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) has proven to be effective in reducing nausea.
Doses of 10-25 mg orally every eight hours on an intermittent basis of 2-3 days at a time are recommended as a first-line therapy.
- Try dried ginger root, ginger tea from fresh ginger root, and Zingiber officinale extract. Study showed that ginger effectively reduces both nausea and vomiting in pregnant women. The recommended dose is 250 mg four times a day.
- A few soda crackers or dry toast when you first wake up, even before you get out of bed in the morning.
- A small snack at bedtime and when getting up to go to the bathroom at night.
- Acupressure wrist bands (sea bands) or acupuncture may help. You can find these bands in drug, health food, and travel stores. If considering acupuncture, talk to your doctor and seek an acupuncturist trained to work with pregnant women.
- Avoid caffeine foods or drinks.
- Avoid foods high in fat and salt, but low in nutrition.
- Avoid fried, rich foods such as gravies, rich desserts, nuts, olives, sweet rolls, pastries.
- Avoid gas-forming foods such as brussel sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, onions, cucumbers, and sauerkraut.
- Avoid getting extremely hungry.
- Avoid highly seasoned and spicy foods.
- Avoid large meals. Instead, snack as often as every 1-2 hours during the day and drink plenty of fluids.
- Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke.
- Avoid taking medications for morning sickness. If you do, consult a doctor first.
- Bake, boil or broil foods rather than fry foods.
- Drink liquids between meals rather than with meals.
- Eat dry cereal or crackers before getting out of bed.
- Eat ice chips, popsicles, fruits and cooked vegetables between meals.
- Eat small meals, more often, on a regular basis.
- Eating foods high in protein and complex carbohydrates, such as peanut butter on apple slices or celery; cheese; crackers; milk; cottage cheese; and yogurt.
- Have lots of fresh air in rooms where you sleep and where you prepare your meals to reduce odors.
- Lemons: drinking lemonade, smelling lemons, or just a small taste of lemon
- Peppermint (scotch mints),peppermint essential oil, or sipping the tea (look for Pregnancy Tea) can help curb nausea. It's also known to help with sagging energy levels.
- Sip water and juices slowly.
- Take your prenatal vitamins at night. Increase vitamin B6 in your diet by eating whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes. Talk to your doctor about possibly taking vitamin B6 supplements.
- Two fingers pressed firmly but gently on the your belly button, just for a minute, may stop the nausea.
- Using an all natural toothpaste
- When you feel morning sicknessted, bland foods like gelatin, broth, ginger ale, and saltine crackers can soothe your stomach.
Call your doctor if:
- Morning sickness does not improve, despite trying home remedies.
- You vomit blood or material that looks like coffee grounds. (Call IMMEDIATELY.)
- You lose more than 2 pounds.
- You vomit more than 3 times per day or you cannot keep food or liquid down.
- morning sickness and vomiting continue beyond your 4th month of pregnancy. This happens to some women and is usually normal, but have it checked out.
What can your doctor do?
Your doctor will perform a physical examination, including a pelvic exam, and look for any signs of dehydration.
Your doctor may ask questions like the following:
- Are you only nauseous or do you also vomit?
- Does the morning sickness and vomiting occur every day?
- Does it last throughout the day?
- Can you keep down any food or fluid?
- Have you been traveling?
- Has your schedule been disrupted?
- Are you emotionally stressed?
- What foods have you been eating?
- Do you smoke?
- What have you done to try to feel better?
- Do you know for sure that you are pregnant?
- If not, is it possibly that you are pregnant? For example, do you menstruate and are you sexually active? Have you missed any birth control pills or not used your birth control method?
- What other symptoms do you have -- headaches, abdominal pain, breast tenderness, dry mouth, excessive thirst, unintentional weight loss?

MS is for the birds! I am nauseous all day long. Even my bed or chair pressing up against my back or side makes me want to throw up. I've tried everything it feels like. I get through my days by munching on salt and vinegar chips, sucking on suckers or popsicles, wearing the sea bands, avoiding most foods (and sadly my toothbrush more than I would like...oh so hard for my anal retentive about hygiene side), moving slowly, getting tons of rest, avoiding heat, weekly acupuncture and now am on diclectin (I'm in Canada)...all this and I am still throwing up once a day, usually before bed. I so pray this will taper off soon. aznbuttrfly -

feeling like i'm getting a late dose of MS. i had bad ms for the 1st trimester with my 1st son. this time around i didn't even find out i was preggo until 17 wks and i didn't have any MS up until them. but nowadays, ugh...the last two mornings i feel like i'm gonna lose my breakfast. i thought it was the semi greasy breakfast i ate yesterday that caused it so i ate a lighter cleaner breakfast this AM and i feel naseous again. i'm at work so i tried lying down in my car w/the AC on (helped yesterday) to clear it up today and still no luck. This is no fun. I don't want MS this late in the game (i'm 20 wks now). after throwing up i'm on constant standby to feel my baby move so I know i didn't hurt him. (sigh)...praying it's a short phase. pvgirl -

I'm sorry to hear...I've been told phenergan is completely safe. Anything they're not telling us? It caused gi side effects but that's all for me. I know my first two kids I avoided meds at almost any cost during pregnancy, even when told they were 'safe'.
Nothing else really helped my ms but I do always get sea bands and wear them just in case they help some. pvgirl -

I had hg with my last pregnancy and took phenegram and it caused complications. Resulting in the death of my daughter. So I am leary of taking meds. I even have been trying herbal remedies. Nothing works I think I have hg again. But I'm so frightened because of my past experiences. Swimming helps I have noticed but its getting outta bed to do it. Lol thanks for the support. It helps. :) backfourmore -

Staying hydrated is important. I had HG last pregnancy and was prescribed phenergan suppositories. They definitely helped. This pregnancy, the ms isn't as severe but my OB prescribed orally disintegrating Zofran. Definitely helps too. pvgirl -

Morning sickness is the worst part of being pregnant! Not a whole lot that can be done about it..some things work & some things don't or just momentarily..it all depends on your body. Take it from me I had 2 girls and I had morning sickness all 9 months!!! I was extremely sick. with my son I only had it for 3 months..I believe I'm having another boy because I'm not extremely sick & may vomit once a day or feel nausiated all day. But I did get a prescription for odestron which helps. But word of the wise if you are vomiting all day long and can't hold anything down and I mean anything..everything u stick in ur mouth comes up to go to the ER. luckysmom -

I am 13 weeks pregnant. The first few weeks I was experiencing a lot of morning sickness, but now it has transformed into all-day sickness and nausea! I can't keep anything down and the slightest odor sends me running to the trash can ALL DAY! Once I force myself to eat something, I feel better but I get nauseous just thinking about food. Any ideas for how to curb this?? Thanks! JBaum -

Hi Ladies - Here is a trick for M/S - Gravol all organic ginger. It's mad eby gravol, but there isn't actually any gravol in it. It's just a 500mg dosage of ginger root. Before I trie dthat, I was puking everyday ALL day long. Waking up all night puking. I lost 8 lbs in total ( I can't afford to lose any more weight). Now, I only get sick maybe once a day. Also make sure your body doesn't over heat. That can make m/s MUCH worse. (And in this hot summer weather it's unbareable). Good luck to all of you! happilyexpectinginboston -

Well be it a stomach bug or ms, I don't know which, but I feel aweful! Sent DH to the store for some of the things that are suggested here and elsewhere, lemons, soda crackers, fruit for smoothies, yogurt. If it doesn't work I'll try sea bands tomorrow. Off to lay down now. It seems to be my only relief. *kimmie* -

Hi Ladies, I wanted to share my trick for nausea. Sea Bands, my doctor mentioned them to me and they really helped me out a lot. I got them at a local drug store for about $9 and wore them on each wrist from morning to night to keep the nausea away. I haven't been nauseated for a few days but i still carry them in my purse just in case. I hope this helps someone, Good luck ladies!!! charcharsuperstar -

Hi all i am 3 weeks pregnant, just found out recently. Wasn’t expecting this, but was pleasantly surprised. I thought i’d been food poisoned with the throwing up, lol! Im really nervous about my pregnancy! Not sure what to expect… well except for the morning sickness!hehe. I’m trying to ignore it as much as I can… but its getting worse! Im starting to find work difficult. But I’ve decide not to take medication for it. I’ve tried very cold diet coke, since its caffine free… but it just gives me gas! A friend mentioned ice lolly’s for sickness… they apparently help with sickness… and its natural… let see, need to research it! Take care mothers to be xxx!

Wow, not a lot of new comments! Well, I made it, week 11 and finally starting to feel better. I ended up finding that Kefir yogurt drinks and balance Bars worked great, and Unisom at night. For some reason, Unisom, which is a sleep aid, also helps with prego nausea. Mostly it worked, sometimes it didn't, but when it did, I was so grateful! But it of course makes you tired so if I took any during the day I took half or quarter. divrgurl13 -

I am 10 weeks today and have been nauseous since about week 7. I can only eat lunch! If I eat breakfast or dinner it comes right up and if I eat dinner, I'm up all night long. So in addition to the extreme exhaustion I've already felt, I am even more tired because I am up vomitting all night!
