Caffeine
How much caffeine can I have during pregnancy?
Caffeine During pregnancy:Several doctors recommend to limit the caffeine intake during pregnancy to
300mg per day. The table below shows you exactly how much 300mg is. Drink decaf or tea instead.
Caffeine During breastfeeding:For most mothers, drinking an occasional caffeine containing beverage is not harmful for her baby as only a small amount of caffeine passes into the breastmilk. Limiting consumption of caffeine to the equivalent of
1 to 2 cups of coffee per day is a good guideline. Consuming
more than 750 mg of caffeine a day could result in caffeine accumulating in the baby`s body, especially in a newborn. It takes 2 to 5 days for a newborn to clear half the caffeine from his body. By 3 months of age the baby is able to clear half the caffeine in 14 hours.
Caffeine in Foods and Drinks| Coffee, Starbuck's 16 oz | 550 mg |
| Coffee, Non-gourmet 8 oz | 136 mg |
| Caffe Latte or Cappuccino 16 oz | 185 mg |
| Tea, Regular 8 oz | 50 mg |
| Mountain Dew 12 oz | 55 mg |
| Cola 12 oz | 35 to 45 mg |
| Chocolate, dark or semi-sweet 1 oz | 20 mg |
| Decaf Coffee 8 oz | 10 mg |
| Tea, Decaf or Herbal 8 oz | 5 mg |
| Hot Chocolate 8oz | 5 mg |
Herbal Teas
Most supermarket brands of herbal teas are safe to use during breastfeeding. Privately brewed remedies or teas could cause problems with breastfeeding.

I am a coffee drinker. I gave it up during my last pregnancy as well as other caffeine. No tea, sodas, and only had a very small amount of chocolate occasionally. My son didn’t sleep well until he was a year old!! I really don’t think it has too much to do with it. This time around I am having my 2 cups of coffee per day! I even have tea sometimes for dinner. We shall see… -Debster- -

:o) I LOVE my coffee and even though I was only ever having one (extra-large-mocha) per day, my dr told me to still have the same size but request a half shot instead.. This worked really well for me til i got too M/S to have any at all! However I'll definitely be having my one per day (extra-large-half-shot-mocha) as soon as I'm physically able to again! Bring on the 2nd Trimester lol lilpaw222 -

My one friend has come to a very interesting discovery..... between her and her cousin they have 7 kids total.....and they found that when they drank caffine during the pregnancy the babies would have difficulty sleeping when born and when they stayed away from caffine all together the babies were much less fussy and slept better...
just food for thought. Mommy2Isaiah121510 -

I absolutley LOVE coffee. I always have, since I was in grade school stealing sips from my dads cup lol! My family are all coffee drinkers too, my dad has like every coffee machine! cappuchino, french press, a bean grinder and brewer all in one and more so to stop drinking coffee is like impossible!! I drink a large double double from Timmies not every day but I have been drinking them more recently and my boyfriend calls it a baby killer. It makes me feel bad but I know it's not killing the baby... I only have one a day and some times not at all! My OB said to limit my coffee's to 2 or 3 a day so I think a large would be 2 cups at the most. I love my coffee! Wish my SO wouldn't make me feel bad =[ Felicia1986 -

I drink a medium or large coffee from Tim Hortons every day.
The bf doesn't 'allow' me to have candies or pop or chips, because he wants me healthy.
So.. while he is at work, I take the damn car and pick myself up a treat haha.
I feel so guilty, but coffee seems to be the only thing I have ever craved during my pregnancy, aside from the week long craving of gumballs in the first tri lol. januarymommi -

My doc told me he doesn't worry about caffeine. You have to drink quite a lot to do any harm to yourself or your baby. I drink caffeine everyday but no soda on an empty stomach. That causes gas pains so bad that they have put me against the wall in the break room at work in tears! I have a hard time drinking coffee with regular creamer but I use creme brulee creamer and not only does it taste AMAZING but it helps the coffee stay down! klderoos -

I don't usually drink coffee much but when I'm pregnant I love it! I drank it with my daughter as I was working very long days and travelling for work and with this pregnancy its been the same, I crave it. I have two cups a day by about 10am (homemade) if I buy a coffee from a cafe I only hav one as they are stronger. The only side effect I have had is it helps with constipation if you suffer. I'll give it up when breast feeding as the desire will go. tryingfornumber 2 -

I don't think there's anything wrong with the occasional energy drink, but I have heard of one lady who drank quite a few and her baby was so active that he ended up wrapping his cord around his neck many, many times and didn't survive. We want our babies active but not too active.. KyMMie MuMMy -

The reason they say not to have energy drinks during pregnancy is because they contain guarana which is a highly concentrated form of caffeine. more so than coffee beans. Gaurana is also used in weight loss pills because it is like a 'natural speed' I am guilty of having the occasional cup of coffee and sips of my husbands red bulls/ V's but all in all i would advise you to be careful. Cocoluv - heaps of people say that drinking energy drinks while pregnant is a terriblething to do, but I have the occasional V when I just can't stay awake. There is 109mg of caffiene in a bottle - about the same as a cup of coffee. So if we're allowed 1-2 cups of coffee (and this site says 300mg/day of caffiene) then I don't see the harm of the occasional V... Amber J -

crazy how your body has a way of putting you off certain things in pregnancy, i am 12 wks 4 days on my 2nd and i must admit while not pregnant i am a total coffee addict, now pregnant and while i was pregnant with my son, i could only manage one maybe 2 cups of decaf a day even then i felt a little off afterwards and so i stuck to just the morning cup to start my day!
it is true your body seems to reject what is not concidered good for you and your baby through pregnany, its magical and totally crazy but ya gotta love it!!!
congrats to all by the way, and best of luck!! m2b -

I find that drinking coffee increases my milk supply a bit. I was never a coffee drinker before until I came back to work with a 3 mo old! She is fine ( I also drink 1-2 diet coke with splenda's everyday) My LO sleeps through the night and is perfect!
