Whats Safe and Unsafe:Foods



Yummy, yummy, yummy!

Eating well balanced meals is important at all times, but it is even more essential when you are pregnant. There are necessary nutrients, vitamins and minerals that your developing baby needs. It's important to know which foods are safe to eat and which you need to avoid while pregnant. Eat a safe pregnancy diet, and learn about safe food storage and handling.

Foods To Avoid:


  • Sushi
  • Raw or undercooked meats
  • Soft cheeses
  • Raw eggs
  • Ceasar dressing (has raw eggs)
  • Mayonnaise (has raw eggs)
  • Unpasteruized egg nog
  • Unpasteurized juices
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Shark
  • Swordfish
  • King mackeral
  • Tilefish
  • Raw shellfish
  • Fish from contaminated water
  • Unpasteurized milk
  • Refrigerated pate
  • UNWASHED vegetables




Foods To Limit:


  • Deli Meat
  • Hot Dogs
  • Tuna fish
  • Salmon
  • Liver (excessive Vitamin A)
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Sweets
  • Processed foods
  • Caffeine




Tips For Safe Food And Drink Consumption:


  • Always wash your hands after preparing food, between foods, and after the restroom
  • Avoid contaminating foods with each other
  • Always use clean utensils and cooking equipment
  • Avoid dented cans
  • Eat or drink only pasteurized products, including apple juice
  • Completely defrost foods, especially meats, prior to cooking
  • Do not refreeze anything that has been defrosted
  • Reheat food only once, then toss it

Ok, im rather confused. In the booklet i got from my midwife it states what safe/ unsafe foods there are for me. Now on here, it says liver should be limited and mayonaise should be avoided.. Now in my booklet which i received Oct 2009 it says Liver should not be eaten atall and should be avoided at all costs as vitamin A is harmful to baby, and aslong as i dont try to make home made mayo (yea like i would) then the stuff from the shops is absoolutely fine but just eat in moderation. Im a tad confused, as its vice versa on this site?...x

kelley82879 - You can have deli meats as long as you heat them. Put it in the microwave until it's steaming. I know it doesn't taste the 'same' but it's better then nothing.As for tuna, you can have tuna as long as it's not every day. I would also avoid ahi since it's usually cooked very rare. But a tuna sandwich is fine. Mayo is also fine. Kraft and all those brands are safe and pasterized. You want to avoid making your own mayo though since it contains raw eggs.

My longest lasting craving thus far in my pregnancy has been toasted tomatoe and cheese sandwiches with ...gasp....Mayo. I asked the doc and he says that the store bought mayo should be fine.
