Twins:IdenticalDo identical twins look alike?
About one-third of all twin births are identical.
Identical twins are formed from one fertilized egg that splits into two identical halves after conception. These halves will develop separately. This separation can occur up to the 12th day of conception, around the time the egg is implanting in the uterus. The biological mechanisms that prompt the single fertilized egg to split in two remain a mystery. Identical twins share 100% of their DNA and are always the same sex. They have similar hand and foot prints, but different prints and teeth marks. Each identical child will have the same chromosomes and many of the same physical attributes. Identical twins will also share the same blood type, eye and hair color. Identical twins: Variations
There are different variations of identical twins which is determined by when the zygote splits:
Split occurs several days after the yolk sac formation:
Twins share placenta, chorionic and amnionic sac
Split occurs before the yolk sac is formed:
Each twin has his/her own placenta
Split occurs a day or two after yoke sac formation:
Twins share placenta and chorionic sac but have their own amniotic sac
Some identical twins are known as mirror twins. Mirror twins are identical twins with opposite features. One twin may be right-handed and the other left-; mirrored hair curls, etc. This condition is comparatively rare in humans. It results from a late split of the fertilized egg at around 9-12 days. One mirror may have situs invertus, where some or all of the organs are on the opposite side of the body, such as the heart on the right. These conditions are usually associated with a higher incidence of other birth defects. Comments: Twins - Identical

I had Identical Twin boys on July 24, 2008. They are monochorionic twins. They perfectly healthy and growing fast. I am just egzausted. We don't get much sleep. There is no napping during the day for me as I have a 28mth old toddler and he is trying to wean himself off napping, and even if he does nap, the twins are usually awake. Well at least someone is always awake. I feel like I'm at my witts end. I'm sooo egzausted. Plus all three have a cold for the last three weeks and still counting. Therefore, sleeping at night is very seldom. Oh, I can't wait till the they sleep all the way through. Hopefully very soon. If anyone wants some advice on what have having newborn twins is like, please feel free to write me. Things are great with my boys, except the lack of sleep. barefootandpregnant
