Your `fetus`, about 5 weeks old

You are now in your second month of pregnancy and your developing baby is 3 weeks! You might just be finding out that you are pregnant and may have many concerns and questions. Some women still do not realize that they are pregnant yet. You might have already had a positive pregnancy test. Many tests can show a positive test result 10 days after conception, but it is recommended that you wait until you have actually missed your period. The baby has not grown very much from last week and is now approximately 1.25 mm long. You will not `show` yet for some time.

At this point in your pregnancy, you may begin to experience some symptoms. One early symptom of pregnancy is nausea. Some women will actually vomit and others will not. The nausea and/or vomiting that occur during pregnancy are called morning sickness. Most of the time morning sickness is worse in the morning, but not always. Morning sickness does usually improve or disappear by the end of the first trimester. Another early sign of pregnancy is the increased need to urinate. Frequent urination can continue throughout the remainder of the pregnancy because of the growing uterus and increased amount of fluids you are drinking. Many women also notice breast changes early in pregnancy. It is common to feel a tingling or sore sensation in the breasts or nipples. You might notice that the area around the nipple, the areola, becomes darker during pregnancy. It is also not uncommon to feel tired or fatigued at this point. You might feel like you need to nap at lunchtime and you may need to go to bed earlier to accommodate your body's needs.

As early as this week, the plate that will become the heart has developed. Your baby's brain, spinal cord, muscles, and bone formation are also beginning to form. The baby's skeleton is forming at this time as well. The embryo has a distinct organization that has a top, bottom, left, right, front and back. It is important that you continue or begin to take your prenatal vitamins to prevent birth defects.

On your initial doctors visit you may be checked on Hematocrit, hemoglobin, white blood cell count, blood group type, Rh factor, antibodies to blood group antigens, VDRL, rubella anti-Body titer, hepatitis B, toxoplasmosis, urine culture, and HIV.

Sometimes as early as the second month of pregnancy, the insides of your hands and the bottoms of your feet may itch and take on a reddish hue. This annoying condition is called palmar erythema. The increased color is nothing more than a curiosity of pregnancy.

Thank you Jamie. I am trying not to think about it too much. Waiting to see what my doc will say tomorrow :( Elequin - with my boy I had mild cramps throughout the first 8-10 wks and was exausted all day. No morning sickness, no insomnia and no other symptom whatsoever except for the sore breasts throughout the whole pregnancy. For me this pregnancy was the first one out of 5 when I experienced insomnia and was kind of surprised it was a common pregnancy symptom :) Hoping all of you ladies are doing great!

jamie86 - 1.3 hours ago
elequin- With my son I was sooo tired all the time, and had really sore boobs. Then around 6 weeks is when the nausea started but I didn't get sick a whole lot just mainly felt like I was hung over. I'm thinking the baby I'm expecting now is a boy as well since I'm so tired but not having a lot of sickness yet.

elequin - 2 hours ago
Went and saw the doc this morning, he calculated that I am five weeks and five days, and am booked in for an ultrasound in a week - should be able to see a heartbeat by then!!! Getting excited :) It's such a strange feeling. I had one good night's sleep and am back to my insomnia again... but I have manic amounts of energy during the day, so have been exercising, and haven't been stuffing myself with food... yet :) dramatically different to my symptoms last time... feeling more and more like my bean is a little boy :)for those of of you that have had boys already, what symptoms did you have early on in your pregnancies?

jamie86 - 5.5 hours ago
Leeah- so sorry, try to get some hope though. I've heard of some not having their numbers double and all turned out ok.

Leeah - 9 hours ago
Not a good day for me. Just came back from having my HCG checked and it did not double in 3 days. It is 554 from 348 ( 3 days ago) I know it does not always means m/c but having had 3 already I cannot help but thinking for the worse. My doc will call me tomorrow to discuss the results and probably she will order more testing. My hopes are very low at this point :( will keep u posted.

Lovelymummy - 10.7 hours ago

It's only 6am here in California and I can't sleep ... Woke up once around 2am as well. Guess a nap will have to do later. Hope all of you beautiful mommies have a great day. Sticky dust to everyone :)

elequin - 15.7 hours ago
at first i thought i have been hit by the hormone train, but after half an hour of reflection i have decided that, no, i am legitimately and wholehearted angry, and it's not a mood swing. I'm not one to write huge long vents, especially on my phone at midnight, but i will say this much. My husband has been a totally selfish, unsympathetic asshole tonight. Grrrrr. That is all :(

Leeah - 17.4 hours ago
Thanks chelles. Same to u. Btw your hcg level is whitin the normal limits so no reason to worry :) Elequin - I am still waiting to have that full night sleep. Been up every night for the last 2 wks for at least 2 hrs :) Well, with that at least I got that quiet mommy time that I always wanted since my son was born 3 yrs ago LoL Sticky dust to all!

Lovelymummy - 19.3 hours ago

Leeah - 22.8 hours ago
Hi everyone! I love this website and I was here 3 years ago with my 1st pregnancy and found support thru 2 m/c and one ectopic since. Now am pregnant again and praying this will be a complete and healthy pregnancy. So far everything is good HCG at 4wks 5 days was 348 and u/s showed a sac and possible a yolk although she was not very sure. Will go tomorrow for another test and next Fri for another U/S. So glad to be here and join u thru this new and wonderful experience :)

Frances88 - 2 days ago
I am so glad this site has finally let me register since with all of these problems with the site my last account was deleted. I was stuck on this site with the pregnancy of my daughter in 2010. Now I'm so happy to be back with my second pregnancy!! I barely found out last weekend that I am expecting my second bundle of joy. Ive been having nausea and seem to wake up a lot at night. Completely opposite from my daughter's pregnancy where I had no morning sickness and slept all of the time. Cant wait for my first appointment on the 24th. Well I'm definitely looking forward to this wonderful journey with you ladies.

jamie86 - 2 days ago
Bcalove- Yay! I'm going to wait a bit before I update my profile any to make sure its fixed for good. Lovelymummy- I have trouble waking up in the morning and stay tired all day long but when its time to go to bed I toss and turn for hours before I finally fall asleep.

tanyagower - 2 days ago

~annalyn~ - 2 days ago
Lovelymummy- I am exactly the same! so tired, but when i wake early cant get back to sleep. but now im struggling to keep my eyes open! Congratulations to all!

Lovelymummy - 2 days ago
I feel extremely tied, but wake up at 5am , toss&turn and can't get back to sleep, does anyone else have this problem?????? It's hard work especially with 2 active boys :-(

bcalove82 - 2 days ago
OMG! It's fixed! Yay! I'm still here!

jeckalecca - 2 days ago
I'm scared jamie! If I don't say anything for another two days it's because I'm booted yet again....okay....here it goes....

jamie86 - 2 days ago
For the others, I was posting as Milobayand1ontheway because of the glitch not letting me log back into this account.

jamie86 - 2 days ago
Jecka- Try your old profile again. It finally let me log back into it. Everything is gone but my blogs but thats ok I guess.

jeckalecca - 2 days ago
OMG I got booted again! I invited a friend and it booted me! I was BCALOVE82 and Jeckalove when I got booted the first time. OMG! I guess I am in week six but I am still reading this week because I missed it!

MiloBayand1ontheway - 2 days ago
Chelles- With my daughter at almost 5 weeks I was in the 500's and with my son at almost 6 weeks it was so high the hospital said they thought I was 10 weeks. With this one I have no clue what my numbers are. I'm assuming not very high since there aren't many symptoms yet.

Aunt2Be - 2 days ago
Chelles - I like that....sticky baby Well SIL's appointment went okay. Midwife was prepared to tell her she had an 85% chance of MC due to having 2 ablation procedures. Luckily one was with a Co2 laser and that reduces the risk. She'll be having an ultrasound on Tuesday. Praying for a STICKY BABY!!

chelles - 2 days ago
•3 wks LMP: 5 - 50 mIU/ml •4 wks LMP: 5 - 426 mIU/ml •5 wks LMP: 18 - 7,340 mIU/ml •6 wks LMP: 1,080-56,500 mIU/ml According to this I am in Range im confused!

chelles - 2 days ago

Still Happy - 2 days ago
Oh ok. I've been seeing that alot lately. I'm hoping for 36 weeks flat. That's what I did with my daughter, and headed to the hospital for some pitosin. Or however you spell it.

chelles - 2 days ago
@Still Happy it means i hope for my lil bean to stay for the entire 9 months :)

Still Happy - 2 days ago
Chelles- what's a sticky baby?

chelles - 2 days ago

Lovelymummy - 2 days ago
Ours is payed in a different way, we pay it through our wages / pay , and the amount you pay depends on how much you earn, could be £50 a month or double? But if u don't work, it's free, don't know why? But does seem like u guys get very well treated

Still Happy - 2 days ago
I would say the US is spoiled on health care...except we PAY AN ARM AND A LEG FOR IT!!!!

Still Happy - 2 days ago
You're right! On that note, I dont think I'll make any requests. I might wind up scaring the crap outta myself for nothing.

Lovelymummy - 2 days ago
Hi, it's so nice to hear how your health care is being looked after, here in the UK everything is so different. I get to see a midwife at 8 weeks for blood tests, then have to wait until 12 weeks before we get 1st U/S, not seen again till 20 weeks for another U/S to check progress and sex if u wish. Don't get to hear the Heart beat till 24 weeks. Sometimes it feels like things are too far apart still all exciting though

MiloBayand1ontheway - 2 days ago
Yeah can't hurt to try. I will add though that at almost 7 weeks with my daughter all we saw was the yolk and gestaional sac so it is still possible to see anything just yet too.

Still Happy - 2 days ago
Ok, I'll definitely try. It would be so sweet to have a set of twins. I was just watching youtube videos about twins before I came back to the site to check for your suggestions! LOL Well, my appt is on valentines day, so here's hopin!

Aunt2Be - 2 days ago
My SIL is currently at the doctor now, can't wait for the doc to confirm. She has had such a hard time she deserves this.

MiloBayand1ontheway - 2 days ago
Lol, not sure. I've heard of saying you think there is more then one in there has worked before or that you want to make sure all is ok. I'm seeing a new person for this pregnancy so I'm hoping she will do an u/s or schedule me for one soon. I do have a family history of twins so maybe that will help get me one.

renem37 - 2 days ago
Hello girls. Starting week 5 today and looking forward to my blood and ultrasound on Monday with the Dr to make sure everything is good so far. Good luck to everyone!!

Still Happy - 2 days ago
Sweet! I'm gonna ask my doc if he'll do an ultrasound. What excuse can I give him for wanting one?

MiloBayand1ontheway - 2 days ago
Still Happy- With a doppler usually around 10 weeks but with an ultrasound you can hear it sooner. I've heard it as early as 5w6d with an ultrasoung.

Still Happy - 2 days ago
Hey! When do we get to hear the heartbeat? I totally forgot

Still Happy - 2 days ago
Milo- That sucks! I have no problem going to sleep. It's the staying awake. I almost fell asleep in a meeting a couple of hours ago! LOL I've never really had morning sickness with my babies before. And like you, at this point I don't really have any symptoms.

MiloBayand1ontheway - 2 days ago
Haha! I have been having trouble going to sleep at night but I stay tired all day long. So far my only symptoms are fatigue and extreme hunger and heartburn. I'm usually having morning sickness at this point too but it hasn't really started yet.

Still Happy - 3 days ago
THE SLEEP WARP ZONE HAS BEGUN! I hate this part. It feels like you can never get enough sleep. I literally sat up this morning and tried to get started and my eyes were closed...I didnt even know it, until my husband stuck his head outta the bathroom and said, 'Mia, you gettin up?' I was totally gone.
