Spotting:
First trimester

Is there anything my doctor can do for spotting during my first trimester?

Spotting
First trimester
Second trimester
Third trimester
First Trimester Spotting/ Bleeding
Many women will notice some spotting or light bleeding early in pregnancy. Generally, women who experience light bleeding in the first trimester will continue to have a healthy pregnancy. Some spotting can be quite normal and does not pose a threat. However, it can also be a reason for concern. Any spotting or bleeding should be reported your health care provider. Describe the bleeding-color, amount and consistency- and any other signs or symptoms that accompany the bleeding. You can use sanitary pads or panty liners to ptorect your undergarments from any type of spotting or bleeding. Do not use tampons during pregnancy.

Implantation bleeding can occur six to ten days after fertilization. You may notice some light spotting for a day or two. Implantation bleeding happens when the fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus. Because you are actually not pregnant, some women will mistake the light bleeding for a period.

Spotting or bleeding can also be an early sign of a miscarriage. It is imperative that you see your caregiver to determine if there is a problem with the pregnancy. The most frightening type of spotting or bleeding during the first trimester is fresh blood, bright red in color, especially if accompanied by cramping. While this type of spotting or bleeding can be serious, it does not always mean a miscarriage is occuring. Your caregiver will most likely give you an ultrasound to try to determine the cause and see if a miscarriage is likely.

An ectopic pregnancy can be signaled by bleeding in the first trimester. This occurs when the embryo implants somewhere outside of the uterus. Usually the fertilized egg will implant in a fallopian tube. An ectopic pregnancy is much less common than miscarriage. However, an embryo implanted outside the uterus can't develop into a normal baby and it can cause serious internal bleeding. Ectopic pregnancies must be removed to save the life of the mother. Other symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy include abdominal pain, which is usually worse on one side, lightheadedness and an urge to have a bowel movement.

A rare condition, known as a molar pregnancy, can be a cause of spotting also. An abnormal mass forms inside the uterus after fertilization. Bleeding is the most common symptom of a molar pregnancy. However, it is an uncommon cause of bleeding in the first trimester.

When you become pregnant, your body produces extra blood to supply the growing baby. Therefore, your cervix also has an increased blood supply. You may experience light spotting after sexual intercourse or a pelvic exam. This is normal and generally does not pose a threat. Use a panty liner to protect your clothing.

Cervical infections can be a cause of bleeding early in the pregnancy. Your health care provider will do a series of urine and/or blood tests to see what type of infection is causing the spotting. Antibiotics will be given to clear up the infection.

Trauma, such as falls or car accidents, can trigger bleeding. This can cause tears to the vaginal wall or placenta. Placental abruption can be life-threatening. It is very important to report any fall or accident to your doctor if you are pregnant.

While bleeding during the 1st trimester can be common, it is important to remember that whatever type of bleeding occurs, your health care provider should be notified. Most physicians will closely monitor the bleeding and may recommend bedrest in some cases. You should call your health care immediately if the bleeding is heavy, if you experience chills or fever or if you are passing tissue from the vagina. Your doctor will ask lots of questions and will do a pelvic examination to determine the cause of the bleeding. They may also order lab tests and perform an ultrasound.

Hi everyone I am new to this site first I would like to say congrats to everyone that's expecting:) Second I just have a few concerns I found out I was pregnant on April 24 (the say AF was due) so I went to the doctor and they checked my HCG levels and it came back as 461 on 4-28-08 they checked them again and it was 2021 (I have had a previous mc so my doc wants to keep a look out on my levels) Well around 9am on 5-5-08 I stood up at work and felt a gush come out of my private are so I went to the bathroom and it was blood I put on a pad and filled it rather quickly the only reason I wasnt really worried though was because it was like watered down blood like runny. so i went in to the doc's office where they did an us and she saw a sestational sac but nothing else besides a fairly large blood clot which is why I was bleeding. I know it was too early to see much of anything on the u/s. The bleeding stopped after i left teh docs office and they did another blood test which came back at 8,110 so I believe my levels are fine and i think the baby is fine because my breast are still sore and i still get a little nautious and tired as ever!!! When I m/c before I lost all pregnancy symptoms. Has anyone elese ever had a blood clot there and had a healthy baby?? I go for another u/s on 5-17 so I will know for sure then. Please post all comments to my inbox. Thanks to you all:)

Have a question for all...I'm 5 and 3 days and last night while walking around in best buy I started to bleed. Went to the hospital and spent 4 hours there, u/s showed gestational sack and 'yoke' were still there (no heartbeat yet) and they tested hormone levels but sent me home because it was taking so long and they said it was over 1000 and had to run it a second time. Has anyone else had this happen??? I pretty much stopped bleeding by the time I left the hospital and nothing this morning or today so far..... (course I was freaked last night but calmer today)

averysfairytale, I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers!

Went to the Dr this morning. I found out today I have a subchorionic hematoma. It is a bleed in the uterus with the baby which is why I have been bleeding. So I am off work and we are praying that the blood is absorbed and stops growing. We just have to take it a day at a time.

Last week my husband and I went to our 3rd appt. and we had our 2nd ultrasound. 10 weeks and 4 days. We saw the heart beat but did not see the baby move at all! Im concerned! My sister in law is just 2weeks ahead of me and she had an appt at the same week and she saw her baby moving all around. The Dr said he/she may be sleeping. Has this happened to anyone else?

Well, I am seven weeks and am bleeding like crazy. Went to er on Wednesday cause it so heavy like a bad period. Dr was suprised to still see my baby's heartbeat with all of the bleeding. He said he did not know what was causing it but to go back on Monday if it was still there. I have an apopintment on Wednesday for another ultrasound too see if baby is ok. This is my fourth pregnancy and I lost the other three. I am also on progesterone for this one. We are just praying every day. The bleeding stopped yesterday but is back today.

I just wanted to update, as lots of people dont come back and say wha the outcome of the bleed was. I had a scan today and all is absolutely fine. Bubba is 12 weeks and 3 days and very lively. They could see a blood clot there, that they aren't worried about at all. it will either bleed and go away or will be re-absorbed. It could have been caused around the time of implantation time. So, i was very lucky and got a positive outcome from my spotting.

I am 7 weeks preggers and this morning I had a bit of a scare ,this morning woke up and felt a little gush and when I went to the bathroom I had a small amount of redy brown blood and after I wiped I had a bit of brown discharge. Went to the Dr and got some blood work and urine test done and got an appt for an u/s on april 21st . I have had nothing since so I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed but man what a scare!

Hey guys...well, I learned the hard way not to ignore the bleeding. I have been seeing the Dr's about it and they found nothing wrong. I assumed that it was my cervical polyp acting up again...I lost my baby at 14 weeks...it was so sad. The baby literally just fell out of my body...it was so hard to see him laying there lifeless. It was a boy...we miss our son!

I've just had a glob of brown mucus like discharge, I had the same 24 hours ago and nothing inbetween. I'm scared to death I'm miscarrying. I'll 11 and half weeks and have started to notice my symptoms disappearing too. Have a scan tomorrow, but am going insane.

mcallista - 37 days ago.
I started spotting brownish discharge on Wednesday (not much, just some on a pantyliner) but today there is a bit more and it's red. I have an appointment tomorrow morning but i'm sort of freaking out. Should i go to the emergency room in this situation?

eileen126 - 37 days ago.
I am eight weeks and last night I started spotting a brownish colored discharge. Is this a symptom of a miscarriage? I had a miscarriage in July 07 but I don't remember that the color of the discharge was brown. Please help, I am so worried. Since the doctor is closed today I have to wait until tomorrow for them to call me back.

I thought I was 8weeks pregnant as of yesturday, but all week I have been spotting so at my first appointment dr. did a vaginal ultrasound and found the fetal pole and the sac and no hearbeat and determined the baby was only 6 weeks and 3 days. My HCG is 4000, I have to go back on Monday for another HCG Test to see if I go up or down to determine what happens next. This will be my second misscarriage, Im hoping for the best! Anyone have similar situation I have been spotting but not enough to even soak a pad just when I go potty! I had a misscarriage in july 07 and I could tell beause it was like a period, this time its different! The waiting is driving me crazy. Im just ready to know and move on..

mommytobe1 - 38 days ago.
I went to the hospital on wednesday because I had started to spot the day before. At that time I was bleeding a bright red and not too much I also at this time had no cramping. After everything (a pelvic exam and ultasound) it was determined that the baby was still in me and I was ok, my hormomnes was 1936. that night, only 4 hours later I started to cramp really bad and passed a few big clots. I went back to the ER yesterday to find out that I had lost the baby, my hormones was 400. I was suppose to be 8 wks and 1 day on wednesday, but the ultasound determined I was only 6wks 2 days.

SPOTTING FOR 3 WEEKS: hey, I think around 6 weeks into my prenancy I noticed I started spotting but it was never much, not to the point that it would go on my underware. But it was'nt going away either, so a week had past and still the same, pinkish sometimes brownish blood, but this time I was wearing a pantyliner. It wasnt heavy at all but it was there, so then almost another week gone by and I was at work and all of a sudden I felt a gush, I thought oh my god, so I left and drove myself to emerge, I was there for a good 2 hours just laying there. The doctor checked my cervix and said well I dont know what to tell ya, its shut tight, and then sent me to get an ultrasound and everything was perfect on it. so I went home and nothing, I didnt even bleed really, it was just like a gush of blood had to come out and that was that. I went back to spotting a brownish colour for another week. Im 13 weeks now and I havnt bled for like 4 weeks, so im hopfully ok, but holy shit what a ride that was........

PRECIOUS ONE....I HAVE HAD 3 MISCARRIAGES AND YES THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO ME. IT COULD JUST BE A SIGN THAT YOU NEED TO REST YOUR BODY, PROBABLY FOR THE DURATION OF YOUR PREGNANCY. I KNOW WOMEN WHO'VE STARTED OUT SHAKEY AND WENT THROUGH THEIR PREGNANCIES AS NORMAL. I HOPE THAT U READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO TO THE DOCTOR AGAIN. ASK YOUR DOCTOR TO CHECK YOUR ANTIPHOSPHOLIPIDS TO SEE IF U HAVE APS, MOST WOMEN DONT KNOW THEY HAVE IT UNTIL HAVING SEVERAL MISCARRIAGES...YOU CAN ALSO PULL IT UP ONLINE. MY DOCTOR HAS ME TAKING ONE BABY ASPRIN PER DAY TO KEEP BLOOD CLOTS FROM FORMING IN THE DEVELOPING PLACENTA. BUT I WISH YOU AND YOUR UNBORN BABY NOTHING BUT THE BEST SWEETHEART. I HOPE THAT HELPS

PreciousOne - 42 days ago.
Hi i Need to know if anyones has gone thru this! im so sad and upset! dont know what to expect or do. Im about 6 weeks pregnant and about 6 days ago i started spoting first a brownish color than a pinkish color now on Saturday which now makes 4 days ive been bleeding really red and heavy and having mild to medium cramping all these days . Ive been to the doc twice between this 6 days and the doctor checked my cervix she said it was closed. Good sign but that it looked as if i was in the process of having a miscarriage. I didnt know there was a process! but she said that i might not. she is now going to check my HCG level which i go tomorrow again. But im so scared and in pain. Why allready 4 days with cramps and bleeding/ why is my cervix closed if im having a miscarriage. how long is the process? ( she said it can be normal at times but most likely im going to have a miscarriage .I really really want my baby so i hope i dont have a miscarriage. but has this happened to anyone.

Hi all -- I am freaking out right now and I don't know what to do... I am 8 weeks pregnant and all day today I have had cramping and when I wiped aftering using the restroom, there was a lot of pink discharge -- I'm really worried bc this has never happened before, not even with my first pregnancy? Any suggestions??

bonnieheather - 47 days ago.
could be a little erosion or just the bleed you get when you period is due..or a harmless polop as long as you have no pain. keep calm derra, ill be thinking of you, let us all know how you get on.xxxx
