You are now in your second trimester! Your baby's crown to rump length is 3.2 to 4.5 inches long and he weighs approximately 1 ounce now. Your baby is about the size of the average fist.
Now that you are into your second trimester, you may be starting the best part of your pregnancy. You will probably start to feel more energetic and you may get the `pregnancy glow`. Your uterus is beginning to swell week by week and you can follow its progress by locating the top of the uterus. The position of the top of the uterus will continue to gradually move up your abdomen, from beneath the pubic line to above your navel. Maternity clothes are probably necessary now. You might also experience hemorrhoids, which are painful dilated blood vessels around or inside the anus.
At this time, your baby's face is becoming more developed. The cheeks and bridge of his nose appear and the ears move from the sides of his neck to much higher on his head. The eyes continue to come closer together. A big development from this week onward is the development of lanugo. Lanugo is the fine hair that grows over almost your entire baby. The hairs grow in whirled patterns that follow the grain of his skin. These patterns later give way to your baby's fingerprints. The lanugo will be shed before birth and replaced by thicker, coarser hairs. Your baby's thyroid gland has matured and starts to produce hormones. If your baby is a boy, the prostate will appear and the ovaries descend from the abdomen into the pelvis in baby girls.
If you are having the Chorionic Villus sampling test (to check for Down's syndrome) it's done round about now.
The embryo`s soft cartilage is now being replaced with ` real` chalk bones.
Your baby has eyebrows, but no eyelashes. Fine, light hair also begins to grow.

Ok, I've just booked a gender scan for 10th of December.. I can't take the wait.. K Rae, I read your blog, glad everything is ok with the baby - complain about that rude nurse too, some people just should NOT work in the public sector..

Hi ladies! Its good to be in week 14. I had a little scare this week, but after a visit to the ER everything looks ok.
katiedyd20102 - 2 hours ago
pinkish: i would not be too worried if were you (yes, i know, coming from me, the biggest worrywart ever!!) but i think its still early to feel movement. i realize some women do, but i think the majority dont feel anything this early. i havent felt a thing yet, and not worried about that at all
katiedyd20102 - 2.1 hours ago
for all the ladies talking about insurance: dont you get as many scans as are 'medically necessary?' at least thats the term my insurance co. uses. this includes scans for dating, or if they use the doppler and dont hear the hb, then i get to have a scan, or if youre spotting and need to go in, etc...ive had 4 ultrasounds so far!!
alugo - 2.1 hours ago
LOL congrats Third, I hope it is right! I checked out your pic and I can see it horizonatally so woohoo! If my doc can't tell me on the 2nd I am deifinately booking a gender scan!
Third - 2.2 hours ago
On that site I just had the resident SONOGRAPHER check out my pic and she said she thinks girl!! I can't believe it! The pic I gave her is on my profile - the second picture, very clearly defined numb.. It'd be a DREAM if it really was a girl, apoparently, it's up to 75% accurate between 11-13 weeks... more accurate after 12.5 weeks.. I can't believe it, I want to know the gender NOW.. No way can I wait til the birth, I can't even wait til January 7th for my free 20 week scan, I'm going to book a gender scan for 2 weeks time and find out - I just can't bare the wait LOL
alugo - 3.1 hours ago
Third - I went to that website and then when i looked through all my pictures i realised that I didn't have one when he/she was laying down, only all curled up. BUT I CAN SEE THE NUB! lol so I will have to wait until next ultrasound.
alugo - 3.2 hours ago
Thinkpink, if it wasn't for your comment in wk 13 i would have totally forgot that I am actually in week 14 too lol. So thank you! :)
mackennas-mommy - 3.2 hours ago
I have an appointment on the 2cd of December. I will be 16 weeks. I know that their not going to do an ultrasound and if they end doing one for some apparent reason they wont even try to tell me what the gender is. They will make me wait until I'm 20 weeks. I think its quite goofy!
pinkish - 3.5 hours ago
Ladies i felt my lil one movement around 12weeks but lately(b4 2 weeks) i stopped feeling it ,n it stopped after i had ahigh fever ...IS IT SING FOR SOMETHING BAD !!!!!!! im really worried :(
CameronsMom - 4.3 hours ago
i-baby, I'm in the same boat you are because I have excellent insurance and I only get one scan at 20 weeks! What the heck! :) That's okay..soon enough we'll get to see what has been lurking inside! lol

hi everyone, well i had my first new baby dream of this pregnancy. it was a little girl with lite brown hair and dark gray/blue eyes...strange though in the dream i kept asking ppl where she was-didn't even know it was a girl-and they finally told me they had been keeping her out in the car under the seat...so i guess maybe a pregnancy nightmare! also i was in college then...i haven't been in college for 3 years...strange.

Just wantede to post this link - it's to a site which explains the 'nub theory' and trying to determine gender from a 12 week scan. VERY interesting.. My scan (on my profile, the second pic) suggests girl by the horizontal angle it's pointing, thats only if it's not part of a leg bone... I still feel like it's a boy anyway.. So I'm not getting my hopes up. Apparently, if interpreted correctly, there's a 75% chance it's correct.. go have a look and have a little fun staring furiously at your scan pictures LOL The all important link: http://www.parentdish.co.uk/2009/06/03/nub-theory-baby-gender-prediction-at-12-weeks/

Thanks ladies for the answer to my question!
CCTWifey - 22.7 hours ago
Katie - Actually, drinking while breastfeeding is even worse than drinking while pregnant due to the filtration process of pregnancy. Neither one is acceptable really, but for pregnancy, the blood that reaches the baby goes through your filtration system as well as through the placenta filtration before it reaches the baby... while breastfeeding, the milk is extremely vulnerable to every type of not desired substance because the mammary glands are completely surrounded by blood vessel which are the only filter for the blood. Thus, the blood is less filtered and more densely concentrated. Does that make sense? Sorry, it is hard to explain, but I am a biologist and have worked in human development for years.
CameronsMom - 22.8 hours ago
Mckennas, Your progesterone levels become very high during pregnancy which causes the mucous membranes in the nose to thin. It is extremely common to have blood tinged mucous when you blow your nose. I had it everyday with my first pregnancy and periodically with this one. I wouldn't worry at all. :)
mackennas-mommy - 23.2 hours ago
Katie, I have actually heard that drinking while breastfeeding does cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
katiedyd20102 - 23.3 hours ago
i have a question for anyone; can a child get 'fetal alcohol syndrome' not only during gestation, but also after the baby is BORN? the reason i ask this is because i know someone who was an alcholic and she breast fed her child until about 4 years of age. it was actually quite disgusting seeing her drink a beer in one hand and breast feed her child at the same time, but, morals aside, does anyone know if this has a very detrimental effect on the baby, drinking a lot while breastfeeding, that is? thanks (PS, i know this is WAY off topic, but you have all been so helpful in answering my questions, so im really curious to see what you all have to say).
mumof3soon2010 - 23.4 hours ago
mackennas mommy it could be a sinus infection as well.
katiedyd20102 - 23.5 hours ago
mackennas: i cant say it happens regularly but yes, every once in a while when i blow my nose a little blood is mixed in with the mucus. definitely more since ive been pregnant, but like i said happened maybe 3 times, so idk if its coincidence or what...
mackennas-mommy - 23.7 hours ago
I had a question for everyone... I have been experiencing blood in my nose every time I blow my nose... Have any of you experienced this and is it normal? Its not nose bleeds.. I'm also having headaches too.. blahh!

Hello ladies. for those of you with sore backs I found this tube like body pillow and I lay on my side and stick it behind my back it pretty much props you up on your side without any strain on your back, I've also got the flat type of body pillow for the from but I don't really use it since I got the other one for my back.

mumof3soon2010- i dont eat much all day either. the days im off from college i wake up at like 1 or 2 eat little snack. after awhile i might cook something like eggs or make rice. for dinner i have a fruit or two and try to drink alot of water or i drink soda with my meals. i do eat small snacks in between from the time i wake up and go to sleep.MY DH yells at me for sleep most of the day and not eating alot. I have college two days a week and when im up i at college all i want is to eat something. i have a bagel for breakfast and after a hour i would get a slice of pizza. and than after 2 hours i have salad or fries which ever i like that day.DH doesnt like me eating tooo much pizza so i dont tell him i had pizza. =)
mumof3soon2010 - 1 days ago
Can i just ask what everyone is eating during the day? I usually have a half of bagel for breakfast, 3 fig newtons for a snack lunch and dinner and thats it. my DH dosnt seem to think i am taking in enough calories, but i am already looking like i am five months preggo so idk..

Hello everyone! Welcome to week 14 for me! =D Had an appointment yesterday, and they FINALLY were able to pick up the heartbeat with the doppler! I was extatic!!! They haven't been able to pick it up yet, as they said I had a tilted uterus. I am such a worrier, and that really took a load off of me. I finally decided to start telling more people today....I am with you katie!! I have been really weird with it for some reason, even though i was so excited when I found out I was pregnant. I'm just so worried about the chance of m/c....believe me, I was quite tempted to just let my belly tell people eventually!! You tell people when you feel it is the right time, and don't let your best friends push you like mine did! =D Though I am okay with it now! Anyway, I'm still feeling quite exhausted...I was hoping this would magically go away today with it being the 2nd trimester! LOL, even though I know that everyone doesn't follow the book! =D

jenn and baby2inmay- you should try to go to a chiropracter...its really good for you and baby, just make sure they know your preg. and know how to work with you. and ps. it can help with digestive issues like bloating ;0)

Baby2inMay - I am extremley sore today, my back, my sides and all around my belly has been soooo sore today. I wasn't sure what was going on, thought maybe I'm just stretching out. It started last night and I woke up frequently then had to get up early to try a long hot shower to see if that would help. I also tried some tylenol this moring but that did nothing. I have been miserable all day today at work and the soreness just won't go away. I also feel extremley bloated and my pants feel really tight....ugh!!!
Baby2InMay - 1 days ago
Hello week 14 ladies! Is anyone else feeling sore and miserable??? My back all the way up to where my neck/skull connect is extremely sore. I cannot seem to sleep well at night and am constantly uncomfortable. Its really annoying and I wasn't able to schedule my prenatal massage until Dec 2. I also feel like I'm showing way too much for being 14wks 5days...I feel like I look 7 months pregnant. This is my second child but geez! Sorry, I'm just having a bad day and cannot wait until 5pm so I can at least go home and relax. Or try and relax because we have a 15 month old daughter who is the busiest little person on earth :)

Wow I just came from my DD school. The 1st graders had a huge thanksgiving feast (It was all kinds of finger foods and things kids will eat). It was so good. She was so happy I was able to go. I just took a extra long lunch break from work.

soon 2 be- That is just so different than mine! With my daughter I put salt salt salt on everything! Couldn't get enough, I loved chocolate too. This pregnancy I am craving veggies and breads like no tomorrow! Totally different than my daughter so I am hoping a boy too! haha
soon 2 b mom of 3 - 1 days ago
cct- yes i totally understand. I was only midly sick for a week or so with my girls and wanted nothing but fresh fruit and and veggies. now (even though oranges seem the execption) everything needs to be salty-i just dont understand. this preg. is totally different from either of my others...please be a boy!
CCTWifey - 1 days ago
2ndtimemom - oh goodness, our girl pregnancies were so different.... haha I guess it just goes to show me that there is no way to tell the differences in pregnancies for boys vs. girls. At least not between people, maybe for the same person, the pregnancies being so different will be a good sign?? It's a thought, a hopeful thought!

with my daughter, I was sick from day 1 to the end, my breasts were sore for a couple days. Still didn't give up my sweets. This one, I haven't been sick at all, my breasts were sore for a few weeks, now just very itchy (and at their worst at work, go figure). and I still have some sweets but not much. My mother never got sick with any of her 3 and my grandmother didn't get sick with any of her 6 so I'm wondering if it could be genetic in some way? Anyone know?
soon 2 b mom of 3 - 1 days ago
hey girls, she was wondering why her nipples were damp without leaking or seeing anything. you can make colostrum this earlier true- but more than likely, when your preg. your body make hormones that tell the ariola (the dark part around your nipple) to start to secrete a type of oil that helps to condition the breast before and during nursing, it helps to protect it. i have a wonderful book that explains sooo much and i recomend it to any soon to be mom even if they have kids already 'Your Pregnancy Week by Week' by Judith Shuler...its excellent!
2ndtimemom2010 - 1 days ago
katie, at this point, just wait another week or 2 and your belly will tell all for you, lol.
CCTWifey - 1 days ago
Oh and I posted some baby bump pics for anyone interested!
CCTWifey - 1 days ago
Mama and Third- I am kind of a mix of what you guys are saying which is making me a little nervous! With my daughter, I never felt sick or craved anything except salt. Now this time I was super sick early on and now I crave everything except sweets. Sweet things make me nauseated. My chest was never sore with my daughter and this pregnancy has been hurting from day one. Totally different symptoms this time and unintentionally we are thinking it may mean a boy which it could definitely be a girl just as well. Things are just so different than they were with my daughter, but... who knows!!!

bellababy2: to your question if anyone got offended by people constantly asking 'how are you feeling?' i get annoyed when my dad asks me that when i talk to him. ive told very few people, but one friend i just told the other day i feel will be one of those people (always looking at my belly, saying how are you, etc etc), and honestly it kinda bothers me. i know they just mean well, but i am NOT one of these people who want it all to just be about my pregnancy. i simply adore my best friend, cuz we go on about our life just like before i ever got pregnant, and its awesome! i mean, she'll ask about it and stuff, but only once in a while, which i appreciate, not every single time i talk to her. and thanks ladies for all the responses about the leaky breasts! it was certainly weird, but cool, to wake up and feel the dampness! and arrggh im still having a hard time telling people! no one in my family knows except my dad, and i really dont even want to tell anyone! i know my sisters are going to be SOOO mad that i didnt tell them sooner, i REALLY just dont want to deal with that!
Third - 1 days ago
Yeah my symptoms are WAY different. With boys I had SEVERE morning sickness for the first 3 hours upon waking, this time around I have all day nausea - some days I have none. My morning sickness with the boys lasted from week 6 to week 20 approx. Also, I dont have sore breasts this time around, I'm getting a few spots (I had no outbreaks with the boys) amd also, my wee is a different colour. I know that last one sounds dumb, but my first morning wee with the boys was practically illuminous yellow, this time it's like a dull orange.. Also, I have food cravings this pregnancy, I never craved ANY food my last two pregnancies.. It doesn't change the fact though, I saw my baby on screen at the 12 week ultrasound and I just felt overwhelmingly it was a boy..
