ok so my cousin made a 5 gallon bucket of laundry detergent for 9 bucks. She said that there are no oils or fragrances in her she chose not to put them in there. She has a two year old and washes thier clothes in it. My question is this safe if I decided to make it to use on my baby`s clothes and do you think it will work in an he washer?

i-am-pregnant asked

I would say (without looking at what is all in it) that is is probably safer than the stuff you buy at the store..not including the sensitive or clear/dye fragrant free types

I just use ALL free and clear. NO dyes, fragrances, anything. safer on adult, kid and baby skin than even Dreft.

Yeah all that’s in it is 4 cups hot tap water

1 Fels-Naptha soap bar (this is laundry soap. I found it at Ace Hardware)

1 cup Arm&Hammer washing soda (I also found this at Ace)

1/2 cup Borax (can be gotten at walmart, target, etc.)
So I was just wandering if these would work? We are currently using all free and clear now bc dh has sensitive skin.

Home made laundry soap is very good for sensitive skin, because of the things it doesn’t have in it. It is also fantastic on the wallet! There are also recipes out there for dry detergent if you prefer that to liquid.

Well I would have to have liquid bc our apt provides washers and dryers and they are HE

I’ve used this soap before. Super cheap and easy to make. The only thing that concerns me is the borax. It just seems kinda harsh.

If you dont use HE washing stuff it will mess up your washing machine over time

i used regular old ALL with my daughter because the baby detergent didn’t take out stains so well. she was fine with it! so the homemade stuff should be ok too but i’m just guessing. it all depends on the sensitivity of their skin.

Ok I got this off the Duggar Family Recipe Site The recipe is the same and it tells about top loaders and front loaders and how to mix up detergent for each hope this copies right here goes:

Homemade Liquid Laundry Soap- Front or top load machine- best value

4 Cups – hot tap water
                    1 Fels-Naptha soap bar
1 Cup – Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda*
                    ½ Cup Borax

                    – Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.

-Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.

-Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water. Shake before each use. (will gel)

-Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil.

-Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons.

-Top Load Machine- 5/8 Cup per load (Approx. 180 loads)

-Front Load Machines- ¼ Cup per load (Approx. 640 loads)

*Arm & Hammer “Super Washing Soda” – in some stores or may be purchased online here (at Baking Soda will not work, nor will Arm & Hammer Detergent – It must be sodium carbonate!!
