so this evening my husband decided to play doctor, with CLEAN hands he tried to see how many fingers he could fit into my cervix. Being a man, he said he could get two fingers in and then open them up about 3/4 of an inch. So now i am curious as to how many cm that would mean i am, or close to. At my last dr. appt two weeks ago, i was 3 cm and 50% effaced. Also when my husband did this, i lost most of my mucus plug, if not all of it. I have already lost one mucus plug about 2.5 weeks ago. I guess i formed a new one, and lost that one tonight. What do you ladies think?
Not to sound rude or ignorant but can someone please explain to me how that works? Like how does you husband know what to feel for? I’ve heard of women having their husbands check them or women checking to see if their IUD is still inside of them. I think that is the weirdest thing ever. How far up do you have to go? again I’m sorry I just don’t get it. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help
I was induced at 37 weeks with my last one, but 2 days before I was induced, I checked myself and could actually feel his head (through my cervix) and could feel the “sutures” they call them. I could easily fit 2 fingers and spread them a good ways. When I was induced 2 days later, I was 80% effaced and 4 cm. Being 80% was probably why it was so easy for me to feel his head. Not going to lie, it was sort of strange knowing I was feeling his head, but it was neat at the same time. The shooting pains is your cervix starting to change more. Effacement is felt by how thick your cervix is, as in up and down.
Thanks guys! We went on a very long walk today, walked slow but i hope it was healpful. On our way back home, about the last 2 miles i started getting random “lightning fast” shooting pains in my cervix/vagina area, what exactly was happening? I realize his head is down there putting preasure on me, but why the random stabs…if felt like a foot was jamming down on me…
My last pregnancy I was blessed with a wonderful midwife! She showed me how to check out many things with my pregnancy and even how to check when I would be ovulating. I checked my self regulary when TTC and I knew exactly when I would need to BD with DH..haha. For this pregnancy I will start checking my self 2 times a week starting at 35 weeks, that is what she instructed me to do last pregnancy. By what you are saying you had your DH do, I would GUESS that you could be around 3/4 cm. My midwife told me that it is always better to either have someone with experience to check you or to check your self. Someone else might not be able to tell if they are hurting you, so just be careful doing it that way. Good luck with your baby. Oh and I am in the US, guess I just got one of the midwives that like to teach their patients. lol
I think that’s awesome. i have read some sites on this and may try or have DH try as I get farther along. Other countries actualy teach their pregnant women to check themselves so that they know when they are dialating an when to head in to the office. Some midwifes in the US do as well. But I guess most don’t. I think it is interesting to know your own body like that and really no different than the women who check cervical changes in order to conceive.
I would say you are probably 3 cm they say they measure dilation based on how many fingers can fit in the cervix being that he fit two and could spread them a little 3 is safe…no big deal if you lost your plug you can reform a new one. If he could feel the baby’s head that is a great sign means baby is in the right position and starting to engage in the pelvic area!!!!
Today marks 37 weeks for me. I read on a site that when you insert one to two fingers in at some point you should feel what seems to be “puckerd lips” as if you were going to give a kiss. This is suppose to be the cervix. If you are dilated, you will be able to insert clean finger(s) into the cervix. I dont really understand how to check effacment though. It was nice to have him check though, he was very curious, felt like he was back in anatomy class. At least now i know i probably have not made much progress in the past two weeks. He did however say that he could feel the babies head by pushing up. He did not feel it while in my cervix, but along the top of the what may be my vaginal wall (?) pushing up toward my belly. Not real sure, but thats what we were guessing, could be all wrong.
Soooooo how far along are you?
I would say you are probably still 3cm dialated.
I think it’s really hard to tell. As you know, the mucus plug can be replaced. During my pregnancy no one ever checked me to see if I was dialated or effaced, so for all I know I could have been at 5cm for a week before I went into labour! I would say if your hubby could get two fingers in, and spread them out, that would equal about 3cm’s? Hey, it’s only a totally un-educated guess though!
sorry not a good idea. I would tell your doctore what he did.
my5babies – your case sounds a lot like mine. I had DH check again last night, after we had walked and i had those shooting pains, we were curious if it would feel different from the previous night. And boy it was! DH was able to get three fingers in and wiggle them around, he said he could feel the head, so he decided to rub/tap his little head, which made DS move his head a little. The look on my husbands face was priceless, he was so excited, kinda freaked at first…but it was nice to know that he thought it felt quite a bit different from the previous night. Thanks for your story, i can relate to it a lot
