Week by week Twins calendar: pregnancy in weeks 24-28

4-8 8-12 12-16 16-20 20-24 24-28 28-32 32-36 36-40

You have encountered a magical point in your pregnancy. Around 24 weeks, the babies will enter the stage of viability. If born now, there is a 90% chance of survival with medical intervention. During these four weeks, the babies will double their weight and by week 28 each baby will weight around 3 pounds and will be around 15 inches long. Fat is developing rapidly under the skin and the babies are beginning to get more pigment in their skin. Hair continues to grow and facial features are becoming more distinct. During this month your babies' eyelids will become unfused. If observed on ultrasound, you can see your baby opening and closing their eyes. Each baby is already very individual and has their own cycles of sleep and wakefulness. Babies will begin to respond to sound during this month. Turn on the music and read to your babies each day.

By 28 weeks you are likely to feel the affects of pregnancy. You will be feeling very heavy and the weight of the pregnancy is probably starting to affect your back and legs. The pressure of your growing uterus can also cause backaches. You may experience relief when the babies change their positions. As the babies move down into your pelvis, you will experience pelvic pressure and increased pressure in your rectum. You will notice an increased urge to urinate more frequently. This urge will remain for the rest of the pregnancy.

You should be feeling movements from each baby every day. The intensity of their kicks and movements may be changing around this time. There is not room for them to move around as much anymore, so you may not feel as strong of movements.

Because you are carrying multiples, expect to experience alot of Braxton Hicks contractions. A Braxton Hicks contraction is a contraction of the uterus and feels similar to a menstrual cramp. Typically, they are not painful but will make your belly feel hard. Sometimes a change in position will trigger a Braxton Hicks contraction. Unlike true labor contractions, there is no pattern to a Braxton Hicks contraction.

Ongoing Symptoms

Nasal stuffiness
Sensitivity to sun
Bleeding gums
Constipation
Increased heart rate
Anemia
Change in sexual desire
Leakage from nipples
Change in appetite
Leg cramps
Fetal movements
Heartburn
Fatigue
Edema
Stretch marks
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Overheating

To Think About This Month

Be aware of symptoms of preterm labor
Obtaining baby care essentials
Finding care for your other children while you are laboring
Limiting physical activity
Accepting help from others

At The Doctor
You will probably be visiting the doctor every two weeks by this point. Make sure you address any questions or concerns to your caregiver. Make sure that you have asked your doctor about any physical activities and sexual intercourse at this point of your pregnancy. You will be screened for group B streptococcus around this time. You will also have a glucose tolerance test at this visit. The glucose tolerance test will check to see if you have gestational diabetes. In addition to these tests, your caregiver will be checking:
1.) Weight gain or loss
2.) Blood pressure, pulse and respiratory rate
3.) Heart and lungs
4.) Breast exam
5.) External palpation of the uterus
6.) Measure height of fundus
7.) Fetal hearbeat
8.) Urine screens for sugar, blood and any bacteria
9.) Possible ultrasound assessment

Hi all - I'm 25 weeks today. A week ago at my 24 week appointment babies weighed 1 lb 5 oz and 1 lb 6 oz. I am feeling alot of movement and today have noticed a tiny bit of fluid leaking. Has anybody else had this? Should I be worried - dr. just says to keep an eye on it. This is my first pregnancy and I'm very high risk due to my age anyway. (41) ...Just feeling lots of pressure but no contractions to speak of. Lots of aches and pains though.

I'm 25 weeks 3 days and I had an appointment yesterday. Doc says if baby A is still breeched and if she stays that way I will be having a C-Section. The babies are so low. When the doc did the internal sonogram right when she stuck it in you could see Baby A's feet and Baby B's head. I think they are coming around the 32 or 33 mark. Doc wants me to make it to the 36 week mark.

pregnanthippiemama: I thought that I too felt the babies move this time around 10 weeks. Of course it's hard to be certain because I did have a lot of gas, but....once you feel babies move, it's something you never forget. HAve fun!
nichandy: I wouldn't worry too much about the contractions. If you feel they are getting to be too much, take a rest, drink lots of water and then see what happens. Usually by this stage in your pregnancy, your uterus is just exercising. Hope that helps.

I am currently 26w5d with twin boys. My OB told us at our last appt that the twins are measuring about 2 weeks ahead...does this happen often? Should I be concerned that my kids are going to be huge or worse come too early? My 22-mo-old was 8lb8oz at her 39wk birth. Do I just make big babies?

As of today, I am 26 weeks pregnant with twins. It is a boy and a girl! My husband and I are so excited. We already have a son that will be two on December 26. After these babies, I am getting my tubes tied because they are coming to fast for me. But Congradulations to all others, motherhood is a beautiful things and I wish to all of you the best of luck and money! You will need it to stay supplied with pampers and wipes.

Hi everyone. I'm almost 26 weeks with identical twin girls. Has anyone had they diabetes test yet? I went today and my levels were high. So I have to go to the hospital for a 5 hour screening tomorrow. Other than that I'm already getting braxton Hicks contractions and Ive been on bed rest since I was 18 weeks. How is everyone else doing? O this is my first children.
