14-7-2009 - A mom still breastfeeding a 5 & 7 yr old? SHOCKEDMy mood while writing this blog:
SHOCKED

Ok so I'm sitting here watching Dr. Phil and this lady is getting advice from him on how to stop breastfeeding her 5 & 7 yr old daughters. What are your thoughts? I personally feel that if it was medically necessary I could see mom breastfeeding for so long, but she didnt one time mention that was the case, so I am having a hard time trying to figure out why would she still breastfeed. I would love to hear other moms thoughts on this thanks

i've heard of cases like this and i understand it's a personal choice, but i imagine the kids might get teased if they're that old and still breastfeeding... i mean they're in school and having friends over by then, right?! there's a skit on "little britain" (sketch comedy show) in which a 30-something man brings his fiance home to meet his parents and horrifies her by breastfeeding... i can't help but think of that right now, although that's obviously unrealistic and done only for comedic affect!

Wow. That's extreme. I pray that the kids have no problems because of it.

*pdpb, they actually showed her breastfeeding the 5 & 7 yr old and Dr. Phil said that he felt that the issue was with the mom not being able to "let go and let the kids grow up" he also said that its against the law in certain states to breasfeed that long.

Hi. I personally can't see breastfeeding for that long and wonder if their are psychological side effects once they're that old. I really don't know...I would love to know what Dr. Phil said. Interesting show I'm sure.

Personally, I cant see myself breastfeeding any of my kids for that long. I've heard of mothers doing so for up to 5 years but never above that. I'm not really sure how I feel about exactly when you should stop breastfeeding a child because after 5, kids are in school and going through other developmental issues. I've always thought two years was max because of that. Maybe she pumped the milk and the child wasn't literally hanging off her at 5 and 7. Interesting subject.

My dr also nursed her twin girls until they were 5 years old. It's a personal choice to breastfeed and for how long. I am breastfeeding and my daughter is 9 months old now. She is weaning herself already by cutting out a morning and an afternoon feed. I will go as long as she wants me to. xox

ok well..first ..happyforest..they still eat normal food..and drink normal drink like any other kids there age.. they just keep on getting the soothing, calming and nutrional milk from there mom as a +

so YA i did breastfeed my oldest son for 4 years and was breastfeeding my daughther at the same time as well (for 2 years) i never stoped them they stoped when they were ready!

in my case it realy did help because my son was lactose intolerant ... (it whent away eventualy, i believe because of the breastfeeding) but even if it was not the case , i respect when the child is ready to stop.. my yougest son refused the breast after 2 months!(weird!)

Breastfeeding is a beautiful thing and a wonderful bonding experience between mother and child! I believe as a parent it is your choice how long and what your comfortable with. But at age 5 and 7 all I have to say is eww! I think that is child abuse! I know some doctors and I can agree with them is do it as long as you want as long as the kid is not asking for the boob and the car keys in the same sentence! I would say that is the next question out of their mouth!

i think its wrong....and i am very pro-breastfeeding. but there is no reason to keep going that long, children need to learn about normal food and how to feed themselves. these kids are school age children!! they need to be eating lunch and things, not wishing they were home on the tit. its not the childrens fault, its the mothers. she is being selfish, the children no longer need to be breastfed, they will do just fine. it is HER that will not be it seems like she just cant let go. she needs some counseling, it is NOT ok for a child that old to be sucking on a tit im sorry!!!
