Weight Gain

Weight Gain

What is your BMI?

Bodyweight And Bmi Calculator

Maintain A Healthy Weight
Being either overweight or underweight can interfere with fertility. One of the best ways to determine if you are over- or underweight is by evaluating your Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared (kg/m2). If math is not your thing, don`t panic! Check out the BMI tables at www.asrm.org/Patients/FactSheets/ weightfertility.pdf and www.consumer.gov/weightloss/bmi.htm. They`ve already done the math and metric conversions for you. Another good measure is body fat or skinfold thickness, but it requires the use of a caliper by a health-care provider or in a gym. Body fat is measured in percentages. Normal body fat is between 22 and 25 percent for women, and 15 to 18 percent for men.

If You`re Overweight, Try To Lose Some Weight.
Extra weight in a woman can increase insulin levels, which may cause the ovaries to overproduce male hormones and stop releasing eggs. Being overweight also contributes to the development of diabetes, a risk factor for infertility. Fat can also produce hormone changes, which can affect ovulation in women and sperm production in men. Women with a BMI over 27 kg/m2 or those whose body fat levels are 10 to 15 percent above normal may be at increased risk of anovulatory infertility and miscarriage. Those with a BMI of over 30 may have polycystic ovarian syndrome, a serious risk factor for infertility. Obese women are at high risk for many serious pregnancy complications such as gestational diabetes and preeclampsia, a potentially deadly condition that is one of the leading causes of maternal and infant mortality. Obesity during pregnancy can also increase the risk of miscarriage and birth defects in babies. Do not diet during pregnancy. Sudden weight loss can cause hormonal imbalances, which may in turn cause infertility. A recent study found that men who have high BMIs (over 25) are at increased risk of infertility due to DNA fragmentation in their sperm. The higher the weight, the greater the reduction in sperm quality. The study found that the partners of overweight men not only had a decreased chance of conception, those who did become pregnant were at increased risk of miscarriage. The problems were most pronounced in men with a BMI of over 30.

If You`re Underweight, Try To Healthily Gain Some Weight.
Women with BMIs under 17 kg/m2 or whose body fat levels are 10 to 15 percent below normal are at increased risk of anovulatory infertility. Anorectic and bulimic women are at especially high risk of having fertility problems. Make sure that you are consuming enough calories every day and eating a variety of foods. Exercise in moderation is perfectly safe, but extreme exercise can be a cause of infertility.

Check Your Bmi:
Metric
Height in meters e.g. 1.78
kg before pregnancy e.g.65

English
Height in feet e.g. 5
plus how many inches e.g. 4
lbs before pregnancy e.g. 130

Twins - gain 35-45 pounds - -

Note 1: Research shows that women who gain more than the recommended amount during pregnancy have a higher chance of being obese 10 years later.

Note 2: Smoking and drinking cause low birth weights too. If you drink/smoke AND don't gain enough weight during pregnancy you should seriously consider changing your lifestyle immediately.

Note 3: We didn't find a weekly reccommendation for weight gain with twins. When you're having twins you should gain more than normal, about 35-45 pounds. If you're overweight you should gain less than when you're underweight. When you have a normal weight you should gain about 1.7 pounds/week in the 2nd & 3rd trimester.

Eating for two and delivery pain
It is quite wrong to assume that the larger the baby at birth, the healthier it will be. The weight of the baby should be about three to three and a half kg. at birth. If the weight is more than that, delivery might be painful for the mother. Such a child will also be covered with unnecessary fat and watery tissue, which is really waste matter and an impediment to health. A proper diet during pregnancy is the most important factor for not only having a painless childbirth but also for giving birth to a healthy baby. The idea of `eating for two`, which is so prevalent today, is absurd and it leads to overeating, resulting in an unusually, heavy baby.

I am NOT overweight!
(1) The skeleton typically accounts for quite a small amount of total body weight. For instance, bone weight in a female of 160 pounds is about 19.2 pounds. If you think you have a heavy bone framework take 10 pounds off your weight and try the BMI calculation again.

(2) -very- muscular people may fall into the “overweight” category when they are actually healthy and fit. You probably know for yourself if you are -very- muscular or not.

(3) In 1998, the U.S. National Institutes of Health brought U.S. definitions into line with WHO guidelines, lowering the normal/overweight cut-off from BMI 27.8 to BMI 25. This had the effect of redefining approximately 30 million Americans, previously `technically healthy` to `technically overweight`

(4) The latest data from the National Center for Health Statistics show that 30 percent of U.S. adults 20 years of age and older -over 60 million people- are obese. [http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/obesity/] In 1998, over 61% of adult Americans were either overweight or obese. HELPFUL HINTS
  • Eat meals at regular times. You may want to eat smaller, more frequent meals.
  • Eat slowly and chew your food well.
  • Drink your fluids between meals rather than at meal time. This may keep you from feeling `stuffed` and prevent nausea.
  • If you are gaining weight too quickly, snack on nutritious foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables instead of high calorie potato chips, candy and pop.
  • If you are not gaining enough weight, eat more foods containing milk and milk products such as ice cream, pudding, milkshakes, cheese & crackers.

I am 32 weeks preg and have gained a total of 8 lbs for entire pregnancy so far. Well dr was concerned so much about my low weight gain that i was able to get an u/s yesterday, yeah! My baby weighs at 32 weeks 5 lbs and 4 oz's. Needless to say we were both shocked. Especially since i havent gained much and Im not even showing big. I think the reason why I only gained 8 lbs is that I had gastric bypass surgery 4 yrs ago and not able to eat good. although i talk to other moms that had the same surgery and they have packed on the weight. well either way im glad that i have gained a whole lot and apparently its not bothering her any since she's so big. lol. hopefully she wont get much bigger b/c i really dont want to have a BIG baby even though its in my family to have big ones.

happyforest - 261 days ago.
jlevine- ya, you will lose it all!! the baby will probly be at least 7 which leaves only 10 and when you count fluid and the placenta that doesnt really leave anything to loose except maybe a pound or two!!

ermsmom - 262 days ago.
I'm 19 +5 weeks and I haven't gained any weight. Every now and then the scale goes up a pound but the next time I weigh myself it's back down. I think it's a bit strange that I haven't gained at all but after my last one I know that it mainly came on in the end. I know that I'm eating enough and I'm exercising but not enough to kill myself. If I haven't put anything on 10 weeks from now then I'll be really nervous!

jlevine - 262 days ago.
i am 33 almost 34 weeks pregnant and have gained only 17 pounds and am going to deliver at 38 weeks by induction..... due to having to travel over the easter holiday. what do you think the chances are that i will lose all my baby weight?

KayandRysMoM - 262 days ago.
I only gained 13-14 lbs during my entire pregnancy and i delivered at 39.5 weeks. I had a very healthy 6lb 9oz baby and lost all of the weight immediatly.

aussiemumma - 262 days ago.
Well I am currently 24+5 weeks pregnant and have only gained 6 lbs. I was 132lbs before pregnancy and of normal weight. I don't diet at all during pregnancy and eat plenty of good food so I don't know why I haven't gained much weight! I am a little worried but I guess there is nothing much i can do! Has anyone else not put on as much weight as they would like at their stage?

JeneriksBaby - 263 days ago.
I tried that Site and it wouldn;t work for me it keep redirecting me to the home page

mommy to2angels - 263 days ago.
I am 32, 5'5' and pre-preggo 130 lbs. Perfect. I've gained 6 lbs already and I'm 10 weeks pregnant. I am not worried. I am a VERY fit person. When I weighed 115-120lbs(at 25), I was classified as 'underweight'. I fought very hard to put on 10 lbs and KEEP it on! 10 lbs makes a difference! I LOOK so much healthier! So every woman is different. Many things can affect your outcome! You could have wider hips....big BB's and such! Be happy with you and don't worry about your weight while your pregnant unless it will directly result in harming you or your baby. Oh yea.......I've NEVER seen my bum jiggle like this before! WOW, does 6lbs make a difference! And when did my thighs start touching???

ermsmom - 275 days ago.
I found a neat little calculator on another website that tells you how much you should have gained for each week and if you've gained too much or too little. If you want to check it out here's the link http://www.thebabycorner.com/tools/pregnancy/calculators/weightcalculator.php

happyforest - 279 days ago.
i hope i didnt come off wrong in my previous post--- of course if you are overweight and your health is in jeapordy then i can see why you may worry about your weight, but if not then i hate seeing people so down on themselves! pregnancy is a time of beauty, and yes our bodies change and it is hard but it is worth every pound. here is a great site i wanted to share. i hope that everyone goes to it and it helps you realize you arent alone in this journey and that you are beautiful!! www.shapeofamother.com

crazymonkey - 289 days ago.
i am happy. i went to the dr. yesterday (its a GIRL) and im 20 weeks and have gained 11 pnds which is great since that puts me at 196. i am doing a lot better than i thought i would. i have more reason to keep the rest of my life healthy and my weight under control(and get my weight down after hailey gets here)

happyforest - 298 days ago.
i dont think you can go exactly by that calculation. it says im UNDERWEIGHT and dont think i am! i am 5'6' 110 lb and i think it looks good not underwieght.

TabithaDashae - 298 days ago.
OMG it says that Im Overweight. BUt i ONLY Weigh 135 pounds. :( maybe I am

amber-d - 300 days ago.
I have gained too much weight at this point. I am 27 weeks 6 days and gained atleast 30 pounds. I go to the doctor this week and once again am dreading the scale. I am wondering if there is a way to lose some weight at this point (the weight I should not have put on) and still keep the baby healthy? I was not eatting unhealthy but to be honest I got so frustrated about a week ago over this that all this week i have given into every craving because I figure, why not? I'm gaining regardless. I know this is wreckless thinking and don't really want to gain much more if I can help it. I want to be healthy and most of all i want a healthy baby. Please, any suggestions I would appreciate. I am starting to really get down about this! I fear that I am going to get weighed Thursday and just start crying right then and there.

atmnstyl - 300 days ago.
iam at 15 weeks and i have lost 6 pounds so far and i have not been sick yet ......well ian still brestfeeding my 7 mo. old so may be thats why

dinahmite425 - 303 days ago.
well, i an 23 weeks pregnant i have not gained any weight, well my beginning weight was 182 then i wnet down to 174 then i gained 3 pounds and went up to 177 i am currently 177 so i weigh 5 lbs less than when i got pregnant. my first pregnancy i gained 29 pounds during my pregnancy and only about 6 of those lbs stayed on me. My ultrasound statd the baby was exactly what she was supposed to weigh. I dont diet I trully have no appetite i have to make myself eat., but honestly i dont want to gain more than 15-20 lbs at the most, many women think when your pregnant your supposedto eat like a pig to make the baby healthy all you need when your pregnant is 300 extra calories a day, that can be a granola bar and a cup of juice not a gallon of ice cream!!

happyforest - 304 days ago.
girls, dont worry so much!! i gained 40 lb with my baby, he is 2 months old and i am really happy with how i look. i wear a bigger jeans size now, but thats cause of my hip bones, not my belly! i gained about a pound per week. i was 110 pre preg and 150 when he was born!! at his one month appt i was 127 but i dont know what i am now. im not trying to get back to 110, im happy with watever i am. i havent worked out or anything, i dont have time for that! but picking up a heavy baby all day is quite a work out in itself!

baby-griffin - 304 days ago.
I'm almost at month 5 and I've already gained 18lbs, I'm quite worried but I'll know when I go for my next apointment. I'm just hoping that I'll be able to shed these pounds plus the extra after I give birth!

chiibaby - 306 days ago.
Guys!!!!! im only 10 weeks pregnant and ive put on 5lbs already ! is this normal ? :S

MelC82 - 306 days ago.
Well, I have been a little worried lately. I am a petite framed woman and i am on my 2nd pregnancy. My starting weight was at 110 lbs (I am 5'2) tho so I am 'normal.' The only problem is; is that i am already showing and the scale says i have gained 5-6 lbs!!!! I am only in week 9. By the way this is going I am going to double in size. I havent been eating a ton of food so I am not sure why I am gaining so quickly? I didnt show at all with my first until i was 6 months, so this is quite a change for me. : (

lucy01 - 307 days ago.
im 2.5 kgs under what im ment to be :(

hottet1234 - 308 days ago.
yup, I'm week 21, and I've already gained 30 lbs UGGGG . Pre pregnancy is was 136, now I am 165... I can't help it! I'm not eating crappy! Everytime i go to the doctor and they weigh me I want to cry

babyeddiesmom - 308 days ago.
LOL i gained 52-54 lbs with my 1st, but within 3 wks I lost like 35 lbs!!! I am 10 lbs overweight and am pregnant again....I say gain enough that YOU feel appropriate and with alittle walking and healthy food everyday after the baby you will get ur figure back in due time. Enjoy being pregnant and dont worry too much about weight. :)

gladek - 308 days ago.
Unless you are already carrying a lot of extra weight, your doctor needs a reality check. These days, 25-30 lbs is usually the weight gain standard, not 15! Geesh, I am very physiclaly active (former Marine SSgt) I gained almost 40 lbs, remined active throughout, and had my perfectly healthy boy eight weeks ago. I have already lost all but 5 lbs of the weight! I would have a big problem if my doc told me 15 lbs was how much I should have gained!!

ermsmom - 309 days ago.
I'm 13 weeks pregnant and my doctor has advised me not to gain more than 15 lbs. Ugh! I hope I can do it. I'm doing my best to be active and eat well.
