Weight Gain

Weight Gain

What is your BMI?

Bodyweight And Bmi Calculator

Maintain A Healthy Weight
Being either overweight or underweight can interfere with fertility. One of the best ways to determine if you are over- or underweight is by evaluating your Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared (kg/m2). If math is not your thing, don`t panic! Check out the BMI tables at www.asrm.org/Patients/FactSheets/ weightfertility.pdf and www.consumer.gov/weightloss/bmi.htm. They`ve already done the math and metric conversions for you. Another good measure is body fat or skinfold thickness, but it requires the use of a caliper by a health-care provider or in a gym. Body fat is measured in percentages. Normal body fat is between 22 and 25 percent for women, and 15 to 18 percent for men.

If You`re Overweight, Try To Lose Some Weight.
Extra weight in a woman can increase insulin levels, which may cause the ovaries to overproduce male hormones and stop releasing eggs. Being overweight also contributes to the development of diabetes, a risk factor for infertility. Fat can also produce hormone changes, which can affect ovulation in women and sperm production in men. Women with a BMI over 27 kg/m2 or those whose body fat levels are 10 to 15 percent above normal may be at increased risk of anovulatory infertility and miscarriage. Those with a BMI of over 30 may have polycystic ovarian syndrome, a serious risk factor for infertility. Obese women are at high risk for many serious pregnancy complications such as gestational diabetes and preeclampsia, a potentially deadly condition that is one of the leading causes of maternal and infant mortality. Obesity during pregnancy can also increase the risk of miscarriage and birth defects in babies. Do not diet during pregnancy. Sudden weight loss can cause hormonal imbalances, which may in turn cause infertility. A recent study found that men who have high BMIs (over 25) are at increased risk of infertility due to DNA fragmentation in their sperm. The higher the weight, the greater the reduction in sperm quality. The study found that the partners of overweight men not only had a decreased chance of conception, those who did become pregnant were at increased risk of miscarriage. The problems were most pronounced in men with a BMI of over 30.

If You`re Underweight, Try To Healthily Gain Some Weight.
Women with BMIs under 17 kg/m2 or whose body fat levels are 10 to 15 percent below normal are at increased risk of anovulatory infertility. Anorectic and bulimic women are at especially high risk of having fertility problems. Make sure that you are consuming enough calories every day and eating a variety of foods. Exercise in moderation is perfectly safe, but extreme exercise can be a cause of infertility.

Check Your Bmi:
Metric
Height in meters e.g. 1.78
kg before pregnancy e.g.65

English
Height in feet e.g. 5
plus how many inches e.g. 4
lbs before pregnancy e.g. 130

Twins - gain 35-45 pounds - -

Note 1: Research shows that women who gain more than the recommended amount during pregnancy have a higher chance of being obese 10 years later.

Note 2: Smoking and drinking cause low birth weights too. If you drink/smoke AND don't gain enough weight during pregnancy you should seriously consider changing your lifestyle immediately.

Note 3: We didn't find a weekly reccommendation for weight gain with twins. When you're having twins you should gain more than normal, about 35-45 pounds. If you're overweight you should gain less than when you're underweight. When you have a normal weight you should gain about 1.7 pounds/week in the 2nd & 3rd trimester.

Eating for two and delivery pain
It is quite wrong to assume that the larger the baby at birth, the healthier it will be. The weight of the baby should be about three to three and a half kg. at birth. If the weight is more than that, delivery might be painful for the mother. Such a child will also be covered with unnecessary fat and watery tissue, which is really waste matter and an impediment to health. A proper diet during pregnancy is the most important factor for not only having a painless childbirth but also for giving birth to a healthy baby. The idea of `eating for two`, which is so prevalent today, is absurd and it leads to overeating, resulting in an unusually, heavy baby.

I am NOT overweight!
(1) The skeleton typically accounts for quite a small amount of total body weight. For instance, bone weight in a female of 160 pounds is about 19.2 pounds. If you think you have a heavy bone framework take 10 pounds off your weight and try the BMI calculation again.

(2) -very- muscular people may fall into the “overweight” category when they are actually healthy and fit. You probably know for yourself if you are -very- muscular or not.

(3) In 1998, the U.S. National Institutes of Health brought U.S. definitions into line with WHO guidelines, lowering the normal/overweight cut-off from BMI 27.8 to BMI 25. This had the effect of redefining approximately 30 million Americans, previously `technically healthy` to `technically overweight`

(4) The latest data from the National Center for Health Statistics show that 30 percent of U.S. adults 20 years of age and older -over 60 million people- are obese. [http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/obesity/] In 1998, over 61% of adult Americans were either overweight or obese. HELPFUL HINTS
  • Eat meals at regular times. You may want to eat smaller, more frequent meals.
  • Eat slowly and chew your food well.
  • Drink your fluids between meals rather than at meal time. This may keep you from feeling `stuffed` and prevent nausea.
  • If you are gaining weight too quickly, snack on nutritious foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables instead of high calorie potato chips, candy and pop.
  • If you are not gaining enough weight, eat more foods containing milk and milk products such as ice cream, pudding, milkshakes, cheese & crackers.

I'm currently 18 weeks pregnant. Is anyone having problems w/gaining too much weight? I went to my appointment Friday and I gained 12lbs!!! I about freaked out. The nurse said it's probably fluid. I don't think I can gain that much fluid in a month. It's all I've thought about. I just want to stop eating completely but I know I can't.

hanakalei - 181 days ago.
babytimbit - Do not worry.....im now 17 weeks and have gained a total of 16 lbs!! My doc said that its ok because it is all in my belly. She said to watch and if you start gaining weight in your face, legs, arms, hands, and feet then you are gaining too much! So no need to worry if its all in your belly :)

babytimbit - 181 days ago.
Hi ladies, this is my frist pregnancy, i am 5-6 weeks pregnant and have already gained 7 lbs. I find this alot. The majority of my pants still fit although they fit very snug now. I feel that this is alot to gain. I am 5'2 and normally weigh 128lbs.

ashleysthird - 184 days ago.

dazieoo - 185 days ago.
My sister gained 80 lbs with her first pregnancy.. and she swears it was the juice... she ate healthy.. but was craving ice cold juice all the time. She lost all the weight before she got pregnant with her second (It took about a year for her).. and then she only gained 25 lbs (No juice =) ). Me on the other hand.. not drinking any juice.... but I've gained almost 50 lbs in 32 weeks =P.. I did quit smoking in the begining.. sooo Im gonna say that accounted for maybe.. 15 lbs? I dunno. It got me real down at first..... then I stopped careing and starting embracing..... but the past week or two things have been jiggeling a LOT more... I wouldnt be surprised if I gained 20 more lbs by the end of all this =P

shortielee17 - 185 days ago.
My weight gain has gotten out of control. I eat several SMALL meals a day and drink a lot of juice and water. I never eat out....but somehow I managed to gain 4 pounds in 2 weeks. I went from 169 to 180 in 23 weeks!! YIKES? Anyone else having pregnancy weight gain blues??? If so, what's your story?

leila08 - 187 days ago.
i envy you guys. I wish I was :(

tlb562 - 193 days ago.
Hanakalei - this is my 1st preg too and I gained a lot the 1st trimester...about 8 -10 lbs. I was nauseous and the only thing that helped was eating. Now I'm 21 weeks and I've only gained about 3 - 5 lbs since and am back on target. My appetite decreased a lot after the 1st trimester. I think it all balances out ;) Good luck.

domevapurple - 199 days ago.

linzigenavieve - 212 days ago.
Has anyone else had a major difference in weight gain in the first trimester with different pregnancies? This is my 4th pregnancy and with the other 3 the most I gained was 3 pounds in the first 12 weeks. I'm only to 7 weeks with this one and have gained 8 pounds already. Does anyone know if it might correlate with the spacing between kids? I have a 4 year gap, a 2 year gap, and then this will be a 1 year gap.

Hanakalei - 214 days ago.
mommy2b-dec16 - Dont feel bad!! This is my first baby as well and i went from being 120-132!!!!! i am 12 weeks and gained 12 lbs!!! I am constantly hungry as well and my pants dont fit anymore!! Im assuming that were not the only ones who feel this way so it cant be wrong i suppose?!

mommy2b-dec16 - 215 days ago.
im 6 1/2 weeks pregnant and i feel fat.. im super bloated, and i went from 106 to 114.2 in 5 weeks... my pants dont fit and im always huingry.. is that wrong.. this is my first baby and i dont know what is going on

Hanakalei - 216 days ago.
domevapurple - What i have always done before i got pregnant was a high lean protein diet, jogging, and yoga! Yoga is great for tightening your inner core stomach muscles back up and the lean protein diet will help you shed pounds and gain muscle! Jogging helps increase your heart rate for faster weight loss as well! I hope that helps :)

domevapurple - 216 days ago.
just give birth already want to loose more weight any body here know about loose weight easy :-)....

military~mommy - 216 days ago.
Jena~ Have you had your gestational diabetes check yet? If you are at risk for GD then rice and orange juice are not really that healthy for you. You would need to adhere to a GD diet and that would help with the weight gain.

tlb562 - 217 days ago.
Hanakalei - I gained 8lbs my 1st trimester. I started at 115lbs and ended at 123lbs. I also didn't have MS but was nauseous which caused me to eat more. I'm 17 weeks now and feel great and have only gained 2 lbs in the last 4 weeks, 10lbs total. It isn't great but I definately feel better. Hopefully the weight gain will slow down for you too. I heard you gain a lot at the end so I was so worried after gaining so much in the beginning.

jenakatessa - 217 days ago.
i am very worried....i was 153 before i got pregnant. I am 5'7......and i am now already 178 and im just over 24 weeks. I dont pig out on junk..i eat rice, i drink healthy orange juice and water, and beer...KIDDDDDDDINGGG....umm and i just dont get whats going on!!!! i feel like a cow:( and i cant even put pants on and take them off without sitting down cuz im in sooo much pain from carrying aroudn this extra weight...if i hit 200 im going to have a nervous breakdown

shortielee17 - 218 days ago.
Has anyone else only gained just a few pounds? I started out at 169 and I am now only 4 pounds heavier? Is that normal? I eat like a cow! My Dr. doesn't seem too concerned.
