Born & Birth stories

Your baby's blood circulation is completely functional. The umbilical cord system continues to grow and thicken as blood travels with considerable force through the body to nurture the baby. The placenta is now almost equal in size to the baby.

Your baby will be getting much larger during the second half of your pregnancy. Your baby's crown-to-rump length at this time is 7.2 inches and she weighs approximately 10.5 ounces. Your growing baby is about the size of a large banana. You should be able to feel your uterus about a half of an inch above your navel. Your weight gain so far will be around 10 to 15 pounds.

As your baby begins to lay down more fat, your weight will also increase. During the next 10 weeks, you will gain about half of the total gain for your entire pregnancy. Strangers can now tell that you are pregnant! You might notice an increase in appetite because you need 500 more calories a day to support your charged up metabolism. It is best to avoid processed foods or foods high in fat, calories or sugar. Some women also get strong cravings for foods. If you notice a craving for something unhealthy, you should contact your doctor. Craving for unusual things is known as pica. Some women crave cigarette ashes, charcoal, beer and other non-food items during this time.

Your baby's different organs and systems are maturing. The fetal digestive system is functioning in a simple way and your baby can swallow amniotic fluid. After your baby swallows the amniotic fluid, she is able to absorb water and sugars from the fluid and then the waste is passed as far as the large bowel. Your baby swallows the amniotic fluid in order to prepare itself for life outside of the womb. Some babies consume as much as 17 ounces of amniotic fluid in a 24-hour period. Your baby already has a high number of red blood cells and the white blood cells are beginning to be produced. Taste buds are being formed on your baby's tongue this week also.

Don't be surprised if your legs and feet become swollen throughout the day. You should try to get off of your feet some throughout the day and prop your legs up. If you notice a substantial amount of swelling, you should contact your healthcare provider for evaluation.

Hi all-- hope everyone is having a great saturday. Though today was going to be a nice relaxing day with the family until my LO (20 months) fell and hit his forhead on the corner of the stairs. We had to take him to the ER and he got 4 stitches. Poor guy. Fortunately we are finally home and poor guy is taking a nice long nap while mom and dad try to cheer up with the childrens movie UP and some pizza. Prob wont be on much more tonight! Looking forward to more time spend with yall on Monday!

marie- have went shopping today also i bought lots of onies an i bought sleepers. i bought a few long sleves an pants for the fact that its still kinda clod in april.but sson as summer gets her she will always be in dresses.lol

titangoddess - 3.5 hours ago
LOL.. just googled that about sleeping. WOW! My doctor was right but I found it was at 28wks they started to have sleep cycles that are actually considered sleep, true sleeping consists of REM cycles. Now can someone find out why? LOL..

KMarieH - 3.5 hours ago
So I bought my first baby girl outfit. I am very excited. Not sure though on sleves and or shorts for this kid as it will be almost spring and I'm not sure how fast she'll grow. This considering my son is almost 22 months and is wearing 12 mo. pants and just fitting into 18mo shirts. I'm just too excited!

titangoddess - 3.6 hours ago
I had a doctor tell me this. He said that a fetus does not really start to sleep in the womb till you are past 26wks. This came around after my u/s and the baby would not stop moving. I suggested we wait a minute to let her go to sleep and the u/s doctor said they didnt sleep instead they rested. I was intrigued so asked my doctor about it at my next appointment. He confirmed that she was right, they dont actually start sleeping till 26 wks. Now he could not tell me why this was but he said it was. Interesting huh?

wildbunch-i dont think i would be so mad if my brother had a job or a car or even his own place to live he is a bum.he lives with his girlfriend who still lives with her father neither one of them work so how do they think they can take care of a baby!! i am just pissed because they are to young to have kids an sure ass hell not mature enough.but whatever there not getting help from me..sometimes i wish i would drive the 10 hours to see him an kick him in his ass!!!

wildbunch - 6.9 hours ago
Ha Ha Chula - That is funny. It is always a competition in my husband's family as to who has a kid first. I couldn't care less, probably b/c I'm always the first one. My husband's mom and two sisters just found out Thursday that I'm expecting. They had no idea. His older sister is due a week or two after me. I don't think they were very happy to find out I'm pregnant, especially since we kept it secret from them for so long. My MIL said CONGRATS to me but I get the feeling she was kind of hurt that we didn't tell her sooner.

AndaBabyMakesThree - 7.1 hours ago
Has anyone noticed that their baby has a schedule already? My little one seems to really wake up every morning around 9:30, regardless of what I'm doing. He's awake for at least an hour or so and then asleep for several. He always wakes up when I eat. Have you ladies noticed these definate sleep/wake patterns in your little ones?

oliviasmom510 - 7.4 hours ago

LOL.. my dh was watching OLN (Outdoor Life Network) while I was laboring. I was so mad that as soon as I gave birth I screamed at him to turn that crap off! It really did not bother me that he watched it while I was in labor though, it was the birth that got me. I looked up inbetween pushes, only pushed two times though, and some poor deer was running for his life... I was ticked off needless to say. I found concentration worked best for me. I went into myself, and I am so not yoga bear LOL, and had a mental image of my son descending and it worked. I know that does not work all the time but with me it worked great. I knew that each contraction would be over with so I just made it where I thought of that moment and only that moment. It got me to the next moment and so on and so forth. I told my dh a few hours later that I could actually do that over and over again and it would not bother me. It was so perfect. I hope everyone has a simular experience with birth as I had with my last.

phonics - From what I understand, it's not that the husband/partner needs the support, but it takes some of the pressure off of them and makes them feel a little more relaxed during labor and delivery. You know how men like to fix things, right? Well in that sense I imagine it's hard for them to see their partners in very much pain without knowing how to help the pain. I think the doula would help him to deal with what's going on and to guide him in supporting me so that he is more capable of 'fixing it' and that in turn would make him feel like he's contributing in a positive way to the birth. It also is a great way to get him involved and informed in coaching me and comforting me. I made some inquiries last night to several different doulas and have gotten several email responses from them. Prices seem to vary greatly based on experience and reputation. So far, for my area the price range has been between $500 and $1500. I plan to set up some interviews and see if we 'click' with any of them. My mother-in-law is planning to collect donations from all of my husband's out of town family (which is everyone) for a doula since they wont be able to come to a baby shower. She did this for my husband's brother and it was a great success. In fact, she collected double what the doula cost, so the extra money went straight towards other things they needed. MIL seemed very happy that she could contribute, and everyone else was very generous and loved to contribute in such a unique way. :-)

Mommy... I didn't even know you can take robitussin...

mommy of 2 boys - 21.5 hours ago
i had a question, i broke out with hives this morning after taking Robitussin last night before bed, which has never happened before, but i was wondering if i could take Benadryl to control the itching. cause nothing i do seems to work.

My husband wanted to hold my hand during labor and I said no because I didnt want to hurt him.

phonics - 21.6 hours ago
Husbands get support while we are in labor? Wow. Never thought of that. I completely forgot about my DH while in labor other than getting pissed that he would not let me drink the water from the ice chips and that he was holding my leg while I pushed at first (the doc later put me in stirrups when he came. I was progressing so fast a midwife had to come in to deliver until my doc came mid push). I will try to be supportive to him this time around if he needs it.

AndaBabyMakesThree - 22.1 hours ago
Hey ladies, unfortunately I am not able to check this website while at work and just checked in. Thanks for all the comments about doulas and birth experiences. I think especially because you never know what kind of nurse you're going to get when you go in labor, it will be worth the money to get a doula to ENSURE that there is someone there by our side. My husband is sure he can deal with it, but I want him to feel supported too, and don't think I'll be able to provide him any support while I'm in labor. Right now I'm leaning towards a doula. I'm in West LA and it seems that everyone is very busy. I highly doubt that I'll get a nurse that is super attentative to me. Besides, the doula also acts as an advocate and communicator between us and the doctors/nurses. I love my husband dearly, but think that he is a little too nice and accomodating to other people and may be likely to give in if they suggest something other than what I want. Anyway, I just wanted everyone to know that I truly appreciate hearing your feedback. It means a lot to me to have a place to go for answers from women who are in the same situation as me. THANKS!

Hello Everyone! I will be having a boy and my hubby and I totally agree on his first name, Benjamin. We chose Benjamin for 2 reasons...one because I love the name and two because it was his late grandfather's name. However, we are disagreeing on his middle name. I really love the name Frank for two reasons...one because it's his other late grandfather's middle name and two because it's my late grandfather's first name. He likes the idea of Frank, but he thinks our boy will get made fun of...Benjamin Frank (kinda close to Benjamin Franklin). Do you really think he'll get made fun of for that??? I'm soooo torn.

Sooo... Since we were talking about weight gain and our bodies etc... I found the most delicious thing ever last week... Vanilla bean ice cream with hot cocoa mix on it. Last x-mas I got a gourmet cocoa mix, and for whatever reason decided to mix it with ice cream... YUMM!!!!! :)

mere-and-girl - 1 days ago
Laura: it was just all very irritating. As of my last doc appt I still haven't gained any weight, my shape is just changing. I feel that if someone is genuinely concerned about my weight, then it is something he/she should address with me privately, not in a room full of people that have all of their attention on us because we're just walking into the room. Chris has already given me permission to put him in his place if he says anything next time...

oliviasmom510 - 1 days ago
Man you guys have some crazy stories about your hospital adventures. With my first daughter I went in at 5 am to be induced and my nurse was as nice as could be. Then at 7 I asked for my epidural...big props to women who can do it all natural. Then at 8 my nurse came in because it didn't feel like the epidural was working and it was time to push. The doctor had just been there and checked me 15 mins before that and I was a 3. You heard right I went from a 3 to pushing in 15 mins. no wonder the epidural wasn't working. :) Anyways the nurse helped me breathe and stay calm without pushing until my doctor was there to deliver. He didn't even have time to get back to the parking lot when she called to tell him it was time. The staff was amazing. I am in a new state with a new hospital and a new doctor, but I know a few of the labor and delivery nurses and I will pray they are on duty when I go into labor. Hope this experience is just as amazing as the last.

mere-and-girl I was talking to my ol mans ma and was saying how big our son was and she had to comment on my weight as well..it irritates me ...as a woman she should know how sensitive we are when we are preg..she said ...im not surprised at his size...laura eats everything in the house...like im some fat pig who sits around eating all day and doing nothing else..i exsersize 5x a wk..do house work and eat a mostly veggitarian diet..at least i take care of myself...is what i was thinking ...people are dam irritating..like shut up with the fat comments and look in the dam mirror!!

O ya and this is kinda related but kinda not but when we went to florida over this past summer for a vaca, my now 20 month old caught a virus and was running a fever and stuff so we had to take him in since we were going to be there another week and wanted to catch it soon if it was bacterial. So I went in there and told her that he had been running a 103 temp taken rectally and that I had been giving him tylenol but it was not going down. So she rudely took me back and took his temp rectally and of course there it was 103. So when she was taking me back to the room she tried to tell me that taking a temp rectally usually adds about 1 degree or so and that since his temp was only 102 theorhetically that really I should not get worried until his temp gets up to about 104. WHAT!!! That lady shoudl be fired. A rectal temp is the most accurate cause you actually are taking and internal temperatue. how much more accurate can you get? THE NERVE! So anyway. I encourage anyone who has the desire and passion for treating people with respect and compassion to become a nurse so that we can weed out all the women who think they know everything and think that they can pass on their 'knowledge'! psh... whatever!

RemingtonsMommy - 1 days ago
3rd... I am too eventually going to get my nursing degree and work in labor and delivery just so that I can be that one supportive nonjudgmental nurse that everyone will love. My sister just had her baby about a month ago and I swear her first nurse was so judgemental about everything and tried to tell her not to give her baby a paci and made her feel bad for not wanting to breastfeed. I personally support bfing too, but seriously it was not her place! My sis is only 19 and she will have to learn on her own. I just hate that these nurses think they know sooooo much that they feel the need to tell you everything like you are some kind of idiot. So anyway. I want to be a labor and delivery nurse that everyone loves and remembers!!!

They had no choice, BUT to put me in a room when I went to the hospital. I remember my first two contractions were 7 minutes apart. The third 6, and then an hour later they were 2 minutes apart. She was coming and fast. So by the time we got home, packed the car, and went to the hospital they were 1 minute apart. They had to pick me up off the floor. I walked in the door in betweek contractions and was so tiured and in so much pain. He had to fill out hte paperwork and ask questions in between. I mean they were bearable, but just not fun.

3rdbabyat38 - 1 days ago
Titangoddess, i sure would have loved having you as my support person with 2nd baby. Hubby is wonderful but always so scared. I was in too much pain to even tell them to kiss it. I just seem to remember stupid comments such as 'Its always the girls that want to do it naturally that things go wrong?' and 'no more ice chips for you' when I was in transition. My labor was going so fast and I was so tired, contractions with no rest inbetween... I know that baby's heart rate was having a hard time rebounding so they were probably more vocal with me b/c of it. Your right though, when it came down to it I got in a position that was good for me and they had to work around me being on all fours on the bed because I wouldn't budge until doc was ready to deliver me. Ya know when I went to the hospital at 2:45 am the nurse sitting at the desk looked stupidly at me and asked what I was there for... I should have told her 'a hospital tour...' Seriously though, I told them I was in labor with contractions less than 5 min. apart and that my doc had stripped my membranes that morning. She said 'well sometimes when they strip your membranes you 'think' you are in labor.... AHHHHH!!! I dealt with a lot of stupidity last time. I won't deal with stupidity this time...

titangoddess - 1 days ago
LOL.. you guys are so funny. Sorry about the uncle Mere! Just tell him you would have eaten more but he got to it first. Make it a game... LOL... I was 19 when I gave birth to my first child. I was in labor for four days. I had a nurse slap me across the face for screaming in front of my mom and dh. My mom spent the next two days putting her hand over my mouth to stiffle the cries. I didnt scream again. A few years later the same lady came into where I worked as a paralegal and I 'lost' some of her paperwork... Karma! My second birth was awesome. I was not induced and it was unmedicated and fast. I did the leg work way before I went into labor. Studied so many different styles of birthing I could have given birth on my head by that time. I ended up giving birth the way my body wanted me to give birth. No one can tell you that you can't move, change positions, scream and yell, and they can't tell you how to birth. They do however have restrictions that vary at every hospital. You need to know what they are before you give birth at that hospital. They are not going to change their rules dependant on your birth plan. They can not give you med's without your permission, if they do it is a lawsuit. They can not make you lay on your back unless they need to do something like check on your progress. These are things you need to know prior to going into the birth process. If you can tell them this is what I want and I do not appreciate you telling me how I am going to birth they really can not make you do anything. They get nasty with you, ban them from your room. You have that right. Unless it is a life or death reason they cant do alot of things to you. Once you are there they have to help you give birth. They cant tell you they are not going to birth your child. If they tell you to cross your legs tell them exactly what body part to kiss. IN the end it is risk over want. You can birth anyway you want to birth even if you are in a horrible place to do it in. The more you know before birth the better your overall experience will be. I wish someone would have told me this with my first one. My first birth was so bad I tied my tubes so I never had to do it again.. LOL.. see where that got me huh? LOL... goodluck ladies!

mere, ooohhh girl. I would love to run into that uncle of your hubby's... I think you should say something funny to him like, 'well my baby's due in March when's yours finally gonna be born?' or you might say 'Heck no I'm no stranger to food, don't we run into eachother there all the time!!!' This way no one in dh's family will get an earfull of what you'd really like to say to this fat pervert!!! PEOPLE MAKE ME CRAZY right now...What an A**!!

mere-and-girl - 1 days ago
I also need to vent about people's comments, only mine are coming from people I have to be around... So chris' uncle is the true definition of a pervert. That's all the detail I'm going to go into, but let's just say he has a history. About a month ago all of chris' family got together at his mom's house to celebrate a few birthdays. After lunch we all had dessert, and I tried 3 of them (all very small pieces though). Chris' uncle had the audacity to tell me that I needed to watch what I shovelled in my mouth because they didn't want me to lose my figure. Uhh hello, I'm 16 weeks pregnant! I didn't say anything. So last night we had a thanksgiving dinner at the alzheimer home chris' gma is in, and his uncle was there. We walk in the door, and the first thing this a**hole says to me is, 'well, we can see you've been no stranger to food!'. It took every ounce of self control to not make a scene. I wanted to tell him that with his history that I didn't think he shoud be commenting on ANY female's figure, but that if he was going to start commenting on mine, that maybe he ought to make sure he's lost the extra 70 lbs of fat he's carrying around! I'm still furious thinking about it. I didn't ask him his opinion, didn't want it, and given his history, felt it was completely inappropriate!
