Cervical mucus is produced by estrogen and plays a factor in conception. During intercourse and after ejaculation, sperm travels through the vagina, into the cervix and upwards into the fallopian tubes for conception. When a woman is fertile, the cervical mucus changes properties to allow the sperm to move freely and remain alive for up to five (5) days inside the cervix.
After your menstrual cycle, your cervical mucus should take on several different forms.
Stage 1: Cervical mucus is dry and some may notice little to no mucus
Stage 2: Cervical mucus is thinner, milky and creamy
Stage 3: Cervical mucus is similar to that of egg whites, slippery, thin and stretchy
Stage 4: Cervical mucus is dry and sometimes sticky
You are most fertile during stage 3, which will last for approximately 1 to 5 days. If you are trying to conceive, this is the best time to have sexual intercourse. By stage 4, you are no longer fertile.
By wiping your vagina, you can monitor your cervical mucus. Egg white cervical fluid should stretch approximately 1 to 10 inches if placed between the fingertips! Heatlhy mucus should not have much of a color to it. For most women, it will be clear and wet. Any color (other than white or slightly yellowish), odor or thick consistency could be a sign of an infection.
Research has shown that women that do not smoke, avoid caffeine and drink 8 full glasses of water each day can increase their cervical mucus. Other suggestions for increasing cervical mucus are evening primrose oil, grapefruit juice, flax seed oil and red raspberry supplements.
