Many women experience round ligament pain during their pregnancy. Typically, round ligament pain is noticed in the second trimester-but it can occur in early and late stages of the pregnancy as well. The pain is felt in the lower abdomen and groin area. There are two cord-like muscles located at the top of the uterus that extend through the abdominal wall and end in the vulva. The round ligaments are made of the same smooth muscle tissue that the uterus is made of. Throughout pregnancy, the round ligaments will stretch and grow with the growing uterus and this can cause pain for the mother. You might experience the pain on one side or both sides.
Round ligament pain is usually worse when you walk or suddenly change positions in the bed. However, you might also notice the pain for no apparent reason. The pain associated with round ligament syndrome is a sharp, cramping or stretching pain along one of the ligaments. Rather than making abrupt and sudden position changes, try getting up slowly to prevent the stretching pains.
Round ligament pain that is not accompanied by any other symptom is not dangerous to you or your baby. Although the sharp, jabbing pain should be brief, applying a heating pad on low heat, resting and taking Tylenol can help to relieve the pain. If the pain is accompanied with nausea, diarrhea, fever, bleeding, urination trouble or contractions you should call your doctor immediately. The pain could be a symptom of another condition that your doctor may want to check.

I am 14 weeks and have had this for the past few weeks now, on and off. I suffer especially at night when I sleep on my sides. I have had a chest infection the past week, and it has been burning in my right thigh and now even left side of my little bump each time I cough. So glad to put a name to the problem and know it is normal, but boy it’s so uncomfortable at night!

I am 9 weeks and 2 days pregnant today, and earlier today I'm pretty sure I experienced round ligament pain... I got up fairly fast, and it felt as if the lower, right side of my abdomen got ripped or stretched WAY too fast. It was a really sharp, unbearable pain that instantly caused me to keel over. When I keeled over, the pain was gone in an instant, and when I slowly tried to stand back up, the pain was still gone. I wrote a little more about it with more details as well as what happened after, if anyone is interested in reading my blog titled 'Crying over nothing & Round ligament pain?'. Input and comments would be great, especially if you think this could be something else, or maybe you have experienced something similar??

OMG I found it damn this is back I had this when I was pregnant in 08' with dd I had it a lil while in the begining but its way more pronounced guess the muscles were too lax idk however towards the end of my preg wit dd my hips had even begun to lock funny thing is with my first two pregnancies I didn't have this at all. Every preg is def diff as long as this pain doesn't bother baby n at the end of this 9month journey my 3 baby girls have a healthy happy (baby) sibling it was all well worth it.
