Basically, your Dr. will have to undress from the waist down and put your feet in stirrups. Then they will lube their finger/hand and insert into your vagina and basically push against your cervix to check for dilation. I’m not going to lie, it hurts really bad (or at least it hurt for me)! You might have some spotting and contractions afterwards, but it will go away…

They typically check for dilation and effacement at 38 weeks and not any sooner here in the US. 36 weeks may be a little too early, I think.

Obviously every doctor is different, and every woman is different… Right around 36 weeks is when my doc does the beta strep test…. it’s where they quickly swab your vagina and rectum. Then since they already have you undressed my doctor also does do an internal check at 36 weeks, although some don’t because it’s really doesn’t tell when you’ll go into labor at all, just nice to see if there is some progress. For me it doesn’t hurt at all. Just don’t tense up! =) I remember with my first I dreaded all the checks and everything, but after you give birth once it’s like, BRING IT ON! LOL You’ll be fine, if you really want to know what they will do you can call and ask… good way to mentally prepare. =) Just don’t tense up during any internal checks, breathe deeply.

I didn’t have my Dr check me for dialation at all. He said when I was 37 weeks that I would go into labour when I went into labour. I had a healthy pregnancy throughout. I went into labour shortly after my last apt at 39 weeks 5 days! I think it really depends on the Dr and where you live as well.

I got checked at 36 weeks and my appointment was booked at the hospital. Im not sure why she booked it at the hospital, maybe she she was working that night there or something. But its also the night they decided to induce me becuase i was dilating and we didnt want to chance me going into labour during the week as DH Was posted to another base and i wasnt moving up with him for a month (housing reasons) That was 36w5d

I had an appointment with the hospital at 37 weeks to register and have a tour of the maternity ward. I didn’t see the dr at the hospital at all until labor. So I’m unsure by your question if it’s an appointment with the dr at the hospital like the others suggest or if it’s just an appointment for paperwork and the tour.

My midwife never checked me either. I went into labour with my first at 40 weeks, 5 days. With my second I went into labour at 38 weeks. Never had a check done until I was actually in active labour. Thank goodness. Getting checked is never comfortable and it doesn’t actually tell you when you will go into labour- it just causes stress.

I was 36 weeks when i had my dilation and effacement checked. I was already 2cm dilated and 90% effaced and he could feel her head. My next appointment at 37 weeks he was surprised i had not had bubby already and did not bother checking me again and just did an ultrasound. Had her 2 days after that appointment. Everywhere is different but yes after 36 week you can expect an examination…it did not hurt that much…peice of cake compared to Giving birth 😉
