Born & Birth stories

Your baby's weight has doubled in two weeks and now weighs about 3.5 ounces! The crown-to-rump length of your growing baby is 4.4 to 4.8 inches. If you spread your hand out opened wide, you can see about how big your baby is.

Your uterus is moving up and is now approximately 1.5 to 2 inches below your navel. You are showing more now and there is a noticeable swelling in your abdomen. At this point in your pregnancy, a 5 to 10 pound weight gain is normal. Other people can probably feel the difference in your lower abdomen if they were to rub your tummy. To be the most comfortable, you should be wearing maternity clothes or clothing that is too large for you. You may have felt your baby move already. However, you might not feel it move every day at this point. As your pregnancy progresses, movements become stronger and more frequent. Feeling your baby move can help reassure you that your baby is doing well. You might also notice that your gums or nose bleed occasionally. This is from the increased blood volume that puts pressure on small blood vessels and capillaries.

Huge changes continue to take place within your developing baby. This week fat begins to form and will continue to do so until he is born. Fat is important to the body's heat production and metabolism. Right now, at 17 weeks, water makes up about 3 ounces and fat 0.018 ounces of your baby's body. In a baby at term, fat makes up about 5.25 pounds of the total average weight of 7.7 pounds. The placenta is continuing to grow at an amazing rate. The placenta will continue to develop in tandem with the fetus and it will weigh more than a pound at birth! By this week, the placenta is large and well established with a network of blood vessels that exchange nutrients and waste.

The eyes are facing more forward. The ears are now close to their final position.

Your baby is more flexible with ability to move head, mouth, lips, arms, wrists, hands, legs, feet, and toes.

Fingerprints are forming now.

Its hot here too, no rain in over a month. But suppose to rain tomorrow! We already celebrated the 4th since hubby has to work tonight, so me and the kids are just chilling in the AC today! I have been stuffing my face with strawberries all day though!!

J-lynn - 2 hours ago
everyone seems to be having hot weather! yesterday we broke our own record for the longest heat streak of over 100 degree weather its been like this since mid of may here and the only rain we got was a little drizzle last week, just enough to make it hotter!!

i.cant.wait - 2.4 hours ago
Angicat - that SUCKS. I have the opposite over here! This weather is waaay too hot and dry, I hate the heat. I had planned a bbq and to go to the beach but I think I'm going to end up staying at home w. The a/c full blast. Grrrrr. Happy 4th. =T

i.cant.wait - 2.5 hours ago
Rspackman - I am also relieved to know someone else is going through this. At my 16 week appt. I asked my doctor if it was normal not to be showing at all or a little more somedays than others and she said yes. On the other hand I get a little sad because I see other expectant mommies with their cute little baby bellies and I'm like... why don't I have that yet?? I just feel fat. Owell, soon enough I guess. I just want a healthy baby in the end. :) on another note: I asked a few women in my family when they saw a noticeable, constant baby belly and the most common response was about 5 months or a little over.

angicat1 - 2.5 hours ago
urgh i am so irritated today. we have had 100 degree weather for almost a month no rain and today of all days it decides its going to rain all day. granted we need the relief but why....... now no cook out, no fireworks on the river without getting drenched.... just my luck we have been waiting to watch the fireworks. our city spent 60000 dollars on the air show this year.

i.cant.wait - 2.6 hours ago
SDB - at your 18 wk ultrasound they should be able to tell you the sex of your baby, that is usually what the appt. Is for + to measure and check for any possible deffects. I have my appt. To find out the gender at 18.5 weeks. BUT at 15 weeks I got a 3D ultrasound which told me I was having a boy. IF for some reason they are not able to tell you the gender you should try for a 3D ultrasound, I would def. Recommend one of those.

mommyagain3 - 4.1 hours ago
mine start to swell up if I dont keep them up, Im going to call the Dr. Monday and see what they say, last visit my blood pressure was high.

vicky24 - 4.2 hours ago
I noticed the other day that my feet were swollen but thats about it thank god lol

mommyagain3 - 4.3 hours ago
I cant wait to find out the sex! Is anyone else having swelling in feet and calves? I have been for the last few days!

mamacas26 - 4.4 hours ago
1st - My hubby wants to find out, but I just told him no! He also wanted to get our son (previous pregnancy) circumsized, and I said no on that one too. I'm not the ruler of the house, but I know I can put my foot down when I feel really strongly about something. If my hubby really objects he'll say something, and in these two cases he didn't, so I got/getting my way. Hey, we have to do all the hard work of pregnancy and birth, the most they could give us is the enjoyment of a surprise!

1stpregnancy - 4.4 hours ago
Ahaha thanks Pooka, thats what I was thinking too! I think it would be so exciting to wait at the very last moment to see if you get a boy or a girl, but on the other hand its nice knowing for planning the baby room and stuff.

pooka - 4.5 hours ago
1st i think if you don't want to find out you shouldn't. Your the one pushing the baby out and if you want the surprise well your boyfriend should just suck it up LOL!!!

pooka - 4.5 hours ago
mom.to.all.boys - are you or have you found out sex yet? I know a few moms with lots of boys on here and can't remember!

1stpregnancy - 4.6 hours ago
Yay first day in week 17 and I think I felt the baby move yesterday, its like he/she was doing kartwheels or something! My first ultrasound in July 13 and i can't wait. I don't want to find out the sex but my bf really wants too. Anyone have this problem too? I am not sure what to do..

pooka - 4.6 hours ago
wow hi week 17ers I can't believe how fast this pregnancy is moving along! Although I am sure once Sept hits it will go at a stand still LOL. I will enjoy it as it lasts. So far everything is great I feel great and hope you are all finding the same!

rspackman - 5.7 hours ago
icantwait- I read your comment about it being your first and some days your bump is bigger than others...THANK GOODNESS! It's my first too and I have the same thing. I go in Monday for heartbeat and weight checkup, so I was going to ask her about it, but it does make me feel better that the same thing is going on with others!

SDBELH - 5.8 hours ago
Hello Ladies, I will be 18 weeks on monday, and on Wednesday I will go for another sonogram,so does anyone know when I will be able to know what im having with this sono, and only being at 18 weeks?

babykake - 11.7 hours ago
well its my last day in week 17 im so happy to be going up another week and its only 2 weeks untill the big u/s oh wow i cant wait

i.cant.wait - 15.2 hours ago
Julieisexpecting - I know u said this is your 1st pregnancy... mine too. Are you showing yet??? One day ill have a slight bump and the next day nothing. Omg I have been on this site like all day today... my first day too. I guess it doesn't help that I access from my cell huh!

julieisexpecting - 15.6 hours ago
I got a really bad cold when I was 6 weeks pregnant. I hadn't taken a pregnancy test and just thought I was late... I ended up taking some cold medicine for about 4 days. The baby has checked out just fine in the two ultrasounds I've had. I try not to get worked up over stuff like that. I just keep hoping for a healthy baby.

angicat1 - 16.4 hours ago
alllison i have been on zofran with all my pregnancies and all babies turned out fine. my doc says its regularly prescribed during pregnancy and considered safe. i worry more about using tylenol and otc meds for colds and stuff than i do about what is prescribed for me. is your nausea getting any better

julieisexpecting - 16.5 hours ago
i.cant.wait - Lucky you!! I've only felt mine twice... Hoping to feel again tonight!!

i.cant.wait - 17 hours ago
Julieisexpecting - I am glad to hear you are feeling the same thing. This too is my 1st pregnancy and it definetely isn't small flutters that I am feeling. The only thing is I only feel it like once a day (not sure if that is normal) but atleast I'm feeling something... I was worried for a bit =T Exciting!

julieisexpecting - 17.5 hours ago
i.cant.wait - Last night when the baby was moving a bunch it did feel like twitching, but then I realized where it was located was most likely the baby. Then it started to feel more like a thumping. My husband could feel it... so i'm certain it was the baby. This is my first so I'm surprised to have identified the movement so early on. Congrats on your movements!

rosieposie - 17.9 hours ago
woh, I asked that question like supre late! lol. Okay so its for morning sickness. Okay. :)

rosieposie - 18.2 hours ago
WHAT IS THAT FOR?

mom.to.all.boys - 18.2 hours ago
i.cant.wait I would say yes that is baby I really don't know why they call it flutters I never felt what I would call flutters it felt more like bubbles popping in my lower belly.

i.cant.wait - 18.4 hours ago
Allisonshai - I looked into zofran, since it is prescribed for morning sickness etc. And has never proven unsafe I'm sure your baby will be fine. :) I understand your worry though. Question: I am not sure if I am feeling my baby move. I read about what you're supposed to feel and I don't feel that but what else could it be? I read I would feel a 'butterfly' feeling in my stomach instead I feel something that is more along the lines of small thumps and inner twitching which I can feel about 1 inch under my belly botton. Is that my baby?? I don't know if its too early to feel anything especially since I am not showing... at all!

allisonshai - 18.9 hours ago
icantwait- im worried about birth defects because ive been on 4 mg of zofran daily since about week 9. supposedly its safe, but i still worry.

anitaaus - 19.4 hours ago
DecPeanutMom - I haven't ever had spotting before but I know my sister did at a similar time to you and the doctor's dismissed it and said everything was fine - she went on to have a beautiful little boy on her due date so try not to worry. At 17 weeks miscarriage is virtually impossible so you should feel safe, I am sure your baby is doing fine. Bubba 5 I am still not feeling kicks but am starting to detect where the baby is by various little bulges that I can feel if I put a little pressure either side of the area immediately below my belly button. julieisexpecting - as I am in the southern hemisphere it is winter here and baths are very tempting. I have had quite a dew but I keep my tummy above the water. I did the same with my other two children who are also December babies - perhaps your little one wanted you back in there?? hehe

mom.to.all.boys - 21.2 hours ago
All the boys wanted to go four wheel'n today so I was a happy camper and went to cheer them on it ended up raining which we need but every one ended up covered in mud piled in the truck to come home and not to mention the mess in the bathroom...UGH! Tomorrow they are going racing out of town which will be nice I get the whole house to myself for the fourth of July and I can't wait! What is everyone else doing?

mom.to.all.boys - 21.3 hours ago
So I think the baby is more active around 3pm I have tried to feel it from the out side but have only been able to once I want my hubby to feel it I guess he will have to wait I am just happy to be feeling little kicks finally!

i.cant.wait - 21.4 hours ago
HI! I am new here, and very glad I finally signed up. This is my first pregnancy. I turned 17 weeks on Wed. =) I found out at my 3d ultrasound at 15 weeks that I am having what I wanted, A BOY. YAY! Anyway I came on here because I wanted to see if any other expectant mommies are worried like I am about birth deffects? I have been doing too mcuh reading and I have looked too far into 'amniotic band syndrome' is anybody else experiencing these worries?? I try to talk to my boyfriend about it but he really doesn't understand. At my 3d ultrasound the tech. Didn't seem THAT knowledgeable, she didn't know what band syndrome was. I go in for my first ultrasound at kaiser in 2.5 weeks. =/ thanks for reading this ladies!

mom.to.all.boys - 21.9 hours ago
J-lynn that is colostrum it is fine we probably all have it a little at this time.

julieisexpecting - 22.7 hours ago
Last night was so amazing! I decided to not be afraid and take a luke warm bath (my first one since being pregnant). I soaked it up for about 8 minutes, then got out to know I was keeping myself safe for the baby. After that I came and laid on the couch next to my husband and all the sudden I felt the baby kicking me like crazy!! I told my husband then I grabbed his hand and held it where the baby was kicking. It was so fun, it was the first time he got to feel the baby kick! He was truly amazed!

daylizmom - 23.2 hours ago
This is my last day in week 17 yay!!!! I am excited! I also am experiencing something that is not so exciting I have always been allergic to certain things such as bananas and grapes and pollen. It seems that now that I am pregnant I have become allergic to things in which I was never allergic before. These things include my watch which I have worn so many times and My favorite detergent :( The doctor tells me that once I have the baby I will most likely be able to wear my watch again which is fine but my skin has become sooooo sensitive that is is annoying. On the contrary, I am looking forward in joining week 18 tomorrow..See u there!!

Thunderstorms 3 days in a row so far. UGH I hate it. I have only been swimming once so far this summer. And my MIL has a inground pool. My daughter still has yet to go swimming for the first time, it was to cold for her.

jynxxd - 1 days ago
J-Lynn, it's perfectly normal. I was a little off put when I started leaking. But i's normal :)

J-lynn - 1 days ago

Hi ladies! I've been lurking for a while...actually my mom told me about this site. She loves reading all your stories and I'm sure I'll get a call over the next few days asking if this is my profile *lol*. I've come out of lurking because I find this to be such a supportive crowd and I could use some support today. Short story is that I'm pregnant with my 1st after 2 early miscarriages in 2008 (just over 4 weeks and just over 5 weeks). I had some spotting at 9 weeks with this pregnancy (brown like with my miscarriages) but all was fine and the baby continued to develop and grow. Today I'm 17 weeks + 5 days and I saw some brown tinged discharge on my underwear (sorry if TMI) so of course I'm losing my mind. Dr's office is closed until Monday and because I'm completely neurotic now that I saw the spotting I'm convinced I have cramps. Any words of encouragement? I know in my heart it will be fine, but try telling that to my worry-wart brain...

rspackman - 1 days ago
mamacas- I Love that show! I watch it all the time! Lol. That and Deliver me play on Tuesdays all new episodes... So crazy though. Pretty amazing what our bodies can do and how some women can go alomst full term and not even expect pregnancy!

carriebaby888 - 1 days ago
hello everyone!!! day one in weeks 17 and I am FINALLY starting to look pregnant instead of fat!!!! YAYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!

bubba-5 - 2 days ago
Hey I'm with you anitaaus. I think I have felt bub mayb twice over the past week or so, but definately no frequent movements. Can't wait to feel those little kicks. Although I remember thinking the same with my other pregnancies and never felt them til atleast 18weeks or further. And absolutely joining in the with the sore breasts, doesn't help my little one keeps bumping them :)When does this tenderness usually ease? I can't remember?

julieisexpecting - 2 days ago
I'm totally ready for week 18!! On Wednesday I'm going to book in at the hospital. I get to find out exactly how much it's going to cost me to have the baby and I secure my spot to deliver at the hospital. Then on Friday I go to have my fetal morphology ultrasound and I get to find out the sex!! I'm soooooo excited!! I think we've decided to keep the sex a secret from everyone and make it a surprise.

Babythreeindecember - 2 days ago
Well this is my last day in week 17. I will see you all in week 18!

mamacas26 - 2 days ago
An 'I didn't know I was pregnant' marathon is playing on TLC right now...

anitaaus - 2 days ago
Thank you ladies, well I am glad to know I am not the only one with the big boobs issue. I lashed out on some Clavin Klein bras when I got bigger about a month ago but, lo and behold, I just spill out of the top of them now - it is ridiculous! I always used to lament my breasts never grew with my two girls but not this time! It is funny because with every new symptom someone always attributes it to being a little boy - oh that would be wonderful but I am not counting on it. I also agree with the lower pelvic pains, I get them a lot, particularly at the sides. I still don't really know if I have felt this baby yet, not like many of you others seem to be experiencing. I did really panic the other day though as I fell asleep with the electric blanket on - it was only 3 out of a potential 9 but it still freaked me out! Hope my beloved little one is OK! And the rest of you!

rspackman - 2 days ago
angicat-welcome to my world of small boobs! lol. My boobs hurt, but I haven't out grown any bra's yet. My husband keeps joking around about when is the good part going to start? ha ha Anyone have dogs? My two puppies keep sniffing my boobs. Just recently really. Maybe they can smell the changes going on? I know dogs can smell cancer, etc because of hormonal and chemical changes..It's great when they sniff my husbands jewels! He gets all nervous! Pretty funny!

just wanted to say hi.. im new to this site.. and am 17 weeks pregnant with my 3rd child.. feeling movements often. and loving it...

Erica93 - 2 days ago
hello everyone! And welcome to all the new members! I finally had my final feeding with Isabella last night-kinda sad, but it needed to be done. You all are talking about sore breasts, I have them plus I was nursing. It had gotten pretty painful so I needed to stop! Otherwise I have been good. Had two pieces of cake today and no guilt!!
