Genetic Testing

Genetic testing is an in-depth process that tests for any possible genetic defects or diseases that could be passed from one or both biological parents to their children. Genetic testing is done by obtaining blood samples or other body tissues (skin, bone, etc) that can determine whether an inherited condition is present.

The most common genetic diseases to test for include Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs and sickle-cell. Examples of genetic tests include amniocentesis and CVS.

Genetic tests may be performed if:

• A family hisotry of inherited disorders or diseases is present
• A parent or sibling shows symptoms of a genetic disease, but it has not been confirmed
• One parent has a child with an inherited disorder already
• An ultrasound examination or other prenatal test shows an increased risk of a genetic disease
• An expectant mother is of advanced maternal age
• An expectant mother has a history of micarriage or stillbirth

To obtain an accurate result, an expert in the field of genetic testing should conduct all tests and thoroughly interpret the results. As with other tests and procedures, there is a slight chance of false positive or false negative test results.
