You are considered full-term now and your baby's final touches are being made. The crown-to-rump length of your baby is now 14 inches and the total length is around 21 inches. Your baby weighs approximately 6.5 pounds. Your uterus may be measuring about the same as it has been and is probably about 6.5 inches from the top of your bellybutton.
This week your baby should engage into your pelvis. If this is not your first pregnancy, it may happen later. When your baby engages, his head drops down into your pelvis and you might feel a slight sensation called `lightening` as the pressure on your ribs eases. As your baby drops into the final position for delivery, you may experience a buzzing feeling and shooting pains in your groin and leg. Normally, you will be able to breathe and eat easier. However, your uterus pushes down harder on your bladder and you will have an increased urge to urinate more frequently. Even if your baby engages now, you still possibly feel his feet in your breastbone around week 40.
Your baby is now fully mature and ready to be born. However, your baby is still growing and developing every day. Fat is still being laid down at a rate of a half ounce a day. If this is your first pregnancy, you can expect to deliver closer to 40 weeks or shortly thereafter. If this is not your first baby, you might go earlier than 40 weeks! Make sure that your bags are packed for the hospital and remember to preregister for admission.
Your doctor may begin doing weekly pelvic exams to evaluate your cervical changes and progression. Your healthcare provider will make sure that you are not leaking amniotic fluid and will also examine your cervix to check for effacement and dilation. Before labor, your cervix is thick and 0% effaced. During labor your cervix thins out and right before delivery it will become very soft and 100% effaced.
Research shows your baby can be affected by stress hormones. Make time to relax, to have fun, and to rest.
Your baby has learned to coordinate sucking, swallowing and breathing so it can do all three when breastfeeding after birth. Babies practice shallow breathing before birth, using amniotic fluid.
Almost there! Did you know that we also have a month by month calendar for babies? You can find it in the menu under `Babies`: Month by month

I had a few contractions this morning that were strong but nothing too bad. I thought I'd rest a bit after church and when I got up I had a huge rush of blood (about 1:30). Called my midwife and contractions were about every 2-3 minutes for the 45 minutes it took her to get to my house. She was worried about placenta abruptio but after assessment we decided it would be safe to continue with home birth. We broke water at 5 and our little girl was born at 5:38 pm after 4 pushes. All went well and quickly. Still no name.

Well ladies I went to my regular docs appointment this morning and he recons I won't make my next appointment on Monday. Babies head is engaged down super low and I could go anytime. Bit exciting but bit sad as my husband can't get home for 6 more days so there is a high chance he won't make the birth :( I can still call on my sister for support but it won't be the same. Let's hope I can make it past Friday! Xxx

ok totaly nesting today too. Finished sorting baby clothes and doing nursery, put carseat in the truck after washing the whole thing. Picked up everything in living room, dining room and even my dd room. Bf did dishes and cleaned the basement. The only thing left to do is pack my back for the hospital. Does anyone remember what your supposed to pack though? lol Went out for Valentines day dinner tonight too and rented a movie so dd in bed and now bf and I are going to watch a movie and cuddle while eating the piece of cheesecake we got from the restaurant:) YAY
vickywoodhall(teamblue!) - 8.4 hours ago
Well my nesting has taken a new turn as I cleaned out (my bfs) the car today, even my boyfriend was impressed and he is very faddy when it comes to his things :-) so least this nesting is serving a purpose lol

Amber- same. my poor fiance keeps coming home to me cleaning lately and keeps telling me it does not need to be spotless... but I want my house clean. I took a toothbrush to the shower the other day because it was getting little grimies in the crevices and they were driving me nuts... and my hospital bag is funny. I have just enough packed for me and my fiance, but I have like 10 outfits for the baby... I don't know what I will want him to wear when, but I will have choices... hehe. Vicky- yeah, I have given up on the contractions. I have been having them on and off since 35 weeks. The last week I am beginning to swear my son is pure evil. I will start having contractions in the early afternoon (during which time I am usually in class, oh joy), and they will get more consistant and stronger throughout the evening. My fiance noticed last night and was timing them and they were like 6-7 minutes apart. I finally manage to fall asleep, and come morning they are gone. Every day. My son is evil. This morning we were on our way back from the grocery store (normally we go on saturdays, but neither of us had any energy yesterday, my honey has been sick for over a week and I am just dead from baby), and on the way home I was joking 'out of me, you!' and he bucked his head down right in my cervix. I almost started crying it hurt so bad. Mean, evil baby. Grr.

firstpregg- I've never used the rasberry leaf tea. I was considering using evening primrose oil to help the labor process along (sooner) but I'm nervous. I've never done anything but bd with hubby to help soften the cervix etc. and wondering if it has any harmful effects? I've been loosing lots of mucus plug, still all clear no pink/red. Today I am cleaning everything from top to bottom. The house honestly didn't need a deep clean as we've only lived here a month and the house was brand new BUT I have dusted/pledged/vacuumed/cleaned bathrooms and toilets etc. All of my hospital bags are packed even Hannah's stuff and a snack bag for hubby lol. Just the daily things we use need to be added when it's time and that's all written down on a notebook that's on top of the hospital bags. I don't want her to come just yet but would love this next weekend!!! we will see
firstpreggo - 12.2 hours ago
hey anyone here trying rasberry leaf tea to try and tone my cervix (I really hear this works for steadier easier contractions, NOT to induce labour), anyways I really hope it helps some as my first one was 27 and a half hours with contractions 5 minutes apart from start to finish.
vickywoodhall(teamblue!) - 18.6 hours ago
Lol ruby- this pregnancy hasnt been so bad (yet) but my last I kept leaking everywhere I definately needed breast pads by now, after not sleeping very much all week I got 11 hours sleep last night phew I was going insane :-) all contractions have stopped now my bf keeps suggesting things to get labour going but im not sure I can be bothered with the hours of contractions for it to all stop and be for nothing because my body isnt ready

my nieces name is kaedynce (her spelling of the name). I love the name. However, if you are uncomfortable with the similarity, try something like using sophia for the middle name and have her go by her middle name. The two flow very well together and sound pretty. On a side note... I was on the phone with my sister this evening helping her with her homework (she just started college, I am so proud), and suddenly felt this wetness on my stomach. Was like- hey, I am waiting for my water to break, but that shouldn't be on my stomach... figured it was just my imagination, and wiped where I felt it, and sure enough it was all wet. Looked up at the ceiling to see if somehow our ceiling had sprung a leak (not likely, ours house is fairly new and it has not been raining today that I know of)... nothing. So I looked down at my hand... yup, my boob leaked all over me. I am used to the leaking in the shower, but this was a new one... I guess its time to break out the nursing pads... my boobs are not my own anymore :(

Jenn-i dont think there too similar at all. Both names are beautiful. So whatever you pick will be perfect!
jenn teampink - 1 days ago
This lil girls name has been Sophia from the start, my dh wanted that name for our last but I won the name war so he got to name this one. 4 days b4 her scheduled birth, he tells me he wants to change the name to kadence. I really like the name but our oldest is kaitlyn. I think kaitlyn and kadence are too close, he said her nickname would be Kay, so I would prob spell it Kaydence. Opinions, kaitlyn and kaydence too close?

Well contractions seemed to have tapered off once again, so now I'm just so done. I'm not even mentioning anything to anyone till I'm in full blown labour now. Heading to Medicine Hat to do some shopping today and eat at 'Edo Japan', I've been craving it for weeks now. Talk to u all later:)
vickywoodhall(teamblue!) - 2 days ago
Today has flown by! Me and my bf have been out shopping and bought the last two bits for the baby and then we went for some lunch came back did a few chores and now im sat down with a cuppa phew! It certainly makes a change to sitting at home waiting for baby to come :-)

Firstpreggo-I also heard that the fluid regenerates fast..Are there other hospitals in your area ?? I have three very close to me . Call there L&D sometimes they can give you info and somethings it depends on who answers the phone ...I have called all three hospitals in my area in one day before..

when I lay down on my back sometimes I can put both my hands on the side of the babies head right in the middle of my belly ,over my pelvis bones...but when i rest on my side he like moves his head more to my hip..The dr. said he was still high but Im starting to worry he might just do a flip to the breech...
rubyg1315 - 2 days ago
Hey first preggo- I would ask my doctor if she would be willing to prescribe antibiotics if she intends to allow you to continue, if for not other reason then because it will relieve your fear of developing an infection. Stress is not good on the baby, so your constantly being worried is not a good situation, whether your water has broken or is you have a leak. Also, on an up-thought... do not be so nervous about your baby being in there without any fluids. Your body regenerates your entire supply of amniotic fluid every 3 hours (pretty amazing, all things considered). Anyways, just keep your fluid intake up so that your body has the liquids it needs and it will see to your baby having its usual swimming environment. However, I would still play it up at your next doctors appointment and tell them how this leaking has continued regularly, as a leak that persists for more than a couple days is more of a concern as it then does not appear to be re-sealing itself and so there is an elevated risk of infection.

Jenn teampink - i have had 3 friends have breech babies flip after 37 weeks by going to an acupuncturist, ive never been to one myself but 3 to 3 odds are pretty good to me! just an idea if you really want the baby flipped or if you are just fine with a csection. good luck!!!!
brie(boy) - 2 days ago
Well I got locked out of this site again! Hopefully this profile will stick around long enough so I can end my pregnancy with you ladies. It has been so frustrating to say the least. I hope you all are doing well and hanging in there. I have had a lot of pelvic pressure and my skin feels like it is going to rip across my belly. I have no idea if I am dilated yet since my doc won't check me. I am scheduled for a c section on the 23 so I guess he doesn't check you in fear it could send you into labor early. Oh well I guess time will only tell.
Krystina(BLUE) - 2 days ago
Firstpreggo- if I was you I would have just gone in and said im not leaving. lol. I know probably overdramatic but I would be too concerned to let it go... My day was slow, I went to a breastfeeding class and it was so boring, my poor bf was the only guy there lmao.
firstpreggo - 2 days ago
still here everyone, contractions have slowed again, and yes not sure why there are letting me go so long with amniotic fluid leaking, maybe there just retarded here. Sorry, just so frusterated now and just want this baby to make up its mind to come or not already!!!

Congratulations bonny! Yay! I had contractions all yesterday afternoon and night up until about 1am when I made myself go to sleep. Woke up this morning and whole body is aching so bad! My lower back is KILLING me! Cummon baby if u want to come out do bad just do it! :)

Was so sure baby flipped but no, still breech, csec on wed the 15th, I go for another US on tues to see is she's still breech, Dr said she could flip but won't, basically she's seen it happen but very unlikely. Baby was 7pd 9 oz. My BP was elevated, I'm thinking because I got it taken after they told me baby was breech so my nerves were worked but I had to take blood work and I have to do 24 hr urine to test for preeclampsia. I'm sure it was my nerves but I was also sure she flipped so what do I know? 5 more days, yikes!!

jenn teampink - 3 days ago
Firstpreggo - be patient, I can tell u from experience, much better to be home for as much of the initial labor as possible. I had to be induced my first and hated being stuck there, the second I went into labor on my own and was at the hosp about 2 hrs b4 she popped out, was so nice to be able to walk around my house, watch my tv, do what I wanted while I waited for the active part.

Heading to my appointment at 1pm.. I'm a little anxious to see what's going to happen because I have been having a lot of contractions and since I'm scheduled for a section I wonder I'd they will do it early or anything. I wouldn't mind if we waited, I've got a lot I want to get done in the next 11 days!! I just really don't want to have uncomfortable contractions the entire time- so annoying!! It's been a tough couple days here.. We found out my husband has to have another knee surgery soon and the job he has been working to get is a no go now because of all the knee issues. Stinks!! I've been just laying low a d doing nothing at all since these contractions started so my house is a disaster and I'm feeling kind of crazy!! Oh well!! Wishing you ladies the best- i move to 38 tomorrow, and unless they decide to take the baby today ill see you guys there!!

firstpreggo-I would definitely try to get some clarification on why they don't think you need to be in the hospital. And you're right about the posterior cervix, mine was still posterior the morning I went into labor with my daughter. Labor was very long because so much still needed to happen, but she was born the next night. Seems weird they are just ignoring it, but like mommyrn said, maybe it's just a small tear/leak? I know sometimes those can go back together on their own...
vickywoodhall(teamblue!) - 3 days ago
Good luck girls its a race between first preggo and feb :-) im over to 38 weeks today! feeling cranky due to not much sleep :-( it seems every night about 3am im awake tut
MommyRNPink - 3 days ago
first Preggo Your doctor is ok with you going soo long after your water broke?? They gave me potocin with my son to speed things up cause we didnt know exactly when my waters broke and didnt want to risk infection. Do they think its just a leak?? Being an RN and a mom i would recommend clarifing with your Dr. and telling him your not confortable with the risk of infections (if thats how you feel) When my son was born i had a fever and chills and his white blood cells were elevated. they then had to give me antibotics and we had to stay anextra day.
mummyteegs(blue) - 3 days ago
Feb- well done! Sounds like u will b the next to give birth! Once you get to 4cm they call that labour do yay! I had 2 membrane sweeps and second one did the trick :) go for a walk and I recon u will have your baby in the next 12-24 hours :)
FebruaryMommy(blue!) - 3 days ago
had a pretty good doctors appointment today, I did have a little change since last week, now I am about 3cm still 50% effaced but she said she can feel the babys head very easily now. she also stripped my membranes which she said sometimes helps bring on labor and we also discussed induction more. we decided to schedule an induction for the 21st which is a few days before my due date but she said she doesn't think I will make it to then since I seem to be progressing on my own. So at the very latest my new due date is the 21st (: but I still hope he makes it out on his own before that. I have a question, I have been having some really strong but irregular contractions since she stripped my membranes but I was wondering if anyone has had any expierience with going into labor after having been stripped and how long it took after being stripped?
firstpreggo - 3 days ago
hey everyone so went to hospital and having contractions 15 minutes apart but very mild, and they checked but I'm only 1cm dilated and so the nurse told me to go home again cuz it could take a few days to up to a week sometimes in this state, cuz my cervix is still posterior. Which is BULLSHIT cuz your cervix can be posteror up until your pushing, so that means nothing. So now have to wait to see what happens. So please wish me a short labour, hopefully in full blown by tomorrow morning at the latest.
mummyteegs(blue) - 3 days ago
Firstpreggo- my friend gave birth last week but her waters had completely burst 48hours before she had her son, I thought that was a long time. And my best friend has had 3 children early (one at 8 weeks early, one at 6 weeks early and one at 4 weeks early) and with one of them she went 10 days with her waters breaking before the docs decided baby had to come out incase of infection. Spins me out they could stay in that long without water.
jenn teampink - 3 days ago
Firstpreggo - that's exactly what happened with me with my first, I gushed, because they say u have increase in discharge, that's what I thought it was, happened few more times over next few days and I finally wasn't comfortable with it, said this is not right, no contractions, not even BH with her and nurse scolded me as soon as I walked in l&d. She is 5 1/2 now and no issues but there is that increase chance if infection so I am in disbelief they would just ignore it, I was induced right away when I went to the hosp. They usually want baby out within 24 hrs of water breaking. Did u call your Dr and speak with them?
vickywoodhall(teamblue!) - 3 days ago
First preggo- when my waters broke last time I didnt have any contractions or anything so after a bit I rang my hospital labour ward they told me that I shouldnt rush but to make my way in soon I think you should call them, well ladies I finally gave in And after not having sex for about 6 months I let my bf talk me into it today lol since then I have been having contractions/bhs on and off so I can definately see how this would work in inducing labour when your ready I doubt im ready as il be 38 weeks tomorrow and my babies dont usually come till late....but ya never no :-)
Krystina(BLUE) - 3 days ago
So everythings good not dialated or effaced but my doc said that if my gbs test comes back negative she will strip my membranes next week which is pretty nice to know. Hopefully by then something will be going on.
amber242 - 4 days ago
first pregg- i've never had that happen but I would go to l&d and tell them what is going on!
firstpreggo - 4 days ago
So yesterday started leaking amniotic fluid, had a small gush of it enough were my underwear was soaked. Waited till my doctors appointment at 4pm and they test my underwear and it came back positive for amniotic fluid, I'm not having contractions though so they didn't even get a doctor to check me or anything they just sent me home and said if it continues to leak to come back at 7am. So I never felt it again and still am not having contractions. But my mom's an RN and I'm in school to be a LPN and I KNOW that you are supposed to be doing something about this is your amniotic fluid leaks, after 24 hours if nothings happening, cuz the risk of infection is so great. Has anybody else had this happen to them?
Krystina(BLUE) - 4 days ago
