Born & Birth stories

Your baby's weight has doubled in two weeks and now weighs about 3.5 ounces! The crown-to-rump length of your growing baby is 4.4 to 4.8 inches. If you spread your hand out opened wide, you can see about how big your baby is.

Your uterus is moving up and is now approximately 1.5 to 2 inches below your navel. You are showing more now and there is a noticeable swelling in your abdomen. At this point in your pregnancy, a 5 to 10 pound weight gain is normal. Other people can probably feel the difference in your lower abdomen if they were to rub your tummy. To be the most comfortable, you should be wearing maternity clothes or clothing that is too large for you. You may have felt your baby move already. However, you might not feel it move every day at this point. As your pregnancy progresses, movements become stronger and more frequent. Feeling your baby move can help reassure you that your baby is doing well. You might also notice that your gums or nose bleed occasionally. This is from the increased blood volume that puts pressure on small blood vessels and capillaries.

Huge changes continue to take place within your developing baby. This week fat begins to form and will continue to do so until he is born. Fat is important to the body's heat production and metabolism. Right now, at 17 weeks, water makes up about 3 ounces and fat 0.018 ounces of your baby's body. In a baby at term, fat makes up about 5.25 pounds of the total average weight of 7.7 pounds. The placenta is continuing to grow at an amazing rate. The placenta will continue to develop in tandem with the fetus and it will weigh more than a pound at birth! By this week, the placenta is large and well established with a network of blood vessels that exchange nutrients and waste.

The eyes are facing more forward. The ears are now close to their final position.

Your baby is more flexible with ability to move head, mouth, lips, arms, wrists, hands, legs, feet, and toes.

Fingerprints are forming now.

readyfor2 It feels good. Its so funny I had read a wee while ago someone posting that their first baby used kick against matress from their tummy, I lay for ages laughing as mine did it earlier. I have been a it down and had a kidney infection but feeling decidedly better after that and a wee day at the shops with my mum and gran.

I get to find out in 2 weeks what my baby is!!! I have a gut feeling it's a boy.... Anyone else feel their little sea monkey swimmin around yet? I'm pretty sure mine was partying in my belly tonight! It felt like someone running their finger on the inside of my belly !! Like nothing I've ever felt before !!!

sheenabeana - 2 days ago
Woohoo!!! Finally in week 17!! I am very excited!! I have a Doc Appointment on Monday..YAY!! Hopefully, *fingers crossed* he will send me for an ultra sound and I can find out what we are having!!! Once we find out I am so excited to get started with everything..being this is my first it is still not really registering..even though it is going by fast at the same time I can't imagine what it is going to be like..lol. But I feel great, and can't wait for April!! Anywho, hope all you ladies are doing wonderful!

sweetksgirl - 2 days ago
Eek..my hubby is giving them to me at home, he's a medic in the army so I trust him but no one said it would hurt more than a normal shot! :( and yes I hope I don't have another 31weeker, that was tramatic! ...but do u worry about going super long?? Having a huge baby that nature wouldn't intend for you to have?

karlimcreynolds - 2 days ago
sweet- i start getting the shot starting tuesday... my dr says its painful but if will help me not have my child at 25 weeks again ill do it... im nervous im praying it works. =)

destinyz-own - 2 days ago

skittles0607 - 2 days ago
Sweetksgirl- I can feel where the baby too. its such a nice feeling. In the morning when I go to listen to hte hb i will feel around and can feel the hard lunp where the baby is.. It is great. I have been feeling the baby for a few weeks now. Every once in awhile it gives me a big kick. But this is my 5th pregnancy praying it will be our 3rd birth..

sweetksgirl - 2 days ago
Meant growing* not going...oh and is anyone else starting progestrone shots this week?

sweetksgirl - 2 days ago
Skittles...I've been having some light cramping too, but I had it all throughout my last pregnancy, it was mostly just my uturus going..and this time its not as bad but I do feel it. And I can really feel where the baby is now, and it is just a little more than an inch bellow my belly button, its exciting :) still not feeling much movement though. And sazzy whenever I get that being preg its normally gas, esp if it only last for a few seconds lol or like she said could be ligaments streching. Yay for 17wks today..its going by so fast for me!

emsgutz - 2 days ago
saxxybelle. I would always bring it up to your Dr but, yes they are normal. This is my 2nd pregnancy and I've gotten them with both. As long as they are just here and there you know they are stretching pains, organs are moving and things get knocked around, sat on, and pinched inside of you. It takes some getting used to. However, if it last for 1-2 minutes at a time and happends every 5 -15 minutes regularly....go to the Dr becasue regular pains and cramping could be Braxton Hicks contractions and it's still pretty early for those.

sazzybelle - 2 days ago
Hi M2B!i am new to the site and 17 and a half weeks pregnant with my first baby, but i did lose one before in the early stages around 12 weeks.Just wondering if anyone else is getting really sharp pains in stomach/back?? I have today which passed after about a minute, is this normal?x

mommy3nc - 2 days ago
Hello all.I just had a baby girl last Oct. 24th and we are expecting again.Got preg. again when she was 9mos old.We have 3 girls, and hoping for a boy this time.My poor husband feels outnumbered, but he is a great dad. This is the 1st pregnancy I havent been able to eat meat...or anything else 4 that matter.I also have only had 1 pregnancy dream weeks ago abt. seeing a boy on US.Guess b/c I feel so drained(still nursing daughter). But,have been feeling lil one bump me for a week or 2 now.Its cute but,I'm dreading delivery again so soon lol.My 1st was 9lbs9oz second was 10lbs even and 3rd was 6lbs13oz.Hoping for a 6-8pounder this time too.Ive always delivered vaginally, and man....those big ones are work!Hope all is going well 4 everyone.

skittles0607 - 2 days ago
For those who know what you are having, have u gone on the gender predictor sites and got the same results??

skittles0607 - 2 days ago
Haven- I have had some on and off cramping. Nothing serious just some light stuff. It kind of felt like a pulling burning feeling.. Not sure. But it is probally normal because of all the growing.

thelioness - 2 days ago
Ok ladies I am so stressed out and and emotional wreck, I need 2 vent but don't want 2 rain on anyones parade or get any spirits down. So if anyones willing 2 lend a listening ear and some advise please get back 2 me. By the way hope everyone is having excellent pregnancies!! Last week flew by 4 me so excited! Can't wait 2 meet my lil one! And btw I am also waiting until birth 2 find out. But I've always wanted my 1st 2 be a girl and I don't really think it gonna be one or the other but inside I guess I'm rooting a lil 4 a girl. But EVERYBODY else thinks its a boy so the odds r against me.

readyfor2 - 2 days ago
Jerbear - my first pregnancy was with a boy, this time it's a girl. the pregnancies are VERY similar, but there a few differences. the girl baby's HB this time is always 145 and up, my son's was laways in 130's. I crave the same foods, but I want apples and oj this time too, I am moodier this time and my boobs got HUGE, my belly looks different too.

roxymom - 2 days ago
Had my 2nd u/s today.....couldnt find out the sex because the babies legs were crossed :( but dr thinks its a girl because of the heartbeat sooo that made my day...I do get to go back on the 19th for another u/s they couldn't see everything they needed to see its very active and facing forward :) it was a great day!

Nikki Lee - 2 days ago
I finally out up my belly pics, missed some which is a shame but never mind:) Hope everyone is well!!

JerBear - 2 days ago
OHH i also had to add... its my sons birthday today!!!! he is one years old! i cant belive it! how they grow soo fast! Happy Birthday Tanner!! mommy loves you! xoxoxox

JerBear - 2 days ago
Congratulations on your little girl!!! thats awesome! and so exciting! i cant wait until i find out on the 18th. Has anyone been having almost the EXACT same pregnancy and it came out different genders?! i feel like its the exact same in every way....should i expect another boy?? and i also do not feel any movement really, im not worried though, i see my belly growing and i dont stress about it!! good luck to everyone!

ITS A GIRL!!!! Ava Rose!

twins-oh-boy - 3 days ago
tabathan and vanessalynn- I too feel exhausted. By the end of the work day I am literally dragging. All I can think about is getting home and resting. I don't seem to sleep too well either. I have had some terrible nightmares. Two nights ago I dreamt that I was trapped in a room with a crazy man that had a machine gun. He told me he was going to shoot both me and my 14 month old daughter that I was holding. I had to decide who he should shoot first. I woke up so upset that I could not go back to sleep for an hour. Then of course, when the alarm went off, I was exhausted. These pregnant dreams are freaking me out. Why can't I dream about babies, kittens and running in a beautiful field full of sunflowers? Hee! Hee!

arinfirsttimemom - 3 days ago
mumof2and1ontheway- I haven't felt my baby yet either. I'm not concerned though, I have an in home doppler to monitor the heart rate and that gives me reassurance that everything is ok. I am happy to wait for noticable movement, it makes me think when I finally do notice it they may be frequent and hopefully strong. Everything I have read says don't worry about not feeling the baby, many people don't until 20 weeks. Hang in there... it's all pretty amazing how all of this is happening so fast =)

haven1095 - 3 days ago
My baby must hate sweets since day one I vomite everytime I eat anything sweet even ice tea.I guess its a good thing since I love sweets normally.

haven1095 - 3 days ago
Got a little worried today because I haven't felt any movement in two days but felt a flutter after supper. I think i pay to much attention.I love ice water all the time with my daughter it was ice.I wish this reflex would stop but it only gets worse.Anyone have light period like cramps? I do but they are light and far between.

mumof2and1ontheway - 3 days ago
i am on lovenox and have an extremely dangerous blood disorder and i am considerably high risk as well jenette i wish they will let me see my baby every 2 weeks but they don't i only had 1 sonogram and it looked great at my 15th week and have another when i turn 21 weeks im going to have a c-section again and i am scared,

goingtobemomof3 - 3 days ago
I am 18 weeks tomarrow and and still don't know the gender of my baby. I wont even know when I get my U?S untill next tuesday. At first I was a little upset that I had to wait so long and everyone is finding out so soon. Now I am feeling good about my doctors decision it is giving me something 'sooner' to look forward to other that the long away birth. Plus it is fun to hear all of the predictions from friends, family and these silly quizes. Don't get me wrong I am very anxious to know if we will FINALLY be having a boy but it also helps me to not start spending a bunch of money right before christmas. lol

Jenette - 3 days ago
i get ultrasounds every two weeks, because I am high risk, so its kind of a bitter sweet thing, because i have so many more things to worry about then those who are having a normal pregnancy. Yeah I get to see my baby every two weeks, which is the sweet part of the whole thing...but like i said there is a lots of things that I have to worry about... so take it as you are a normal pregnancy and everything is fine. good luck to you all and trust your doctors, and make sure you communicate every little thing you feel to them...

mumof2and1ontheway - 3 days ago
hey ladies im new on here and just looking for some support,i been trying for a baby for a while now and my youngest child is now 5yrs old and im finally pregnant again and so happy, im 17 weeks and 3 days still the sex is unknown but i have an u/s on the 30th of this month where i'll be 21 weeks,,i feel no kicks yet and im very scared because my other 2 pregnancies i felt them very early anybody else still waiting for those kicks and flutters??

Anita10 - 3 days ago
Turner24, don't be jealous! Here, they give the U/S between 19 and 22 weeks! I was suppose to have mine Nov.24th but because I had some complications I had an emergency U/S. I know my baby is a boy since then.

Jenette - 3 days ago
hey ladies... I woke up feeling horriable... i had a class @ 7:30 in the morning, and i so did not go... i have the worst back pain. It is my lower back.. i feel like I nolonger can have a comfortable night sleep..

skittles0607 - 3 days ago
According to the online predictor tests I am having a girl. That matches my 2 dreams I had but I havnt found out the sex yet.

3rdbabyat38 - 3 days ago
Hi ladies, I am dropping in from week 19. I might only be at week 18 but won't know until I have my u/s on Nov. 25... Most are finding out what the sex of the baby is alread, I know that some have already found out in week 17 also... I have a question for all, like me who are having to wait until 20-22 weeks to find out. O.k, have any of you purchased gender prediction products? Intelligender or used Fortune Baby Gender Prediction which is based on Mother and Father's b-days and due date of the baby? If so I would love some feedback on what you thought about them. Please leave a comment on my profile. Maybe some of you are eager like myself and enjoy these fun things... I am hoping for a boy but will be thrilled with a girl too. Thanks for your help.

mumof2and1ontheway - 3 days ago

Im so jealous that all of your huys Doctors will tell you the gender at 17 weeks, my Dr is maing me wait tile im at least 20 Weeks. I will get to know what my little monkey is at 22 weeks on Dec 11.. Anyhoo congrats to all of you that have nice Dr that will tell you so soon!! I think my Dr is just making me wait cos he knows i wanna know so bad! Or it could be because he is a perfectionist and has been a ob/gyn for 18 yrs and has only been wrong 6 times!!

sarah l - 3 days ago
