Weight Gain
What is your BMI?
Bodyweight And Bmi Calculator

Maintain A Healthy Weight
Being either overweight or underweight can interfere with fertility. One of the best ways to determine if you are over- or underweight is by evaluating your Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared (kg/m2). If math is not your thing, don`t panic! Check out the BMI tables at www.asrm.org/Patients/FactSheets/ weightfertility.pdf and www.consumer.gov/weightloss/bmi.htm. They`ve already done the math and metric conversions for you. Another good measure is body fat or skinfold thickness, but it requires the use of a caliper by a health-care provider or in a gym. Body fat is measured in percentages. Normal body fat is between 22 and 25 percent for women, and 15 to 18 percent for men.
If You`re Overweight, Try To Lose Some Weight.
Extra weight in a woman can increase insulin levels, which may cause the ovaries to overproduce male hormones and stop releasing eggs. Being overweight also contributes to the development of diabetes, a risk factor for infertility. Fat can also produce hormone changes, which can affect ovulation in women and sperm production in men. Women with a BMI over 27 kg/m2 or those whose body fat levels are 10 to 15 percent above normal may be at increased risk of anovulatory infertility and miscarriage. Those with a BMI of over 30 may have polycystic ovarian syndrome, a serious risk factor for infertility. Obese women are at high risk for many serious pregnancy complications such as gestational diabetes and preeclampsia, a potentially deadly condition that is one of the leading causes of maternal and infant mortality. Obesity during pregnancy can also increase the risk of miscarriage and birth defects in babies. Do not diet during pregnancy. Sudden weight loss can cause hormonal imbalances, which may in turn cause infertility. A recent study found that men who have high BMIs (over 25) are at increased risk of infertility due to DNA fragmentation in their sperm. The higher the weight, the greater the reduction in sperm quality. The study found that the partners of overweight men not only had a decreased chance of conception, those who did become pregnant were at increased risk of miscarriage. The problems were most pronounced in men with a BMI of over 30.
If You`re Underweight, Try To Healthily Gain Some Weight.
Women with BMIs under 17 kg/m2 or whose body fat levels are 10 to 15 percent below normal are at increased risk of anovulatory infertility. Anorectic and bulimic women are at especially high risk of having fertility problems. Make sure that you are consuming enough calories every day and eating a variety of foods. Exercise in moderation is perfectly safe, but extreme exercise can be a cause of infertility.

Note 1: Research shows that women who gain more than the recommended amount during pregnancy have a higher chance of being obese 10 years later.
Note 2: Smoking and drinking cause low birth weights too. If you drink/smoke AND don't gain enough weight during pregnancy you should seriously consider changing your lifestyle immediately.
Note 3: We didn't find a weekly reccommendation for weight gain with twins. When you're having twins you should gain more than normal, about 35-45 pounds. If you're overweight you should gain less than when you're underweight. When you have a normal weight you should gain about 1.7 pounds/week in the 2nd & 3rd trimester.
Eating for two and delivery pain
It is quite wrong to assume that the larger the baby at birth, the healthier it will be. The weight of the baby should be about three to three and a half kg. at birth. If the weight is more than that, delivery might be painful for the mother. Such a child will also be covered with unnecessary fat and
watery tissue, which is really waste matter and an impediment to health.
A proper diet during pregnancy is the most important factor for not only having a painless childbirth but also for giving birth to a healthy baby. The idea of `eating for two`, which is so prevalent today, is absurd and it leads to overeating, resulting in an unusually, heavy baby.
I am NOT overweight!
(1) The skeleton typically accounts for quite a small amount of total body weight.
For instance, bone weight in a female of 160 pounds is about 19.2 pounds.
If you think you have a heavy bone framework take 10 pounds off your weight and try the BMI calculation again.
(2) -very- muscular people may fall into the “overweight” category when they are actually healthy and fit.
You probably know for yourself if you are -very- muscular or not.
(3) In 1998, the U.S. National Institutes of Health brought U.S. definitions into line with WHO guidelines, lowering the normal/overweight cut-off from BMI 27.8 to BMI 25. This had the effect of redefining approximately 30 million Americans, previously `technically healthy` to `technically overweight`
(4) The latest data from the National Center for Health Statistics show that
30 percent of U.S. adults 20 years of age and older -over 60 million people- are obese. [http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/obesity/]
In 1998, over 61% of adult Americans were either overweight or obese.
HELPFUL HINTS
- Eat meals at regular times. You may want to eat
smaller, more frequent meals.
- Eat slowly and chew your food well.
- Drink your fluids between meals rather than at
meal time. This may keep you from feeling
`stuffed` and prevent nausea.
- If you are gaining weight too quickly, snack on
nutritious foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables
instead of high calorie potato chips, candy
and pop.
- If you are not gaining enough weight, eat more
foods containing milk and milk products such as
ice cream, pudding, milkshakes, cheese & crackers.

Before I got pregnant, I was barely able to stay at 100pounds. Now, at 31 weeks, I've gained exactly 30pounds! With 9 weeks to go, is this too much weight gain?? I'm 5ft3in. I've luckily been able to fit in my pre-baby clothes nicely until a few weeks ago (Thank goodness for those stretchy pants and hubby's t-shirts!) biancalee84 -

Tipsycherry I personally think that weight is nothing! With my first I put on almost 30Kgs and with my second I put on 15kgs yet found it harder to lose afterwards! This time around im almost 14 weeks and have already put on 2kgs so hoping to keep it to an absolute minimum :) Tipsycherry -

As a first time mother, I was horrified at how much weight I gained. I felt so unnattractive and my low self esteem affected my marriage. It took me a little over a year to lose the 45 pounds that I gained. With my seond pregnancy, I was determined to do as much research as I could to find out how I could minimise my weight gain, and how to lose it quickly without neglecting my baby. I found an amazing book that helped me a lot. I only gained 15 pounds and lost it within two months of giving birth. Check it out http://6bd25mijmsapbnbf5cm9qnt83e.hop.clickbank.net/ bananabum -

Well I can see it's been 2 months from my last post on here about my weight gain and the good news is I'm at 207 which is less than a pound a week. Realistically that's 37lbs gained at 35 weeks which I'm not gonna beat myself up about. I'm also not killing myself if I really want a honey crueller but for the most part, sticking to healthy choices.... though it's really easy to suck back a gallon of milk every 2 days, can't quit that! I look pretty good other than the extra belly still left from my weight loss previously which just kind of sits below my baby bump. Trust me, I hate it enough that it WILL be gone after this baby, no matter how hard I have to work! Hope you all are feeling well, 4 more weeks to go! chantelle55 -

Hey guys, I'm gonna let you in on my little secret. This was a great reference I used when getting pregnany because with my 1st, I gained 50 lbs and after using 'Pregnancy without Pounds' with my 2nd child, I only gained 35lbs and it was so much easier to shed the excess weight afterwards. I liked it so much, I saved it in my favorites! Check it out!

Ugh the last thing I need is for any more fat to go to my butt or thighs I was telling DH yesterday before I was PG w/ DS I had a big butt and nvr imagined it would get bigger and it did I said is my butt gonna grow again lmao I do not want that to happen anymore lol. It's funny how pregnancy works I've had my appetite under control for a while...now that I'm pregnant again I have to stop myself from sitting and eating an entire bag of baked lays lol ugh but I'm soooo hungry lissie *team blue* -

i rememeber learning in my womens health class that we store a little extra fat on our thighs butt when prego naturally. This is to provide us the calories it takes to bf. So I think it's only natural to put a little weight on to this area. When we are doing what's beast by chosing foods low in sugar and fat and by exercising try not to worry. I was gaining too much and my doc said to cut my portion size down by 15%. I didn't listen and gained too much but the idea was good. I'm still working off the last 15 pounds. GOod luck to you all! bananabum -

Mama that's wonderful news! I've always been 230-250 and got to 165-170 before the pregnancy with healthy diet and a very active lifestyle which I grew to love (not to mention my new body!) And I'm 5'9'. I'm pushing 200lbs now and I think its more mental than anything but my thighs and hips have taken the hit the hardest. I guess it shows more this time around because I started out thinner. I know I'll lose it after, just always wanted that nice preggo belly to wear with a bikini without all the extra lumps and hangy stuff :( oh well, all that matters is baby's strong as ever! And I've gotten back to a very healthy diet so hopefully that slows the gaining for the next 3 months! mama2LT -

I had dr appointment yesterday and I'm already up 30 lbs. Gained 10 lbs in a month. I'm 2 days away from starting week 30. My weight is on my thighs and butt. My thighs look nasty. This is my 5 th pregnancy and with my last I gained 28 lbs. With the other 3 pregnancies ive gained from 35-48 lbs. And its hard dropping that weight even though I workout, breast feed, and watch what I've eaten. I do end up loosing the weight but takes about 8 months. I carry only 34-36 weeks. And if I only have 4-6 weeks to go I hope not to gain more than 5 more lbs. I'm going to continue my walking but going to watch more closely what I eat. Exchanging sweets with yogurt. And lighter dinner. No seconds. Nothing drastic. I know those oreos and going out to eat more didn't help. Lol bananabum -

Hey ladies, I need help. This is my second. I was quite overweight before and after my first baby. I had lost 70 lbs pre 2nd pregnancy with a VERY healthy lifestyle and by running 5km per day and a rigid weight training program twice a week. (which I LOVE) I know it sounds silly but I had to give up working out when I became pregnant because I lack the self control to 'tone it down' and was worried I'd overdo it. I also started eating whatever I felt like which hasn't worked out well. My BMI was perfect when I started and I actually looked a little thin, so I welcomed the first 5-8lbs, but now I'm up to 30 and just about to start my 3rd trimester. I wouldn't care about the number if my thighs, saddlebags and bum weren't so gross, and we're going to Jamaica in a month. I just wanted to show off a huge pregnant belly in a modest bikini!
So I've gone back to a gallon of water each day, cutting out salt and processed sugars, and eating only fresh foods. I'm going to try and walk 3-5km per day to control this gaining. Do I sound vain? Am I being ridiculous? I know I can lose it again pp, I just am so disappointed I've let my beautiful preggo body become not so beautiful :( Monika80 -

My cousin recently told me about the program at http://savingmorethanbefore.com At her recommendation I signed up for their sampler program and I have to share the amazing results with everyone. Using this program last night for the first time, my husband and I had an overflowing cart of groceries and non food general items. In all it rang up to $538.16 but thanks to this program we only paid $ 32.88! We weren't the only ones shocked, the cashier's mouth dropped. It is literally about paying pennies on the dollar for everything! rbarr123@hotmail.com -

It's been a month and I've started to lose weight again. It's slow but happy I'm losing. I lost 3-4 pounds and have run 8X this past month. I supposed to run 12X but busy, ill, out of town, no one to watch my 3 little ones etc etc. I'm still working at it. I wish I didn't gain so much but nothing I can do but lose it now, right? -25 till I'm satisfied and -30 would be a dream come true! talks1nmaths -

For anyone considering running to lose weight either to reach a healthier weight before TTC, or post-partum, I recommend it 100%. When I was pregnant with my DD, I gained 65 pounds and went from being a super healthy, competitive runner (5'4 and 126) to overweight, and unable to wear any of my clothes 6 weeks pp. I lost 27 pounds during that 6 weeks, which was shockingly disappointing since I'd convinced myself that at least 15-20 pounds of the weight HAD to be water (wrong), and my size 4-6 figure was suddenly a 14. I began running again at 6 weeks pp, and over the course of 9 months managed to get my weight down to 136... which was 10 lbs shy of my pre-pregnancy weight, but still healthy and I was running great again. With my second pregnancy, I actually continued to run for 35 weeks (which was ok because I had more than 10 years of competitive long distance running), and gained 34 pounds. I lost all of it by continuing running starting 4 weeks pp, over the course of only 5 months. Nine months and five months might seem like a long time, but it was worth it, way worth it. Running releases endorphines which make you feel good, and the process of losing weight and trying on clothes in smaller sizes is exciting too! It can be a slow process, so you have to be patient, and have to incorporate some diet modifications, too. That doesn't necessarily mean restricting everything 'bad', but learning to use it as a 'treat' rather than a normal part of your regular eating habits. After a while, I found that I preferred healthy food to junk food... which probably sounds crazy.
So... if you're considering running... DO IT. If you need support, message me. I helped my husband lose nearly 30 pounds by running, and he recently ran a half marathon in 2:00:32, which isn't bad for someone who previously wasn't even able to run a mile without being out of breath.
You can do it. :-) lissie *team blue* -

So I gained of the 49 pounds I gained I have only lost 20ish. I haven't lost weight in 6 weeks now... since I wasn't quite at my goal weight either when I conceived I have about at least 30 to lose and it would be nice to lose 35. I am starting the running program next week b/c I found a running partner :) I need the support system right now to just get started. Good luck to all of you. Hope you can have a more ideal weight gain and healthy pregnancies! lissie *team blue* -

Thank you :) I also just found out yesterday that my doctor thinks that being overweight is even worse for me than the high impact things like eliptical and even eventually maybe jogging! ( He said do what it takes to lose the weight. I have severe prolapse and also a moderate of the bladder :( But he thinks if i lose 30+ pounds that it will help :) I am going to start Monday since I have clearance to do so! I'll probably report how I'm doing here just to keep myself accountable. GOod luck to the rest of you :)
