What is implantation bleeding?

Once the egg implants itself into the lining of the uterus after conception, some women may notice a slight trace of pink or brownish discharge. This is known as implantation bleeding and may be confused with an early period. It is estimated that 20-30% of women will experience spotting during early pregnancy, occurring approximately 6 to 12 days after ovulation . Implantation bleeding can generally be seen approximately a week before your period is expected to start. However, unlike a menstrual period that will get heavier as the cycle progresses, implantation bleeding does not become heavier.

If implantation bleeding is present, it will likely only last 1-3 days and may be accompanied by other signs of pregnancy, including fatigue, nausea, a missed period, frequent urination, increased sensitivity to smells and/or tender or swollen breasts. Most home pregnancy tests can provide an accurate pregnancy confirmation 9 to 10 days after ovulation.

Implantation bleeding should not be a reason to become concerned and does not have any negative effects on a pregnancy. If implantation bleeding, or spotting, is accompanied by cramping, backaches or increased bleeding, it is recommended that you call your healthcare provider. On the flip side, not all women will experience implantation bleeding and there should be no cause for concern if you do not experience this slight spotting during early pregnancy.

I really need help. On the 3rd of May I went to the bathroom to find what seemed like the onset of a VERY early period. It was brown spotting accompanied by what looked like maybe a little discharge but enough to stain. (TMI sorry) My period isn't due until usually between the 10th and 12th. This spotting lasted not even a day let alone a few hours and I'm not even sure if it even continued after the bathroom incident. This has NEVER happened to me before and I had unprotected sex the week before and the weekend following the ending of my last period. I'm terrified about having cysts(which run in my family) or possibly being pregnant. Please help I need guidance..

Hi, Just hoping someone could help me out a little bit. Im experiencing some symptoms and just trying to figure out if what is happening could be implantation bleeding. I am not expecting my period for another 6/7 days & yesterday I woke up with brown discharge after wiping. I had sex a few times during my fertile week, and POSSIBLY on my ovulation day but i am not actively trying so i dont recall exactly which days....Along with the discharge i also have cramping and it FEELS ...different i think. More central to the bellybutton if that makes sense? its not all day cramping just comes and goes, sort of dull with some sharper pains once in a while and the discharge isnt there every time either. My breasts arent extremely full feeling, but slightly. This morning I noticed it was brown, AGAIN but this time it had what looked to be a piece of tissue possibly? Could that be implantation? PLEASE HELP !!!!

Hello ladies I am a mother of 2 and my youngest child is 10 months,i had a tubal when she was born 10 months ago.this is going to sound crazy but i think i had IB and my lower back is killing me along with the mild achy lower stomach like growing pains.could i be pregnant?

Okay, so heres what is going on. I am a mother to a 10 month old (so i`ve experienced pregnancy before). 7 days ago I started spotting - dark brown, just enough to wear a panty liner with some added blood clots - small. (I never have normal periods, and they have a mind of their own when they deside to come.)The bleed never got heaviever, just the same trickle for 7 days. Yesterday I started cramping really bad, enough to make me stop and sit down. Today, I felt dizzy while cleaning, and have also had made 5 trips to the bathroom for diahrrea spells (TMI - sorry). My body temp has went up .5 degrees than normal. I feel like I could pass out at my desk at work, all day long. Anybody know what is going on with me? Could I be pregnant?

I have had to children before TTC this one and never had implantation bleeding... I spotted this month about 5 or 6 DPO just once. Could this be implantation bleeding?

Okay Kathy, I have the verdict (I think). Had 2 blood tests - one this past Friday and another this morning. Spoke with my OB and I'm not pregnant. Not sure what to think and since AF was a week early, I'm not sure how to time the Big O for this month. Planning to have another chat with my OB to figure things out, especially since ordinarily, AF would show up tomorrow. I’ll totally be freaked out if AF shows tomorrow, since I just finished this last bleeding spell yesterday (the one I initially thought was implantation bleeding when it started on Tuesday, but clearly it was just an early period). Oh well - I do wish you well and I hope that this is indeed your month. Now that I'm out of the game (temporarily at least), all the weight is on your shoulders! Make me proud! :-)

I tested today and bfn for me but its still early. It took me and my hubby 2 years to conceive or 2nd baby I got pregnant with my first in high school but we went thru 3 misscarriages and it was hard. But it did happen and as soon as I stopped breastfeeding my sec I was pregnant with #3! I couldn't believe I was that fertital! I hope that you get ur bfp just remember that god has a plan for you!

Had a chat with my OB this afternoon, and she had me come in for a blood test today, and I'll take another on Monday morning to compare (I didn't get to the lab until 4:30pm today, so I won't know anything until Monday morning anyway). She mentioned that - in my case - if the two numbers are the same (which is HIGHLY unlikely), i could have an ectopic pregnancy that she'd need to treat – again, highly unlikely. If Friday’s number is higher than Monday's hcg number, then I *was* pregnant, but am no longer and will be back to the 'drawing board'. However, if Monday's number is higher than Friday's number, I'm pregnant and progressing - which is the best case scenario. I'm not sure what to think at this point. I hate to be discouraged because we've only been TTC for 4 months at this point. But this is turning out to be much more difficult than expected. I'm 31 so I *kinda* have time on my side, but I really feel for people like one of my dear friends who has been TTC for over a year and is now going through different tests with her OB to find out why she 1) hasn't been able to conceive, much less carry a baby. In any case, my bleeding has slowed down to spotting, but I did have a small-medium sized clot this morning which gave me the heebie-jeebies considering the last time I had clots, I was m/c-ing. All in all, though, I’ve bled since Tuesday night, so roughly 2.5-3 days. If spotting stops by in the morning, I’ll test then and if not, I’ll test Sunday. Regardless, even if I don’t test myself, I’ll know something from at least one of the blood tests around mid-morning Monday. It’s really hard, but I’m really glad you’re out there and going through almost the same thing. Really helps to get things off my chest. Thanks for listening. I’ll keep you posted on my situation, and please keep me posted on yours. Hopefully, at least one of us is truly pregnant!!! Sending good thoughts your way!

If I had one I would test tomorrow I hate the not knowing lol but I will deft buy one tomorrow and test Sunday so let me know how it turns out. I had no spiting today so it only lasted 3 days for me. AF should be here in 5the days but think im gonna test Sunday so we'll see ;)

BTW, Kathy - your symptoms sound a lot closer to what I've seen on the message boards, etc. about implantation bleeding...just a slight drop or so when you wipe. Mine is a cross between my actual cycle and spotting (my actual cycle is moderate but not heavy). Not sure what to think. You and I are on the same day though - i'm 14 dpo today. I think we should both take an hpt tomorrow morning and see what shows up LOL.

Yeah - it's kinda crazy. No cramps, and I'm still bleeding. It's a solid week before AF and I'm almost getting the sense that the bleeding is slowing down. I'm hoping that I can test in the next couple of days because the suspense is killing m.e Better yet - hopefully my OB will let me pop in for a blood test so I can finally have an answer. I've been extra tired lately too (in my PJs by 8pm, I've had 7-8 hours of sleep and still tired during the day), so I really hope I'm pregnant but I'm trying to be realistic. Baby dust to you as well!

Sweetbaby I kinda wonder if im ha ing the implatiion bleeding too. I have had 3 babies and never had this before. Im 13 days past 'O'between and have had spotting for 3the days now light brown spots in my underwear and a little when I wipe. Im feeling tired and not suppose to get AF for another 5 days. I think its too early to test I would wait until you miss the first day of AF. Good luck and baby dust to you

Hi there - looks like no one has posted here in a while, but here goes...I think I'm having implantation bleending. I'm 11dpo, and (TMI) when I went to the bathroom this evening, there was a little blood that came out and a little when I wiped. I’ve been wearing a pad for the past hour, but there are only a few drops. The blood is part red, part brown. Not sure what to think except that it’s implantation. AF isn’t expected until 10/10, and I have a very regular, 29-day cycle. HPT’s have been BFN ever since this past Saturday (the suspense was killing me, so I couldn’t wait to test). No major symptoms other than the bleeding – uterus and breasts have both felt heavy for the past several days (since approx. 4 or 5dpo), and I have had this odd, almost metallic taste since around the same time. The metallic taste is interesting – the last time I had it was my previous pregnancy which m/c at 6 weeks this past July. Really hoping that 1) I have a bean and 2) this bean sticks! Is anybody out there???

Hello im anna i miss carried 2 months ago in april my period came ontime but it was a very odd odd period. very light scainty brown spotty discharge for 2 days got alil heavyier an stoped then had brown bleeding for 11 days an stoped now im supossed to get my period never came ( i ovulated 2 weeks ago an a few days) an no period nothing (i had sex 3 days befour ovulation day) an for 2 weeks straight threw. i never got a period... is this because of my misscarriage? an the long period last month or is this pregnancy? or just a late period from misscarriage an from lasts months weird long period?. OR i missed my period because i have a few pockets of fluid in my uterious some fluid an alil blood? could this be why? anyone no please talk to me, ive taken a very cheap pregnancy test a dollar one from family dollar i got a negative . anyone with a similar experience please tell me thank you . could the brown spotting be implantation bleeding from last month?

OK - does anyone have experience with Implantation bleeding? My last AF came Feb 10. It's not due until March 10. Today, I wiped and there was Dark brown blood. Not a lot, but enough for me to raise an eyebrow. We have been trying for over a year and a half now since the loss of our last pregnancy. I don't want to get too excited...but 9 days before my period? For the last few months, my period has irregular (Before that and since the MC it was clockwork - every 4 weeks to the hour). I have also noticed my nipples are VERY sensitive right now. Usually By breasts don't hurt until 6 days before my period, and my nipple don't tingle like this when I get my period... If I don't wear a bra they get a tickle sensation (which didn't happen before). Any advice out there?

Hello ladies... I wanted to read up some more about this implantation bleeding and also check out some of the comments. I wanted to see if anyone is currently experiencing the same symptoms I seem to be having.... or not having. Low and behold, I've already left a comment in this thread OVER A YEAR AGO. Sadly, I'm still NOT pregnant. This time around I think I experienced implantation bleeding. A few days ago I was in the bathroom and when I went to wipe, I had blood. It was pretty bright though. I thought that it was AF so I used a pad. Nothing happened. I used a hpt this morning and it came back negative. I'm going to give it a few more days and try again. This will be the second month in a row where AF is late. My cycle is usually around 34 days. Last month my cycle was 48 days. Today marks day 44. WHAT IS GOING ON?! Help please!!!

need help ladies:0) my cycle lasted only 2 days this month. i was due to start on jan 31; started on feb 1 (evening) and went for 2 days. would my ovulation times be the same? my regular cycles would last 3 to 5 days, medium flow for 2 and light to spotting for the remainder. don't know if TTC is making a difference to how my cycles will now run.

Hey ladies, I need some help. I was on Depo from Sept 2008 until my last shot in July 2010. I was due for my shot on Oct 13th and actually had a light period starting the 12th. I haven't had one since. I had a ton of pg symptoms so I tested 4 times and they were negative. They seemed to stop so I was great. Then on Dec 30th I had relations with my husband and I know it wasn't careful. I wasn't overly concerned but decided to keep an eye on it. On thursday, jan 6 I started spotting. It was light and brownish pink. It was only when I wiped until the next day I had a small amt in my panties. (Sorry for tmi) anyway, this lasted until yesterday and is gone at this point. I'm wondering if this is hormones from coming off the shot or if it could be implantation? I haven't had a normal cycle since coming off the depo so it's a bit confusing. Thanks for the help!

It's a week or 10 days before my period is due & I'm bleeding. (Sometimes my cycle is 28 days, sometimes it's 31.) It's not pink & it's not brown, but it's lighter red than usual & it's not heavy, but there's definitely more than spots. What do you think? Is there a chance it's implantation bleeding? BTW, I'm taking Clomid.

my last period was nov 08 2010. according to my Ovulation calendar i ovulated somewhere btween the 20 and 23..i woke up this morning to use the bathroom..went to wipe(sorry tmi) and there was a little spot of light pink blood..surely my AF shouldnt be this early..possibly implantation bleeding? when can i test or should i just wait and see

i had what i can only think was implantation bleeding yesterday.....AF was due yesterday & is a no show so far apart from a brownish/pinkish 'splodge' of cm (sorry TMI) then nothing.....i really really hope thats the case!! I dont wanna get too excited & we've only been trying for 2 months but heres hoping!

So I think I'm pregnant, which isn't a good thing considering i'm in school and I already have a 2 year old. The first day of my period was July 20th and I have a 30 day cycle but yesturday and today I've had really light bleeding which never happens. I'm hoping I'm not pregnant but it wouldn't be the end of the world. It's just fristrating that I have to wait 11 more days until I can take a test.

I will give you the short version. I have been on the pill for years and there have been many times when I missed a pill and took it the next day, but I have never gotten pregnant while on it. I also know for a fact that this happened in April and May, 2010. Over the last 2 weeks or so, I have been experiencing many pregnancy symptoms: nausea, exhausted, dark nipples, weight gain in stomach (I look pregnant) movement in abdomen, backpain, headaches, food aversions/cravings. My son was born two yrs ago so I do remember a lot about the way I felt and I can swear I am pregnant, but the tests are coming up negative. ALSO, I DID get my 'period' this month because I was still taking the pill until a few days ago. It was very light and I have also have breakthough/possible implantation bleeding a few times over last two months. Was that a real period or was my body 'making' me get it because I am still on the pill???? I called my doctor's office for a blood test but they wont do it until I get an actual 'positive' result on a home pregnancy test. What should I do??? Am I pregnant???
