Born & Birth stories

Your baby's crown-to-rump length is almost 2.5 inches and she now weighs between 8 and 14 grams! In just three weeks, your baby's size has more than doubled and begins to look a lot more human. Even though you won't be able to feel your baby moving at this time, you can stimulate him and he will squint, open his mouth and move his fingers or toes.

By the end of this week, your uterus is too large to remain completely in your pelvis. You might be able to feel your uterus above your pubic bone. The uterus will continue to grow throughout your pregnancy and will return to its usual size within a few weeks after delivery. Before pregnancy, the uterus is almost solid and holds less than 0.3 ounces. During pregnancy, your uterus will become a thin-walled, muscular container that will hold the fetus, amniotic fluid and placenta. Before pregnancy, the uterus weighs approximately 2.5 ounces and when your baby is born, it will weigh almost 40 ounces!

Because most of the structures are already formed at this point, few will be formed after this time. The structures will continue to grow and develop throughout the remainder of your pregnancy. Your baby's skeletal system now has centers if bone formation in most of the bones. The digestive system is capable of making contractions that push food through the bowels and it is also able to absorb sugar. The pituitary gland beginning to make hormones. You will probably be able to hear your baby's heartbeat with a Doppler at this time!

This week may be the first week that you begin to feel better! Morning sickness often tends to improve or diminish at this time. You may begin to show slightly, especially if this is not your first pregnancy. You will feel more comfortable in loose clothing, such as maternity clothes. In addition to your tummy getting larger your breasts, hips, legs and sides may be getting bigger also.

Your baby develops reflexes and the skin is very sensitive.
The brain is fully formed, and the child can feel pain. the baby may even suck his thumb. The eyelids now cover the eyes, and will remain shut until the seventh month to protect the delicate optical nerve fibers.

ourbabyrose - 3.1 hours ago
Hello week 12! Sweetbabyapt2-that is so exciting. I have my u/s on Thursday and can hardly wait. Assuming all goes well with our u/s, this will be the weekend we finally share our news!

mamakitty - 3.6 hours ago
Thats great Sweetbaby!..I'm happy 4 you!

mamakitty - 3.8 hours ago
blueskies I can only imagine how much this is killing you, maybe you should consider renting a fetal doppler where u can look for the heartbeat yourself..maybe try every couple days..beats 2 weeks thats for sure and u can use it throughout your whole pregnancy

Sweetbabyapt2 - 3.9 hours ago
Hello Ladies. I am bursting with Joy right now, so I need to share. Just had my ultra sound this morning. Everything looks great measuring 12 weeks 5 days. and the tech is pretty sure were having a BOY. I already have a little girl so I couldn't be happier. Hope everyone is have a great healthy day!!!

blueskies - 3.9 hours ago
I did that mamakitty. I didn't get far. They want me to come in at 14weeks to re-check. Seems like a long time to me.

mamakitty - 4.2 hours ago
blueskies: Tell your doctor you want to come back in and look for the heartbeat..like i said..i went oneday and it was not able to identify..two days later loud n clear!

blueskies - 5.9 hours ago
Thanks to all the ladies who tried to reassure me. I called the office when I got back yesterday after the doctor wasn't able to get the HB. I didn't get very far. The doctor was not concerned so thats good but, I am!! Every pregnancy is different, for me I have heard all my babies at 12 weeks so I find this to be worrisome. Hoping it was just difficult to hear this baby because of position of the uterus or baby position. Keeping positive thoughts!

bookerred - 6.3 hours ago
NIC: You are in our prayers. I have not had any vomitting until this week, y-day and t-day, ugh. I had a few days last week where I felt almost normal, lol. The hard part is having to go to work after the fact. I will find out what we are having on April 7, my next appt. I've been twice to the doc so far and both times they did an U-sound. I've never been to this doc before but she seems nice. Usually they have used the doppler to find the heartbeat but this doc uses the U-sound. I'm sipping on cranberry juice w/lots of ice. I hope everyone has a good week. I'm starting to get a sore throat. TC

choppysmom - 6.4 hours ago
Nic, I am so very sorry for your loss. I know exactly how you are feeling. I too had a missed m/c in Dec 2008. My 8 week scan looked great, but at 10 weeks, there was no heartbeat. It was devastating. The best thing for you to do is talk to your husband. Friends will try and say they understand, but unless you have experienced this type of loss, you really can't fully understand. Please feel free to vent at me any time you need. I am truly sorry.

moknows1 - 7.9 hours ago
Good luck Sarah..everything will be fine.

moknows1 - 7.9 hours ago
jcl...a girl! That's wonderful. I have a daughter and she is just such a joy. Hope you're feeling well.

Hey ladies! Got to meet my dr. today and he is so nice! I am so happy to have a dr. that will be there the whole time. :) He gave me an u/s for fun today so I saw my 12w5d plum! So beautiful! Looked like a little alien with a buddah belly hehehe <3

mommytobe3 - 17.6 hours ago
Almost done with week 12!! Have an ultrasound on friday...praying that the cord cyst has disapeared :( I have been so worried about this the past 3 weeks :( Anyone else worry about things like that when you are pregnant?? I try not to worry so much, but i constantly think about it:( Just can't wait to see my baby again!!! Hope everyone is having a great week!!!

dhames33 - 19.9 hours ago
Hi Ladies - finally week 12! I feel like I'm getting too big for 12.My bump is really high up and the doc said it's scar tissue pushing up from c-section. Anyone else like this? Nic - I'm so sorry. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I always thought if we made it to 12 weeks, we're in the clear - but it's not true. My SIL was 2 weeks behind me and had a similar incident yesterday. I'm just so sad for her too. God bless each and everyone of us!

mamakitty - 20.6 hours ago
Hey ladies..! First day in week 12..we are all so blessed to have made it this far!!!!!!! symptoms seems to have left except a little bit of nausea and fatigue, other than that starting to feel great! Ultrasound on 23rd cant wait!!! Hope you all are feeling great! Blueskies: Don't worry! It's hard to find a heartbeat before 14 weeks anyways! I went twice in one week..first time couldnt find it and 2 days later loud and clear!

atypical woman - 23.7 hours ago
had 1st ultrasound today, all's well

jcl10 - 1 days ago
So I guess the symptoms disappearing are in my head. Saw my baby jumping all around today. Found out its a girl! A little early at 12 weeks but the tech said she does early gender at 12 weeks all the time and she is never wrong. We'll see. She said she is 90-95% sure. So excited! Thanks for the feedback sunnymom2b. It does feel good off the progesterone. Nic- I'm very sorry for your loss. Been through it many times myself. Please know all of our thoughts are with you!

moknows1 - 1 days ago
Nic, I'm so sorry for your loss. Time will heal. Take care of yourself.

amy1stbaby - 1 days ago
Nic, I am soooo very sorry to hear this. I guess we feel more relieved at this time to make it to the 12 week. This must have been such a shock and that the rug has been pulled out from underneath you. It's hard for others to feel and empathasize with you as they don't know exactly what you are going thru. If you need to talk, I am here, otherwise maybe a support group can help. I pray God gives you the strength and peace to get thru this. Take care honey!

sweetadeline - 1 days ago
blue skies--if it makes you feel any better, in my last pregnancy we didn't hear the heartbeat at our 12 wk appt, but it was there loud and strong at the next one. Also, if you are really stressing out just call the office and ask to come in and get a heartbeat check. Most of the time its just the position of the baby at that particular time and they may be able to pick it up on a second try.

martinsmiracle - 1 days ago
blue skys- you should call the office and tell them you are under too much stress and need to have some reassurance, this happended to me and my doctor saw my worry adn did ultrasound. there is no reason to put yourself through that.

blueskies - 1 days ago
Went to my 12 week OB visit this morning. My doctor was not able to find the babys' heartbeat. She said its probably nothing. It doesn't feel like nothing to me since I don't know for certain. Im so worried now. :(

sunnymom2b - 1 days ago
jcl - I also just stopped taking progesterone. I was doing suppositories. I stopped at 12 weeks. I still feel plump, though. I'm not sure if it's because being 12 weeks, or stopping them I feel like I also have more energy, although today I'm dragging. Still not adjusted to the time change! I'm glad to be off of them! Just felt yucky on them. Nic- I am so sorry for your loss.

Nic - I am so so sorry for your loss xx

NicR77 - 1 days ago
Hi everyone, I haven't ever left a comment before but I have been following the week by week site since week 4. I had my 12 week ultrasound for screening on the 12/3/10 and found out the baby had stopped developing at 10 weeks and no longer had a heartbeat. You can imagine my shock and devastation since I had already had an ultrasound at 9 weeks and everything was perfect. So I'm left to pick up the pieces and explain to my 3 girls and everyone else what I can't explain to myself. I had given the green light to the girls to tell the good news to friends due to the fact that I was 12 weeks and had already seen the heartbeat and now I'm left a complete mess. I'm sorry to come on a put a dampener on everyone's time of happiness but I just needed to share. At the moment I'm not taking much comfort in talking to friends and family (other than my husband and girls). So thanks for listening and I really do wish the best for all of you and your pregnancies. Nic

jcl10 - 2 days ago
I stopped taking my progesterone supplements last Saturday at 11 weeks. I have nocitcable been smaller since stopping them. Maybe just less bloating? i hope. Anyone else recently stop progesterone? Any side effects. Oh, also morning sickness has subsided and I have a lot more energy. Hope this is coincindental to leaving the 1st trimester and entering the 2nd. I have a scan tomorrow and am a bit nervous...

Husbands just don't get it sometimes!

blueskies - 2 days ago
Talk about a temper. I was mentioning things that I didn't like to my husband. Valid things!! He says 'brace yourself(to himself) Here comes the hormones! Grrrrrr.

Girls-R-Us - 2 days ago
Just wanted to say that I discussed 'fluttering' of the baby at this stage w/ my doctor, and it is very possible. She said usually a woman gets more sensitive to the movements after having previous pregnancies. Usually it's the slightest of flutters and it's not very often....mostly only when sitting still. Most women are not able to feel the flutters at this stage though. There's a huge difference between a flutter of the baby, a gas movement, or a rhythmic beat (pulse) for me. Just needed to say this for those of us who know we are feeling our LO!! Hope everyone had a great weekend! :-)

Happy UK mothers day to you! We celebrate both so I get 2 lots of presents!

Last day of week 12! Woo! Happy (UK) Mother's Day everyone!!!

atypical woman - 2 days ago
danette, thanks for the warning, but it will actually be my husband at home, i'm only taking 2 weeks off to keep my practice, plus i wouldn't get mat-leave anyway since i'm self employed. so i'll be coming home to relieve my tired, cranky husband at the end of the day.

alisonnbrown83 - 2 days ago
Welcome Week 12!

Danetteplusbaby - 2 days ago
sneaky works better for getting dads involved. I used to hype up how excited Sophie was for daddy to get home (when really a newborn doesn't show much that way) so hubby got excited and fell into the habit of playing with her right away. Now she really is excited and I get a break when he comes home as they play like puppies.

Danetteplusbaby - 2 days ago
LOL nice to know that I'm not the only person who turns slightly evil under all the hormones. Not sure that it's a good thing or not that poor hubby tends to get the brunt of it. I think he likes to help out every few weeks by doing something particularly stupid so I get to vent it all at once :OP (last week he touched my bags after being told not to 3 times and I drove an hour to cook a friend dinner to find important things were missing - serious groveling on his part). Atypical if you're anything like me watch out for the first several months after baby is born as well...my temper is shot on no sleep and new dads are clueless.

DeeRod - 2 days ago
I too had 'phantom kicks' after my son was born, for a few months. Wondered if it was the uterus going back to normal? I agree, I don't think these are baby flutters yet but it is amazing when you do feel it! And feels different from these early ?gas? flutters. I can't wait~I think it was around 20 weeks that I felt it...

Sweetbabyapt2 - 2 days ago
Bouza - Thanks so much for your advise. I tired the Doppler again but on both sides and you were totally right about being veins. I am going to see my doctor on Tuesday so I will see if he can locate the beat and walk me threw how I can find it. I will also ask him about the radiation. sweetadeline & bexandruby - I had the same feelings of kicks after I had my daughter. I wrote them off as phantom kicks.

bexandruby - 3 days ago
Sweetadeline, i had that too after giving birth, it went on for the first year! although it wasnt just flutters but actually felt like kicks. I have never heard anyone say they had the same thing. I wonder what that is? I used to think i was going crazy, i couldnt make out if it was all in my head or if it was something physical. Weird how it just stopped though. With regards to the doppler, thats interesting, i always use mine just now and again during my pregnancies if i need piece of mind but i thought it was just me being over cautious. It seems i have been doing the right thing! thanks for the info

sweetadeline - 3 days ago
By the way, to all those waiting to have scans and appts---hang in there, my last two pregnancies I had to wait until 20wks for my first scan so I feel your pain. It feels like forever now, but it will be here before you know it!
