Making the decision to conceive after the loss of a pregnancy can be stressful for many couples. Feelings of anxiety, hope, fear and anticipation are all common. Whether a prior pregnancy was lost as a result of miscarriage, stillbirth or some other reason, there are others who can relate to the feelings you have.
It is recommended that couples wait atleast three to six months before trying to conceive another child. This time will give your body time to heal from the previous pregnancy, as well as gain emotional control of the feelings that have occured as a result of the loss. Because the uterus needs time to recover and the endometrial lining needs time to gain strength, it is wise to wait atleast three menstrual cycles before trying to conceive.
A couple may want to seek medical help if they have experienced two or more miscarriages, are over the age of 35, have a chronic illness or infection that could affect the outcome of pregnancy or have fertility complications.
Because of the fears that will be associated with becoming pregnant again, it is only natural to be scared, paranoid and cautious during another pregnancy. You might want to consider waiting to make preparations for the baby's arrival. Some couples are not ready to purchase baby items and get the nursery decorated just right until very late in the pregnancy, or even after the baby is born. Doctors are generally very open to the suggestions and requests of their patients, especially those that have suffered a loss in the past. Ask your caregiver to monitor you more closely and if necessary, request additional tests or procedures to help put your mind at ease.
