Born & Birth stories

By this week of pregnancy your baby's crown-to-rump length reaches about 13.5 inches and the total length is approximately 20.7 inches. Your baby weighs about 6 pounds now. The top of your uterus has moved further up under your ribs and is about 5.5 inches above your bellybutton. Your uterus has grown a lot in the past few weeks as your baby has gained weight. You may have gained about 30 pounds by now and it is common for your weight to stay about the same from this point onwards.

Almost full-grown baby at about 36 weeks pregnancy Because the top of the uterus is high as it will be, breathing may be getting very uncomfortable at times. You might notice jabbing pains from your baby's kicks. However, within the next few weeks, your baby will drop into the birth canal and this will make breathing easier again. Most doctors like to see their patients weekly from now on to check for labor progression. Your prenatal classes are probably coming to an end and you should have already made a birth plan and discussed available options for pain control during pregnancy.

Your baby's face has filled out significantly and looks smooth and plump. Because your baby has powerful sucking muscles and has had layers of fat forming for quite some time now, the cheeks have filled out like a newborn's. Your baby's skull is firm, but not hard. Every baby's head has the ability to give slightly so that there is room for her to fit down the birth canal during delivery. Some babies are born with cone shaped heads from the pressure of delivery, but this will go away after delivery. The amount of amniotic fluid is at its maximum amount now and your baby may not be moving as much as she had been. As long as you still feel her movements every day, there should be no cause for concern.

The placenta is now one-sixth of the fetal weight.

Happymommytobe-I'm in California but it sounds like the FMLA is the same. I was out 6 months but decieded to stay home fulltime but my job was still there. Technically because you haven't delivered you are on state disability so that doesn't count towards the 12 weeks...the 12 weeks is postpartum for bonding and caring for a newborn as I recall. Talk to benefits they can answer all your questions and enlighten you on state law regarding holding your job and so forth.

I just watched our local news/weather and they said this is the pattern for the weather 2 snow storms a week and very cold for the rest of feb. I m getting scared now I'll have this baby at home. we live over 30 mins away from the hospital plus dropping kids off at babysitters. (plus I can't drive so I'll have to wait on hubby to get home to take me)I'm a walking time bomb I have very quick labours and I'm already 5-6cm dilated and 100% effaced and baby head down and on the brim. On th plus side I could save money by having a home birth!!(I'll make sure I give birth on my couch !! Then hubby will have to get me a new one!)

36 weeks!!!! Only 28 days to go : )

happymommytobe! - 8.5 hours ago
lisset005- I work in Virginia. I did read in my packet that according to the FMLA act, they have to keep my job for 12 weeks, then they no longer legally have to keep my job for me. 12 weeks for me is feb 20th since i went out on bed rest at 26 weeks pregnant. But i won't return to work until may. So i do believe that they could fire me. I am hopeing that once I give them the exact date that i can return, they will be able to tell me what, if anything i'll come bacK as. i do plan to call benifits to see if they have any options for me. on another note, i suddenly am so ready to have this baby. I have gotten sick and it's no fun! haha ow is everyone else?

roosa - 8.6 hours ago
yummy-mommy, sorry you are feeling scared. Try to take a deep breath. Yes, your blood pressure is high but not alarmingly high. With my first I had high blood pressure the last 6 weeks, up to 150/90. It is not unusual for it to go up towards the end, but your doctor should keep a good eye on it to make sure it's not pre-eclampsia. I was checked 2-3 times weekly. All the best!

jolivas - 8.7 hours ago
36 week Dr appt 2morrow. i think I get the Group B strep test done as well. I hope he checks to see if anything is going on down there.

babydreamz - 9.4 hours ago
I just want some real contractions. These little ones are making me mad! I'll be full-term on Friday, & would love to see my babyboy then! .. When I went to the docs last Fri I was 1 cm & 80% effaced. What's going on with y'all?

jolivas - 9.5 hours ago
I will be Full term this Sunday and I am so excited. I want to start walking like crazy. I know if the baby is not ready to come I can walk my heart out and it wont matter but I really hope this baby will come sooner rather than later.

first day in week 36 4 weeks to go cant wait till this is all over i think ive had it lol

jekajoy - 10.7 hours ago
akid-that is hilarious! As for my appointment, bad news! He is now breach! Argh! So much for that vbac I was hoping for! Dang it.

lisset005 - 12.6 hours ago
Happymommytobe-what state do you live in? I used to be an assistant store manager for sbux before I had my first son...honestly your store manager and DM probably won't know the answers so I suggest you call sbux benefits and talk to the leave department about your concerns. The reality is they don't haveto keep your specific job at your specific store for you but they need to have a comparable job at a comparBle rate available for you when you return . The information should be in your leave packet they sent you.

missbecka21 - 12.7 hours ago
I have been having contractions for 3 days now 3-5 minutes apart and I am dilated 3 cm.... doctors dont want to do anything because I am 36 weeks... what a pain.. been trying everything I can to get the ball rolling, but working with contractions stinks!

akid - 14 hours ago
My husband told me if my water breaks while I'm sitting on our couch he'll buy me a new one!!!!(which we need a new one so bad!!!!) so with every contraction or pain I run to the couch and sit hoping and praying it happens there!!!! My luck it will happen right besides it and the I will be stuck with is ugly couch.

yummy-mommy - 14.5 hours ago
And I check my blood pressure again at zellers hours later at it was 158/80 so I don't think its just from me panicking cuz I don't think it would be that high like 9 hours later. And the nurse said I don't have preeeclampsia cuz I don't have any of the symptoms besides the blood pressure , I'm trying not to panic but I can't help it . I'm actully really scared

MamaLuvnJah - 14.5 hours ago
Since I got off BR I painted an Elmo painting for my son's room. He went bananas when he saw it. He loved it!

CONGRATS TO ALL WHO ARE OFF BED REST! WOOT WOOT!--------------------------CONGRATS MARCHBABIES! I'M SO HAPPY HE IS HOME.

yummy-mommy - 14.6 hours ago
Wow I just had a scary morning I went to do a nst today and babys heartrate was in the 170s and wouldn't go down and I was having panic attacks because of it and my blood pressure was 140/90 which is super high for me mines noramally 100/60 eventully babys heartrate slowed down to 150s after like a hour and a half but they didn't check my blood pressure again so I don't know if its still high or not . They said everything was fine and sent me home but now I'm really worried my blood pressure has never been that high in my life I'm kinda scared they said it was only high because of the panic attacks but I dunno and I've felt really weird the last couple days . Has anyone else experienced anything like this

rkkbaby - 15.1 hours ago
Today is clean the house and get everything finalized day. I have decided I am going to try hard to go into labor this weekend as I will be 37 weeks friday and then i dont have to go back to work. Hopefully I can sucessfully go into labor and just not overdue it and end up in extreme pain.

roosa - 15.8 hours ago
taylasmummy, that IS funny - I wonder what was in the air yesterday :) Except from yesterday I have less pains and aches and feel in better shape than I did a week ago due to bed rest. I am really enjoying it and feel like I can enjoy this last stretch - only 17 days to go for me.

marchbabies, so glad to hear Oakley is home with you!! I hope he will soon be off the oxygen but glad he is overall doing well. Enjoy your little man. xox

thetoymomma - 16.3 hours ago
jekajoy...if given the opportunity I would go for the VBAC. They will likely be monitoring you very closely for any complications and if any come about they can quickly change the plan to c-section. I heard a ton of stories about people having perfectly normal deliveries after c-section. I wonder if the Drs. try to talk women out of it to cover their butts just in case. There are always risks with vaginal birth. I've never had a c-sections though, so I'm totally speculating.

jekajoy - 17.6 hours ago
3 weeks until my scheduled csection...they said if I go into labor, if he is head down, and if my cervix cooperates, I can attempt a vbac. What would you do in my situation? I'm nervous about vbac but would love to give birth the 'regular' way lol. My appointment is later today, if I don't get snowed in!

marchbabies - 1 days ago
Oakley is home from the NICU! Thank you for all your prayers and support. He is on lights for jaundice and has to be on oxygen, but at least we are in the comfort of our home. Check out more pictures on my page of our cute little guy! Hope you are all hanging in there these last few weeks! ♥ ♥

preciousbandbaby3 - 1 days ago
Akid- I live in ohio & I havent heard of that, some doctors nurses are full of it. Im gonna research this, but no matter what u have the right to refuse that shot, just remember that. You are in charge even if they say things like u cant eat this is your choice they just like to tell you like its a law. I work at a hosp. & I know 1st hand the patient is in charge when it comes down to it. I will let you know about the 39 week thing. Im gonna be investigating

taylasmummy - 1 days ago
Thats so funny - I am exactly the same today. After 11 weeks of some form of bedrest I went a little crazy today getting things ready for the baby, as well as completely redoing my toddlers bedroom for no reason other than I was so excited to be back on my feet. I am paying for it now though - my poor back!!

roosa - 1 days ago
toymamma, I also exhausted myself today. I went shopping for something for baby this morning and then afterwards suddenly decided that now I am no longer on bed rest I wanted to make a special dinner for hubby. He has been so good at taking care of our son Kaleb and helping me in general, cooking, cleaning, drying my hair, the list goes on. Then I realized I don't even have a fondue and a white table cloth since we've moved from overseas so I had to go shopping for those, and then of course go grocery shopping and then of course cooking. We had fondue with chicken, beef, oven potatoes, garlic bread, dips and salad, and then a raspberry/cool whip dessert. Overall it's pretty simple but considering I haven't actually cooked in months I can now barely walk... But I just love my husband so much!!!! Thankfully dinner was a huge success and hubby really enjoyed it.

thetoymomma - 1 days ago
Okay I did way too much today. Cleaned the house (couldn't wait for hubby to do it anymore) and now my hips and back hurt so much I can barely walk. All the dusting got my allergies going (pregnant sneezing not a good idea) and my ankles and feet are totally swollen. I think I have a hard time accepting that I need to slow down. I just can't seem to sit still too long.

pugdunn - 1 days ago
Baby Aaron found his GPS and is now HEAD DOWN!!! YEAH!!! I'm measuring 37 weeks and 1-2 centimeters dilated ... a walking time bomb ... : ) I go back to the Doctor next week on the 16th so we will see if he is still head down. Now I'm up to 154 lb ... only 2 lb in two weeks not too bad I guess. My carseat and bag is ready in the car just in case he wants to come early. I can't wait to meet our new little bundle of joy : )

dmommy55 - 1 days ago
thanks for the advise i have an ultrasound in the morning and we r going from there

rkkbaby - 1 days ago
Had 36 week appointment today I am 2cm and 50% and head is low she said. She lifted walking restrictions and said she thinks I will be okay to go back to work! YAY, just what I wanted. I have a hard time walking through target much less walking for 13 hours. Whatever if I do go back I will probably go into labor the first night there and to look on the bright side I work at the hospital I am delivering at so I will already be there haha. Anyways I still have a note so I am off until the 15th maybe I will just wait til then and push hard to go into labor havent decided yet. Whatever happens I cannot wait until I have this child I have had bad back pain and am getting pretty miserable. Hope you all are feeling better then I have been but considering the circumstances I doubt it hahaha.

lowie - 2 days ago
This morning I was playing with my daughter and I discharged this white pasty looking stuff. then i got cramps like menstruation but it was more of a continuous achy pain not a contraction. It went away and now i feel fine. but whats with the discharge? I had a c-section with my daughter and missed out on the pre-labor so I don't know what to expect. thanks ladies for any advise.

Madelmar17 - 2 days ago
Ok, finally I'm in my last working week... I can't believe I made it. It's a challenge to wake up every morning to come to work after waking up every 2 hours during the night to pee or just relax my hurting hips. Next time I'll start my maternity leave in week 34... I was doing better then. I hope you all are feeling great and looking forward sharing our newborn pictures very soon!!

MamaLuvnJah - 2 days ago
dmommy- My last baby was breached. I got him to turn on my own by doing exercises. I did them everyday till he flipped. You can google on line exercises to make your baby flip when breached. I did three exercises everyday. It worked for me.

MamaLuvnJah - 2 days ago
My baby feels so big inside me. It's getting hard to move around myself. I keep telling hubby that I feel bad cause baby doesn't have much room in there to move around. He keeps reassuring me that babies are made for that and he's comfy and cozy in there. It's weird this time around cause my 1st child was born a late preemie. I'm not used to carrying an above normal size baby. This guy is 75 percentile in weight.

JesseeCee - 2 days ago
dmommy55- My baby is also breech and I was given the option to try and turn the baby as well, until I heard what is involved. This procedure is done in the OR and is extremely painful and I was told by my doctor that it only works 50% of the time.I am also worried that it could put stress on the baby. I figure that if it is going to be painful then why put myself through more pain. I would rather just have the c-section.

1sttimmer26 - 2 days ago
I had my baby shower yesterday. It was great to spend time with everyone. Today I started to lose my mucus plug. So I'm not sure I'll make it to my induction date on the 21st. I guess we'll see what happens. Hope you ladies are doing well.

dmommy55 - 2 days ago
found out that baby might be breech, doctor said they will try to turn baby, is it worth it?

FINALLY- 36 weeks pregnant today. I can't sleep either, the toymomma. It was 4:45 AM for me... I was up every few hours. I just wrote a new blog (sort of complaining one) and uploaded five new photos.

thetoymomma - 2 days ago
Wide awake at 4:30am for the third night in a row. And so it begins.

klderoos - 2 days ago
Akid- its not until you feel like your normal self that you realise how bad you were feeling! my midwife suggests that if you are not back to your normal mental self by 8 weeks after birth then you need to speak with someone but she also says you should ask to be referred at anytime during your pregnancy, our feelings are very real and you should address them as such. I had a very hardtime adjusting to being a new mum and it took me a good 8 months to come into my own after my daughters birth, I was never diagnosed but realise now I should have sought help of some kind, I will most definatly do it this time round if I need to. All the best.

My son would not sleep on his back he has always been a belly sleeper. I told the Dr they said it was ok some babies only sleep on there belly but they had to tell me about Sids.

MamaLuvnJah - 2 days ago
akid- I'm sorry you are feeling like you might have PPD. I've felt like my hormones get the best of me to some days. I have to keep reminding myself it's not really me and it's the hormones and that keeps me calm. I tell myself this too will pass. Even a good cry helps. I had to try really hard to focus on the positives of pregnancy to get through the days when I was on bed rest. Now that I'm off BR it's been easier on me and my hubby. Only you know whats really going on in your head. It's your decision not your doctors. It's ok if you need an extra medical boost to get through it. Remember that you have God to help you through too. He'll always be there for you. Prayers

i had my baby shower yesterday! it was beautiful. i feel so fufilled and ready. the crib mattress should be delivered early next week.. then i will have absolutly everything.. =) yep babies should always be put to sleep on their backs.. and congrats on the babies ladies!! there is an end in sight! hah

momannie - 2 days ago
happy.. you should do whatever you think will keep your mind at ease =) if you show your work that you would be willing to stay on even as a barista they may see how dedicated you are to your work and hold your position for ya.. just a thought. but you do whatever will keep you the happiest that is ALL that matters!

MamaLuvnJah - 2 days ago
Hi guys! How's everyone? I'm doing great. Feeling good and doing more around the house. I only get pelvis pains at night. BH seems to be slowing during the day. Some nights I get practice labor, but not as painful as real labor. Crazy! that my body wants to practice when I've been through it before. Time seems to be moving slowly now! He he! I can't wait to hold my baby. Life is gonna be so beautiful. I hope everyone is doing good.

MamaLuvnJah - 2 days ago
happymommy- I would talk to a lawyer. There are laws protecting pregnant women.-----------andbabymakes6- according to the Academy of Pediatrics to avoid SIDS lay the baby to sleep on it's back until the baby is able to roll over on it's own.------------------------CONGRATS!! mom2ucc!! That's such good news.

happymommytobe! - 2 days ago
I need some advice :/ I'm a shift supervisor at starbucks, and had to stop working at 26 weeks due to preterm labor. I'm currently getting disablity. My worry is that, i'm still taking 12 weeks off when my daughter is born, but my boss had said that my district manager is unsure if i will still have my position when i come back, since i'll be out of work for about 6 months. I can't blame them for that, honestly i just want a to know that i have a job to go back to, even if it's just as a barista and not my manager position. Should i go to my boss and ask what i should expect? if I will at least have a job to come back to or if I wont? so I can start to prepare about finding a new job after my MAT leave. i'm freaking out a little. I hate not knowing! ugh

thetoymomma - 3 days ago
akid...that is a really cute idea. I'll bet they'll love. Post some pics if they do it :)

I'm thinking of letting the kids paint my belly today for something to do(we are snowed in) Does anyone have any other ideas that a 2 and 4 year old would have fun doing with my belly??(wanted some fun pictures of my belly and the girls before I give birth)

ckingland - 3 days ago
Akid- as far as the PPD, I haven't had it as this my first, but my cousin had it with both of her girls.. it was after she had them though and she just slept constantly, had no desire to get out of bed, or do anything which obviously isn't that unusual, but it got to the point where with her first she couldn't cope with anything anymore, she had such an easy baby girl never cried, was fussy, anything, but the least little cry would set her off where she just couldn't handle it and we were all running over to help all the time- one day she had a major meltdown and while hubby was at work tried to take her DD to the police station to give her up :/ someone finally told her she needed to go get seen, got on medications and she was MUCH better- obviously this was an extreme case but at least the next time they were aware it might be a problem and she got put on meds right away.. but that being said PPD is actually fairly common but most women aren't treated because they just think their insane and should be fine but they're not- so talk with your doctor about it especially if you think you're at risk!
