28-11-2008 - Robbie's Birth Story Proud! My mood while writing this blog:
Proud!

On Wednesday November 19th, I went for my weekly NST test. The nurse had noticed that I was having contractions every 1-3 minutes. I told her they were not very strong and that I had thought them to be nothing more than BH. She checked me and said that the cervix was not changing at all and that I lived pretty close, should things change, to come right back. I was told before (or read somewhere) that if you were close to labour, having your cervix checked can throw you right into labour. Well it did! After having the greatest sleep of my whole pregnancy, I started receiving contractions at about 4am. They were strong but were about 10-20 minutes apart. I got up with my husband while he headed to work. Told him to keep the cell close because these contractions felt more like the real deal. I was very determined to make sure this wasn't false labour, so I got the kids their breakfast, and planned on walking them to the bus stop for school--normal routine. Well by 6am, I knew I was in labour. The contractions were a steady 10 minutes apart. Called my hubby and he said I was stubborn as hell and he felt it was time for me to go to the hospital. Called my Mom and my Dad...told them this was it. Husband came home from work. By this time it was 7:30am and the contractions were every 5-10 minutes apart and were strong enough to stop me in my tracks to do some heavy breathing. My husband took the girls to the bus stop around 8:20--by this time I was feeling really uncomfortable. 8:45am we were off to the hospital, and my contractions were regular every 5 minutes. My hubby went to get all of my paperwork from admitting and I went up to L&D. I was checked and was in full labour!! I was ready but wish I still had the extra week. See, I was to have a planned caesarean today, Friday November 28th. After that everything went into warp speed~ After sitting in OB triage for about an hour, I was taken to my labour suite. The nurses told me that my Dr. was on his way and going to do the section at about noon. They asked me if I was in pain and I told them ofcourse. The nurses told me that I was already going to have a spinal with the surgery--but wondered if I wanted demerol to take the edge off. I asked them about side effects and they said it could cause the baby to have respiratory distress after. FORGET IT! The epidural they said with the spinal would cause me to be in more pain in recovery and the remaining days I had during my hospital stay. FORGET IT AGAIN! So girls, I went natural from 4am right up until the time of my section. My mom picked up my daughters from school and they made it to the hospital by 11am. They were there with me holding my hand, rubbing my legs and comforting me during my contractions. My husband, God bless him, did everything possible to try and reassure me that everything was alright and coached me through all of my breathing. 12pm sharp they had me get up and walk down to the OR. I got into the room, hopped up on the table and looked at all the surgical tools and got nervous. I was alone because my hubby was getting gowned. So I freaked on the inside, but didn't show it--but I was nervous. I couldn't believe that 7 years later I was here again and that my SON was about to arrive. The spinal tap Dr. came in, had me hunch over and hug a pillow tightly. He stuck the local (while having a major contraction) in and I jumped a bit--that hurt! My feet immediately started going numb. They laid me down flat, strapped up my arms--it was go time! My hubby came in and started petting my hair immediately...he couldn't believe how brave and calm I was. I could feel them working in me, all the pressure and tugging--but no pain at all. At 12:43pm we welcomed Robert Andreas James into the world weighing 9lbs 1oz and 20 1/2 inches long!! That's a big baby! The umbilical cord was HUGE!! The nurse said she never see it so tight and healthy before! For being only 5'1--that is a big baby LOL To think he was a week early too! He would have been a 10 pounder--yikes! Recovery was easy breezy! They said it was because I laboured naturally before the surgery. I was up and walking 4 hours later! I've also had a really easy time breastfeeding which has helped shrink my stomach back down fairly quickly :-) I do supplement at night with formula because he doesn't get enough even after draining both boobs!! My hospital stay was beautiful, nice private room, great nurses. Glad to be home with our l'il man though! All of this was definitely worth it. I'm greatful for being able to bring another life into this world. My tubes were tied during the section. So this is my final chapter for pregnancies~ God bless all of you and your new miracles!!
