My mood while writing this blog: ... |
My dad is not Christian, but he married a woman who is Catholic. When I was small, he would go to church with us. Although he isn't Christian, he strongly believes that people are better off believing in something greater than oneself. So, he encouraged my mom bringing us to church, even though he didn't participate in Mass, really. He is actually Buddhist.
One of the things he would do after Mass is explain to me his version of the day's readings and homily. I always enjoyed his takes on them. It was nice to get a different perspective.
One of his little lectures was that of the story of the loaves and fishes. If you're not familiar with this story, I'll recap a little. Jesus and his disciples were out and about, trying to teach people about God, and it was lunchtime. The disciples told Jesus that everyone was hungry, and they needed to eat. All they had to give the people were a few loaves of bread and some fish. For all of those of people, it wasn't going to be enough! The "miracle" of the loaves and fishes was that Jesus said, "Go ahead and distribute the loaves and fishes. It will be enough." And lo and behold, they passed around the baskets of food, and when the baskets came back, there were leftovers!!
The common conception of this is that Jesus somehow multiplied the loaves and fishes to feed the masses.
My dad's take on this was, "People brought their own food and shared. And that was the miracle."
I happen to believe my dad is right. Jesus knew the power of people's kind hearts and generosity. When times are tough, and people have to tighten their belts, I find there are heroes amongst us all. People who will give, when you most need help.
I was so worried early on in this pregnancy. My family is so far away. And I know they don't understand our situation. Our money problems have been concerning me for some time now, and all I keep getting from my relatives is how "rich you are" and "you need to [spend more money on us]" kind of crap. I get it from my old friends too. People I knew from high school and earlier.
But last month, here where we live, my co-workers threw me a baby shower. And it really touched me. I can't explain how much it meant to know people cared enough about me, my husband, and my pending little one to share their "loaves and fishes" with me.
I had been so worried about the clothes and diapers, and a place to put the baby, if I have to bring him to work. And all of that was relieved in one fell swoop, by the "miracle" of the loaves and fishes.
